  • The Cannonball Run is a legendary coast-to-coast endurance race normally done by car. But when Justin Barnes found out there was a similar event for scooters, he couldn't wait to put the throttle down.
"I'm doing this on my own regardless. If I go into debt for 10 years, if have to quit my job, I'm riding across the country," said Barnes.
Barnes, a member of Seattle-based Soldiers of Destiny scooter club, convinced 7 other members to join him on an 3,700 mile odyssey from Florida to Washington, at the less than blazing speed of around 45 miles an hour.
"Riding lawn mowers essentially have bigger motors than these thing do," joked Barnes.
The crew spent months preparing for the trip. But what they couldn't prepare for was mother nature.
"The country gave us everything it had when it came to weather," said Barnes. "Every change in weather you're feeling on your skin as opposed to the air freshener, the air conditioning inside your car. Really, really crazy."
To help break up the arduous journey, each rider had to complete a challenge along the way. Everything from eating at every McDonald's they past, or the more daring, bikini scooter washing.
If a challenge wasn't met, the penalty was severe. Like for the two members who had the top of their heads shaved.
"The challenges I think, ended up being our favorite part of the trip because it really gave something else to think about."
When they reached the finish line in Mukilteo 11 long days later, their feeling of accomplishment was overwhelming.
"It was slow but you really get to experience the tangible beauty of America when you're that exposed and vulnerable and just out there."
There are faster ways to get across the county. But for these riders, the slow way is paved with the most memories.
"What we were able to go through together and accomplish together was staggering and I'm really proud of it."
You can watch Barnes and his friends crazy cross-county trip in the documentary Slow Ride Home which is out now on Amazon Prime Video.

This is what Generations of teenagers today need to watch. Watching these folks doing that; makes me very humbled. It is understanding that life is worth living at any simplest of simplest passions and that there is no limit (under or over) to have fun with others. Motorcyclist of the world, give these guys a salute. They deserve it. Anyone in 2 wheels at legal speeds and legal roads shall be courteous to each other. Is not the CC or CI that define us but our camaraderie.

This is the greatest thing I've ever seen in my life. As a kid who grew up in the 70's , all these movies are a part of my personality in some way, so it's easy to become emotionally invested. This looks like the adventure of a lifetime that you will NEVER forget and pass down to your grandkids. I love the evolution of American institutions no matter how fringe they may be. Oh, and being that tomorrow is July 4th, 2023 makes it that much more American. Scooters, Nathan's Annual 4th of July Hot Dog Eating Contest, and apple pie.

I would do this in a heartbeat! What a great, light-hearted adventure. Vespa 300 here, so I'd be able to cruise at highway speeds...which would be WAY more comfortable than 40-45 and worrying about folks creeping up on you from behind.

It's not about getting there faster it's about enjoying your time with family and seeing things you wouldn't see on a highway 😂😂😂😂. Ride that vespa home girl

I really want to build an enclosed solar power electric velomobile type vehicle & do a solar power electric trike packing trip. . The bullet 🚅 shaped aerodynamic enclosure would double as a sleeping pod.

I'm 70 years old and have rode motorcycles since 1964. I currently own a HD Tri-Glide due to my wife's many health issues. But I am looking at a scooter. Never owned one, but the Harley rides like a dump truck and is awful to steer, I think a scooter would be a lot better ride and much more fun to ride.
I think you cannonball run was really neat. Who knows maybe we can ride with on your next one.

I'm a harley fella too and last year bought a Honda ADV 150 scooter for my wife to get her on two wheels. Turns out I liked that little scooter so much I bought myself one! lol Top speed is 65mph if you have a back wind. It made me feel so young I TP'd my neighbors lawn and stole his mailbox the first night after buying it. Luckily my neighbor is also my brother and I did replace the mailbox and cleaned up the toilet paper the next day. Point is...get one, I bet you'll like it:)

That looks fun if you ever do it again I'm down. I'm in las Vegas Nevada. I have a 105cc. Needs a new belt as of last night. Snapped while riding and almost lost control luckily I was on a straight away and not a corner. But that looks so much fun tho

In the documentary, they say it’s 150cc. I think 3 scooters had catostraphic failures, but they had a backup driver who carried extra parts. One of the scooters needed an entire transmission replaced
