    Thank you!! exactly what I needed to know, including confirming that external hubs cost less than internals. I'll nee four for my Sinology Disc Station. Costco has these for $169, but I didn't want to tear one apart to find it wouldn't work.

      Depends on the place now for the coatings. I've been using Zenni for glasses and they have not chipped on any of my family's lenses.

    Thanks for the vid. I just ripped a new one apart for the drive and they now contain a ST8000DM004 Barracuda (which makes me very happy). Similar process but the chassis is slightly different. I had to pull both top and bottom off then the drive and card are fully accessible. No screws bc they're using the sides to hold it in place. ** Wear eye protection **. A plastic piece shot me right in the eye taking the bottom off.

      Also, he's totally right the USB is crap. Was getting ~20MB before now getting ~100MB over SATA II (older server) and LAN.

    • @jamisonw.327
      @jamisonw.327 3 роки тому

      Are you sure your "older server" has USB 3.0? because that's what you need to get full speed out of the USB interface. Also you need to be sure you enable write caching which is enabled by default for internal drives but not external.

    What I don't understand is why is the 8TB + case cheaper than the 8TB alone?

    • @Norphax
      @Norphax 7 років тому +4

      that drive would be lower quality with a lower lifespan

    • @siliconaudio
      @siliconaudio 7 років тому +14

      It's because SMR drives are cheap, but are designed for archival, not really mainstream read/write intensive work. So, you'd never want to use one for an OS or a database, but they are fine for storage.

    • @mattatwork2904
      @mattatwork2904 6 років тому +4

      It's still cheaper, you can see that's an "Archive" drive, and around here it's 50% more to buy the archive drive without the enclosure.

      seagate's new hdd line archive with green sticker. Amazon has them for $149 and Microcenter with price match refunded me the difference ($30). I also bought another Seagate External 8TB for $143 from Amazon. I will crack open that one as well as soon as it arrives.

      ok. please let us know. I just picked up 2 of them from Frys for $128 + tax.. then I saw I could get one from Staples for $124.99 + tax. I ordered one from Staples as well. Will return one of them to Frys. I've read on various forums that some have opened up to find Barracuda drives. Maybe you'll get lucky with the Amazon's one. What is the manufacturing date on your model? The 2 I got from Frys was made 10/2017.. not bad. pretty new.. made in Thailand.

    I'm looking at getting one of these for my ps4 for media storage as a replacement for an older 5tb seagate drive. I know that this one will not work with the ps4 due to the hub aspect of the control board though. My question is will this drive itself work with the non-hub sata-usb control board from my old 5tb drive?

    Mine just stopped receiving any power all of a sudden. No sign of life at all when plugged to the powersource, but the hdd itself was working perfect up to that point... I wonder what could be the case? Ac adapter busted? Something else? If I strip it out to be used as an internal drive, I wonder if it will work... Thanks for the video

    Mine has a seagate Barracuda built inside of mine and not an Archive drive. I am also from Canada and needed to rip out the drive because ps4 doesn't allow built in charging hubs on externals. So I bought an enclosure and tore my 8tb apart and out came a barracuda drive instead of an archive. I felt spoiled as I payed 180 Canadian with the tax included for boxing day from best buy

    Just so everyone is aware before they go tearing their Seagate external apart looking for performance boosts... The reason he was getting 30mb/s was almost guaranteed to be because he never enabled write-caching in the settings. I have the 10TB variant and it gets 250mb/s (it's also a little faster than the 8 though). Before enabling write cache which is disabled by default for file integrity it got about 30mb/s.
    The reason why it started going faster for him is because internal drives enable it by default and USB interfaced drives don't.
    The other possibility is that he plugged it into a USB 2.0 slot, which maxes out around 31mb/s. Either way that's not the drive's fault, it's user error.

    Hey Peter, let's say I already started using this 8TB Ext HD by archiving some files with its USB cable. Can I still access these archived files when I tear them apart like shown on video and hook up as internal HDD to my desktop ? I'm just not sure if that control board will encrypt the content and if the control board fails, the data will not be accessible? thanks!

    • @LindaSunshine
      @LindaSunshine 7 років тому +2

      That's great, that means if that controller broke up you can take HDD out and it will read data without any problems. No encryption

    • @zhv3062
      @zhv3062 7 років тому

      exactly thats usually the MAIN issue when some people claim their PCs cant see or read from the drive anymore, they waste time and RMA it back, Lose ALL data and get a "refurb" drive back.
      When you can just follow this vid, pop the physical HDD out, stick it into your PC (SATA or Enclosure) in 9 times out of 10, it works again.

    • @anthonygreene8759
      @anthonygreene8759 7 років тому +1

      YES - If all that fails is the "sata-usb bridge board" inside the enclosure all you need to do to access your data is remove drive from enclosure and put the drive in a docking station.
      The "sata-usb bridge board" failed earlier today but I now have access to all my data on the 8tb drive via my usb 3.0 docking station!

    Hi.
    If I buy one of these, can I use the HDD in a NAS synology ?

    • @siliconaudio
      @siliconaudio 7 років тому

      These drives are what Seagate call their "Archive" drives. They use SMR (shingled magnetic recording) technology which can suffer from slow sequential writes. They do have around 20 GB of on-platter cache which can make smaller writes quite fast, but sustained writes will slow down significantly. Read speed is good though. I'm not sure if SMR disks are supported by many NAS makers yet - it would pay to get confirmation from Synology tech support before laying down your cash.

      If your drive is now and having issues after plugging it in, just replace it at the store. You may have a defective unit. Always check to make sure everything works before doing this. Also, know that taking this apart voids your warranty as well.

    • @Ashtree81
      @Ashtree81 6 років тому

      I think its 5980 rpm, read some in depth article somwhere, but since its higher density with SMR tech, the speed matches that of 7200 rpm PMR drives. But hesitant about SMR tech myself.

  • @BB-Rareburto
    @BB-Rareburto 6 років тому

    I think it is cheaper in a USB case, and is called "archive" because it is intended, and built for, very light use. You said its USB transfers data very very slow compared to your direct SATA. This may be intentional so it gets little use up to the end of the warranty. I assume if it was used like a normal, non-archive hard drive it would tend to fail much quicker. If it fails at 1 year, and you can not restore it perfectly back in the case (no broken tabs), then your warranty is void. Seagate wins, you lose.
    We need to think about the hassle cost on these cheap drives, including data loss hassle. It is also time consuming to deal with a failed drive.

    • @sethh8892
      @sethh8892 5 років тому

      Also, the warranty wouldn't be void if you bought it from Walmart or something like that. They wouldn't know the difference between the broken tabs, or normal tabs. They wouldn't know or care. Not to mention the fact that we have super glue for a reason. If anything goes wrong, which it wouldn't, a little bit of creativity can always help. And no they do not intentionally make USB transfer data slower than sata. Sata just transfers data faster, and that's the reason we use it to transfer data... obviously.

    I think it would really be a good idea to list the "Seagate" Drive Part Number you find in the box, Names don't really help as Seagate has a whole bunch of drives listed as archive .. .It would also be the only way you can compare the real price of the same drive. I will be receiving my 8tb Monday... does anyone know if you can look under properties in windows and see the exact part number of the drive before taking it apart I am actually looking for drives for a NAS and I think those drives are completely different specs than Archive or the Barracuda line. But, with out the Part listed on the drive it's self it is impossible to really compare prices!

      even though it might be too late now:
      this drive is not well suited as internal drive. its smr which means its only good for doing straight back ups not copying small files since the datatracks overlapp to a certain extent and the speed will drop drastically when you're doing random writes especially on a full drive.
      if you want a better drive just take the barracuda. its sold at the same price as the archive drive but its much better suited for everything but backups (where its even)
