Phrygian Dominant is the fifth mode of Harmonic Minor and one of my favorite scales due to its exotic and dramatic sound. This video goes over the basics, as well as the chords in the scale and many methods of applying it all to making music across different instruments, including how to write solos and leads.
This scale is very close in structure to the Byzantine scale (AKA Double Harmonic Major).

I’m imagining a music instructor in another country, talking of the “foreign” and “exotic” sound of the C Major scale.

lol I'm seriously terrible, but you just gotta find the notes and stick to them. it's all one finger playing on the right hand, if you asked me to do chords you'd have to wait a while till I figure it all out. Also that was like the 5th take, the other ones weren't so nice :P
I cant play either but the amazing part about music theory is once you learn the guitar all you need is the technique of another instrument. for example you can play bass, mandolin, ukelele, and piano because you know the guitar

that's not actually Phrygian Dominant, it's the Double Harmonic scale, which is basically just Phrygian Dominant but with a major 7

The skill level, muscle memory, hand strength, etc to properly play flamenco... that is true guitar goals, I tell ya.
Flamenco music in my opinion is the most technical out there. If you can play that, I think you can play any other style.
The right hand has a steep learning curve ahead. It’s a bit more technical than just wiggling with a pick. Also, you have to really feel the rhythm.

FULL Diminished are ALL MINOR Intervals...
as in.....1, b3, b5, bb7
or...the Loc Maj6....Dorian #4...lydian #2....Loc b4, bb7
The A Lydian b3 is also a possible FULL diminished,

@@nathanaeldobias6660 Is this the kind of music you're talking about: ua-cam.com/video/X4MOLgIobs0/v-deo.html ? In that case, you can do just fine using the natural minor, pentatonic minor and occasionally harmonic minor scales. Dorian works very well, too. The chord progression is quite important for this sort of music as well. Use lots of dominant V chords. It's helps to end your melodic phrases by going from a dominant V chord and back to the minor I chord.
Those are just a couple of tips you can use to get started. I would suggest transcribing songs that you like and analyze them to figure out how you can get the same sound in your own music.

A harmonic minor was my second scale I ever learned 10 years ago. It’s still my favorite.

Prog bands love this scale. You can do some insane things in F# using phrygian dom since you can hammer on from your open string to the root.
Lamb of God uses it alot,I was listening to some LOG instrumental with the vocals stripped you can really hear it.
Lots of metal bands have this sound.

@@SignalsMusicStudio I wouldn't say it has chromatisisms, but it does shift between this scale and double harmonic major. It's also a great song to track the evolution of, from first recording in the 20s to the Dick Dale version. Depending on the musical context, that sixth degree differs.

Misirlou is actually in a scale that is extremely similar to Phrygian Dominant, but notably different at the same time. It's in Double Harmonic Major. Which can be thought of as just Phrygian Dominant, with a raised 7th.
So E Phrygian Dominant would be E F G# A B C D (E)
E Double Harmonic Major would be E F G# A B C *D#* (E)
One of the big giveaways from hearing Phrygian Dominant (or any mode of Harmonic Minor) is that large interval jump between that F and G# (In the Key of E) In Double Harmonic Major, you get a *second* large jump between the C and D# and makes it able to be used quite differently.
@@royalcat10 Yes correct. It's a raised seventh, not sixth as I mentioned. I feel however that its chord harmony more closely fits the phrygian dominant. Not sure but in the Dick Dale version I remember the melody follows the double harmonic while others the phrygian.
My comment though was more about a radio experience I had with a history of Misirlou over dozens of versions. You could hear both those modes used, depending on the musical context.

You can add a natural 2nd for the major feel, and you can easily play without it right after since it has the "accidental" texture.
I liked how you skipped the fact that's a V dominant chord and the "jazzier" implications. Ideal for rock bands and non-studying musicians, niiiiiiiiiiiice videos.
I really don't have much to offer from the jazz perspective, it's one of my weak points as a guitarist.

I'm a piano play and before that I played drums for ten years. my mother was classically trained and my sister can play most by ear. With all that said you've taught me so much and inspired me too be a better player with learning and applying modes and theory for a overall better understanding of music. In the E Phrygian Dominant scale, I just want to point out that F Major is the only chord that has it's relative minor (D minor) within the scale/key.

My favorite mode. I loved it, played it and wrote music using it even though I didn't know it existed and didn't know what was a mode or even a scale. Very dark indeed, but also very mysterious, deep, powerful, sensual and grandiose.

Can you do something about what makes "lava level music" so distinct? Like, whenever you enter a lava level in almost any video game, there's an extremely distinctive low tempo, somewhat syncopated almost harmonic minor or phrygian but not quite feel to it, but it's so unique and I'm not really able to understand why. You're the best UA-cam music theorist teacher out there and perhaps you can shed some light (blackbody radiation from molten rock I guess) as to why Lava Level music sounds the way it does. In Avenged Sevenfold's "Nightmare" there's a riff in the beginning that sounds like it could belong in one. The rock/metal feel to it.
Also since lava is just liquified minerals can we just call "lava level music" just "Molten Rock" or "Molten Metal" depending on what it leans towards?

I discovered this scale a long time ago when i was playing along with the music in a documentary about Iraq, I think. I figured out the E-F-E-Dm trick as well. I think "Night Boat to Cairo" by Madness uses it as well. NIce. Thank you for explaining.

Geez, this one really is a thinker, there are so many points of theory, it really makes you want to go back and revisit them all, harmonic minor scales, modes (not just phrygian dominant), sharp fourths and tritones, diminished seventh arpeggios, chord construction and naming, pedaling with different options (bass or inbetween notes)... Jam-packed, really. And that ending solo... Awesome stuff from beginning to end.

Amazing tutorial, specially for people like me who almost don't have any theoritical knowledge but get to know these all on a sudden and can co-relate things he always had loitering inside his mind. Absolutely love your channel, I've been polishing up my music theory by binge watching your videos. Superb stuff, thank you so much for putting it together!
Indian classical music relies heavily on on-stage improvisation within a particular mode (i.e., sticking to a tonality throughout within a piece while having the players improvise within it), so there's such a plethora of scales and modes involved. Modes like the lovely Mixolydian, Phrygian Dominant, Dorian or Mixo b6 etc. sound quite familiar as a result (and have corresponding 'ragas').

7:50 in stead of 3 3 2 2 you should done 3 3 2 2 2, that actually is a flamenco rhythm. Its called bulerias. Look it up.
What you chould also do is have a 12/4 time and change chords on every three fourth notes but have the percussive "down beat" on 3, 6, 8, 10, and 12. This rhythm is called soleá
