I thought they both sounded pretty good but if I had to choose one I'd probably go with the Turbo Rat only because that's the pedal Dave Grohl used all over the first Foo Fighters album and I loved the tones he got on that first album it was dirty as 🤘🤘
Dave used the Turbo Rat for the album only on Weenie Beenie and Exhausted. However he used the pedal (as main pedal) through their tours from Early 1995 to Summer 1996.
Interesting. As you say the filter on the turbo seems to make more of an effect and also very clear that the power in the volume is much greater on the turbo but to me the sound of both of them was identical. If you close your eyes could never notice the change. Great sound by the way. Clearly these pedals have both seen years of action.
Someone needs to come out with the Pizza Rat pedal... I love both of these, but anything with Turbo in the name is inherently better than anything without Turbo in the name.

I would love to see a review of the TC Electronic Magus Pro (Rat) that is $65.00 USD. It is $10 cheaper than a ProCo Rat II. It has a switch that gives you normal, fat and turbo. The odd thing is that it claims to have LM308 OpAmp and since they are no longer made using them for a mass produced pedal seems unrealistic if indeed they do use one.

They contacted me first but they did it thru a guy that does demos at large city stores with a truck load of signs and bells and whistles...they would not give me or lone me product but I could be told of a new product 6 hours before midnight of the release date to be able to post their reviews on my site. Not even their guy in the field would give me his E. let alone a direct E. to the company. They also had no way to even get help with a product or mail a question. WTF!!!
The LM308 thing is such a corksniffing thing. Ive used rats for years as pretty much my only overdrive / distortion and I actually put LM308’s in couple of the new rats, just to see if there’s any difference and really there was no notable difference afterwards, especially not in the context of mix

I got it for curiosity, I think it has a lot more punch and balz . All these new and improves try to turn it into a Klon. WTF ...That is exactly the opposite of what makes Rat II so great!
I've definitely heard different demos of the Proco line of Rats that have sounded super thin and fizzy, especially next to clones with more low end. Both of these Rats sound huge through your setup. Did they sound that big in the room? What's the best way to record/use a Rat in your experience? Cheers, good video.
Hi Zachery...they sounded pretty much the same in the room. The console behind us has some great sounding preamps so that might help a bit and we blend the real speaker/mic with the Two Notes Captor X IR loader which also makes the sound a bit bigger...but other than that we try to keep the signal processing to a minimum...Alex rolls off some bottom end but I think that’s about it!!
Can anyone suggest a rat model closest to the woodcutter rat? I’ve found a usa flat box op od07 rat2 for a decent price, but would a modern production turbo get closer to this sound? The woodcutter still rat sounds absolute top notch to other compared models, and in this video too.

Woodcutter was just a guy who stuffed boxes with the same parts kits every other Proco employee used. They don’t sound any different than any other rat because of him.

ProCo did a thing where the people that assemble the pedals put their “tag” inside of the pedal…and one of the people who assembled RAT pedals in the 90s was someone with the tag “Woodcutter” and lots of people consider those to sound better than others! People refer to those as Woodcutter Rats…
I run an overdrive into a turbo rat, great stoner sound. I don't think these guys are rock / metal oriented enough to do a decent review. excellent players, but I don't think they get it.

oddly, my Mosky Black Rat has a much more pronounced difference between the Turbo and regular Rat modes. These sound pretty similar!
