Halo 1-3 in my opinion is the greatest stretch of games we've ever seen. So ahead of there time, comparing them to modern games today they still are so much better. You can tell the devs really put their heart and soles into whereas devs and game studios now just focus on maximizing profits:(((

I would argue Halo 3 had a lot of competition around its release, cod4 and gears of war, and still managed to become an ultimate experience, only thing that I think they missed on is graphics and story

I haven’t bought a new game since Sniper Elite 5, and the only one I’ve recently bought before that was RDR2. The game industry is too hyper-focused on graphics now, and the games suffer for it. Take Sniper Elite 5. The graphics aren’t the greatest, but the gameplay is fun and takes skill. Can that be said about CoD Vanguard? No. Sure, the graphics look beautiful, but does that matter if the gameplay sucks? No. Even when the game objectively looks better (Like Fo4 or BO3 zombies) it looses it’s charm that made it fun to experience. In my opinion, SE5 is the last good AAA title to come out in the past 2 years.

Yeah I've easily put 1000 hours into Battlefront II, but I've maybe put 60 hours into the newer Battlefront 2. Yeah after DICE was able to make the game it was kinda fun to play. But it was so limited. In Battlefront I could take a ship, fly it around a map, land on a sand crawler or a AT-AT, or a big rock. Get out of the ship shoot at people, get back into my ship and fly around some more

My fondest memory of CE was when rescuing Captain Keyes. I had a glitch where if you fight the jackals outside and then trigger the cut scene, they continue to attack during the cut scene! So while Keyes is talking, plasma is flying everywhere, marines are getting hit. And then Keyes himself gets hit...and dies....and then comes back to life! Funniest shit I ever saw. Good times, Bungie. 😂

I found a similar glitch during the first time entering the control room, if you time it right and fly the banshee up high with enough speed in the direction of the door opening, chief will be teleported out of the banshee for the cutscene, and the banshee will fall and kill him leaving a disemodied voice for the cutscene.

Halo CE is my childhood gem. As someone who's born in 2002 and only started playing 6-7 years after the release for the first at my dad's house every weekend was a very fun time. As a kid playing it on easy all the way to Assault on the Control room when I completed it and mission 343 Guilty Spark was next with it's dark and foggy atmosphere and level design it had me scared as a kid, I only completed it and the other missions later when I grow up more and then completed halo ce's campaign for the first time. I remember back then always chilling and messing around with sleeping grunts and Perchance to Dream starts playing in the background after you gone down the first lift. I still have my original copy of CE backwards compatible on the Xbox 360 and I even play it sometimes. Halo CE is my most played halo game to this day campaign wise, now it day's I'm playing it on legendary with skulls on MCC to make it even more chaotic, challenging and fun to fight against the A.i. I also adore the grunts from ce even mimicking there voice lines when I fight against them and the rest of the covenant, and even helping the grunts fight against the flood on occasions no matter if they are my enemies.

The Bungie ViDocs remind me of a 5 year old that is super excited about a drawing or painting they made... Going into immense detail on why they made it the way they did.. Proud as hell about it..
Regardless if Halo ended up being good or not, their passion and pride for this project was unmistakable.
I'd love to ask MartyOdonnell about certain musical arrangement choices..From Jason Jones and Joe Staten I'd love to hear what deliberate changes were made to make the story beats more digestible as a video game vs movie. From the concept artists I'd love to hear about how they came up with Hunter Designs and anatomy. OR WHAT THE HELL WORT WORT WORT MEANS. Stuff like that...
and you know they all could probably talk and nerd out about it all for houuuurrs...The passion they all had for these releases is evident in every moment. From title screen to credits.
Those ViDocs didn't feel like marketing at all.
Just a bunch of proud parents that love to talk about their kid haha

I think that part about the composer saying the Flood shouldn't come at you immediately after the cut scene is amazing. It's people that are part of it, but not fully in the trenches seeing something, they say what they think would be better, and the leads listen and pay attention. The leads aren't so sold on their own ideas that they ignore other potentially better ideas. That level would have been worse if the Flood attacked immediately. That delay layers on the suspense and gives the story the space it needs to breathe. The game is better for that, and it is emblematic of why it is so good.

Halo 1 - 3 will always be some of my favorite games of all time. I remember being 11 years old, just moved to a new town and a kid my age down the street asked if I wanted to come play his new xbox(first one with halo as his first game). We started playing the campaign on co-op, and all I remember was having the most fun I ever had playing a game. Over pokemon on gameboy, and over all my N64 games like smash bros, Mario kart, golden eye, zelda. We ended up playing all day and night. This went from my first time hanging out with him to sparking a lifelong friendship. Those games bring back some of the best memories, like huge slayer parties, drilling holes through the walls without my parents knowing so we could run system link cables to xboxs in different rooms just to prevent the screen looking haha. The young kids prob wont know nothing about that lol, but man those were some good times.

My only hope is to see a developer put this much love into a game again. Thanks for making my day looking back on fond memories.

Despite getting a whole array of games throughout the years, Halo is one game that my brother and I started to play regularly, together. I'm pretty sure if we didn't do that, that we wouldn't be playing the games we did today, or be close the way we are.
Since 2008, we play the Halo 1 campaign around every Thanksgiving/Christmas. We used the old Xbox up to the Anniversary remaster, then used the 360 till the Master Chief Collection on PC. Sometimes we throw in 2 to wrap it up, but we always feel that 1 had the most impact to us.
This last holidays was the first time we didn't play it, because our entire family got COVID. We all recovered thankfully, and he tells me we'll pick a weekend and play it; but you feel something is sad and amiss that your Halo holiday bash didn't happen. Like a family tradition you quit, and you feel the absence of. I get that we're older now and have gone different paths, but it's one of the few things that I do feel that's remained from growing up.
On top of that, original Halo got me into movies like Starship Troopers, and gave me the experience that sci-fi can be something else than Star Wars and Star Trek. I met some cool people who I dub "Xbox bros", and it was the first game I got for a used Xbox I bought with a measly paycheck while working at Food City. Something about the Halo universe always felt real, practical and that it could happen very well today without any issue. I met artists who were big fans of the Elites, and those people were the ones to shape me that the Elites could've been good allies after Halo 2.
It was very influential on my life. I was never really good at multiplayer, and I never had an Xbox Live subscription. But I remember all of that. It'll always have a mark on me forever.

Something I feel like that always brimgs me back to late nights playing Halo with my friends is the music, the beautiful chorus of voices, the drums, the strings, Reach probably has my favorite songs outside of ODST but ODST is cheating, its got smooth Jazz which always hits, but music in Reach felt so important, mainly that part where the Zealots suddenly drop in and take a marine and all you get told is "5, 6, clear the hole" and you and Jorge get to it, that song that plays, that intense almost synth like guitar as you chase after a dangerous foe.
I remember 0 moments where the music emphasized the impact of a moment in Halo 4 and 5, the only moment I remember in 5 is when everyone fights Chief and his helmet gets cracked, which I only remember because its a little odd, Chief is, if I remember correctly, one of the like 2 Spartans considered Hyper Lethal, Noble 6 being the other, so Cheif should just be laying this entire team out, they're newer Spartans also so that doesn't help them

Still remember the first time I played halo. I was probably about 6 or 7. I went to go stay with my older sister who was only 17 or 18 at the time and had an apartment with her boyfriend (now my brother in law) who was a 6’2 Slipknot metal freak who didn’t let no one mess with his shit.
I typically would just watch a movie when I went over. Well he told me I could play his Xbox one day but he only had one game. I remember just being so mesmerized and invested in the game and scared when the flood came out and I was at night playing alone. Anytime I went over there he always let me play…. So much that Christmas that year he gave me his Xbox and halo and I just remember crying like a baby being so happy to receive a console and halo. I had never been gifted something personal like that. All these years later I’m 26 going on 27 I will never forget that day. Still have the Xbox and the only game for it. Halo. I’ve played 1-3 so many times. Never cared for 4 or 5 just played once to follow the campaign…. And just barely this past month started playing infinite and I am actually having a lot of fun playing the campaign like I used to. Wished there was more dialogue but I’d say I’m liking it better than 4 & 5. Anywho I’m fortunate to have been able to grown up the series in its golden years. Made a lot of friends who are no longer online. Good times

Good f'ing video dude. So spot on with the ViDocs and Bungie's philosophy on game design. No one cares if your game has a million new and "different" bells and whistles if they all have no character, aren't fun to use/interact with and play around. That one Halo 3 ViDoc where (i forget who) Bungie said "the core of Halo is weapons grenades and melee. When you really think about it that's what is fun about Halo's style of FPS gameplay. Unlike 90% of other popular FPS today Halo has a really fun melee component to it, grenades have different and fun uses (plasma grenades sticking to targets and getting multiple kills), and almost every weapon in the old Halo game sandboxes felt unique and served their own use and realistic playstyle within the sandbox. 343 has added fun weapons but honestly none of them have led to really funny and silly gameplay experiences like the grav hammer or spartan laser or plasma pistol.

Anyone remember ONI on PS2? if memory serves that was a Bungie game and the first I'd played from the studio bringing them to my attention. Halo CE changed the game for me, especially back before Xbox live blew up and you could use a PC to trick the OG Xbox into Online LAN multiplayer in a game with no online, good times. Reach to ODST are not just great games but some of the best Sci fi of all time. Halo should have ended with Bungie, its just not on par under 343.
    Thank you for the video.

I was super late to the whole Halo thing. Like 2019 or so late. My dad raised us PC gamers and even if we had an Xbox, there's no way my mom would have ever allowing us to play.
But playing the games I always heard of as a side note but never really experienced...I can see why they were so loved. I had so much fun playing 1 through Reach, I listen to the soundtrack quite a bit because it gets me pumped, and even hoping to get into the books.
I know "bashing modern games" can get old, but it is so common because what passion the devs have is killed by corporate oversight. Early gaming was so special because there was room for what was fun. It was genuine. Perhaps it is a fool's hope, but I want to see all the tech we have now used to achieve ambitious dreams like those of early game developers.

Just the same as you, I find myself always returning to Halo CE to relive some of the most fun I've had in my entire gaming history. Just saying that this game is 21 years old, and still holds that special place as a game that you can return to and have fun in is a testament to how well the game design was for CE.
I never thought about that before, but that 30 seconds of fun really makes a lot of sense, and really makes me think back on why some games I've tried to play just don't give that good feel like Halo did. It's because it lacks that 30 seconds of fun aspect.
And with how well the OST is for it I know I've listened to the whole thing probably a hundred times or more, it's really one of my favorite things to listen to. Outside of the obvious Halo theme, it's a hard battle between A Walk in the Woods, Under Cover of Night, On a Pale Horse, and Perchance to Dream. They are all so damn good it's hard to pick my favorites.

Halo CE was a paradigm shift in first person shooters compared to earlier DOS and Windows shooters like Doom, Rise of the Triad and others. The physics of driving the Warthog and the tank and throwing grenades didn't exist in the early FPS games. The first time I drove the Warthog in Halo CE or got my first successful plasma grenade stick, I remember thinking how cool it was. It was a brand new experience just moving around, punching enemies and throwing grenades and shooting. Still to this day I play Halo CE and it has aged very well. My favorite weapon in Halo CE is the Needler and the first time I picked it up and tried it out, I was hooked. I enjoyed the early FPS games but Halo CE was a completely new experience.

I'll never forget 7/7/2007. Halo 3 online challenge. For 24 hours Bungie employees would rotate and play a certain matchmaking mode, if you matched up against them and your team won. Everyone on the team would get recon armor. I got recon armor right before it became not rare anymore. I got to experience a few kids freaking out about my armor 1 time. I'll never forget that day or the incredible amount of fun trying to glitch the campaign with friends was or messing around in the crazy forge.
343 had ruined halo. However, what Bungie did with it, it would be hard for any company to follow up.

Hey dude, that's a nice video. Such a neat covering of all the things that made Halo one of the best series ever.
I'd also add that Bungie's old school lore about humans being Forerunners was also much better than the new 343 lore (I know Halo 3 had a murky direction with that, but the mainline story
was still very much according to the formula that was built up in Halo CE and Halo 2.

But when Halo 4 came around, I couldn't agree more that the prometheans just are not as fun to fight as elites for example. In Halo CE, the elites would actually catch me by surprise. They would evade, side step, and even duck when I went in for a melee. Bungie knew what they were doing when making worthy adversaries for the player.

I tried so hard to actually own the game as I had so much fun that I was nonstop pestering my parents. It got so bad that when ebgames was a new thing that we drove two hours to one thinking we could trade any three games in to get a copy of halo 2, I actually legit cried when the guy told me the games were too old to trade in. My parents still didn't get it for me after that. I even tried to save up, just back then getting 20$ to me was like a kid getting 100$ now. I don't even actually remember getting it. All I remember is spending HOURS replaying the game. I even some how managed to get xbox live as it was gonna be a "family" thing LOL. No one got to play online. I was always on custom games back when zombies in halo 2, you had to switch teams mid game to green and only use sword, or you got the boot. Lolol the glitches were fun too.

People seem to either forget, or never knew how much Marty contributed to the games' 'Sound Design' beyond just being the Songwriter. That had to have been very exhausting back then compared to the ease of use with the software and hardware available in our current times. He and others worked really hard at making sure that not only the music was dynamic in relation to the on-screen action, but also the way that proximity sound (and voice chatter) worked, coupled with blending the actual recordings of live fired weapons being tweaked and balanced so that a sniper shot that was far away, and even perhaps around a curve of a large map like Sidewinder, actually sounded very close to what the true sound would've been. It helped players dial in on where certain shots or grenades were leaving audibly traceable conflagrations so that players could truly benefit using a good sound setup alongside the visual input being received. To me, especially back then, that attention to such detail was paramount for winning battles. Amazing, cutting edge -BLAM!- at the time.

Halo was a turning point in fps games, where it really felt immersive, like a sandbox experience. Playing with the physics, launching overshielded players off of warthogs, it all lended to that experience. Not only that, but the ai behavior and setting/plot of story were quite compelling. It's not perfect though. The enemies are silly at times, some of the guns are a bit underwhelming, but the game play loop is spot on, and it really was fun to play with friends or alone. It's a great memory for me.
