GREAT breakdown of the "chords", Levi. ;-)
My fav of his was ''A Morning With Squeaky. I could literally see this little trippy, cute 'n' cheeky character causing slapstick mayhem in the background whilst the music was telling the other side of the story just as the music did to my huge collection of Warner Bros, Looney Tunes cartoons I collected on VHS as a kid. I also own a few oil paintings from the cartoon where each stencil was individually painted frame by frame. They sold them in Manchester Arndale Centre for a few yrs until they all sold out. The single characters were around £300-700 and larger paintings were £1000-£8000 per frame usually on a plain white background.
In the mid 90's I found a tape of a band I had never heard of, Watchtower. It was in the discount 5 bin with crap like Barbra Streisand, Cat Stevens etc...I bought it before the cover was neat. From that point on Jarzombek has been one of my favorite guitarists. Absolutely love his creativity
And he's a helluva nice guy on a personal level too.
Love seeing Ron on here, I taught lessons at the same place as him. Really sweet guy.
Both Jarzombeks are amazing musicians.
agreed 👍
I love Ron's music. Thank for the video, mate
Control and Resistance was one of the single biggest influences on me in driving me to obsess over the guitar, live for it, eat and breathe the sound of possibility, I listened to it over and iver again, on the short playlist in my pretty wide-ranging collection, Steve Tibbetts' Safe Journey was another like that for me.....
This is killer! So many possibilities! I’ll have to take a crack at these chords later in the week!
Man just to be able to say you're friends with Ron Jarzombek is priceless!!!
First heard of him when I purchased Blotted Science first album and have been blown away ever since. Got all the Spastic ink stuff, the SSOTC and Gordian Knot.
Amazing player and so are you Levi. Great job on the chords 👍
The combination of your ear and your knowledge is pretty amazing. You done a great job at something I wouldnt even attempt, just way beyond me. Thanks for the breakdown really enjoyed it.
Ron has been playing in a Rush tribute band called
“Exit Stage Left” here in San Antonio and what an awesome tribute he gives to Lerxst..
Thank you for making this video. When I saw Ron's demo vid, I wanted to set fire to my gear and then myself, but you've completely demystified the process. Not that I've not got all the hard work ahead of me, but at least I know the process, and actually guessed correctly a lot of the approaches you used. TO THE WOODSHED...
It’s worth pointing out, that’s MY process. The other guys may have thought of it very differently! In fact, I’m certain many of them will
The Man….The Legend….🤘🏿🤘🏿🤘🏿🤘🏿🤘🏿💯💯💯💯💯
This is class Levi. Ron is the man! 🤟🏻
Not sure what the problem is here. That is one of the most juiciest chord progression I have ever heard, if I was still actively playing I would be destroying this this. I can invision some really tasty lead and Melodie’s here, I might even pick up the old 6 string and do it.
lol
Seeing Watchtower live in the late 80's in a small club was just INSANE.
I know, I saw them on their 1st and sadly last tour in Germany Osnabrück. Is totally accidental that I was there, but I knew and loved them before.
Its insane how such an unusual arrangement of chords actually sounds good. Atonality is such a difficult concept.
It's been studied a lot in classical music. Practically all the "modern" composers have been influenced by it one way or the other.
It's cool how you like this atonal stuff and do it alongside the blues and Country stuff.
I play gypsy jazz and fusion and somehow they seem to feed into each other. Working on harmonically simpler music makes me better at more unusual chord changes.... probably as I get better at voice-leading in lines.
I think that's the key. I was REALLY into this stuff when I was 15, but it was from that prog perspective. As I got older and moved into working professionally the blues, jazz, country, and soul has come to the front... and that does wonders for your voice leading!
disregarding the bass notes changing and moving around, the major chordal tonal centers are as follows...
Dmaj 7 / G#minadd9 / Ebmin9 / C / C#7 - F in the Bass / Gm / A dim. / Emaj add9
Great vid. Is that a meshuggah I tattoo? Also great if so!
It’s not! 😂
@@LeviClay I'll let you off 😂 If you know the album cover you'll see how I mistook it!
Kinda makes me want that as a tat now haha.
Just to stay on the video topic, first I heard from Ron was 'a headache and a 64th' that my drummer friend showed me, and I was sold. He is unreal!
Cool rhythm too.
I think it's interesting the mixture of "tonal" lead lines over atonal progressions. One starts to pick up melodic patterns and associations even though the "progression" doesn't follow any real established traditional pattern. I also think the reverse is cool; standard progressions with atonal lead lines.
Yeah, I think this is an important point. I’m a functional harmony player. My ear exists in a functional harmony world. It’s what I’ve studied. So when I play lines, I’m going to have that sense of direction. If you asked me to do the opposite… I literally couldn’t 😂
Now think of a minor pentatonic based rock player. That’s a less extreme version of the atonal player. He probably doesn’t hear functional lines in the same way someone who’s played jazz for years does. But it doesn’t mean he can’t create a unique sound over a functional progression.
@@LeviClay - Interesting point about the pentatonic player. I remember my jazz instructor at University having us comp for him in one key and he would solo in a key a 1/2 step away. His lines were so clear and well-outlined that we, the rhythm section, sounded off.
Great videos, man. Love the transcriptions.
Well ... it's Jazz! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
It sounds a lot like something that Steven Wilson would write.
I cant download the app. It says thay its not on google Server
Have you messaged Ron?
@@LeviClay its your link, i his video the link guide me correct
@@ianlofeudo5526 ahhh I see - must have updated his link! On it
Switched off as soon as said didn't like Watchtower. I don't need that kinda negativity in my life, ha ha ah
Hey.... You are good on this fretboard (All the rules, so weird).... How to learn ?. I had this your friend watchtower for free in germany, but i have NEVER liked it. There is a Lot better sounding guitars out there to let mind brain fly away in/with. You said blues but i hear a Lot jazziiiii sounding and i normaly HATE jazz but your Play is very nice listen to 👍😁
