  • In this video, I show you how to shuck the internal SATA HDD from an external Seagate Backup Plus Hub drive (not to be confused with a regular Backup Plus). This particular drive is 5TB, but these instructions apply to other sizes of the Backup Plus Hub.

    Great tutorial but i'd urge anyone attempting this not to use a knife of any kind! Get a set of cheap car trim removal tools or a mobile phone case opener tool both of which are made of hard plastic and are much safer to use and you also won't damage the case if you want to reuse it. Remember, these enclosures are designed not to be opened so you're going to need a bit of brute force. Using some trim removal tools i found it easier to prise open where there is a gap inside towards each end of the flat cover. I only broke 1 clip so that was pretty good going i think. I opened up 2 x 8TB enclosures and found some very nice Seagate Barracuda Computes in mine. They cost me £105 each in Amazon's sale. The price of these naked drives was £179 so i save a load of money shucking them! Just take your time and be careful. If you don't break the clips you can of course reuse these enclosures with other drives so it's a great way of saving money!

      Like you said, you would need to run the power cord out of the case, which would be a bit awkward. USB can be internal if you have a PCIe USB card. I have one of this kind 8TB hd. It was working well till recently. And then suddenly the computer doesn't recognize it anymore, we've tried it on several computers with the same result. But the light on the case turns on. We've checked adapter & the usb cable & they seem to be working fine with other hard drives.
    I was wondering, if I remove the hard drive from the case as you did & connect to another older case from a 2TB Seagate, is there a chance that this will work?

    • @accessrandom
      @accessrandom  3 роки тому

      Yes, it should work unless there is a problem with the disk itself. There is no hardware encryption so if you plug it in as an internal disk to a Windows PC, it should be able to read the data (unless, again, the disk itself has gone bad).

    What does it mean at the end when he says this is a SMR drive and comments on the life of the unit? I believe these HD units come with 3 years warranty so how long would one expect these units to last as the main purpose of purchasing one is long term back up of important information.

    • @accessrandom
      @accessrandom  4 роки тому

      I can only speak from experience, but I've had to RMA two SMR Seagates within the warranty period, while my non-SMR drives have been going strong for over four years. Please note that all of them have been in use 24/7 so if you're just using it as a backup drive that you store offline, it should last much longer.

    • @deraid712
      @deraid712 2 роки тому +1

      Only CMR drives are good ones, its an old technology method how drives write data on them. SMR is built to cheat consumers, since they up the volume by too much from less. Lets say 2tb increased in size up to 8tp without loss of cost to manufacture, its kind of like old compression method in windows xp was, but you have true 8tb, the only problem, its good only for Read, and will die on many Writes.
      So if you want good drive take CMR it will last for long time, while SMR is good as SD Card, if you Write data to it few times and then use it for Read only its good (Backup) if you want to use it for video editing or constantly erasing and rewriting data, for NAS etc, its no go.

    NEVER use a metal screwdriver to pry open a plastic case. Spend a few $ & buy a non-metal/anti-magnetic case spudger-pry tool. All the 'usual suspects' sell them. btw, if you warm up the housing with a hair dryer on low heat for a few minutes from 12" away the case is much easier to shuck and won't be damaged.
    Biggest issue with the BPH series is ventilation. Placing the drive flat improves air flow and is better for the HDD.

    Hello ! Is this HDD run at 5400RPM or 7200RPM ? I have a Seagate Game Drive HUB 8TO for Xbox One I buy recently (thanks Black Friday !) and I'm very surprise how it is fast compare to a HDD 1 or 2TO in 2"5 ! Have you an idea why it is better ? Thanks.

      Congrats on the BF drive! The one that I have is a 5400 RPM drive. It's possible that the Seagate Game Drive Hub has a faster RPM (I couldn't find the speed on their spec sheet). It could be that, even at 5400 RPM it will appear to be faster since there's so much density on each platter...

      @@accessrandom Thanks for your answer :-) I have see spec for their HDD Desktop and Barracuda HDD in 8To and they run between 5400 or 7200RPM and this two big guys have 256Mo of cache memory ... but it's clear it's more faster than 2"5 external HDD ! In Forza Horizon 4 to be in the game, it take 1minute approximatively but with Game drive Hub I think I win 15 or 20 second so it is great ! Hope you the best.

    It has been kind of bad trends starting from Apple: Product designs meant to be none user serviceable. What a shameful practice for wasting material resource.
    Upgrading the hard drive on this enclosure with USB 3.0 hub makes sense. However, the manufacturer intentionally makes it difficult to benefit sale of future bigger capacity external drive products.

    You shouldn't do this as a norm, the drive inside are the Seagate Archive HDD's and they usually sell cheaper than the boxed ones. On amazon today 240euro for the boxed and 215euro unboxed, but nice how-to vid. When the boxed ones are on sale it might be a different story however.

      i'll never get their reasoning in this, you can send me a plain cardboard box with a disk and be done with it, but then you price yourself out of the market with a product you need a fancy box and a extra casing for. All cutting into your profit margin. Still, lucky you for their screwups.

      Drives that fail QA during manufacture get recertified internally for resale and stuffed in these enclosures with shorter warranty periods, typically. That's why you see random makes/models inside from one box to another. There's nothing wrong with them, but when I buy them I run Seatools on them quarterly until my warranty is up, then I remove them from the enclosure for internal use.

      Unfortunately, the hard drive manufacturers are able to use different internal models as long as it meets the specifications on the box. With that said, there are tools like HD Sentinel and I think CrystalDiskInfo that can report on the model of the internal disk before shucking. Also, I find that Western Digital is more consistent in what internals they use for their external drives.

Despite the cable inserted, theirs or my own, the drive connects/disconnects unless the cable is very specifically held in position. Forget all that, this drive is coming out and going into a Nexstar 3.1 enclosure. Poor workmanship
