Numbers are so fucking metal!
I wish Ron Jarzombek would be invited to do a Ted talk on music and maths(incl
12 tone or serial techniques) and composing and the difference.... can't help but feeling he'd be great....
Yep, that would be totally bitchin'. If only...
Thank you for confirming this is in fact how polymeters work. I've been trying to explain this concept to my fusion drummer dad for years using Meshuggah but he just won't except that it isn't just 4/4.
Meshuggah is all 4/4 for sure
let's make this easy. did it ever occur to you that the snare is always countable straight in 99% of Mehsuggah songs? It always adds up.
What does that tell you?
@@hazardeur it tells me that it's a polymeter. You have something like 13/8 being played on the guitar and kicks while you have 4/4 being played on the cymbals and snare. It is a little different with Meshuggah though because after the the last note of 4 bars of 4/4 it will just loop back to the start while the 13/8 is in the middle of the riff causing that last riff to sound really off kilter.
@@nespith yeah, that's right indeed!
Well, there’s a difference between performance and composition.
Composition? No they probably wouldn’t write all of meshuggah in 4/4 so right there everyone is wrong that thinks meshuggah is simply common time.
Performance? Yeah the listener is gonna be able to dance to the grooves and feel the common time but the performing musician is likely thinking about what he’s playing in subdivisions and compound times like what this essentially is.
This is amazing but the amazing part is NOT the poly meters. It’s the rhythm and “ counterpoint “ of the notes. Not the signature but the content. This is a great explanation as to how to visualize the concepts this album employs.
The true reality of meter is simply consistent 8th notes. You can play whatever tonality and whatever rhythm you want as long as it follows consistent eighth notes.
As with any rule in music, there’s always an exception.
Just as well, there’s a myriad of ways to perceive music too. Consistent eighth notes simplifies the entire argument and boils any and every time signature or rhythmic function into 4/4. You can write it all 4/4. The question is how do you feel the music. You can’t write it and you wouldn’t even if you could. How do you feel it. If you can answer that question accurately for yourself, your playing should reflect that and therefore you shouldn’t have a question as to the signature or subdivision of compound meter chunks. You’ll feel it.
In other words, the only language that can teach you what you need to know about music is ultimately music. That’s it. All these dumb fucks talking about this and that, theory concepts you raise to some level of super standard when it’s just a graph for clarity. It’s just a rule of thumb so when you’re like, huh minor sixth or major sixth this time around?
You can honestly answer why you chose to modulate.
Otherwise your just a dude with a keyboard who is basically telling people who know you’re full of shit just how badly you wish you had a clue.
This guy in the video? Has the whole thing going.
Comment sections are just posers. That’s my real input here. That’s about the only reason I actually wasted my time to inform the board.
Don’t worry about signature and complex and compound times when you can’t even work the music theory on paper in the first place.
This guy does this likely because he’s jammed his guitar so long he can literally make a motif of any note group. Pick any number of counts and any tonality of those notes and he gets to decide rhythm.
BAM
so he says I’m gonna develop a mechanism to provide the notes and quantity of count for myself just like he can with the licks yeah?
Wah lah
You have this form of serialism that is basically this dude’s signature sound.
Sounds like someone practicing through fourths and fifths with some twisted chords if you ask me but I’m just a 2 decade player who still doesn’t know much.
Sounds like the Devil practicing on your bones while you’re still in line waiting for the shine to take away the rainy day sway that has those shackles singing your name.
Great musician AND teacher. We need a new Blotted Science album soon!!!
Amazing lesson, thanks!
Ron is Einstein of metal , mad rock scientist
Way above Vai , Satch , Meshuggah , AAL or
Who knows the Djent bands we see now because they all listened to Meshuggah & blotted science & yes thank Satriani , he thought many well known guitarist

A little beyond me, but still awesome.
Happy Birthday Ron Jarzombek!
Youve helped me so much with writing i damn near owe you writing credits
This is fantastic. I also can't believe my ears with how both lines aren't clashing in un-listenable way.
SUPERB!
I've learned so much from these videos it's unreal. Thank you new watchtower is freaking awesome btw🤘
Came across you through comments on Adam Neely's channel re 12 tone row stuff.... Simply love these ideas
Honestly, now I get it. I never thought about writing instrument parts like that.
Its crazy to think how genius Ron is, and then to imagine the look on his face as he stares at Allan Holdsworths writing system.
Kamizi i was so fucking amazed and in disbelief when i saw that pic
Kamizi
It's very difficult to figure out
characteristics concerning
Ron.
Let me mention
authenticity.
That's enough for today.
euh ok !? I just know that I bought your LP because thats what I need ! thanks a lot for your awsome work !
mind blowing!!
Yes, but who did 9/11?
Lol
Carlos Ferrão
Hahahahahahahahahahahaha
The lack of (accessible) oil made 9/11 happen.
Thomas Adès or Brian Ferneyhough, probably. :P
MiskyWilkshake well played :p :D
So basically, this is what Meshuggah does but instead of between two guitars, it's between the strings (guitars and bass) and drums _and_ vocals?
Yep, this is what Meshuggah does all day. They are the masters of this stuff.
Hey Ron, i love your work. Is there gonna be a third Blotted Science release in the future? :)
I would be ecstatic if so.... and I wonder if the drummer would be one of the previous 2 or someone new!
Very clear explanation..thank you!!
Your methods of generating variation remind me of the Schillinger system of composition. I'm sure you've heard of it.
ron jarzombek ladies and gents
HE'S DONE IT AGAIN
Amazing
I remember an old music teacher and I discussing his various ideas about his particular serialism. Interesting however I really would do something rather different personally
Thank you
Mind blowing. there's nothing else to say! I mean, really, nothing!
Oh!! Genius
Call me a music school dropout (because i am) but isn't the "fully diminished seventh chord" at 3:45 just a Bb minor chord?
Good observation. And yes, Bb Db F is a Bb minor chord. In the Cessation Sanitation '12-tone analysis' video I explain that section as a G half diminished 7 chord followed by a G fully diminished 7 chord without the root. Forward to 1:15 in this video... ua-cam.com/video/67kdSOSB2OI/v-deo.html
Ron! Thanks for the reply and the video. Check your PayPal. :)
Ron pls we need new stuf! Spastic Ink 3 any time soon?
Que loco! Qua doideira com razão
you're a god.
There is one God, and He wrote the bible created the universe.
No God created the Bible and wrote the universe.
Yeah, this IS bible. And he perfected the universe of metal. Yep.
Ron, please make a new album of blotted science :(
bump
Ron is beyond theory
Please work on another Spastic Ink record Ron
wow!
Ron can we have an update on the new album i thought it was being recorded in 2015,but since then there havent been any news really.I love your work by the way!
Thanks for asking. Back in late 2015, Blotted Science had enough material written for another full length CD. I wrote 4 songs, Hannes wrote 5, and Alex wrote 1. After listening to the songs more in depth, and trying to record them, we came to the conclusion that the songs Hannes wrote weren't the right fit for Blotted Science. The 5 songs that he wrote for Blotted Science are now being reworked and will be one his next solo CD (I think they now have vocals). As a result of losing those songs, we are short about 20 minutes.
Aha,i see, thanks for the reply.Cant wait for the new album!
wow ‼️
My hat is off - it is AWESOME
Euclid would be proud.
Hey Ron what about the new album?
Genius
1 person disliked because they suck at math.
