Beautiful gardens. I’m in a zone 4. My phlox was always getting powdery mildew. One year before it blossomed, it looked awful so I cut it completely back. It came back nice and flowered without the mildew so I’ve done that again this year and it’s coming back nice again.
Your garden looks like it's straight out of a storybook and I am living for it! What a labor of love. It's incredible to see how far it has come in 3 years. The effort, expense and time that both of you have invested into creating this masterpiece (especially since it's covered in snow most of the year) has been worth it and doesn't go unappreciated. This is a garden for the soul. I would expect no less from someone that is a healer.
If your birdbath is made of concrete you can simply turn the "bowl" over on the pedestal for the winter and because it is not holding the water/ice it does not crack. Also it looks cute with snow piled on top of it: sort of like a giant mushroom!
Regarding your birdbath, I bought a metal birdbath and modified it to be a fountain. I have a water basin in the ground that can store a few gallons of water and a solar powered pump that produces a tiny stream over a ball (small round vase) that trickles down into a dinner plate. The runoff flows under the plate and down the birdbath stem and is filtered and then recycled. I think the system keeps the birdbath and water cool on hot days. It might not be perfect if you are extremely picky about the materials such as the use of a PVC basin, but the birds seem to love the bath. You would just need to store a few of the componants during the winter. The metal birdbath that I bought was not very expensive and has some metal birds, so I think it is attractive even in the winter. I can send you a video and more info if you would like.
Every time I see a tree come down, it gives me anxiety. Love the whites, grays , pinks, purples and blues, and touches of chartreuse. This is the most calming , serene color palette to me. Someone said this garden looks like a fairy tale and is a garden for the soul I could not put it any better. Its a dreamy, magical secret garden to get lost in. What an amazing accomplishment in such a short span. This is joy!
I feel the same about trees. But unfortunately we've had many arborists and many tree specialists come out to our property and we had to lose some for safety reasons.
Yeah I'm going to have a 30 gardens at memorial Park in New Kensington PA and at the park and that they're just beautiful but I love your garden it's so pretty so I love watching all these different shows that really I really learned a lot from them have a good day thank you bye😊
Wow your garden has come so far since 2020! It gives me hope for my yard. I just read if you put a couple of pennies in a bird bath it keeps the algae from forming...I'll have to research this more to see if thats safe and/or works.
So beautiful! You probably already know this, but for anyone in the comments who might not, the reason why her plants grew so vigorously despite heavy pruning is actually BECAUSE of heavy pruning. The plant will perceive it as a threat and will put on much more growth as a result! It thinks it's needing to hurry up and grow faster because it is being "eaten" in its consciousness of losing a lot of branches, and is trying to counteract that for survival. Heavy pruning always stimulates a plant to grow almost aggressively.
Absolutely Beautiful job Anna. You and your partner and Georgie must be so happy there. Thanks for being so open and explaining about how multiple gardens and spaces and property becomes lovely after much hard labor of love and fun and trust. My parents have as beautiful a garden. It is also their labor of love and they are so talented too.
Just loved this Anna! Your garden belongs in a magazine. So much hard work-just lovely. I'm always amazed how you can remember the name of every plant. I was wondering how your Hollyhocks were coming along. Did you plant them from seed yourself, and if so, when do you start? Mine are huge, but no flowers this year. Do I cut them back in the Spring? Thank you!
Greetings Anna from Sunny Cornwall! Now into August everything is in full bloom and looking great! Think our summer is similar to yours but or winters are wet and windy. Your cottage garden is marvellous. Loving your posts beautifully relaxed! Good luck and happy gardening!
Reiki hipped me up to you Anna, having seen this and knowing your about good energy has me absolutely certain you’re a garden fairy!!! I don’t have any land as of yet, the one time I got to get my therapy on yard style condo politics created nothing but static!!! Fortunately I now know I can chill therapeutically as you do you here!!! I’ve heard or done a little research about milk being both a fertilizer and pesticide (good or bad milk one part milk to four or five parts water if not more, can’t remember offhand. Calcium and silica (diatomaceous earth) help with plant structure and may deter infestation because of structural strength). Not sure if that would help but that’s what came to mind, I hope it does or at least helps find a solution. Keep shining!!!
Hey there Anna I cant see if anyones commented on the bugs here yet. Essentially they are a pest to your garden. They are called 4-line plant bugs. You are right the damage to your plants is caused by these guys. Its actually the nymphs that do the most damage, but the adult you show here also does some damage. The naughty guys have huge appetites. They don't just do cosmetic damage but can also eat whole leaves and kill plants. You should find where they gather, they feed on over 215 plants, love herbs and shrubs mostly. For treatment, prune all damaged areas to get rid of eggs, stopping the spread. Then after that use a insecticide like Supreme I/T, or if you are against insecticides use a diluted apple-cider vinegar spray ( this wont help long term prevention). Hope this helps getting rid of these little critters. Early fall is a great time to use the Supreme I/T (use with water always) much love- Abbey from New Zealand
