This reminds me of the monkey trap. A coconut or gourd would have a hole cut big enough for a monkeys hand to fit through. Treats would be put inside and when a monkey would reach in to get the treats it’s hand would be too big to take out. The monkey wanted to get out of the trap but not willing to let go of what was inside
Ha that's funny. There's a lot of studies like that done on animals figuring out how the reward center works in the brain. There's one with mice where they had to hit some button to get a treat, but then once conditioned the mice were willing to endure a slight electrical shock just to reach the button. To them the pain was worth the reward.
Had a Melee bracket today and in the two sets I lost I can recall a bunch of interactions where I was definitely throwing myself at my opponents and hoping for the best. There's a major tourney in my region that will be my last tourney of the year, and going into it I'm going to keep this video in mind and restrain myself in the situations where I find myself losing. Great video Andy.
@@ssbmAndy I’m in Ottawa for school rn. I don’t think any of our players are super notable outside of our region besides TeamPlasmaN and Viceroi but I think we still have some pretty good up and coming talent like NMFC.
This is similar to a point Dabuz made. Playing aggressive does not equal running into ur opponent. It means forcing ur opponent to choose options and then capitalizing.
Yes. "Aggressive" is a spectrum imo. A player can be proactively aggressive by attacking a lot. But you can be passively aggressive by, for example, doing aerials in place at a certain spacing vs characters that wd forward a lot (luigi, samus, ICs). Sometimes terminology in smash is a grey area.
I feel like someones got a gun to my head and he's like "You better down air shine that fox every three seconds or it's over for you". Which of course leads to me getting gimped and hating myself.
i really only started to notice my growth after like 10+yrs in the fgc very recently, and it was bc i organized how i played. controlling urges is hard bc instant dopamine, but when you finally get the setup to land the dopamine inducing move...now that's the sauce
Yeah man. And what I find is that... After lots of moments of resisting, actually getting that next punish feels even better knowing that I had held off.
hi Andy as a fighting game player who struggles doing special inputs ie fire ball or dragon punch in street fighter or certain movements in melee because of my physical handicap which makes it so hard to keep up with players who can move their hands quicker than me it discourages me from trying sometimes but i usually don't give up . its more making sure im comfortable playing the character ive been playing sheik cuz shes easy for me i get unwanted inputs like a tap jump all the time. i must say your videos help me push myself to keep trying thank you very much :)
AJ thank you so much. I've put a lot of play time in to samus in melee which isn't a high apm character. What I've learned in my time is that playing "fast" doesn't always convert in to a favorable result. Decision making > many inputs. As you get better, the game becomes a lot more mental imo. Execution is still very important but I wouldn't let the speed of how people play intimidate you. Have you looked in to digital controllers like the boxx?
@@ssbmAndy hi again i don't feel like a boxx style would help me seeing as i have poor motor functions in my left hand and i feel that if there was an easier way for me for me to grip my controller (currently i hold the controller in my lap and have normal grip on my right hand and I use my palm as the gcn controller stick unfortunately doesn't grip with my thumb a modern controller ie a xbox controller or switch pro controller does so its unfortunately tough for me to keep clean movements)
Aaaandy, I want my dopamine and I need it now! It’s the puff from R1 pools yesterday, I admit to being a low level player and want to apologize for the bad attitude I gave you in response to facing your playstyle. Playing patient will get you wins, but then you’re sacrificing your own dopamine hits; I imagine this is why so many people play like chimps and why I reacted so passionately to it…it’s a little foreign to me. I only come to this one tournament each year and I come amped out of my mind, so of course I want to hit you, that’s why I’m playing the game and that’s why I drove out all the way out here lol. For me personally, and I’m sure it’s this way with a lot of “lower level” players, I want to play the game in a fun way more than I want to win an early pools game in tournament before getting crushed in the next round. I was kind of a bitch yesterday, and wanted to tell you that you played a hell of a game Andy. Playing you felt as challenging as playing Plup’s fox to me cuz I couldn’t catch up to your movement which forced me to commit to whiffing an attack or leaving the encounter. I might’ve tried kicking the missiles, but idk exactly how that interaction works in a way that I don’t take damage 🤷♂️ Good luck today man!
You know I didn't even see this until I got back from G9 and on desktop. I always wear an earbud on the ear thats closest to my opponent so I didn't quite hear everything you said. Something about camping. I wear the earbud like that on purpose for that kind of situation. It helps me not break focus in the game because I don't want to hear outside stuff. But hey man I really appreciate you writing that thoughtful response. It's all good man. No feelings hurt or anything. In tourney I just play the game, and thats how samus v puff goes. Just playing the MU. You can't just allow me to build charge shot so freely. You can dodge missiles by just moving around in the air puff can dodge and weave. Also you needed to threaten grab. Thank you for the movement compliment! I'll see you around tho. Genesis is my favorite major to go to.
As an Isabelle SSBU player, this is true. I found that A I’m too aggressive in disadvantage and try to abuse my lingering boxes too much. And B I found I play a lot better when I play smart, take advantage of openings, but don’t overstay my welcome.
For sure. But, I would argue to take full and utter advantage of any openings. Advantage can be defined by a couple of things, but, if they give you an inch you take that to a mile imo.
@@ssbmAndy also, I forgot to tell you. I love the video. I’m a mid player, but I shared it with my community. You make an extremely valid point that I think a lot of people could benefit from considering.
