She didn’t engage Colin with lies. He was the one who ruined her only marriage prospect by publicly claiming a dance with her, which Eloise saw. He ruined her chances with Debling and then he chased her on the carriage. Penelope had no idea he wanted her. She was trying to move on the minute he gave her a kiss. She had no time to even consider telling him, because he basically ruined her in the carriage. Eloise ruined their announcement and their engagement party for Penelope. She was having a lot of troubles, chased by the Queen, no longer a virgin and afraid Colin would set her aside, which would be she would be a spinster and out of her only source of income. While Eloise wasn’t ruined because Pen saved her. She could have made herself and her two sisters not being able to marry, while besmirching the family name. But even then, she would always have Anthony’s money and her family’s support. Colin would be raising another man’s twins if not for her either. They don’t understand they are way more privilege than Penelope, who never had family support her.
All of this! Yes!
Eloise's obliviousness is a problem in all her relationships. She and Pen's first fight in s1 is about Pen seriously wanting to find a husband. Yet here she is year 3 surprised when Colin tells her Pen is looking for a husband.
I'm going to disagree about whether their sex was a bad idea. It was an absolute measure of how much they love one another, body and soul and mind. Can you imagine these two people--both fundamentally lonely, both desperately in love, both absolutely sure they will never find love, both hungry for a touch intimate and loving, both utterly without hope in that direction--to suddenly learn the person they love loves them, with as fierce a passion as themselves feel? I say drop all the barriers they can as soon as they can. Some will not drop as soon nor as smoothly as anyone wishes, but by GOD these two are made for each other. They have been headed here for years, even though neither of them realized that. Tear. Down. Those. Barriers. Bind yourselves to each other, since that is both want. They have always wanted this. They want it now. NOTHING could make them not want it. In the end.
They won't have to ask for any kind of a special license. Even if Penelope just got pregnant, the wedding will take place within a few weeks.
Um...the Queen at this point has very nearly ZERO political power of any kind. She cannot arrest anyone, nor can she successfully order someone arrested unless they have committed a crime.

The older I get, the more I empathize with kids (people up until age 20) making bad choices because they're still developing and learning and if they continue to be shitty people beyond that, it's a different story, but as kids being shitty is something you can still learn from and grow out of.

Eloise is a little self centred but I also think because she's anti marriage and sheltered. If the Bridgeton's weren't powerful and wealthy she might see marriage as less of a societal pain and more that "these girls need to care about needle work because marriage is a financial survival". she is so free she hasn't had to work on social skills til now, through Cressida. Not malicious just in a bubble, a wealthy scandal retardant bubble.
Eloise is a bad friend! There are so many examples from every season. She is self centered like Emma (the book she was reading at the beginning of the season).
I wanted to slap Eloise this ep. She ruined Pen's first happy public moment with this nonsense that could've waited until tomorrow. Everybody already knows they're engaged, that's why they're there, so why the urgency? And when will she find a moment at an event where they are the center of attention? And Eloise isn't thinking of Colin at all. She is forcing this in such a way that he will find out in front of a bunch of people when she knows he won't take it well. And then ignoring the fact that Pen is having a panic attack?? Yeah, Eloise was nasty and cruel this ep, and if I was Pen, consider the friendship over. You don't do this crap to your friend. Maybe instead, get together and brainstorm a way to tell him. Eloise could chaperone them and leave them alone long enough for Pen to tell him. Something. Anything but this BS.
The crush I give her a pass because Pen tends to hide that part of herself & El probably saw them as the 3 musketeers.
I wish we knew the timeline because if the engagement party was days post 🪞 then she definitely had time to tell him

I've had different reactions to sex scenes in my life. But I've never reacted by cheering like my favorite team just won the big game until I saw this episode.
Also agreeing with Calrus, Eloise is not a bad person but she's very self-centered. We see it even now: her new bestie Cressida is legitimately going through some shit and trying to get support/help or just shared ranting about it but Eloise literally is too wrapped up in her own angst about a relationship that is not hers to meddle in to even give her some basic support. Eloise's family doesn't pressure her to get married and force her to get married to some old dude if she can't find someone and she takes that privilege supremely for granted with both Pen and Cressida, who are both in a position of no support from their families and deeply desiring one friend who cares about them and some financial independence. You'd think Eloise would deeply empathise with this but she's just blind to it because it doesn't personally affect her anymore.
Penelope was going to marry debling. It was less than 24 hours from Colin sabotaging her and debling to the mirror scene. She is 19. She had no idea what sex was (is there more?). She was already compromised in the carriage. Her world was spinning. When would she have had a clear enough head to tell him in that first 24 hours.
Eloise was a horrible friend and incredibly self centered. Eloise always treated Pen as a side character in her story. She didn’t really see her or pay attention to her. She is shocked that pen is capable of being whistledown, she’s shocked that Pen wants to marry & that Pen has feelings for Colin. Pen has always been a romantic and never hid that fact. Eloise just wasn’t paying attention bc she was so busy mocking the idea of love and marriage she didn’t see what was right in front of her.
I agree that Eloise is valid for wanting pen to tell Colin before they marry. But Eloise knowing the secret wasn’t foisted on her. She knows bc she invaded Pen’s privacy, went into her room and rummaged through her things bc she believed she had the right to that information. Even after pen repeatedly asked her to stop looking and doing things that could compromise herself and the bridgerton family.
While I would’ve preferred Pen tell Colin before they were intimate I don’t blame her. She’s a 19yr old girl and in the course to 24hrs Colin ruined her chances with Debling, declared himself, announced their engagement to his family & basically seduced her. Pen was so caught up in the moment she didn’t really think about the huge secret she was keeping until after they were intimate. She’s a bit overwhelmed and considering she lost Eloise from her life after she found out I get why pen is apprehensive about saying anything.
The funny thing is Eloise is so mad about Whistledown and a lot of it is steeped in jealousy bc while she talks a good game about changing the world she hasn’t seen or done anything herself. Nothing pen has ever written has actually been a lie. Her words are what she overhears bc the entire ton does nothing but spread gossip. They have all facilitated her success.
What Penelope has written about Eloise was handled misguidedly, but it was nothing but good intention to save her from the Queen in short amount of time (not to mention Eloise was panicking and scared, limited time to find solution).
After that, Pen felt so wrong she burned her quill and planned to quit being Whistledown forever, give it all up her life work for Eloise (also for Colin in the later episodes). Both Eloise and Pen made the bad choices. I believe, in the end Eloise and Pen wil be friends again and make the right choice, without blaming which one is more at fault.
There is no one who's most right, or most wrong. So far from the first ep reaction, you've been saying, 'I didn't hate Penelope, but Eloise is more right or Cressida is more understandable'. They are all young people who tried to survive, who made bad choices in different ways, and deserve equal sympathy and understanding without bias.
Pen need Cressida to save her? Cressida didn't save Pen, she did it to save herself from marriage. For Pen, that wasn't saving, that's just Cressida taking her life work credit.
If you can sympathize with Cressida bullying Penelope for years and years, because she was young and made bad choices, had poor family members. Surely, you should give the same amount of sympathy and understanding towards Penelope as whistledown, because she's also the same age as Cressida and had terrible family.
Pen got Bridgerton family support, but they're not there all the time. Cressida also got supported, she is popular she got the entire ton support while bullying Pen actually.
Also It's definitely not because Eloise was not interested in marriage and crushes. She actually didn't pay attention to Pen as friend.
She was So interested in Whistledown, and yet she cannot discover pen is whistledown?. That's an evidence, if she only listen, she could also discover Whistledown way sooner?. (even Claudia Jessie, the actress who plays Eloise said she should listen more).
When El had crush on Theo, Pen know straight away because she listen to Eloise. Friends supposed to listen to one another, despite it's not interesting to them that much.

This episode had so much emotional change from scene to scene that it kept me glued to watching but also getting just as anxious as pen.
On Cressida, I feel sorry for her and I don’t blame her for doing as she did. She wants a way out.
On Pen having sex before telling him, well she’s wanted Colin for so long and she’s probably thinking that just like the kiss she begged for that she should have what she can take before her secret possibly ruins it for her. Yes it’s a terrible thing to do to Colin but it is understandable.

I’m sorry what do you mean Cressida doesn’t take any joy in being a bully? She has done that every season against Penelope and every single time she relishes in it.
And her bullying of Pen cannot even be explained by the "rivalry" on the marriage mart that Cressida and Eloise talked about earlier in the season, because Penelope was not a threat to Cressida or anyone else on the marriage mart until Debling in this season. She had no prospects whatsoever, yet she seemed to be Cressida's favorite target.

Penelope was bullied by the rest of the ton and her own family and she added to that girls pains when she wasn’t even a threat!
It was already hard for her to tell him after they got engaged. Understandable and her life changed over night. She got swapped up and telling him would be potentially losing him.
But her sleeping with him made it so much worse. Now its potentially losing him while you are potentially pregnant with his baby. She put herself in a marina situation. Ironically her telling him about what she did to marina might put her in the marina situation. There is karma there. She should have told him before sleeping with him. But in her defence its colin that has his foot on the gas the entire time, not pen, she is just overwhelmed and holding on for dear life.
Let it be noted that Cresida wasn't saving Pen but herself. You can't say you extend grace to cresida and not pen when in entirety they are the same age, more or less the same situations with their families but each making different choices. I find it pretentious. They both made mistakes. I believe Pen would rather die than let cresida take credit for her work

To be fair, the one time he took her somewhere unchaperoned she did try to tell him, then stzff interrupted. In the carriage after that the queen's decree made her panic... otherwise they are never alone. Telling him at the party is a WILD demand.

Cressida is my favorite character on the show this season. I ship her and Eloise. Although I didn’t like the way El treated her in this episode.
