  • Today I take you with me as I explore Webster, NH. A beautiful area filled with Farms, Rocky Rivers and Streams and of course Old New England Churches. I also find Tasha Tudor's Farm where she also had her little Store "Ginger Pickles" and lived there until she was 60 years old.

    I grew up with Tasha Tudor. Her books and artwork were part of every season and holiday. My mother adored her, and I gave to the museum in her name.

    Tasha loved poppies, she used to sell the seeds from her Corgie Cottage business. I have almost all her books & was so happy to get her phone number from her daughter and she answered the phone! We had a conversersation I will never forget. She interspersed her conversation with quotes from Shakespeare & Thackery. Ill never forget her voice...I knew Id spoken with a kindred spirit! We spoke of our corgies & books, but not for long, I suppose she was being her polite sellf.Thank you for allowing us to see the "red house"! It was in her book, but only a picture.. New Englands great, especially for an Iowa, New England "wannabe".

    I met Tasha Tudor in the 90's. I was a dealer doing a show in Nashville TN. and she was there shopping. She came up to ME. I knew who she was but I would never let on because I think people like to have their privacy. I was wearing a caped Outback coat and hat. She touched my arm and I still remember every exact word she said to me: "You are a beautiful woman and I love your coat and hat". I then said "Thank you, Miss Tudor". With that she smiled and left my booth. She was of course dressed in one of her mid 1800's outfits. From the midwest, I now live in a little 250 year old cape in New Hampshire and have my business on our website, the country lady antiques. Her family contacted us several years ago and asked my husband and me to present a program at their center in Vermont. We did go, and did our 'Dressing a Colonial Lady' presentation there. It was a hit. It was covered by a local newspaper and I still have the clipping of us. It's a very nice memory.

    Hello Carla, Enjoyed today's video ( so special) with the peaceful running water and calming music. When I hear church bells 🔔 ( as we did in today's video) I always think of angels communicating to me/ us. My favorite ( besides growing up in a gardening family) Tasha Tudor was a special person. I have for many years note cards I purchased while she was living. I receive Email communications of events and recently they had seed packets that a person could buy.
    I enjoyed seeing all your purchased plants, 👍 also thank you for sharing your garden with many beautiful blooms and patriotic hanging basket 🇺🇸 ❤ 🤍💙

Those church bells. right on cue, with the blue sky and billowy white clouds over the steeple! God is good! You are so right , that most of us think of Tasha Tudor at Corgi Cottage in Vermont. I think its because all of the books I have are in that setting. I have THe Garden book, THe Christmas book , and her Dollhouse book. You did such a beautiful job of filming and music choices. I notice your skills are really, really good at filming. I always feel like I am there. Salvia, pansies and sweet alyssum are my go to in my garden every year. Loved that silver gray fern. Wow! That is a REALLY old way of arranging pews! I used to be a pastor of two Congregational Churches (UCC) in Vermont. That sanctuary is currently in use (I can tell by the hymnals), but this church dedicated to the historical layout of huddling together for worship as as they did in the days before sanctuaries were heated! Families used to have their own section of pews, and each section, as this church shows, had a little door. Usually the fancy, important people in the congregation were closer to the front (I roll my eyes!). You get the seat you pay for! Before 1820, there was still a “minister tax” that everybody had to pay whether you went to church or not. Also, when the lightning rod was invented in the late 18th century, church councils would have debates about about whether to install one in their steeple-because if God wanted to smite your church with lightning and burn it down, He should have the option! LOL! Another colonial church tidbit: a church member-not sure what he was called-would walk around with a long stick fitted on the end with a leather ball, and if you dozed off in the worship service, he’d gently bop you with it. The stick was long enough to reach you no matter where you were seated in the pews.

    • @mynewenglandstory
      @mynewenglandstory  2 місяці тому +1

      Thank you for the "fun facts"....love it! That seating is pretty common in the old Churches here, some even have the family name on them. I have been to a Service where they still use a Pump Organ....one Man pumps while the other plays. That is part of the New England Charm that I love. Thanks for sharing and have a great week!

      I grew up near her a good portion of my life. Her daughter Beth was the one who collected the rent. Tasha was just another eccentric in the area. VT has always been full of artist, off grid homesteaders etc. It wasn't uncommon even today to have a neighbor who wore ripped jeans (way before it was a fashion statement) did all their own upkeep for their home and property, drove a beat up Volvo and turns out to be a millionaire. Nothing pretentious or trying to keep up with the neighbors. After Tasha died there was a huge battle around the estate and I'll leave it at that for legal reasons. I will say this though, they were all kind and liked by the community. Families are complicated and even now in my own retirement years I have siblings that make me crazy.
