    Trans cooler upgrade is completely worth the peace of mind. On some of the older trucks, lb7, lly, lbz at least, it's well worth it to swap out your OEM transmission lines at the same time for more robust aftermarket lines. Get the confidence one of those tired old hose crimps doesn't let go, better serviceability, and any sludge that's built up in either is removed from the equation.

    Aftermarket trans cooler was a solid upgrade for my lb7. Dropped trans Temps by 20 degrees and engine Temps by 10 degrees. The mountains I'd overland on that would overheat my engine were no problem after that!

    • @beowulf885
      @beowulf885 Рік тому +2

      Hey, question, how did this product lower your "engine temperature" by 10 degrees? And are you talking about coolant or oil that lowered.

    • @KooshdaakaaGarage
      @KooshdaakaaGarage Рік тому +5

      @beowulf885 Hey man, no problem. I used a different trans cooler, but they should work the same. The trans fluid routes through the radiator to both cool the trans fluid when it's hot and to warm the trans fluid when it's cold. The hot trans fluid heats the radiator, which in turn heats the coolant and heats the engine, or otherwise exceeds the ability to of the radiator to keep temps within optimal temps. Also, the trans is bolted to the engine block, so the hotter the trans the hotter the engine and visa versa. So cooler trans equals cooler engine. I explain it on my channel if you want to come take a look sometime. Next, I'm installing an aluminum radiator to see how that affects the overall cooling. I'm especially interested in how much the clutch fan engages after that.

    I have a 2019 Denali L5P, i installed the WC FAB bypass thermostat and while hauling my 15,500lb 5th wheel i've seen trans temps as hot as 140 degrees, on a 12hr trip,on the stock trans oil cooler.

    I put the mishimoto trans cooler in my lbz. Dropped the trans temps a good 30 degrees over the factory trans cooler. I was getting 105-115 over ambient towing the passes with my travel trailer. Now I am lucky if I get 90 over ambient towing and typically run around 70-75 over ambient not towing instead of 90-100 over. At the same time I did a coolant flush, cleaned my stack, and installed the upgraded kennedy fan clutch and it also helped keep my engine running cooler as well. The fan clutch kicks on at 198-200 degrees instead of 220-225 like the original would so my engine runs much cooler as well. The best upgrades I have done to any my trucks is upgrading cooling on both the engine and transmission.

    Don’t forget there’s a thermostatic valve inline with the cooler lines on these trucks. A cooler won’t do much until that valve is bypassed because it’s like a thermostat in an engine it wants the truck to heat up to a certain temp before allowed fluid through to the cooler

    "This thing has a 36 gallon fuel tank"... Well I'm jealous. My truck used to have a 34 gallon tank. I say used to, because I bought a cheap, made in China fuel cap, and the vent didn't work. I drove for a couple of hours, stopped to refuel, and I didn't have the arm strength to remove the fuel cap. The vacuum was so strong, I had to pry the cap off. The vacuum caused the tank to start collapsing in on itself. Now my 34 gallon tank is about 26 gallons. I've since added a 88 gallon aux tank + tool box in the back, so not so bad. Just got a better quality cap for my aux.

    Back when I was still truckin with the Zebra, I had a couple small but very powerful fans on a manual switch I could turn on for climbing mountains and to cool the trans faster on the way down. Also used it a lot during the summer running hard then getting into slow traffic. That trans was holding 2,500 pounds of torque and those fans always kept it under 200 degrees which was really impressive running in the southwest mountain ranges in the dry summer heat.
    I think the same concept/idea could be applied to just about any truck.

    You should probably install the Wehrli Custom transmission thermostat bypass plug too. Synthetic trans fluids are not dependent on a specific temperature range to properly have the additive packages in them to perform properly compared to older mineral based trans fluids. The factory plugs have stuck closed. Great insurance policy.

    I added a trans cooler to my 2001 GMC Sierra 5.3L after finding my trans oil was black. Since the 1/2 ton didn't have a trans temp gauge, I added one as well. After flushing and replacing with synthetic trans oil, the temp only got to a high of 204° when pulling an 8k Travel trailer up over passes at 11,000 feet in the Colorado Rockies. This had that 5.3L in 1st gear working hard and needing air. On the highway towing it now stays a cool 165°. Going to get a Duramax someday but in the meantime, that trans cooler is great! I should add that after a season where the engine got hot towing, I replaced the thermostat, water pump, and fan clutch. Engine never overheated again. That fan clutch can slip and then nothing gets cooled properly.

    When you did your tests - did you account for the outside air temp (OAT) on each test? That's really what will help you measure your transmission cooler efficiency. The delta between your OAT and trans temp is what you want to measure. I installed a larger cooler on my 09 Tahoe and dropped the delta to about 50 degrees from OAT at highway speeds, or 80 degrees delta from OAT while towing. So, if it's 100 degrees OAT out, the highest I see on straight and level while towing is 180.
    I also have a 24 Silverado 2500HD - I'm thinking about the PPE trans cooler for that. But don't know if I will see that much of an improvement.

    Hello, very good video! I have a question! Do you think this works for a 2009 Peterbilt 335 automatic transmission, px6 engine? It is a tow truck and I feel like it needs another cooling system.

    @kyleford8848 11 місяців тому

    do they offer aftermarket lower thermostats? If you got the coolant temp down, wouldn't the transmission temp get lower also?

    I've seen videos of guys flipping these coolers upside down on the bracket so it's placed higher up so theres less restriction from the bumper and more air through the grille, would you recommend this?

    Thick master., this comment is kind of off topic. I tried to find a spot to make this comment but this is the only way I can get it to you. I have a 2005 2500hd with the LLY and I’m sure you know about the LLY overheating when towing heavy loads. I guess they upped the performance from the 2001-2004 models but didn’t increase the cooling capacity on the lly. They did fix the problem in 2006 and up by increasing the cooling capacity. I researched the crap out of this issue and finally came to the conclusion that the only way guys have fixed this issue is by adding an auxiliary radiator. I am about to do the project myself but figured I would give you the opportunity to do a video on this subject even though I believe you don’t have an lly. I think it would help a ton of people out as the mod is hidden in the diesel forums but is the only proven fix with the 2005 lly. Thanks man. I watch all of your videos

    Where is the best place to get a PPE lower radiator hose for a 2008LMM Duramax? Or do you sell them?

  • @Motodad32

    Do these newer Duramax trucks naturally run warmer. My LBZ tranny has never seen over 200 deg and that’s gross combined 25k in Arizona heat.

    Do the HD's have trans cooler thermostats like the 1500's? Would a thermostat mod/upgrade make even more of a difference?

    I went the Mishimoto transmission cooler route and 5/8 transmission lines. It mounted below my factory cooler. So thinking I could link the two together, also installed the PPE transmission pan averaging 160 degrees normal driving temperature. My cooler sets in front of my radiator with a gap of about 2 inches on my LMM.

    Just wondering if you should remove the trans oil thermostat (bypass valve). If the temps drop significantly, then maybe bypass valve needs upgrading.

    Do those 2500 trucks have the thermostat at the trans like the 1500 trucks do? If so get the bypass from ppe for that too and it'll really lower the temps... Great video man and glad to see you're back getting money from this.

    I've got a 2019 GMC 3500HD my trans temps with a stock cooler pulling our 17k fifth wheel are typically 174 -185. Not sure its even gotten over 200 even pulling the mountains of Colorado. So in that case I don't see any benefit for me to upgrade the trans cooler.
