I think Michael Jackson released "Beat It" in 1983 and Queen released "Another One Bites The Dust" in 1980.
Gosh I remember blasting the song all the time in my Dodge Polara in my school parking lot!
Well, since you mentioned Michael Jackson. He and Freddie were friends. Queen wasn't going to release this song as a single but Freddie let Michael hear it. Michael told them they were crazy not to release the song as a single in the US. So they did and it was one of their biggest US hits. And the rest is history. True story, look it up.
Well that is.. until they actually tried to collab together and Michael HAD to have his pet Llama in the studio. Freddie learned the, don't meet your heroes lesson the hard way😂
The llama story is rubbish... Maybe there was a llama but that's not why they fell out.
@@mindmine2110 yeah, I'm sure the llama was probably real, as it's believable from MJ, but Freddie was apparently caught using cocaine in MJ's bathroom and that is why they fell out.
Allegedly...
@@mindmine2110 I guess the llama story is the 'family friendly' version of events! 😆
Freddie did say in an interview in 1984 that he hoped that they could work on something together again but they both barely had time as Freddie was living in Munich at the time and Michael was in LA. Note Queen never went back to USA with Freddie after 1982.
Freddie was busy with Live Aid and then Magic Tour in 1986
Then his collaboration with Monserrat in 1988, the miracle album in 1988-1989. Recording Innuendo and Made in Heaven in 1990, not to mention his illness at that point would make traveling difficult.
Michael was then busy with Bad and Bad would tour in 1986-1989 and he decided to "retire" and by the time Dangerous was released Freddie had already died.
One of the greatest bass lines ever made
God bless John Deacon!
You should also give credit to guitarist Nile Rodgers and bassist Bernie Edwards of Chic as well. John was hanging around with these two getting inspiration for bass parts to be used with Queen songs. Nile and Bernie inspired John's bass playing on songs like Another One Bites The Dust.
Don't forget Pink Floyd's "Money"
IMO John Deacon was Queens secret weapon. You get through the other 3 and then you get to John Deacons songs and bass lines on the others' songs.
John Deacon wrote this song
The Greatest*
When an interviewer asked what his favorite instrument to play live was Freddy said "The audience, darling!" The truth of that was never more evident than the Live Aid performance. That performance was absolute band perfection.
Freddy is one of the all time great vocalists!!!!! Not even debatable
true that
I totally agree. Great one of the best front man ever r.i.p. freddy
I agree he is one of the greatest all-time vocalist but I have a little trouble putting him above Steve Perry but they’re both right there at the top! RIP dear Freddie
Gone too young like Karen Carpenter!
AGREED
This song is so great and that bassline is universally recognized.
Since y’all mentioned the bass line, I thought you’d be interested to know that the bass player, John Deacon, wrote the song.
Also, hi-hats have been around since jazz music started to get big.
You're right Asia, this song was recorded in 1979, and MJ's signature sound really emerged with Thriller in 1983-84. Nevertheless, MJ also had other influences from Funk and the new wave of Hip Hop too... Queen & MJ = TRENDSETTERS! 😎😎😎
@Bill Blackman "Thriller"? Wrong! "Recording took place from April to November 1982 at Westlake Recording Studios in Los Angeles, with a production budget of $750,000".
@Bill Blackman In that case we're both right. The album Play the Game was recorded from 1979 into 1980! The album was released in late June 1980 ~ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Game_(Queen_album)
An amazing fact about Queens' lead guitarist Brian May. He was actually working on getting his Ph.D in astrophysics when Queen was formed. Music meant so much to him so he put his doctorate on the back burner. After Freddie Mercury died, Queen disbanded. Even while still part of the group Brian and his father designed and built a new kind of guitar. Brian's IQ has been measured in the 160's. That's even beyond Big Bang Theory smart. So he was a real genius on top of being a musical genius. after Queen disbanded, Brian went back to working toward his doctorate. He finally got it in 2006 or 7. He's now Dr. Brian May Ph.D. He's also written about 6 books on the subject of astrophysics. He's even worked with NASA periodically.
Actually all surviving members of Queen had advanced degrees...
Another One Bites the Dust was released in 1980.
Billie Jean was released in 1982.
I think Michael was very influenced by this song. Even the lyrics. Queen start with 'Steve walks warily down the street, with his brim pulled way down low.' The brim pulled low was a big part of Michael's act. Both absolute musical giants of course.
Freddie was the ultimate showman (that STRUT!) with a one-of-a-kind voice. I so wish I had been able to see them in concert.
The moment when you realized Queen influenced MJ (or Quincy Jones) was priceless. The beautiful and astute Asia heard it from Beat It, but I heard it from Billy Jean... I think it's both. Judging from the number of times Queen songs have been sampled, or stolen in the case of Vanilla Ice (check out Queen's Under Pressure), I think it's both.
Eddie Van Halen played the guitar on Beat It
John Deacon wrote not only this song, but the bass line for Under Pressure as well.
I heard the Billy Jean beat also. But i don't think Queen and MJ are influenced by a track of the other. It is more likely that it is the influence of the music area at that time. Although you never know for sure ofcourse
Again, I'm a year late but I can't resist. I saw a Freddie interview where he said he was 37 yrs. old and he could learn so much from Michael Jackson who was 25 yrs old at the time. He said Michael Jackson liked Queen and on a number of times, more than a few, he encouraged them (Queen) to release Another One Bites The Dust as a single in the United States....it shot to #1 and Freddie smiled and said, "Michael was right". I love both Michael & Freddie..Queen...they're amazing.
Shout out to Marci Sorrell for starting the story. John Deacon, the bass player wrote this song, and he was inspired after hearing a disco band called Chic playing a song called Good Times. Since you're connecting Freddie to Michael Jackson, did you know...Eddie Van Halen wrote and played the solo on the original album for Beat it!
And I learned recently that Steve Lukather of Toto played the rhythm parts.
This was written by John Deacon(bassist) and he is underrated for his talent. Originally the other members didn’t want to release it because it was their take on the Disco sound. Queen is their own genre you can’t put them in a box thinking that they only have one sound. Queen were gods of Arena rock and the rock anthem.
Michael did innovative things in music but he loved rock n roll (now classic rock). Another One bites the dust came out in 1980 and beat it 1983. Michael also use Eddie Van Halen to do the guitar solo and riff of "Beat It".
The only group to have number one hits written by every member of the group
This was written by the bass player john deacon. Freddie mercury.lead singer. Brian may guitar.roger Taylor drums.
When my husband’s best man gave his speech/toast at our reception the last thing he said was “the only thing left to say is…” then the DJ came in with the line “Another One Bites The Dust” of this song. We had 125 guests and they started laughing so hard you could barely hear the song.
Yes they influenced MJ....he used to follow them around to all their concerts..notice the one glove that M.J wore...look at early Queen, Freddie with the glove...by the way the bass player, John Deacon wrote this 🤩
Those struts… nobody has ever done it better! He OWNED every stage he was on! What a loss.
This takes me straight back to my childhood in the early 80s, this song on the jukebox at the skating rink, and everyone on the floor, including me in my white skates w/purple poms on the toes. 😆
That Stingray bass is absolutely legendary. One of the greatest instruments in the history of rock and roll. That growl is so distinct.
I think Queen and Freddie have influenced every single artist since they came out....
Even if the artist doesn't know it.
Which could be said of the Beatles too, seeing as they heavily influenced Queen...
You got to do the Queen performance at Live Aid from 1985. It's one of the greatest live performances of all time.
"Queen" songs will be forever relevant.
At 70 years old, Queen is still my favorite group first their originality and mastery of the genre. I love how A & B called out their influence on rock music for decades following.
Freddie... iconic! Queen as a band, legendary!
Great reaction! Yes, of course they had the hi-hat back then! I loved this when it first came out but did not realize it was Queen at the time or who Queen was. I was in marching band and a friend of mine arranged it and wrote out parts for the band so the band could play it at our big rival football game. "(Rival school name) bites the dust".
I think you're the only reactor that has picked up on how similar Freddie and Michael's vocal tendencies were
When this song came out in the US, people actually thought it was sang by a black band/singer. Michael attended Queen Concerts and vice-versa. Check out "There must be more to life than this" a collab between Michael and Freddie.
John Deacon the bassist was hanging out with the band Chic and it was inspired by their song 'Good times'. Michael Jackson heard the song and persuaded them it has to be released as a single. Roger Taylor the drummer hated the song and the disco sounding beat. It got released in 1980 and was number one on the US Black music charts...Michael hung out with the band at that time, so you are bang on right about the influence, he adored Freddie.
Bernard Edwards (RIP) the Bassist for Chic actually showed Deacon techniques to improve his Bass playing on driving tracks like this one. You can hear that same influence in Bass and Percussions in Michaels song Billie Jean. However, Michael says the Hall and Oates song "I can't go for that", released in 1981 inspired the drum and bassline for the song.
Freddie Mercury is by far one of the greatest performers ever I grew up on this music through my mum and still listen to it now I was born in 86 god I feel old 😂😂😂
Born in 84 we are old Darren
In the history of Rock, Bassist always goes with iconic bass riffs from John Deacon to Steve Harris to Bassist who played in Ozzy's band doing Bass riff for No More Tears
Great reaction guys. Another classic sing-along from Queen is 'We will rock you'.
Yes
Fun fact: it was Michael Jackson who told Queen they should release this as a single....and now is their best selling single with over 7 million singles sold!!!
Bohemian Rhapsody is their best selling song, it recently received an award for over 10 million copies sold, in the US.
It's their second most streamed song other than Bohemian Rhapsody
This is my favorite queen song of all time
I love Queen!!!
I highly recommend
- Somebody to Love (Live in Montreal 1981)
- Under Pressure ( Wembley 1986, Freddies crowd improv is SO fun)
- Live Aid
- White Queen (Hammersmith Odeon)
Let's not forget Stone Cold Crazy.....live at The Rainbow.
Somebody to Love Live is a must!
Pleased to hear someone else in the family appreciates quality. Tell them to check out Killer Queen and Fat Bottomed girls.
Queen was HUGE during my highschool years. Juke boxes made "dollas" just off their songs alone.
Jackson came after queen. Queen was created 70's this song came out in 1980. Michael was most popular in the eighties. Thriller his biggest selling album came out in 82. Perfect timing after this in 80.
A bit more history on Michael hearing this song
Another One Bites the Dust” could have been an album track. Then, Michael Jackson listened to “Another One Bites the Dust.” Jackson told Freddie Mercury the band should release the song as a single from the album.
Actually, Michael Jackson began his career as a small child singing in the Jackson 5, with his brother's, long before Queen.
@@chapmaned24 as a single artist. Not a band or group. Phil Collins was in genesis then solo. Also read history on the song and see Michael heard the song and encouraged them to release as a single.
@@jaycordner3890 Off the Wall came out in 1979. In addition, his first solo album came out in 1972.
@@chapmaned24 queens first album was recorded in Dec 71
So funny! When BJ said: The hi-hat may not have been invented back then? I started laughing. I remember when this song was released and we definitely had hi-hats...lol FWIW, the hi-hat was invented in the 1920s. Love the reactions!
This song came out before Michael Jackson's Thriller album and before Michael Jackson became HUGE. Mind you, MJ had already released Off The Wall, but MJ only became an insane superstar when Thriller was released. However, I think MJ had an ear for great stuff and I think he encouraged Queen to do this song (am I imagining that? . . . but I think I heard that somewhere).
Oh it is most definitely a Queen song, that bass line is instantly recognisable. One of many written by bassist John Deacon.
Bob Seger had a line in "Turn the Page"
>>>
Out there in the spotlight
You're a million miles away
Every ounce of energy
You try to give away
As the sweat pours out your body
Like the music that you play
>>>
That describes Freddie Mercury to a tee. He gave his all on the stage. RIP, Freddie. God rest you, man.
I never thought 'til you said but those opening bars to 'Billie Jean' are very reminiscent of this. Both are amazing songs, iconic.
Roger Taylor the drummer did vocals in his own band The Cross and Brian May the guitarist in the Brain May Band.
Roger has at least half a dozen solo albums (and a live internet gig from 1994!) as well as three with The Cross, while Brian has three solo albums and a couple of soundtrack albums too, as well as a live concert release.
This song brings back so many memories but 1, in particular, is my son, (who is now 42) when he was a baby and would hear this song he would crawl over to the first thing available to pull up on and he would stand up and bounce through the whole song...to this day I think about that every time I hear it. Sorry, just a bit of my history here lol.
Beat it!
Spot on there! MJ was directly influenced by this song and also some of Queen's next album Hot Space.
Queen didn't invent this style though, John Deacon (bassist and author of this song) was hugely influenced by soul music and artists like Nile Rodgers.
Music is one big loop.
First verse - Valentines Massacre (gangsters & machine guns)
Second verse - Another lover gone or bites the relationship dust
Third verse - Unknown forces trying to bring us down, but we’re still standing
I love Asia, she is so positive and nice. Asia and BJ are My favorite reaction youtubers! Greetings from Finland: :)
Freddie Mercury was and probably still is, THE GREATEST vocalists of all time.. no doubt about it.. no debates needed.. it's a fact!! God rest his soul.. sorely missed.. the KING of Queen
This song was written before Thriller Album. However, the Bassist for Queen got inspired by the Bassline for Rapper's Delight and came up with this Bassline.
Love that Freddie strut- peacocking his way across the stage! John Deacon who plays base came up with that first and they built the song around it- I think! I guessed they nailed it!
Queen’s *bass* player, John Deacon wrote all of this song. Nailed it for sure!
John Deacon, who wrote the song, had spent some time with Chic, and I think you hear that in this song. Brian May even does Nile Rogers inspired guitar during the song. The Lyrics were inspired by the St Valentines Day Masacre...a mob hit back in the day.
Michael Jackson heard them play this in the studio and he was blown away. He was like you got to release this. He was cool with Queen.
Both Queen and Michael Jackson (and the Jackson 5) were huge. This song was first released in 1980, three years before Billie Jean.
Years ago when in high school this song was played everyday on the intercom system after winning each round on the way to the boy's basketball state championship. That was really fun times🏀🏀🏀
The best bass line by Queen is Dragon Attack from the same album
Howard Stern was interviewing one of the band members of Queen about 20 years ago and they actually was going to give this song to Michael Jackson and Michael Jackson told Freddie Mercury that they should do it themselves.
Apparently, Michael convinced them to release the song, and said it would be a huge hit.
MJ and Freddie Mercury certainly influenced and were fans of each others work. It was that high level of perfection.
This definitely takes me back to 1982! We did a pompom routine to this song - it was so BAD!!!
I love how y’all hear Michael in it. And then question who influenced who. From what I’ve read this song was a huge influence on MJ. But this is Queen’s apex and MJ soon after released thriller. I think they have similar influences. But I love how Queen dips a toe in a style of music and own it but never repeat themselves.
Yup written by the bass guitarist John Deacon absolute genius
You guys should watch Queen at Live Aid, it's a longer video, but it's definitely worth it!
This was a song our high school band played on Friday nights when our boys made a touchdown in early 80's
Theres a great video out there comparing the vocal ranges of Freddie and MJ, its GREAT! Two amazing voices.
The influence IS there… because othered learned from Freddie! ❤️
My wife is Jamaican and this is the ONLY "rock" song she liked before we met. (Now she tolerates them...most of them.)
Oh I bet she likes many more now!
Released on this day in 1980 #AnotherOneBitestheDust #BSide #DontTrySuicide #TodayInMusicHistory #MusicHistory #ClassicSingle #7InchSingle #ClassicRock #JohnDeacon #QueenHistory #MusicIsLife
This song came out a few years before Michaels masterpiece album came out in 83" ; so yea there was lots of similiar sounds roaming the pop and rock world at that time. Classic Queen!!
Very instinctive and perceptively precise about MJ and Queen both influentially dedicated to their art as musicians and as fans of great music in general
This one is all funky, I love it! Queen was so different. ❤
You gotta love their music. Pure 🔥
Watch this song performed in Montreal 1981. Freddie is amazing, even in his short shorts!
My high school band played this song and “We are the champion” for wrestling matches. Our school is in the wrestling hall of fame because of how many state championships and national champions we have had.
No matter how many times I’ve heard this song it still give me me goosebumps!!!
Yes, Queen again 🙌 Thankyou darlings. They were amazing and they left a stounding music legacy. Love them 😘 Keep up the good work 👏🏻
Beat ir is 1982
This song of Queen is 1980
"Another one bites the dust" was a term prior to this song. While it can be traced back as early as the 18th century, modern usage goes back to the 1930's B cowboy movies. BTW, AOBTD came out in 1980; "Beat It" was released in 1982 so it's possible they influenced each other. It's hard to say. We are talking about the work of giants.
Just read previous comment and Jayhawk is right. 'Another One Bites the Dust' was released(Wikipedia) in 1980, MJ released 'Beat It in 82'(Wikipedia) and Billie Jean in 83'(Wikipedia). Of course, how long these hits stayed on the shelf, before being released is unknown, but reading about this interaction explains that MAYBE Freddie had an influence on MJ.
Memory bubble: 10 y/o at the roller skating rink! Crystal ball shinin', people bouncing and skating....all smiles. Gold. :)
From the #ClassicAlbum released on this day in the U.K. in 1980 #TheGame #TodayInMusicHistory #MusicHistory #MandatoryListen #MustHave #Masterpiece #80sRock #ReinholdMack #QueenHistory #MusicIsLife
I read an article that said Queens bassist John Deacon , (told by Brian May -Queens guitarist), was very influenced by Nile Rodgers and by Chic- Good Times when he developed "Another one bites the dusts' " funky bass line. It was inspired by Chic's sound.
In high school my favorite bands, sounds, were, Queen, Journey, Eagles, Chic (Good times- one of my fav), Sister Sledge, Gladys Night, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Earth wind and fire (my fav song at the time "September", Boogie Wonderland) and the Ohio Players...OMG i loved "FIRE"), Stevie Wonder, Commodores, "Brick house"-one of my all time fav too, Styx....etc
Michael Jackson's "Beat It" was actually musically written to be a rock song and MJ producer used Eddie Van Hallen to rock it out. He changed the song. The musical sound was set by Eddie. He did it in secret so his band members wouldn't know. But the song became a huge hit. He wasn't paid or credited for any of it. but Eddie played the guitar as no one else could and it didn't take long for people to learn it was him.
Queen had also had their songs in the movie Highlander & TV series Princes of the Universe is a good song
Amazingly, the drum breakdown is just like “Billie Jean”… which was two years after this song. Good catch… and they’re both greats and love them both, so no shade thrown (if it seems like that’s where I was going)
Freddie's style of showmanship and singing is his own. Influenced many. He named various musicians he was influenced by (The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix) but I never heard Michael Jackson on the list though as has been said below - it was MJ that convinced them to release this as a single.
Quuuuuueeeeeeeeennnnnnn!!!! Yes!!! Long live Queen. We love and miss Freddie. A LEGEND!!
I am so loving your rock journey! You are all over my childhood!! lol I am old!
On the Bohemian Rhapsody reaction he said he didn't think he knew any of Queens songs but I bet you he knew this one everybody did
It was the NYC club DJ's that made this song what it was. It was only supposed to be a B side. Once the club DJ's found it....it was over! People started demanding to hear it which soon found it's way to the radio.
The great Queen bassist John Deacon wrote this song, and it was released in 1980
This hit was written by bassist john deacon and queen has a lot of great songs that you've probably heard but just dont know it's them. Their live aid performance and somebody to live montreal 1981 to two great must see performances
My favorite song by them 💖
Listen to Queen "Under pressure" live at Wembley 1986. One of the best bass riff ever & u will see Freddy command the crowd.
I wish you had a Queen Playlist, it would make suggestions easier. You should watch one vision live at Wembley or the extended version official video, I think you'd like it. Can't go wrong with Queen. Freddie definitely influenced Michael Jackson, and they did collaborate. Freddie in his early years even used to wear one glove.
Do Queen "Somebody to love" but it must be the live version 1981 in Montreal. You'll love it. What a performance!!
John Deacon was an excellent bass player, a shame he retired in 97. He was the secret weapon of the band, he didn’t write many songs, but they are all great. Freddie really enjoyed to sing this number and he wanted to match John's imagination so much that he sang while recording process until his vocal cords started to bleed.
Pls, check out the Dragon Attack at Montreal 81 for another amazing bass line in it.
i have the concert DVD of QUEEN in Wembley stadium and it's great Freddie Mercury is fantastic
Queen is my favorite band ever!! Great reaction!
The band Queen, one of the most influential bands ever. All these guys were experts at their craft
