Mr. (Ford)Rallycross changes makes to the Dark Side after what, Twenty years running Ford brand? And nothing here in the comments? Nothing to see here I guess.
It was not Martins choice at all. Ford dropped support for all racing except WRC and Formula 1 from 1999 onward. Ford Motorsport got a new boss who told Martin he was a "has been" and they wouldn't sponsor him from now on. Same with other drivers. Ludvig Hunsbedt lost Ford support and planned to build a Toyota Corolla, but the parts were so expensive that the sponsorship would do a difference. So he and other stuck with Fords, as they were well proven and parts were easy to get. But I get your point. I was very bitter at Martin for joining the dark side. Untill I learned why.
@TufteMotorsport as I've learned since. Ford's new boss lost them the system that he had helped develope that revolutionized 4-wheel drive rally and rallyx. They would've had rallycross wrapped up for a decade or more. Opel ended up with it and thankfully shared it with the other racers I believe.
@@Malibu1515 That system was developed in 1983. Martin got fired late 1998. Martin and Mike Endean tried to sell it to different WRC teams but none wanted to buy it, until Opel did. Then Opel asked Xtrac to cut out Martin, as he was a Ford man. But their Opel project never amounted to anything. Meanwhile the system was used on Fords and Vauxhalls in rallycross, and later Audis and more. The system Martin used when he left Ford for Opel was a copy of the system Xtrac and Opel developed for DTM. So he never took the patent with him. It was already something Opel had done.
