i just pre-ordered this phone, was comparing this with the S23+ and Google Pro. but decided to go for this, simply because it runs on Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, which i feel is just a more superior chip than tensor 2. and it looks better than Samsung.
Great review..it is an improvement from the previous xperia 1 IV especially on 4k recording and point and shoot camera performance..i still don't get why people still finds a reason to hate Sony devices..😅😅 they say its expensive but so is Samsung, even iPhone is expensive 😅..
It seems that why there are people still hates Sony phones, is because of the overheating warning that oftenly appears at previous series. I guess that's why.
@@af.noir_ Well, that issue versus the overall performance and design, i don't think it's fair to just look at the issue to say a device isn't enough unless they're shooting 4k video 24/7..😅😅..
@@af.noir_ Fun fact, the overheating during 4k recording is because it has a higher bitrate than its competitors. Not all 4k videos are created equal. A one minute 4k 60fps is 152054kbps, which is around 920MB/s, while the iPhone 14 Pro is 54895kbps (393MB/s), and the S22 Ultra at 62106kbps (451MB/s). The V solved the heating issue, at least in recording, by introducing better heat dissipation while other manufacturers just cheat and lower the bitrate to keep the phone cool. Kudos to that. Another reason why the overheating warning keeps popping up is because Sony is following Japanese legislative standards, which means their phone cannot go higher than 50 Celsius. The throttling is thus more aggressive than phones that do not follow the Japanese safety standard.
maybe because Sony offers crappy software support? See how much Apple and Samsung support their smartphones over the years and compare to what Sony does with devices that cost almost 2000$.
@@liv0003 software support is overrated. Even if you buy a 5 year old android flagship still works as a flagship and everybody must have forgotten the bugs after software update especially on Apple devices (face unlock not working after update). You don't always need the major upgrades if there's nothing wrong with current one. What I'm saying is, reviewers should consider the strengths of the device not just the price. They usually talk about prices like Samsung and Apple are cheap.😅
@@kiliandjfilms yea they were literally losing money on this division for a while. Only lately they started making profit, most manufacturers would just can their phone division if they were in Sony's place.
Your reviews are great, I'm getting my second Xperia 1 (first was a mk. 3) and it's largely because you guys cut through the cost considerations (which are valid) and just evaluated the thing - giving it a recommendation. I mostly like Xperia because of the expandable storage, earphone jack, classy and understated design, the possibility of upskilling myself in the use of Sony cameras, and finally the super wide screen gives lots of real estate for retro games like those on ppsspp, which are generally better than genshin etc anyway... The new grip and chassis detailing, as well as the addition of night mode photography and a top end processor that apparently makes overheating a thing of the past sealed it.
So is it overheating too? That has been my gripe since I had the Z2 and then XZ, and then I heard about the exact same issues about like every single flagship Xperia that came after. So I wonder, I'd love to get an Xperia phone again, but I refuse to face the exact same issues as 8 years ago :D and the 2 years of OS updates don't make it any easier to go Sony, since Samsung now offers 7.
Thank you for the review! this sounds like my dream phone and has everything I want: SD Card slot, headphone jack, UFS 4.0, stock android, im just worried about the software support, and how it stands against the pixel phone camera
Pixel's phone camera will give you unrealistic results. Like 99% of smartphone manufacturers, they don't care about producing realistic images, they over-process their photos and come with the usual AI, upscaling, smoothing etc artifacts you'd expect. They're arguably the best at it though, right next to Samsung. They have the dreaded "phone quality", but they are very cheap for what they do give you. Xperias are the only phones in the market that don't have the "phone quality", speaking as a user of 4 months. Sony doesn't over-process, they're porting professionally developed software from the alpha cameras and they don't rely on AI to show you what it thinks you want to see. Pretty much everything on them is telling you to take control instead of rely on auto modes and stuff and they're tuned for this kind of use, but even their auto mode is crazy good at this point with the most accurate white balance and color science I've ever seen on a smartphone. Also Pixels have awful magenta casts in low light and 90% of your pictures will consist of orange and deep blue color science with all other colors apart from red being laughably washed out and desaturated, including skin tones.
Why the hurry to make a review of the phone? It's still running on pre-production software and is bound to have issues since the software was modified, and also the introduction of a new camera sensor, which is why you probably saw some of the problems not found on the other lenses. The results from the stability test aren't conclusive as there should still be some work in progress to optimise the SD8G2 chip before release. I'll really like to see a proper review with the official release software for this device.
Before I talk about the phone, lemme mention one small thing: for about a year now, you don't add the RAM options to the chipset in the performance/hardware section of your videos. I think you should bring that back, or you can mention it along with the storage/ROM options. Now to the phone, the 1 V has meaningful upgrades indeed. And great work guys!!!
Sony seems to be one of the only companies, other than Asus, who seem to care what the consumers want. Not everyone was ready to ditch the headphone jack when most others did. Pretty much just Asus and Sony kept it. But Sony giving us expandable storage cements it as the true friend of the consumer. Internal storage is how other phone companies raise prices. Storage is cheap, and they know it, so they gatekeep it at a premium. Bravo to Sony for letting the consumer decide how much they want to spend on storage.
Sony had a terrible 2022 with dumpster-diving sales. I don't think consumers want an SD reader or Jack. Otherwise, it would have been best-selling. There was another OEM with both, LG, and so few people bought their phones that they closed their smartphone business. There is no proof that consumers cannot live without these two features; quite the contrary.
@@andyH_England I think you're confusing commercial success with what people want. Sony lagged behind in a lot of areas, chiefly computational photography, which is why other android brands beat them consistently. Literally nothing will make an iPhone user switch. And yes, consumers may not all want a headphone jack, but they do want more storage choices, and nobody wants a notch or pinhole.
If headphone jack and sd were important for most prospective buyers then they would still be on the best selling phones, or the best selling phones wouldn't be the best selling phones. The large majority of people don't care about these features
@@gregorsamsa1364 I hear what you're saying about maybe the headphone jack. But the big manufacturers claimed it was a space issue, which is a lie. What about expandable storage? You're equating 'best selling' with 'the most popular features.' Samsung and Apple care about ONE thing, making money.
Long as Sony Xperia keep on providing SD card slot, 3.5mm headphone jack and 4K screen I'm happy. Currently using xz premium and this is my 3rd Xperia phone since switching from Samsung in 2012 and I have not regretted it once
Sony is always behind not just against Apple and Samsung, other brands too like Oppo, OnePlus, Xiaomi etc etc All mainstream brands are way ahead of Sony in photography, design, price, eco-system and consumer base. Photography: Sony provides majority of smartphone brands their camera sensors and they outperform Sony in image quality such as Apple, Apple is popular amongst tech reviewers to create content for image quality and video quality but it uses Sony sensors. Why is Sony so behind with its own camera sensor technology? Design: Sony is like Apple when it comes to design. Flat screen, camera bump in the same place, not being creative. If you look at Oppo, OnePlus or Xiaomi their camera layout design just look sexy. Price: my Sony Xperia XZ Premium cost me £649 RRP at launch. It's got 19MP camera at the back and 13MP front camera, SD card slot, 3.5mm headphone jack, 4K HDR screen. Now Sony charges DOUBLE PRICE just like last year at £1299 for Sony Xperia 1 V for SD card slot, 3.5mm headphone jack, 4K HDR screen, 3 cameras, 5G and OLED screen technology. Is paying £1299 for a smartphone that has 2 extra camera sensors, 5G and OLED screen acceptable? No it's not acceptable, I would pay £1299 if the phone was made out of ceramic or leather which are premium materials to warrant the premium price tag of £1299 but as the phone is made of glass the price should be around the £999 price point in my opinion. Eco-system: again Sony is far behind other brands when it comes to ecosystems. The most a Sony consumer can do is pair Sony branded Bluetooth earphones or headphones to Sony branded smartphones. There is no Sony tablets, Sony smart watches or Sony laptops that you can connect to, unlike Samsung and Apple. Why doesn't Sony create these fundamental product's?
It's crazy to think that this is screen more pixels wide than some budget phones are tall. It's crazy. This is 1644 pixels wide and some budget phones are 1600 or even 1560 pixels tall.
I was on the fence about upgrading from my LG v60 to the 1 IV but the heat issues seemed like they'd be annoying so I didn't do it. Everything else looked great though. Glad I waited for a new chipset, I'm going to pull the trigger on this one. Can't wait to play around with the camera too. I think I'll keep the LG around as a dedicated audio device for the car, as it does anything audio related very well (3.5mm has a great DAC with 32bit output). I'm curious how the audio output compares between the LG and the 1 V.
@@ManuelLopez-mp9ro I tried an iPhone XR for about 5 months. The phone itself was fine, great even. But the lack of basic things like expandable storage and a 3.5mm headphone jack really was inconvenient for me. Besides that, some of the technical apps I've been using for years simply do not exist in the Apple store. Also, why can't I plug my phone into my computer to backup my photos? It's things like that, things that are pretty much universally present on almost any other phone since decades ago made it really hard for me to not think about switching back. The only perk was people telling me "you have blue squares", which honestly doesn't get me hard so... here we are. Can't wait play with the Sony.
One thing underrepresented IMO is the fingerprint sensor. None of this under screen bollocks. Even my S23 Ultra is finicky as hell. To think there's worse than this out there... Sony are doing it right with it on the power button AND an option to make it only active when you press the button. That's just better full stop. I prefer natural photos. Had enough of shooting at night and it looking like bloody broad daylight.
Sony always been the best out there. I had the very first one and the very latest one's. Always outlasted all Apple and Samsung devices. Sony for many years came up with lots of word first technological inventions that other makers just copied afterwards. Sony it's just underrated because most people don't bother using the menu options and they are happy with the rest of the devices doing the job for them. Apple using Sony cameras for over a decade, and Samsung it's just a fake image creating device for a lot of money. If you want to go for quality Sony is the best
Well can you blame people for not having the will or time to tweak dozens of menu settings? a high school kid might have that kinda time, but most people are typically busy in this age of hustle and would prefer a phone that is intuitive and just works.
Also as for 'fake image' : bruh, people prefer those images. True to life images appear dull and unappealing to most, which is why photo editing used to be such a thing. You gotta understand the market you're catering to.
@@eishuno I have never met someone who prefers "fake" looking images. The entire reason why people hated samsung at my school is due to the horrible processing. Albeit, iPhone also has some pretty wacky processing on the latest lineup. Sony is still the best for images you want to keep.
This is the only phone I would choose besides Samsung S-Series. I currently have the S22 Ultra and really like it, but if I don't go for the S24 Ultra next year, I would consider the Xperia 1 mark 6 if it's nice
Those phones with gimpal stabilizer lenses, I wish they should intergrate them to night mode shot, like pick one spot and no matter how unstable you are, it will keep the camera stable and focus on that subject. I like the Sony's aproach for stock android, instead overlay them like MIUI or OxygenOS.
My next new phone. I'm not buying any "premium" flagship phone that doesn't have a headphone jack and microSD card support. And yes, they're both still relevant in 2023 and never gone outdated or dead. If there's one thing I do want to see Sony stepping up, it's the OS update policy. While I'm still happy with two major OS update, bumping up to three years would be a welcome move.
@@EbNorth Aye. Sometimes seems odd which region gets which devices & when - some never get released in some markets at all. Sony phones are relatively difficult to get hold of in some parts of Europe.
Instead of being forced to buy the version of the phone with more built in storage at a premium price.. Sony still offers the micro-SD card slot, absolute legends!💯 Not to mention the headphone jack!!✨ I currently have the 1-II & it's still a great phone so there's no need to upgrade, but seeing this makes me happy there is also one brands still offering some of the classic features that other flagships don't!
While other phone brands are cutting down physical features on the phone like headphone jack and expandable memory, forces the consumer to use wireless headphones. Sony here standing strong, offering full features on a phone, with a back cover that does not shatter, while also making best wireless headphones on the market, and that truly says something.
No notch or punch hole with a 3.5mm jack. Crazy that people fell for a notch/jack with a phone without a 3.5mm jack. Still loving my 1ii but I may upgrade to this.
Thank you for covering the overheating issue of the phone. Overheating and durability are WHY i stopped buying Sony phone's. I've owned 3 of their top models and all had that. Beautiful pictures though.
Sony simply tries to "do the right thing" instead of chasing latest trends. I use Xperia phones for 15+ years and don't plan to change to another brand.
@@anilgrg44 I mean last time I checked Iphones are damn thick (the thickest phones out there) and wide like any other phone out there. Only Xperias are this slim on both axes.
The biggest and maybe the only problem with this phone is the PWM flicker at around 400hz. I don't know why the reviewer doesn't mention it. It's hard to comprehend how such an advanced company such as Sony can't implement DC dimming into their phones or at least make some 'lite' models with IPS screens without the f***** flickering. AMOLED is a disaster.
If Sony has a phone case that covers the camera bump, I'm buying this phone. What I also would have hoped to see is a seperate camera for macro. I don't mind how narrow the phone is as long as it's grippy andd not like a wet soap bar that slide right out of your hand. I kinda miss those grippy blackberry back covers though...
A lots of people experienced connectivity issues with previous versions Lagging 5g connection, wifi speed,... Would really appreciate if you could provide honest review on this.
I don't even care for camera, I'd buy this just because it doesn't have a gaping selfie hole on the front display. I just wish it would be less tall - I get that they're going for 21:9 aspect ratio for videos/movies that are filmed in similar aspect ratio but that's not the type of content I consume most of the time.
21:9 is much better for social media in my experience, but you make a very good point. I still would want sony to keep the aspect ratio though, its awesome
Finally get to see Sony's camera interface and more natural processing attached to a bigger high resolution sensor. Sad that it's still not 1", but the new stacked sensor does look like it works pretty good at night.
I’ve had so many bugs/issues with my Xperia 1 IV, I’m not going to trust Sony phones for a long time. Gonna have to get a Pixel this year unless Sony does some major updates
Hi all, if anyone knows how to trouble shoot. I need help! So, I have a XQ-DQ44 (Japanese Version) Sony Xperia 1 V. I flashed the US Modems and it got my phone to able to work with data and text in the states. I couldn't find a fix for voice calling/ VoLTE so I decided to flash the whole 62 (US) version on my 44. After flashing the 62, my phone doesn't recognize sim cards nor does mobile radio turn on. I tried to use Sony Companion to fix things, but it says: "Temporary device incompatibility detected." I'm trying to get back to stock 44 rom (from Xperifirm), but when I flash it I get the message: "Your device is corrupted and can't be trusted." So I have to flash back to the 62 to turn the device back on. Is there a fix to get back to stock rom? What can I do? *I did find a workaround to get VoLTE to work, but I need to get back to native stock rom. PLEASE HELP!!!! Thanks...
It's VERY disappointing that they don't give you a charger and in this case even a cable, in the box. They bullshit us by saying, it's going green. But then you have to buy those things separately anyway, because most older chargers are way less powerful than the new higher charging capabilities of the new phones. They want a grand plus for just the phone. Then ya gotta pump out another 40 bucks or more for the factory charger. 😝 Disgusting. Nice phone but come on manufacturers, get real on your pricing and cheapness with accessories. Face it. They're angling for the wealthy buyers, to keep profits thru the roof. All of them. The major operators anyway. Thanks for a great review. Y'all are the only ones who qualify speaker performance. And I for 1, appreciate it.
I take it as paying for the longevity. Such phone will be used for 5-6 years, at that point it's worth it to not skip on features you might want in the future. Speaking of course about headphone jack and SD card. Personally after couple of years with BT headphones I went back to cables. The convenience of not having to worry about charging, having my cable under the shirt so I don't have to put the headphones away and noticeably higher sound quality (even when comparing to 5x more expensive BT headphones) outweighs the fact that you can't use them more than a meter away from your phone. And while I have everything on cloud, it's actually that fact why I am using SD card reader anymore. When out and about, moving files from camera to cloud is much easier than having to carry additional dongle for SD to USB-C.
More stuff for apple to copy ;-) And to those who says it's an expensive phone. So was apple's 14 pro max when it was released, but it came without a 3.5" jack, no support for SD-card, no 4k display, no optical zoom, inferior speakers, inferior AF, slower charging speed, no 4k@120 FPS on all lenses, inferior OS, and so on ;-)
Finally, someone who knows what they're talking about. As much as Apple tries, they'll never be able to fix their awful white balance. They're stuck with yellow and green photos and videos for eternity it seems.
If you want to enjoy such Hi-Res and high quality sound from an iPhone or Galaxy, better of spending 100$ on a high end USB-C Dongle with built-in Hi -Res Dac. This phone has it included inside.
Everything in this phone is great. But I don't understand why sony take more serious the telephoto quality even if they use continue optical zoom. Then it comes the very limited software support.
Kudos to Sony for keeping the headphone jack and expandable storage in a flagship.

The Sony Xperia 1 V is simply the best smartphone in the world hands down. No other flagship comes close.
9:05 the absence of noise is mind-blowing
why don't you test the evening shooting in cinema pro, through this application you can get amazing videos in 4K resolution
Sony was, is and will always be the KING in premium Android smartphones. Nobody else can and will come close to it.
After using iPhones since iPhone 4, this will be my first Android device. I hope it won't disappoint. I actually use wired headphones (I own wireless headphones but I don't really like it) so I'm happy Sony includes a 3.5mm jack and a MicroSD card slot. Also, the notch is still incredibly stupid. I don't want a notch or a hole. Also, I want touch ID back. FaceID sucks.
I got tired of being locked-in by a single brand and just have to swallow whatever BS they come up with.
this phone supports the high bitrate snap dragon sound aka aptx adaptive bluetooth audio with bose QC ultras
@@infotechsailor well I didn't like the phone so i'm back on iPhone. It did disappoint.
Sony is the most underrated phone maker company right now! I hope asus and sony succed with their phones, because these two companies are something else!
i just pre-ordered this phone, was comparing this with the S23+ and Google Pro. but decided to go for this, simply because it runs on Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, which i feel is just a more superior chip than tensor 2. and it looks better than Samsung.
Wow, are the Xperia models still alive?? This brings me back to my childhood, one of my 1st cellphones was an Xperia ❤
Luckily Sony is a very determined company.
Pixel and Sony don't aim for the same thing, what is better depends on Personal preference, not on which one is better.
@@fa14bi-78 I agree with you except the price point they are not similar lol
it's not a point and shoot type of phone. it's more geared to camera enthusiasts
Exactly. Great phone for 3 years. Not worth the price unless money is not an issue for you.
I have just given rest to my old Xperia xz2 and Bought Xperia 1 V. No matter what people say about Xperia, Xperia is a reliable device.
How dare you give me information early...
@@CockpitScenes I beg your pardon... It's not worth getting news early when some aspects of the news could be misleading.
I agree. I am worried about low light videos/photos, but it is still early software.
@@TaiwanisMoving "Literally nothing will make an iPhone user switch. "

Long as Sony Xperia keep on providing SD card slot, 3.5mm headphone jack and 4K screen I'm happy. Currently using xz premium and this is my 3rd Xperia phone since switching from Samsung in 2012 and I have not regretted it once
XZ Premium was an excellent phone. I miss mine so much
Yeah Sony now just alone to survive against Goliath like a Samsung & Apple
Sony is always behind not just against Apple and Samsung, other brands too like Oppo, OnePlus, Xiaomi etc etc
All mainstream brands are way ahead of Sony in photography, design, price, eco-system and consumer base.
You should to buy IPhone 14 Pro Max. All android devices are TRASH
"I'm curious how the audio output compares between the LG and the 1 V."
Me too, I have the LG V50
Take my money sony, now you nailed it💪
One thing underrepresented IMO is the fingerprint sensor.
Hands down the best xperia mark 5 reviewer here.. ❤❤❤❤
I agree 💯

A flagship with
1. Physical fingerprint scanner
2. Expandable storage
3. Headphone jack
In 2023 ! After my own heart.

Sony proves to be the most enthusiast grade manufacturer. If you can bear the price, you won't regret.
While other phone brands are cutting down physical features on the phone like headphone jack and expandable memory, forces the consumer to use wireless headphones. Sony here standing strong, offering full features on a phone, with a back cover that does not shatter, while also making best wireless headphones on the market, and that truly says something.

I'm trying to get back to stock 44 rom (from Xperifirm), but when I flash it I get the message:
"Your device is corrupted and can't be trusted."
So I have to flash back to the 62 to turn the device back on. Is there a fix to get back to stock rom? What can I do?

Got my eye on this one. Hopefully Sony gets better at releasing software updates.
They are polishing and perfecting this phone every year, similar to Huawei with mate and P series, I really want to see their road map...
I love sony phones but problem is its quite expensive with the pricing.
