This line is my single favorite line in songwriting.
A beautiful analogy that exactly represents anxiety. The sun, being the spotlight, is referring to being seen, to putting yourself out there. But what happens when no one responds to what you say, or when you find yourself in an awkward conversation, suddenly empty on words, struggling. There’s a point in time, after failing so much, you just never risk standing in the sun again. For why step into the sun if you keep getting burned?

Yeah. I have ASD so the line is pretty literal for me. When I screw up, no on tells me where I went wrong because they assume I already know or that I did it on purpose.
Honestly, my friends would always get mad because I had severe anger issues/mood changes. They never told me directly what I was doing wrong, but just that they didn't like it when I got frustrated. P.S, I couldn't control it back then.

I haven't had it as hard as Evan, but the first time I listened to this musical, I sobbed. I've never had suicidal tendencies, but I have suffered from anxiety my entire life. I've experienced the crippling loneliness that feels like no one would notice if you vanished into thin air. When I heard this, I couldn't believe it. I felt so seen. And it helped me realize I matter just as much as everyone else. Thank you, Dear Evan Hansen.

While I was in a mental hospital, I made a friend with a boy who loved DEH. He helped me write a song there. I just watched the movie and was reminded of him.
I feel so connected to Evan and realize how far I’ve come. I’m so thankful for these art forms that make people feel heard and seen.

Having anxiety is like being trapped in your mind, I really related to the part when even said "tapping on the glass" and "when your falling in a forest and no one is around did you ever really crash or even make a sound?" I hate being trapped and this song really makes me feel heard and helps me feel a bit better.

@@sophiaredwood5825 usually introverts form families where an extrovert adopts them all. This is usually how friend groups in elementary schools form. A really weird extrovert or two adopt(s) a bunch of introverts and it just kinda happens. Sometimes extroverts bring random extroverts into the group though, and if the wrong kind of extrovert worms their way in and refuses to leave, this special bond can be broken. So yeah. Forgive my ramble, internet stranger...
Also, you're more likely to find introverts online than anywhere else because lots of us get really anxious in social situations with unfamiliar people.

As for speaking intellectually? Hmm, lately I resort to thought-provoking questions or hypothetical situations (some stupidly fun, others actually super interesting)... Like... “If all of a sudden you met your future child and they were your age because of some time-related thing, and they knew you were their (younger) parent, how do you think the conversation would go? Any interests you think you both would have? How would your friends react if the same thing happened to them?”
Also stuff like, “What is a donut without a hole?” or “Why is hot chocolate called what it is despite its actual temperature?” and stuff to that effect, haha.
I also tend to think a lot about people and interactions and identity and stuff but that could be a bit long 😂

this song always reminds me of being a person who has undiagnosed autism (me). especially lyrics like “i try to speak but nobody can hear so i wait around for an answer to appear” it reminds me of how i didn’t know how to explain what i was feeling and how i longly wanted people to notice that there was something wrong. there are so many other lyrics that explain what its like to experience life the way you were taught to and not the way you do.

There’s this line in the epilogue of the book, that goes
“the me I am is not the me I was. Just like the me I am is not the me I will be. Those versions of myself I can’t change or predict. I’m not even sure I have much influence over the present me. But it’s all I’ve got. I probably shouldn’t fight it.”
That line physically hurt me when I read it. I’m not exactly sure why it hit me so hard, but I ended up writing it on a note that I taped to the wall next to my bed so I could read it when I needed to before I go to sleep. I put it in my Instagram bio. The words are just so powerful, just like everything about this musical. This musical has given me a reason to keep going. A reason to live. A reason to believe that “you will be found.” That I may actually be more than I’ve always been. I’m so grateful that I found this musical. It has honestly changed my life, and I more than likely would not be alive without it.

When you have seen the show and the verse, "When you're falling in a forest, and there's nobody around, do you ever really crash, or even make a sound." Has so much more meaning, and it kills you. **Spoiler** Evan tries to kill himself prior to the start of the show by climbing a tree and letting himself fall to the ground, hence the cast.

** ADDITIONAL WARNING FOR MORE MAJOR SPOILER TALK **
One of the things I love most about the book of this show is that there are all these little subtle details that make the emotional moments hit even harder... like the fact that it's not that Evan consciously or actively jumped from the tree. And the fact that he spends right up until the end of the show in denial to even *himself* that it wasn't just an accident. The implication is that he really did start off climbing up the tree just for something to do (or at least convincing himself that was the case), and at some point along the way it got a little trickier to climb, and instead of keeping going or climbing back down he just kind of... let go... gave up.
And, for me at least, that kind of resigned passiveness in it hits hard. Although I've thankfully never been suicidal myself, I've definitely had my fair share of mental health issues that I've spent a LONG time being in a whole lot of denial about, and I can't help but think that if I ever had reached that point.. that's probably more along the lines of how it might have come out for me too. Something where it could be easy to be in denial about it even having *been* what it actually was, and something that could be easily passed off as "nah, it was an accident".
Aaanyway, sorry that just got awkwardly personal! But the point is, yeah... the particular way it's all revealed is SO well done and honest and gutting. And you don't even realize until after it's revealed how much the show has been building up to that moment, either!

Your troubles feel real. Because I can relate. Watching this movie and listening to this soundtrack has made me realise I am not alone. There are kids like me that struggle everyday and there's kids like Connor who are unseen. We go unnoticed but that doesn't mean we aren't there. We aren't alone. Non of us. I’m in college now. I’ve found a circle of people to call my genuine friends and I’ve never been surer of that in my life.
Hearing this for the first time and this gave me flashbacks to middle and high school when I was too afraid to connect, too busy wallowing in my own self-pity, afraid my differences only inconvenienced those around me or made them uncomfortable. Now I’ve grown and I’ll always be grateful for that.

The "Falling in a forest part" really makes me think of someone with suicidal thought, ready to jump off a building (The whole falling in a forest), question if they have, or ever make a sound either way, feeling like no one cares enough about them as up to this point they feel like no one hears them, and no one is waving back at them.
But right as they're about to it, someone intervenes and stops them, the first time they managed to make a sound, the first time someone waved back at them, hence the full sentence finally being said "Is anybody waving back at me"

@@artanimeandothershtuff965 yeah i think its probably the hardest, mostly because the sheer amount belting at the end, while still having to maintain the sociall anxious character of evan. for forever is also up there in terms of the hardest songs though- i used to have a female range, but i started taking testosterone around a year ago so i now have a range that makes it a lot easier to reach the notes in my opinions.

Does anyone notice that every person that has played Evan Hansen has used extremely consistent vibrato every time they sing? Do you guys know why?
Well, I’ll tell you. Whether it’s their choice to sing like this or they just sing like this naturally, it still works well with the character. Evan Hansen has anxiety and whenever he talks to someone, he’s always shaking or stuttering or whatever. So you can imagine why the constant vibrato works with his character. It gives off the illusion that he is shaking or stuttering like he always does. Let me hear what you guys think. No hate please. ❤️
(edit (03/04/22): hi! i’ve been reading the comments and i realized that i didn’t really make myself clear about the vibrato thing and some people seem to misunderstand. 1. i did not mean that only this song was meant to be sung with vibrato. 2. i know that vibrato is a natural occurrence that comes to a singer with practice. i sing with vibrato and have trained in singing since i was three years old, so i should know. 3. i know that most, if not, ALL, professional singers, whether Broadway or not, have the ability to sing with vibrato. what i was trying to comment on was that Ben Platt’s vibrato (and yes, i also know that this is how his vibrato sounds all the time) is very fast, intense, and has a unique color that fits the character of Evan and fits this song very well. granted, i was thirteen when i made this comment and was not the best at expressing my opinion all the time, but this is what i meant to say. also, you can control your vibrato to produce a different sound and color or just not use it depending on what character you’re playing and what song your singing. in an opera, during a slow ballad, you would use a lot of vibrato when you sing to get a mature tone and match the overall “color” of the show. However, if you were playing a kid in Matilda, if you already have your vibrato and you’re a little older, you would make your voice slightly higher-pitched and use little to no vibrato to give the illusion through sound that you’re a seven year old child. lastly, please remember that this comment was my opinion and take on the song, and i still believe that Ben Platt’s type of vibrato fits Evan’s character. if you personally don’t agree, good! i’d be happy to hear your thoughts, but don’t be mean. it doesn’t help anyone. stay safe guys!💖

I noticed that when I went to see it for it myself! The live version will forever be better than any recording, but I'm glad they didn't edit the vibrato out in the recorded version, because it fits the character so well

JaeLynn Carver if you want to know how i learned, i would start by singing and walking around a room and when you reach a long note, you sustain it and then you shake your hands while holding the note, making a vibrato type sound. do this for a few days until the sound comes naturally to you. ❤️
