The 3DO actually had better video than the PS1. So games like Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger was actually better on the 3DO than the PS1. 3DO was a great system... it was just too expensive when it released. Loved the 3DO and the PS1. Great systems!
I wouldn't exactly say "better video". The PS1 has MJPEG decompression hardware while the 3DO has *no* hardware to manage video decompression. All decoding is done on the CPU and primarily Cinepak and DUCK Trumotion variants were used. They types of artifacting are pretty different between the formats and will manifest differently depending on your display.
I highly recommend the df retro feature on road rash. Goes into great detail about the three 5th gen console versions and their respective strengths/weaknesses. Anyways this is a nice vid- good choice of games and clean footage 💪
Even is the 3DO version looks very slow, it's much much better, the gameplay is less Arcade and the sensation are really superiors. But PS1 was nice for an arcade game and very fun.
I still prefer to play the 3DO version of Need for speed. The PS1 has a higher frame rate but feels like its running too fast. So its easy to lose control of your car
What emulators are you using? As the maintainer of the Opera 3DO emulator I would say that comparing titles using emulation isn't really proper. 3DO emulation, even when using Phoenix, isn't as accurate as modern PSX emulation and there are also some features of the 3DO that simply aren't emulated such as the full interpolation/upscaling. While I get that it isn't practical it really would be best to capture actual SVideo from both systems and probably while using ODEs so that failing CDROM drives aren't causing issues. For instance: some 3DO games which stream data can have slower framerates due to increased latency from failing drives.
That's via Retroarch. Sadly. My fZ-10 died a little while back so couldn't play them on real hardware. I think most are aware that 3do is slightly slower even on real hardware. However. Graphically. 3DO can be seen to win on several games.
@@JustJamie1983 So it's clear I didn't want to be critical of your work but to provide viewers context. There is a lot of nuance when comparing 5th gen systems. Yes, certainly, the 3DO is overall a weaker and slower system. It was releases in NA 2 years earlier than the PSX and its design started around 1990. Hardware and software was rapidly advancing back then. Unfortunately, there were some bugs in the 3DO hardware that had to be worked around in software that held it back a bit as well.
All 3do games look better than the psx. Need for Speed was only one that was slower. I got both Versions here. We we're all stunned when the 3do came Out. Fantastic console👍
3DO generally looks like it has better image quality, which is what I remember from back then as well. Of course that wasn't true for everything, some games favored one console or the other, but the 3DO was no slouch.
The 3DO has such beautiful visuals, that I'm happy the developers gave us enough time to admire each and every frame. They look like PS1 cutscenes. Those often animated at 15FPS too.
@@JustJamie1983 Not only that, but it has too many flaws, like only 3 face buttons... I mean, SNES has 4 face buttons. Like, come on. Daisy-chained controllers, WTF? No memory cards. Well, I guess they haven't been invented yet, but it was such a huge advantage of PS1. 3DO wasn't that bad when it was released. But the moment PS1 came with ergonomic grips, 4 face buttons AND 4 shoulder buttons, their fate is sealed. Dual analog sticks and vibration feature were like the ultimate finishing blows. PS1 had such a string of useful innovations that defined videogame controllers forever. Any other console had no chance.
@@JustJamie1983 Only ever knew one person who owned one, and he lived on a farm worth over 400 million, so suffice to say yeah, it was a PRIVILEGED console to own for sure....

I'll check it out!
He never goes into detail about 3do and doesn't care to. Even his 3do video on NFS is pure ignorance as to why his 3do runs it so bad.

Only Starblade looks better on 3D0 (it's less blurry), but the PS1 wins for every other game with a much better framerate.
Agreed 👍
The 3DO could have been the EA console.
100%
It was for about one and a half year. It got all kinds of exclusives including some that were never ported like the madden and fifa games
I still prefer to play the 3DO version of Need for speed.

For some reason they called that game "Need For Speed"
3DO melhor gráfico, porém com menos fps.

Should have done StarFighter!
If I did that. Somebody would likely have said "should have done starblade" lol
@JustJamie1983 starblade is fmv, Starfighter is 3d, only reason I say that. Really shows what the 3do can do if it's optimized for it.

Absolutely. One of my favourite consoles.
Você é maluco se acha o 3DO melhor
❤3DO
Total Eclipse was better on ZX Spectrum
Totally different game lol
Nice, thanks.
Thank you for watching 👀

Absolutely agreed.
O 3DO só perde em frame rate, nós gráficos são bem parecidos.

200 vs 160
PlayStation has faster car
3DO never stood a chance, the PS1 is a BEAST!!!..
Too pricey in its day. Not enough quality games for it. Shame.
