8 years later and this video is still helping people! I crossed the polarity while jumping starting the engine on a car. The car starter cranked, but the car would not run for more than a second then stall. Fortunately, only one of the 10 amp fuses blew. After replacing that the car started, many dashboard lights were on for about a couple minutes, but then went off. Only the check engine light remained, but after clearing the codes, it stayed off. Thanks for the video.
Excellent information. I replaced the battery in my Mazda and the fuses blew like you described. Turns out that the black rubber cover on the end of one of the battery cables was actually the positive cable (i.e. it should have been a red cable end cover). I wired up the battery 'correctly' according to the cable end cover colour (only one cable had a cover and it was black), but it turns out that I'd inadvertently wired up the battery the wrong way round. Your video has shown me how to identify the true negative cable (i.e. the one that goes to ground), so now I can make a fix and also change the cable end covers so I don't make the same mistake again. Thank you, you've saved me a garage bill and more.
I always enjoy watching a practical mechanic doing electrical repairs, someone who understands when good enough really IS good enough, and why. The Chrysler part is called a self resetting thermal breaker, works like an old fashioned home heating thermostat, except that the current flowing through it does the heating. Often they can be reset faster by blowing high pressure air across the top of the case.
@@briansmobile1 so my son did this on my zl1. But only for a second. Melted the fuseable link on the alternator wire that went to the positive battery post. I repaired it and new battery. But only Keb fob will lock unlock. No sounds or horn and windows won't roll up and no start obviously
Great explanation!! I just wanted to know the difference between the cables for the battery in the car and why,? solved!!! No-one else on UA-cam has commented the way you have to inform and explain to those less knowledgeable than yourself. Problem is when anyone knows a fact it's automatically thought everyone else knows it as well. Thank you so much!!
My neighbor got a jump that was done backward... now her car (a KIA Forte) has dashboard lights that come on but the horn blows for as long as a battery charger is hooked up. And it won't start, either... just sits there and clicks. So, do you think there are just a few more fuses blown than the main 80amp one? Thanks for the informative video! 👍

Life saver!!! Went to camp with family in 2 vehicles and one was having problems with the battery so I took out the battery in my car 2005 Honda accord, to be able to boost the van if needed so we didn't get stranded. End of the week I put the battery in the car backwards and of course everything died. I figured out my mistake right away. But was kinda stranded out in the middle of no where. With a pair of hair tweezers I managed to twist the fuse like you said and made it home. Thank you so much!!!Luigi Ontario Canada:)
A few years ago I bought a 1986 Saab 900 for like $500 running at a car show, got it home and was working on it... didn't notice that it didn't have stock battery cables (both black) and I had set the battery in the tray wrong, so I touched the terminals backwards. WOW! Fireworks! Amazingly enough the only thing it fried was the oil pressure switch... it basically welded together the thin metal sheets that make contact when there's oil pressure inside the switch. NEAT.
Ha! I bought a reverse terminal (R) battery by mistake and hooked it up and when I saw a spark I quickly disconnected it. The fuse did not blow and the battery did not bubble over. I flipped the battery around and MADE the cables reach. It works great. My 2001 CR-V also has these fuses which I didn't know about until now. Thanks.
Thank you 🙏 so much 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 I just got my license after 25 years and everything ready just needed a battery and I put it on backwards SMH I thought it was shot and almost had it scrapped! But the 80 fuse that says alternator under the hood and in same black box next to battery and sure enough it's blown! All I need to do is replace the 80 amp fuse? Somebody said I could have burnt my alternator out but I didn't hear anything about the starter going out on you for the EXACT same thing I done. Thank you I'll go Monday morning and get the 80 amp fuse and I will message your video back! Thank you for sharing your knowledge on this holiday weekend I'm very grateful you and your family have a wonderful New Year! John
Yeah I just put my brand new battery in backwards, and when I realized my mistake I felt like such an absolute idiot. Thing is, I actually had to hammer BOTH terminals on, so thats what got me even more messed up. Now begins the process of identifying the fuse, because guess what, no fuse box cover or manual left in this oldy.
Good info, thanks. Tried to jump start a Toyota Previa van and accidentally reversed jumper cables (yep, didn't pay attention, grrr). On the running vehicle the battery positive is closer to the firewall, on the Toyota ir's closer to the grill. I stupidly assumed the setup was the same. Obviously the Toyota wouldn't start, blew a fuse. I replaced the fuse, also the battery and connected it properly. The result: The starter cranked repeatedly, but nothing fired up the engine. Dad hooked up the jumper cables backwards on my car and I’m hoping this is all I gotta fix ah I only asked him to make sure they don’t touch but he went ahead and “helped” by connecting em
Did you end up able to salvage the car or was it totalled. I had a guy help me with a dead battery the other day. Everything went to hell fast. Burned out a wiring harness, abs sensor and who knows what else. I need to either scrap it or start working on it.
Great video - 2004 Expedition - Family member reversed the cables on a jump start and the radio and cigarette lighters don't work in front, she switched a fuse and now the A/C doesn't work. Any thoughts?
Great video! Found a 2011 Nissan Leaf, the owner says this occurred. Do you think this type of fix would put the car back in service? It’s a few hours out of town, I have a 2015 I can look at for reference though a 2011 might be a little different.
Brian thanks again for another very enjoyable video, in this clear something up that I had a problem with in the past about two years ago now I went to buy a 09 Smart car the salesman hooked the battery up backwards and totally smoked the battery cables going to the other car, I told him to call me, after he got the car repaired! Because once they jumped at the correct direction it wouldn't start! Subsequently they sold that car to someone else and I bought a different one! Fearing the car may have been damaged, in the battery jump attempt! So if that ever happens in the future I will know what to look for. Thanks again for all the great information you've given me over the last couple of years!
Edgar, you're welcome and you're awesome buddy! I love hearing that you're learning/applying/internalizing and appreciating. That kind of path with bless your life and everyone around you as you share and apply it!
You seem pretty smart. Smarter than the last 3 shops that looked at my electrical issue. Maybe you can help me on this? So.. sometimes when I start my car the gas gauge and temp gauge will drop all the way down, the power windows will not work, and the blower fan for the heat/AC will not work. One mechanic said it was a loose positive connection to the battery and a wrong terminal end was installed. I had him fix it and I’m still having the same electrical issues. Not sure if this means anything but it seems to happen more often after it has rained. If you or anyone has any solutions I’d greatly appreciate it.
THANKS BUNCHES !! Exactly why , when I reconnected my battery, ( forgetting I had to turn it around for the positive cable to reach..since I waited a day or so before reconnecting).. and it popped then had smoke coming from the negative ( more like from the truck ,than the battery.) I quickly the negative cable and it stopped smoking ( like something burning). What could it be? I got the battery off (again) and put on charger and still shows good..My vehicle is a 93 Ford F 150 ...also, do you have a video on what to do when the positive cable is too short to reach over to the positive of battery?? Thanks again!! ( ALSO, how do you crimp positive wires to fit into a new terminal..(namely the older vehicles that have 2 copper looking wires..I'm having trouble getting these into the new terminal..and they are corroded with acid ( just purchased the truck that way and battery was inserted at a 'lean'..and broken terminal I did not notice..now I know why the battery was leaning..cable won;t fit as it should. ....) Again, Thanks BUNCHES!!!!
Brian, I've recently heard of something called "paintless dent removal" do you know anything about that? Probably, well worth a video if you do. BFATE great maybe you should transition to an ultralight and extend your horizons again. Always supplying good quality production values. Thanks.
Thanks bro! The same thing happened to my car when my uncle was trying to switch out batteries from his vehicle to mines that's not the same make! I didn't know what had happened!

Great Stuff Brian!! I was just wondering...as I do the same thing here with my Nissan - why is the Height and Box Size Critical? I can understand why Height and box - needs to FIT in the space,. but for that matter...why can't you just use a Straight 100A without any Box at all? Anyway...please comment on Box size...and is there any critical needs to match it, other than just being sure it fits in allowable space! THANKS again!
Good video. Not sure it will help me though. Same issue on a 94 chevy corsica, but everything still works like windows and such but I have no spark now. Will still look at the fuse box anyways.
Thanks Brian. I have a 2000 Lexus lx470, reverse jumper cables. I don't have home yet, I'm buying it for $700, 278,000, these are supposed to run for ever. Any thoughts on this one?
It's called a bi-metallic strip, two different metal strips attached together that expand from heat at different rates, makes it bend and break the circuit, when it cools down it straightens out again and reconnects the circuit
Thanks for sharing this information. But I am still confused if hooking up a reversed battery will damage the alternators!!! And are modern cars are made by taking this mistake into consideration and are provided with safety measures to not let alternator fry (e.g. safety protection fuses that blow first and protect other electrical parts) >>>>> I'd appreciate if you could reply. Advance Auto Parts just installed my new battery i bought from them and messed my car up. They had it towed ti Honda. The battery fuse was blown. My question is what about other damage like electrical damage or computer damage. Will Honda check for all of this?
I wish this solved my problem. I was stuck in the heat waiting for a tow in my 04 Pilot and a good Samaritan stopped and offered to jump me. I hooked my my side correctly and glance at his hook up but didn't double check. He jumped me with wires crossed. This burned my wiring harness, an ABS sensor and nothing turns on. Thankfully the battery didn't blow up on us but I'm VERY close to scrapping the Pilot. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have no problem pulling the old harness and sensor but no idea if he burned out my PCM, VTM-4 module or anything else. I don't see any blown fuses. I really prayed this would be my saving grace because I can't afford another vehicle. Thanks in advanced
Thanks Andy- Thought of you yesterday. The airport was pretty busy with Air Force Civil Air Patrol Cadets. I think they did almost 40 flights in one day. I had no idea we had that kind of thing going here. I'm pretty jealous!
Who would have thought the fix would be so easy. Part of my GMC SPRINT restoration was an entire Painless kit. Getting rid of a hidden fuse-able line was a plus. They neglected placing a few relays and circuit breakers which I've added on my own. The starter circuit for instance.
Pin 85 & 86 I believe. Wrote a whole treatise to you re this relay then hit the wrong button and gone forever... So. A friend gave me the April Hot Rod and an article there described the solution to my hot start issues. A penny across those 2 pins will fire it up with out any sparks whatsoever. Seems the OE ignition switch can't deal with hot start amperage draw. Problem solved, (also for fuel pump wire (16 or 18 gauge) to the back of the car and the coming electric fan as well. Not sure what Painless was thinking but no matter. Jim
daughter left lights on and drained battery, purchased a new battery at autozone and husband installed it backwards creating some sort of short. All we know is the dashboard turned on like christmas lights! every light starting flashing. So now the car won't even start. I came across your video but not sure if this would be a fix for a VW Jetta 2014. Any advice would be greatly appreciated
I installed a reverse battery incorrectly in my John deere zero turn lawn mower and lost all power after that. Mower repair place is saying that I have a bad regulator. Are the two issues connected?
Dear Sir Thank you for your very helpful video. Recently , while I was installing a new battery, I made the mistake of placing the new battery backwards so that the polarity was reversed. Since then I have replaced the main fuse such as you did in your video, but not by making it myself as you do, but by purchasing a new one. The engine turns over but will not engage. A few days ago I bought a new battery and I am very concerned that I get the new battery installed safely and correctly. Could you please remind me: does the the positive connection always fit toward the windshield and does the negative always go toward the headlights? You go over this in your video but I still want to be very certain. How many visible wires does the positive ground have, and how many visible wires does the negative cable contain? What are their colors on the positive pole? How many does the negative contain, and what are their colors? It appears to me that the positive cable (the one that goes toward the windshield contains more wires that the negative, because there are some small white wires on the positive cable that are not present on the negative cable. Is that correct? (The car's make is a 1995 Isuzu Trooper). Naturally I am desperate not to make such a mistake again. If you have a moment could you write to confirm or correct me? Thank you. Sincerely yours, Will Morgan (North Carolina) willwmorgan@gmail.com
I do have a question. Mine starts still but it doesn't want to. So what's that mean? Cause I hooked it up backwards heard a bubble but didn't mess the battery up
doing a jump start once, other guy hooked up the cables backwards ( - and + ) and made a nice spark shower, knew he messed up when the battery started smoking. both cars were alright though, guess i unhooked em fast enough
Question. My car died about day after I jumped someone. It was cold and the cold insisted on doing the hook up himself. The follow morning I noticed of horsepower and the night after that on the way home I took it up to 85-89mph and it gave up just gave up on me. If the guy hooked my car up wrong; would my car die instantly or would it do as I just explained?

Thanks for sharing this information
those self repairing fuses are like polyfuses but i've never heard of one that can handle many amps like that! those must of been ENORMOUS fuses!
love seeing people have fun flying. Good one!
Thanks Andy- Thought of you yesterday. The airport was pretty busy with Air Force Civil Air Patrol Cadets. I think they did almost 40 flights in one day. I had no idea we had that kind of thing going here. I'm pretty jealous!
yea cadet groups tend to pack the flights in, pretty awesome stuff!
I hooked up my battery backwards on my 2000 celica gts.. So far seeing a blown 120a main fuse / alternator fuse. Could this cause a no start?
Yep same shit with me that main fuse will keep it from even lighting up alot of the times
Yea so I already fixed mine. I had a no start, no dash lights at alll nothing, no radio. New 120a alternator fuse and I was good.
Who would have thought the fix would be so easy.
Part of my GMC SPRINT restoration was an entire Painless kit. Getting rid of a hidden fuse-able line was a plus. They neglected placing a few relays and circuit breakers which I've added on my own. The starter circuit for instance.
You're a smart man!
Jim
Thanks buddy, got it fixed though my car radio no longer works after this
So I did this on my Lexus is300 and I tried starting it backwards. What more extensive work do I have to do?
Your videos are very interesting you are a very cleaver knowledgeanle person
Good video, this just happened to me at work.
So easy! Saved me on paying someone else to do it 😩😭😭😭😍
thanks so much dude! i can actually lock my car now xD
daughter left lights on and drained battery, purchased a new battery at autozone and husband installed it backwards creating some sort of short.
You saved my life! Thank you 🙏
Thanks for saving my cars life!! 👍👍😂
Dear Sir
Thank you for your very helpful video.
Thank you.
Sincerely yours,
Will Morgan (North Carolina)

Your positive cables will always be red and the ground will be black.
Brian that looks like a blast.
It worked! Thank you very much!
Very helpful ! Thank you so much !
Dude, that was awesome
Thank you
I do have a question.
So it would be the main fuse 80 amps generally?
THANKS FOR SHARING..
Thank you sir!
God bless you sir I'm so grateful I found this video str8 love brother 🙌🏾🙌🏾💯
Thanks a lot much appreciated 👍🏻
the scenery is beautiful. What is the motor powered parachute called? it's not considered an ultralite is it?
It's called Powered Paragliding. The motor is called a paramotor. It falls under the FAR 103 regulations/restrictions.
Thanks homie. just what i needed.
What kind of paraglide setups are you guys running? That looked like an awesome time!
I'm on a Dominator 21.3 sq. meter, he's on a 26 sq. meter Roadster II. It's a riot!
