It's ironic that the Turbo Rat sounds LESS gainey to me, hits that "light overdrive" spot that the Rat is capable of at low gain way earlier than the regular one does.
I was just looking at trying out a Turbo Rat and pit it against my Rat2. The Turbo seems to have that little more clarity I wish the Rat2 had. Great comparison.
Thanks for the great comparison, I decided to go for the Turbo RAT! Only difference is that I have bought a new model compared to the older model used in your video, but they sound pretty much identical and I love it :) oh and btw, my amp does not like it if I turn the volume on the pedal all the way up lols
Cool vid. I have a 1986 Rat, a big reissue that I bought when they came out in 91 (I think?), and an original Turbo with the LM-308 chip. They all sound similar but the Turbo is the one I like the best and the one I use, I use it mostly in my bass rig but I like it on guitar as well.
Turbo RAT is supposed to have less gain right up until you push the LEDs that it's using to clip, instead of the usual RAT circuit. Once you push the Turbo hard, the LEDs act very similar to valves(tubes) and the break up as much as the normal RAT circuit.
Had a Turbo for many years.. Favorite distortion pedal i've ever had tbh.. But then it broke, which was weird since it was built like a tank.. I lost it when i moved, which is dumb of me.. Anyways, i'd take a Rat too, both iconic pedals.
I have two Woodcutters from ‘88, the Turbo and Rat 2. I get the same result with the gain, the Turbo needs to be pushed a little more but has a nice clarity about it. The Turbos are more focused in the lower mids, the regular Rat has more of a high mid focus and is slightly less bassy. At certain settings you can dial them in to be almost identical sounding. I think the Turbo does maybe a bit better with the lower gain tones because you get an extra bit of bass, whereas the regular Rat loses a lot of bass with the gain dialed back. But I think the regular Rat maybe does the gainier stuff a little better. Both superb either way, although I do think the Turbo is very underrated compared to the regular one, especially 80’s examples which are still cheaper than the regular Rat 2 of the same era. Nice comparison 👍
@@WeAsACompany You’re welcome! I think the loop like you used is an optimal way to do a comparison like this, it’s way less distracting than with a lot of busy playing...easier to get a grasp on the tones.
The Turbo seemed more articulate, perhaps emulating higher head room of a more powerful tube amp, even if the simulation was with a solid state/digital amp ? As the Rat has evolved into a Rat 2 and whatever else, there probably is a lot of common ground within the sweeps of the potentiometers. There is also new ground as the Rat is improved in it's Vintage & Turbo formats. If one is looking for a new & improved, perhaps even more versatile Rat, the Turbo seems to be that pedal. If historical & period correct Rat is the desired pedal, the Vintage Rat is that pedal. They both seem to be manufactured within tolerances of variance for each pedal. As the components inside the Rat have been substituted & altered, this is probably as good as ProCo can do to be consistent with delivering an authentic product to consumers without losing market share & alienating their customer base with a product that is too vastly different from the originals ?
