My father grew up with Martin. I remember visiting him at his home in the early 90's, he was turning new driveshafts out of Titanium at the time. I remember him having to save the shavings for recycling due to the high price of the material. He talked about having a pressure accumulator feeding oil to the turbo after the engine shut down, to prevent bearing damage... He also showed us the tour buss he had, a converted buss/coach, with a built in car-lift and workshop... I'd presume he was driving for Opel at the time. Beyond being MR Ralllycross, he is also a really good engineer, inventing/innovating, and working on 4x4 and drive-train stuff.. There are legendary stories about him driving the milk truck like an absolute loon in the area where he grew up. He comes across as a great guy, who tells it like it is. I also remember watching the little mermaid cartoon with his daughter at the time. Happy times.
After Martin Schanche stopped as an active competition driver around 2001-2002, he started full time as an 1 man company into building and modifiying engines and gearboxes for other competition drivers. He still loves to spend some time in his workshop, at first floor of his private home in the Oslo region, where he lives with his wife, at the age of 78 as of 2023. He is a bit more laidback these days compared to his race track years) He sometimes shows up in some comercials for local companies.
I can vividly remember being at Brands Hatch with my Dad in the early 80's & seeing for the first time Martin's Gartrac Mk3 Xtrac Escort. Very happy times from a legendary motorsport period...Unfortunately Ford Motorsport were too slow & backward to take hold of the innovation & subsequently waisted millions on their RS200 project. Which ironically ended up used in Rallycross. Every other manufacturer used a complete road car basis for their Rally Group B development programme, the same path Martin took in developing his 4wd Escort, but a few years earlier & always ahead of the game, Great vision.
You can see how these cars are a step closer to the modern cars, more balanced in corners, sequential box, rule maker meddling, similar designs, slightly less ragged and taking similar lines. 70s, 80s, 90s were the heyday both in crazy engineering and wild racing.
Atleast there was always action and drama when Schanche was involved, whether he won or lost. I think that was the attraction, the guy and his cars were explosive.
Mr.Rallycross, himself!!! 😀 It's always cool to see him give those Fords,he hawe owned over the years.. A REAL beating!! The other drivers, that was in the way, to) 😜 He realy could drive his cars, but he shorly could work on them as well!! Rallycross, will newer be the same after he,and the other legends left the show!!! But thank the higher powers,4 the Re-runs! 👍👌
A few weeks ago, on Estering in Germany, this original Escort was driven, only as showact, a few rounds by a privat driver. It reminds me of the glory days. Very nice.
Schanche was fiercely hated by Finnish rallycross fans back in the 80's, because of his wild antics on track and his bitter rivalry with Alamäki. He seemed like such a dirty player and sore loser back then, but it's nice to see he has a lot of self-irony and a sense of humor too. Maybe it's just that he put his heart into it, and I think that it's that kind of spirit we need more of in today's motorsport.
I heard some stories about Schanche, that he was chasing Alamäki in the pits with a spanner, when he lost to Alamäki. Schanche is one of the greatest racing drivers of all time, but he has a very unique personality, and a short temper. And no wonder that he was hated in Finland, he was very tough and short tempered rival, who did some questionable things indeed.
I asked Martin about that car and he told me he had tried a total of 27 different turbo set-ups to find the combination of hot/cold sides which worked the best when the upcoming restrictor was installed in the intake, he very wryly told me that what he had settled on effectively lost him about 100bhp BUT gained him very nearly an extra 100lbs/ft of torque... The FIA also introduced higher minimum car weights for cars running 2.0 engines, so very cleverly with the new car Martin went on a fanatical weight reduction program for every single aspect of the car and managed to bring the new car in 130kg below the minimum weight which meant lead ballast would then have to be added but again, this is where his very clever almost unique understanding of car-set up came to the fore, yes the lead ballast was added but it all went very low down and very close to the ideal location to minimise the effect on the centre of gravity and yaw axis of the car as well and optimising the traction from the tyres. The guy is a genius, some might day 'flawed genius' but nobody bettered his car engineering skills. The transmission which he designed and had made from helicopter grade magnesium castings was an incredibly successful and awesome bit of design and engineering. I could pick up the raw full casing on my little finger
what about this weight penalty anyway? class rules at max weight, engine displacement, N/A or Turbocharged wheelbase maybe. So what all this weight nonsens? Let the best be the best at a given car spec. ??
Martins english was very good. Unlike petter solberg “its not the fart that kills, its the smell”. I cant believe he said that on international tv. What he ment to say was “its not the speed that kills, its when you crash”.
ridiculous all those weight penalties. I watched Martin in this car at Valkenswaard in the Netherlands. As if no weight was added. But still, all those limitations and regulations, gettn sick of that. Lets go for it, the fastest the best engineered the best driver wins. If you cant cope with it, stay home or seek other lower division of racing.
1993-95 I guess? If so, then that’s not the F1RX. That’s the RS2000 T16 X-Trac, that he won with in 1995. It was later bought and used by Ludvig Hunsbedt in 1996-1999. The F1RX was built for 1996
@@nick-andre08 i dont know for sure, however it was a limegreen yellow Escort mk 5 or 6 type as i remember the one like in the video, you could be right about it, somewhere mid 1990, i was at Valkenswaard in The Netherlands.
Schanche was a real bad ass, i rember once he was stepped out of his car and walked on the circuit. Because he was pushed, real loser, Will Gollop is and was so much better
Actually Will Gollop is a sore looser and a horrible bloke. He once said at Brands Hatch " I'm never coming back here" but he did. " Mr Rallycross is a much nicer and more popular driver and person.

Great driving battle between Gollop and Schanche in the A final.

It is 15min away from me in norway
Rallycross is not the same after Schanche retiered. He was and will allways be mr rallycross
Anders Eliassen He was a gentleman, I wouldn't have been such a gentleman with all that lead onboard, every one had 100 bhp over him!
Bobby Thompson it was only Dermot who had the the 100 horsepower over him as he wasn’t running European restrictor as he was doing British rounds only
Correct both Martin and Will were running ERC spec just Martin and the new car concept needing tweaking Will was the gauge for Martin

maybe so, but he was one of a kind. Indeed, he put his heart into it.
Mikko Kukkonen oh, he was a sore loser ;-) you should’ve seen when he tried politics, he puched a rude reporter in the face.. i love that guy xD
Schance is nr 1
Infact
He is like you guys 😆😆😆
Some norwegian rally drivers actually CAN speak proper english😉
Respect
Sjur Haugen well i am norwegian

He is intelligent. He has something to say that is worth hearing and his English is better than the English of a lot of Englishmen.
Schanche uses the undercut line brilliantly in that A final, and Gollop defends just as brilliantly
Two drivers who knew each other’s strengths and weaknesses 👌🏻
Did Schanke live in Bolton por a period?
Why the restrictor and weight penalty for Schanche. ?
Was the new regulations for the upcoming European season 😉
