- Опубліковано 7 лют 2025
- Every summer we go on a 10 day overlanding trip out west. This year we would focus on Utah by starting on the Rim Rocker Trail from Montrose, Colorado to Moab, Utah. Rim Rocker is 160 miles and is best to do it over 3 days to have time and enjoy the scenery along the way. The views along the trail are incredible and we lucked out with 2 epic camp sites.

Ok, Matt/Cara... the time lapse of the stars and Milky Way was stunning... well done, guys. And Rim Rocker just went to the top of my list for this next year.
Thank you!!
You guys are awesome! You just added another desert trail to my bucket list, one that looks appropriate to my excitement level these days while providing puhlenty of the great Colorado and Utah scenery. Aspen groves with their startling white barks, open meadows, tire blackened rock......and with your fantastic overheads, you bring it to life. How I miss it !!! Thanks for the ride!
Great stuff my friend! Can’t wait for the next video with Sully!
Awesome! Bears are usually skittish, but it’s when they’re not, is when you gotta worry. Mountain lions are what I’m always looking out for… some are massive!
We have black bears and Mt. lions here in AR too. The Mt. Lion is the only one that concerns me. lol
@@OzarkOverlandAdventures same buddy, although with wolves returning, maybe those too!
16:00 You guys are a riot. I now watched a whole bunch of your videos and your sense of humor while in these car trips is a hoot. It just flows with all its quirks. Keep doing you guys. It adds a lot of character to the epic videos.
Thanks so much!! We love traveling together!
Love that you included the actual bear photo (from a moonless night) 😀
Love the RimRocker! Just did it in May! Did not encounter a single person on the trail. Some epic camping spots along the way. Great video! Glad we beat the record heats that some areas of Colorado and Utah are experiencing right now.
Super sad a portion of the trail is not affected by a camp fire that started in Pack Creek.
Agreed!!
We just got back from a trip to Gettysburg, PA. We hit VA, D.C., Maryland, PA, & WV. Did get to get off-road as much as I wanted but it was awesome.
Sounds like a blast!!
Great to have you in Colorado and I love the doo!
Thanks!
The star night shot was amazing! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks!!
Great video (night shot with stars was the best!!!)!
Awwww. Thanks!!!
Epic trips. Very jealous of all the fun you guys and girls have. Take care and stay safe.
There are coke ovens everywhere here in southwestern PA. This is coal and steel country here. They took coal and burnt it in the ovens to turn it in to coke which is basically like hot coals in a camp fire which they used to heat/melt the ingredients to make steel. Coal mines and coke ovens in the county I live in were shipped by train to Pittsburgh to make steel. Not sure what they were melting with the coke that was produced in ovens where you were. Loved the video. I'll get there someday. Waiting for my little ones to get old enough to remember. 3 & 1 are to young. When the littlest is 8 I think it'll be worth going.
That's awesome! Thanks for sharing that info. Get those kids out as soon as you can. They will love it!
I wish we had some of that snow down below here right about now. It's been hotter and drier than hell in the Denver area. The night sky video was fantastic.
So sad. So many fires that way now.
@@frenchie4wd Yes Ma'am.
Great video! It's so beautiful out there. I'm so happy you got to see some bears... and some cows. haha. The star time lapse was amazing!
Thanks so much!
That seems like it would be and awesome trail, definitely gonna get it on the bucket list
You should!
Love my trail cam. But that shot of the nights sky was epic!
Thank you!!
Indeed epic.
Awesome episode and yes definitely some breathtaking views 😍
Love the content guys and all the beautiful pictures keep them coming
Awesome Video Matt! The time lapse Milky Way shot was EPIC!
Thank you! I got 2 hours of sleep doing that timelapse. It’s like 230ish pics taken over a 4 hour time frame.
Thanks!!
@@frenchie4wd It was soooo worth it! Thank you for doing that. It's a bucket list item for sure!
Outstanding video wanting more, thanks for sharing.
Thanks! More to come!!
Great job, guys! Awesome as usual. We just arrived in Co ourselves. Bummer we missed y’all.
We will back in Moab this weekend.
Miss you guys!!!
Cara is awesome!!! That was a pucker level million 😂
once I found rim rocker, it became my go to route into moab. it's so much better than taking I-70, even if it takes 2 days.
Great adventure...Did almost the same route last summer 👍🏾
Nice 👍
Great drone work, very impressive and inspiring.
Epic videography. Nicely done🤘🏻
Thank you so much 😀
My Trailhawk is jealous of your super clean driver side phone mount, with the mount point high on the dash. Is there a video where you talk about that hardware and install?
I didn't do a video on that. It's a Bulletproof Mounting Solutions universal mount. You do have to drill holes in the dash.
Really good video. Thanks
Glad you liked it!
Would love to go on an adventure with you all sometime. You guys and gals have so much fun
I have a trail hawk when we went to Ouray to run the trails with my daughter we could go everywhere that they went and they have a wrangler that trailhawk is awesome and a little more comfortable for an older person I do not know if you have tried to run those trails in you trail hawk
Love the video.
Thanks!!!
Thank you!
Awesome video!!! Thanks for sharing. We’re going to hit this trail at the end of the month. I’m debating whether or not to drag my little trailer or put the tent on top of my Jeep
It's doable with a trailer.
@@OzarkOverlandAdventures thanks!!!
great video. Looks like this could be done with an e-gravel bike?
Do you find that your Grand Cherokee rides better than your gladiator ?
I kind of assumed it would on road but I'm not sure off-road. You got pretty big tires on that gladiator and when they're aired down it's not really intuitive to me which one would ride smoother. Plus the disconnected sway bar it's a toss up as for the guess. I could assume that the independent suspension would ride smoother but I'm not really sure. There's quite a tire size difference I think.
If I'm not under 30 PSI on my Cherokee Trailhawk, it's a skateboard as far as ride quality goes... Bigger tires helped smooth out a lot of road aired down. They're stiffer (the bigger tires) on road though at street pressures.
Dang! We were there about 2 weeks before yall. Would have been cool to see you on the trails!
Is Ophir pass an easy or moderate trail?
Ophir Pass is very easy.
any issues with the taking the trailer on any of those trails? I am looking to get one, and I keep wondering if I would regret it if it limits me.
We had no issues at all on those trails with the trailer. There were a few switchbacks where I had to take a little extra time on the turns but other than that there were no issues at all.
Nice video, you made the wifey jealous
Thanks!
Love your friends trailer. What type or brand is his trailer?
It's a Glodal Road Outdoors trailer. I have made a number of mods to it. It works great for our needs. If you have any specific questions I'd be happy to help you out.
@@jameschaisson2569 thanks. I thought it was a turtle. I think that's what they call them. It also looked like the ones I saw that were made in NC but I don't remember the name of them. I'd like to have something simple like that. Its nice.
@@jk_wrangler13 it's very simple. I've added drawers and a table. It has pistons that assist in lifting and lowering the tent.
@@jameschaisson2569 cool, Matt should do a video on your trailer so we all know
Great series and well timed as I am planning a solo photographic adventure to the SW in late August through early September. I too have a Grand Cherokee Trailhawk so I can use your trip as a guide to the type of trails I can travel. I’ve seen some of your earlier videos, but do you have any on the way you equipped the GC? I subscribed and I’ll follow the complete series. Thanks!
The only thing we have done to the GC is 1.5" wheel spacers, slightly larger tires - 265/65 R18 - and the Chief Products roof rack so we could do the RTT. Everything else is stock. Or first video on the GC is called "We say goodbye to Imogene". I'm crazy impressed with what the Trailhawk can do!! Hell's Revenge video coming tomorrow.
Love this video! Great job guys! I am heading out west next month from TN. Do you think an AWD Rav4 could handle this trail pretty well? I'm throwing on Toyo Open Country III's. I'll be overlanding for about 3 weeks through Colorado, Utah, and possible Cali
You would be fine on this trail with that.
Yes. You would have a lot of fun!
2009 Forest River flagstaff hw25sc
Absolutely gorgeous stuff guys! Can’t wait till I can do these things. Question for you and if James sees please answer as well. How do you like his set up? The trailer that can mount the RTT. That’s a direction I’m really thinking about going in the future instead of vehicle mounting.
We like it! Obviously theirs a balance to everything. Pulling the trailer with it loaded like that killed his gas mileage. We used about 1/2 as much as he did. But then again, we don’t have a wrangler and our vehicle was crammed. We have a 23 Zero tent on our camper as you can see in other videos so we’ve done both as well. There’s definitely a time for that when we have all the kids. I wouldn’t mind having a trailer like that if we didn’t need the space inside the smaller camper.
It worked pretty well. There's alot to being able to have things organized and with the trailer we are able to do that a little better. As you'll see on the next video it was beneficial to be able to drop the trailer go run trails. We like the trailer for longer trips. If you have any specific questions just let me know.
@@jameschaisson2569 I like the options you have with a setup like that, weight isn’t on the vehicle all the time and you can setup and leave and come back to. My biggest question would be what’s the actual fuel difference with pulling the trailer like your’s vs having the tent and things on the vehicle?
@@darksideemt actually compared to having the tent mounted on the jeep for last year's trip it probabalt wasn't that much of a difference. I think the fact that we were traveling with only the Trail Hawk made it seem much worse than it really was. My overall fuel consumption was about 13-14 mpg for the entire trip.
When you say that mid-way through it was kinda technical, what do you mean? Did you video any of that part? Looking to ride this on big adventure bikes and want to know if we can make it.
You can do it just fine on adventure bikes.
What map app do you use to plan your trips with? Also what mounts are you using with you phones.
Gaia GPS. We use Bulletproof Mounting Solutions phone mounts in both our rigs. They are great!!
Heeded there Friday! Hopefully the fires are out
You'll definitely have to detour around part of it before getting to Moab.
It’s only 26% contained as of yesterday.
Matt, do you think the 490 could do this whole trail?
Definitely. I would have no reservations doing it.
Could a van do this trail to Moab
What was the song in the beginning? Thanks.
It's called Back Roads by Will Harrison.
How many miles was Rimrock? Did you need extra fuel?
Robert it's about 160 miles total. You should not need extra fuel. Roughly half way is a town you will end up passing through, Nucla where you can top off on gas before you go off pavement again.
Unless it's Sunday morning when you pass through Nucla when the gas station is closed. But at 160 miles you shouldn't need extra fuel.
We made a detour to Naturita I think it was called and got some gas.
Horned frog or horned toad
Noiceee ❤
I've gotta ask, what's with the purple hair?? Thanks for the great videos!
Life is too short for boring hair. LOL
You know we have Bears here in Arkansas??
Yep. I’ve never seen one though. Matt has.
@@frenchie4wd My sister had Bears in her yard nearly everyday. She lives on Judea Mountain just east of Highway 7. The Bears loved getting into her Bird Feeders.
I live just north of Jasper in Newton County and see bear and elk every day here on my farm.
I've seen 4 bears total in Arkansas. We have a good population but they are still very elusive.
“If I get attacked on camera”, not one of your smarter thought processes. 😉. We appreciate your efforts to capture great footage, but please don’t sacrifice your personal safety for content. We would like to keep you around. 👍🏻. Now, those cow bears are ok….
LOL. Thanks!
I totally thought that was a bear. 😂😂
And then coke is used to make steel I think.
I don’t know if you set the add frequency, but I’m 12 minutes in and have had 5 ad breaks so far. It’s enough to make me stop watching.
That does seem excessive. I'll look into it.
@@OzarkOverlandAdventures thanks! I watch your videos frequently and it seemed like an abnormal frequency. Maybe it’s the new normal? Being a Patreon doesn’t affect a UA-cam account for commercials I don’t think.
Patreon is completely separate. I'm not sure how UA-cam decides how many ads to place in a video and why they seem to place more in some videos than others. They do seem to be placing more in them than they used to.
AWESOME VIDEO! Love you guys!
I’m going on the trail in May 2023 and I’m concerned about the trees & brush scratching our trucks. The trail looks very narrow especially on the UT side. We’ll have a Raptor and a modified F-150, is the trail wide enough?
The area of concern is between coordinates: 38.35811, -109.31901 and 38.40989, -108.93364. Thank you!
The trail does get narrow but it's not horrible. You could always bypass that section.
