Sometimes, Christians can be so caught up in trying to find errors until they forget about sharing the gospel. I don't have images of what Jesus looks like because I don't know. I worship Him in spirit and in truth. However, someone who is conveying a message through acting out the Bible is not the same. The Bible that we have in English was translated but there are words we use in our language that is completely different in another language. We should always pray and ask God for the proper interpretation of certain scriptures for our time and culture. Let us stop backbiting each other and start sharing Jesus, the hope of glory. Shalom.

I think we should be careful that in using artistic license that we do not make Jesus into an image of our imagination instead of who the Bible says He is. This idea would fit in with the 2nd Commandment because it is not about just making a physical item to worship. It's also about not making any likeness which could be a mental image that does not reflect truth to worship. And if this TV show were to cause someone to stumble at the 2nd commandment it would be in creating a false mental image.
However, regarding the commandments we also need to be careful of the 9th commandment when using artistic license. The 9th commandment is often thought of as 'do not lie' but more accurately it is to not bear false witness. We need to remember that the people in the Bible who believed in Jesus are very real people and that we will meet them in the Kingdom someday. To make an insinuation about who they are without evidence in the Bible to back up the claim could be bearing false witness about them. And frankly I wouldn't want any of them coming up to me and asking why I portrayed them improperly.
Finally, I refrain from watching shows about the Bible all together because over the years I have found stuff like that is usually not completely accurate to the Bible. And it is easier to not get something stuck in your brain than to have to unlearn something stuck in your brain. And perhaps it is also because of an early Christian rock song I used to listen to by White Heart called 'Read The Book (Don't Wait For The Movie)'.

What the real problem ppl have is that the show is popular. There have been thousands of depictions of Jesus and other Bible characters. But it’s fear, fear dictates that they must denounce bc ppl might base their faith on a tv show since they love the show. The creators don’t encourage worship of the show or their depiction. It’s not blasphemy. We’re talking about ppl who believe evangelism and Christian works should be boring. Ruslan is correct. It’s the individual’s responsibility to pick up the Bible, grow in faith, whatnot. The show isn’t doing something wrong simply bc they made s quality product.

It might not be breaking the literal 2nd commandant but i fear like it goes against the spirit of the law, to make an image of god in your mind that contradicts what we're taught in scripture- god's word.

She used to listen to Joyce Myers when she was a new Christian, and Joyce was what got her into Christianity. As she grew, she realized Joyce wasn't really all that biblical, and had many theological issues, but at that point the seed was planted, and she then started seeking out other sources.

I always felt i needed to actually read the Bible instead of just referenceing bits and pieces, but once I watch The Chossen I felt so inspired and compelled to do so. I've seen comments posted on social media talking about when Jesus cried I cried and I had to back up and say hold on This is an actor This is not Jesus. And that's where the thin line is with me. They're actors portraying actual people. That lived years ago so I think that viewers need to be really careful because it's easy for Satan to take something that was harmless and cause it to become an idol but people don't understand that.

Most importantly we are again the image of God esp if we have believed in Jesus name, even stronger than that you are not just the image, are you not the body of Christ himself with the purpose of presenting the gospel. The priest said this to me, "We hold reverence for the icon because of Christ who lived in that person, not the person that lived." Which is similar to Jonathon's view of icons pointing to Christ and then to God. - 13:10 I think when Jonathon mentioned how idols were worshiped and depicted in the OT is very different from how icons are venerated today. - 12:00 I'm sure many people end up worshiping icons, turning them into idols, but I think that's a flaw on their part not the Church as a whole. If my priest and his predecessors all agree icons don’t (generally) and weren’t made to break the 2nd commandment. Then, I have to trust them because 1. I remember seeing various live action representations of different part of the bible, and while they were informative and helped present scripture in a more visual manner, they were clearly meant for teaching and were usually dry (even when using drmatic visuals or music).
Did people get this worked up over Disney's The Prince of Egypt? 😅

I agree this can be a personal conviction!!! Yet there are definitely other things wrong with the Show. We as Christians are supposed to be set apart there’s no reason why we should Mormons who believe complete lies about Christ help but a “Christ centered” film together. If ppl are “coming to Christ” yet it’s the wrong Christ there’s no salvation!

Ruslan, love you brother. Love what you're doing. Found your channel a little while back, recent subscriber, keep doing what you're doing. However...I think you're a little off target with your take on this one. I appreciate your conviction and support of the spread of God's word, but you spent the entire episode refuting Voddie's take, and only briefly passed over the danger if he's right. Those deep in the faith can separate the fact from the fiction, but if a fictional television show is your introduction to Jesus, you're getting a fictional Jesus. You're making an assumption that it feeds the Word, but what it's actually doing, by the show creator's own admission, is adding to the Word. The life of Jesus is full of enough content to fill books. A limited television series has no need to add anything.
Regarding your comment that the creator and actors have given the disclosure statement that "this isn't the Bible"...then why are they making the show?
We're all subject to our own conviction. If the Holy Spirit wards someone away from such fictional tellings, who are we to tell them otherwise? With that being said, if God wants to use this show to call people to him, he definitely has the power. My fear is just the opposite, if good can use it, evil will be the first in line to corrupt it. Guard your hearts, there's only one true Word of God. Everything else is false.

The creators DEFINITELY do not claim to be adding to the word. That would 100% be heretical and condemned in the Bible. They have a disclaimer that they are not doing so at the beginning of the show. Nor are they attempting to contradict what is in the word. They are simply playing out the idea of what might have happened in areas that the Bible does not specify… but this is not to say IT DID HAPPEN. They in no way claim this

@jacobbaum6421 Hi Jacob, I appreciate your thoughts, and I understand your position. I want to clarify something, though. It wasn't my intention to insinuate they were intentionally trying to alter Jesus' story. I believe they have good intentions, truly. I love a good Bible story movie, but when it comes to the representation of Christ, that is a road paved with pitfalls. Dallas, the shows creator, had an interview with Kirk Cameron where they both expressed the "filling in of details" using the creative license argument to accentuate the story. Which appears to be a similar perspective you express by "playing out the idea of what might have happened". In my mind, that's adding unsubstantiated parts to the story of Jesus. As if His story isn't compelling enough on its own Biblical merit. Why not tell the story of what we know happened? It just feels odd. I was actually going to give it a shot, but after watching some interviews with the people involved and how they were going about it, it just didn't sit right with me. I would encourage everyone to form their own opinion, but be wary, the story of Jesus is not a trivial thing. The good news is, if truth is what we seek, then truth is what we'll find. Thank you for your comment, Jacob, God bless you on your journey.

@@tryingtodobetter290 I came up with mainly two reasons why they do so: 1. The show is aimed at a public audience so it´s not just Christians should be able to understand but also agnostics. They therefore need to add aspects and storylines that help people understand the characters. The Bible doesn´t say much about Peter and the other apostles just portraying as the Bible does is not interesting enough for a common audience from movie making aspect. So you need to build a story around them to introduce them and help the viewer that´s a stranger to Simon, Andreas and the others build a connection to them. A movie or a show isn´t a sermon the point is to show people the world of the first century AD and make them imagine how they act living in that world. There are many aspect biblical stories take for granted a comment dude may not understand like who are the Pharisees, what´s the sanhedrin etc?
      2. If the show followed the Bible verse by verse on could argue they try to replace the Bible. So the critic of a show breaking the second command stays. But the alternative of using an allegorical way as portrayal has also its cons since people might not understand the Christian implications. I recently learned that some people consider Lord of the Rings as Christian. I read all three books and watched all three movies but I never thought of it as Christian and I still don´t.

Thank you for articulating this so well. I have had a hard time explaining my position to Christian's and non-Christian’s as of late and this did it with grace. I watched a few episodes with my wife and we decided not to continue because it in-fact made us feel uncomfortable. To make a non-biblical comparison, other movie adaptations of books like for instance the Hobbit that most read as a child first before there was an actor to portray the character. Did we picture Elijah Wood as the Frotto or Orlando Bloom as Legolas? No. In fact the characters take on its own form in your imagination, that is until a movie replaces it. Now I’m forced to picture these actors instead of the image carved together by the word descriptions from the literature and my own imagination. This could easily be applied to numerus other movie adaptations from books as well classic movie remake’s that no one really asked for. So, to wrap up my point, for those NEW to the faith, this could potentially cause SOMEONE to envision the actor portraying Jesus in the Chosen since they would be very new to the faith. When judging my own heart against the Commandments of God I find it easiest to test my merit against it when I feel I may be in contradiction., “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. Proverbs 9:10. Id much rather miss out on something everyone else is doing than be incorrect and be in opposition to the word of God. Ask yourself... if the whole world is onboard with something these days shouldn't Christian's be hesitant to jump on the band wagon too?

It's not about the platform being presented on. It's the fact that the chosen has now become a stumbling block to people. So many think of Christ as how He is portrayed in the tv show. And the show It's self is putting out alot on study guides and things that don't particularly line up with scripture well. Or the way they say things and do scenes in the show doesn't line up with the bible. In this is where the issue lies. I know they say it's not a replacement for the bible but alot of people are treating it that way. It's on the people doing this to repent, but if the stumbling block was not there then it wouldn't be an issue.

The way people worship these actors is very much idol worship. Do I think that was Dallas' aim? Absolutely not. I think that those particular fans need to check their hearts and make sure that they are putting The Chosen and the actors in the correct perspective. Such a great video and discussion! I think what we have to remember when it comes to idols is that it is the condition of man's heart that can turn something completely benign into an idol. For example, God gave instruction for the Children of Israel to load up to take with them, much of the wealth of Egypt. I'm assuming that would have been gold, gold jewelry, etc. Those things were not being worshipped by Israel, but when their hearts went astray from God, their hearts instructed their hands to fashion that gold and jewelry into an image of a golden calf so they could worship it. The gold items themselves were not idols, they created an idol from them. The Chosen or it's actors is not the idol, designed to take attention away from God. Dallas is careful to stress this message over and over and point people to utilize it as a tool to point their hearts toward God. We would have to throw out every popular preacher, book, devotion, because they can become idols because the heart of man turns them into such. The message to people has to be, guard your heart....do not allow anything to replace God. But certainly we can utilize good resources to point us or guide us to God. What would Voddie say about Mel Gibson's Passion of the Christ. I personally know many people that came to a saving relationship with Christ after watching it. I think there are bigger issues we can address here. If you know someone watching The Chosen, DISCIPLE THEM! Don't miss a fantastic opportunity that has been teed up perfectly to disciple them. I disciple several women and have occasionally used The Chosen as a tool to point them to and lead them through Scripture to follow and obey Jesus and strengthen their faith.

I can't watch the scene with the woman at the well without crying. It also made me realize, once i was inspired to read that section of scripture again, that although she is often portrayed as an adulteress or a prostitute, we're only given bare facts. She has had multiple husbands, and her current parter isnt her husband. That's it. She could have been an adulteress, or she could have been a widow several times, or a victim of abuse, etc. Whatever led her to live with a man not her partner, we don't know. So i personally love that The Chosen decided to give her a backstory of a women whose good intentions and subsequent mistreatment led to a life of brokeness and status of an outcast. He SAW her, He specifically went to Samaria FOR HER. We may not know the specific details of why she was so isolated/an outcast, but what The Chosen reinforces was that he cared about her even if society didn't, and he wanted everyone to know that even the outcasts to know their value to God and their opportunity for salvation.
      Gets me every time 😭😭

Hebrews 10:20 (NLT)- By his death, Jesus opened a new and life-giving way through the curtain, that is, through his flesh.
This Bible verse is referring to the Temple Veil, thus God Himself is deliberately making a visual image representation of Jesus' flesh. This very clearly says it's permissible to Artistically depict Theophanic Appearances, because Theophanies are Veils, not the infinite appearance of God. God is not restricted to one man, God merely arrived in the form of veils to reach out to us, a man and as a bush in the past.
God said not to depict his infinite form because
      A. How can the finite depict the Infinite
      B. Choosing to bring the infinite into a finite object leads to Idolatry.
Yet according to Hebrews 10:20, God himself permits the depiction of Veils since God's Veiled forms do not expose God's infinite form.
I've also learned lately that Acting is permitted as a form of Messaging.
Since Jesus' flesh and the Burning Bush and the Angel of the Lord are all Veils, I see no consistency in calling Artistic Veils Sin.
As beloved as Voddie is, if he wants to be consistent with his view that actors portraying Jesus are committing Idolatry, then he must accuse whoever made the Temple Veil for committing Idolatry for making a visual of Jesus' flesh. Even though God permits the Veil as a visual symbol of Christ's Flesh, not according to me, according to Hebrews 10:20.
What's more, Voddie proclaims himself as a "fire-breathing, TULIP believing, five-point Calvinist." Even though Calvinism is dangerously inconsistent with God's Character when you think about it. I know there's a difference between Calvinism and Reformed Theologies, I'm just quoting Voddie himself. Calvinism is dangerous because if we are all pre-determined to Heaven or Hell, what's the point in trying to lead a Good Christian life in the first place?
From what I've learned, I currently believe your right about one thing particularly fayewood1377. Voddie is heresy hunting. According to Hebrews 10:20, this hunting has been in vain in this case. Of course, that depends on the direction of the Chosen crew. If people start worshipping Jonathan Roamie, we'll have problems. If the Chosen crew is merely making a message to Worship Jesus, then that's wonderful. Since Acting, according to what Scripture implies, is just Messaging (period), then I see no sin in Acting as Sacred Veils and Heroes and Villains as long as the Message(s) to Worship Christ and lead a humble life are made clear. I fear Voddie is a legalist. Pray for him and the Chosen Team.

Jesus meets Nicodemus in The Chosen series, and much of their conversation seems scriptural. There are subtle changes, however, such as adding, "What does your heart tell you?"-a popular Disney line. (Remember, the Bible says, "the heart is deceptively wicked".) Later in the series, Jesus says, "Soon it'll all be about the heart”. Subtle is the nature of such mystic teachings.
It's worth noting that in this same scene, Nicodemus kneels at Jesus’ feet and The Chosen Jesus stops him, telling Nicodemus he doesn't need to worship Him. The Catholic Church hates the worship of Jesus, and The Chosen follows suit.

Throughout the series, disciples like Matthew and John interview people, running around with notepads and writing down hearsay that will become their supposed Biblical books. In one case, a woman runs by crying, "He healed me!" Matthew, in desperation, calls her saying, "Healed you of what?" The show attempts to destroy the inspiration of Scripture, portraying it as a common book comprised of hearsay.
The Bible says, “Holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost”. 1 John 1:1-3 declares the gospels as eyewitness accounts, and 2 Peter 1:16 echoes this truth. Yet according to The Chosen, John 21:25 came from Mary Magdalene and not John himself. In their rewritten gospel, The Chosen Mary Magdalene plays an oddly feministic role for that time period and even becomes a disciple, traveling with Jesus. There is a subtle deconstruction of inspiration, transforming the Bible into a book of hearsay and fables rather than truth.

      @@Jerome616 3 - An Arrogant Forerunner
In The Chosen, John the Baptist is arrogant, disrespectful, and always questioning Jesus. In one scene, Jesus says he is not ready to get into specifics, and in a flippant voice John the Baptist responds, “You appear to not be ready to get into the specifics on a lot of things”. In a previous discussion, Jesus speaks to John the Baptist regarding incest and adultery, saying, "I understand it is against the law of Moses, but I am here for bigger purposes than breaking rules". This gives the impression from “Jesus” that John, who is about to confront Herod, is uninspired and even foolhardy-and that “Jesus” doesn’t care about the Ten Commandments.
As if seeking attention, John tells Jesus he is planning on marching into Herod's palace to tell him off, and then adds, "My followers will love it." This isn’t what happened! In the Bible, John stated, "I must decrease", so why does The Chosen portray him as arrogant?

I love the Chosen, it sparked my interest of seeking and having a relationship with Jesus Christ. The Chosen team just basically preached the Gospels to me through a TV Series.

    Voddie is right.
If you pray and see this actor "be true to yourself feelings aside" its wrong.

So, tell us oh wise one- what are we to see when we pray? It is not relevant how He looks in our imagination, it matters that we sincerely seek and worship Him for who He really is, and seek to understand who he really is through scriptures rather than FALSELY create our own notion of who He is- or ISN'T. Can you say for sure that Jesus didn't look like Johnathan? Don't create a false image of Him- you are doing that by arbitrarily saying what He can't look like more than someone is by innocently having an impression in their mind of what He might look like based on what they have seen that makes them think of Him.

whether or not it's truly idolatrous to watch the Chosen, I've already heard people say that, after they've watched this show for an extended period, whenever they prayed or even thought about the Lord Jesus, they pictured the actor who played Jesus in The Chosen. That is not okay.

Yes! When it comes to the icon vs idol discussion! Exactly on point! I don't worship the cross, but when i see a cross it's a reminder of Jesus' sacrifice. I have a nativity scene that i keep up year round. I don't bow down to it, but it reminds me daily of the incarnation.

Great video, praise God. I love the Chosen, and I'm glad that God is using it. I just pray that we as Christians won't fight over our callings from God.

That's crazy that they said when they pray they see the actor guy as Jesus. I have watch all seasons of the chosen and I never for once thought to think of the actor as Jesus when I pray or close my eyes.

I get were hes coming from. But judge a tree by the fruit it bears. That show did miracles for me. I was so moved by the chosen, for the first time I went out and really shared the gospel, and fed the hungry.

You’re justifying the means because of the results which is a fallacy. I don’t know where I stand on this issue honestly but I don’t think it’s necessarily morally right because it helped you in your faith.

So you're saying the TV show has a bigger impact on your Christian walk than God's word? It led you to share the gospel but God's word, the literal gospel didn't? That's backwards my friend

Perhaps one day, we will all believe the same TRUTH, and we will have the same understanding, being aligned with God's will. I can't wait for religion to end! Maybe that is my vision of heaven!?

I’m doing the same thing your doing. I watch a part of the show and keep saying to myself is this part in the Bible? Then I go to the Bible and start reading. Every time I’ve done that there it is in scripture.
I’ve been reading my bible every day again because although the show is good and I enjoy watching it, the book is always better as the saying goes about shows made from books. Also because of the disclaimer before the first episode of the chosen I find myself watching each show then reading my bible to see what really happened.

How do you feel about parts that are more fiction, but tie in with scripture? Such as the background of the Samaritan woman?

The Chosen has is not a documentary, and is not perfect in all that it does... but it has done a far better job of showing Jesus in His historical and cultural context than every other portrayal I've ever seen. I love this show because it is very engaging, IT'S CLEAN, and best of all, it honors God, & it honors the Gospel.
