But Michelle Pfeiffer as Cat-Woman in Returns is the best one you could ever possibly have. She was supposed to return in Burton's Batman Forever- but they turned him down for his movies being "too dark" 😭 which is an absolute joke because they just wanted to get it darker and darker afterwards 😞
Keaton has always been my Batman. I only wish we could have gotten a trilogy and seen more of him with Catwoman.

1989 Batman was is and will always be my favorite Batman movie. Tim Burton brought back the dark seriousness and horror themed version of Batman's comic book roots. Jack Nicholson Michael Keaton and Kim Basinger were perfectly cast and Danny Elfmans score is so iconic and epic.
I heard that the reason Joker went to a horrible surgeon is because he needed to find someone that is corrupt enough that won't go to the police but also loyal enough to not rat him out to Grissom before he's healed.
He had to go to a backyard surgeon as the police would be scouring the hospitals for him.
That really sucks that Warner Brothers didn't want Billy Dee Williams playing Tw-Face in he sequels based on his skin color. WB eventually just wanted Burton out because of the controversy he caused based on the darker tone of his films. He was pretty much over it anyway.
It wasn't based on his skin colour. Billy Dee and WB were definitely on board for him to appear as Two Face in a future movie as part of the reason for him accepting the role was a promise that he could reprise the character, but when Joel Schumacher took over the franchise he felt that Williams was "too heroic" and decided to recast the part.
There's a rumour that William's and WB had a contract, and Williams got a payout when they recast the part, though how much of that is actually true is uncertain.
The joker reveal is incredible. Joker shows up at grissoms office and stands in shadow and it's so creepy. Love it
4K remaster ruined that scene. They overexposed his face and you can see him 😢

Keaton was amazing as both Batman and Bruce! I never tire of watching this film! The Burton aesthetic matched the tonality of the character and world beautifully. I still get chills hearing the soundtrack..so iconic!

The Burton aesthetic is more Tim Burton than DC Comics. Burton's Batman lives in a world where Superman, Wonder Woman, and the Justice League could not exist.
I'm pretty sure the smiles on the models for the Joker commercial were the magazine pictures he was cutting up and then did stop motion.

Speaking of those, I have recently been wondering if we as a society at some point immortalized Christopher Reeve as Superman.
This is the first superhero movie I saw at the movie theater when I was 11 years old and I loved it! Plus the soundtrack is killer!
Mine too! I had just turned six and was promised to see it as a late birthday gift. It forever imprinted on me to become the comic geek I am today. With so many Batman Movies out there, I refer to the Batmobiles by the actors who portrayed Batman. The Keaton is my all-time favorite Batmobile.

This movie, Michael Keaton…was my introduction to Batman but more importantly - to the comic book world. It will always hold a special place in my heart.
Keaton’s Batman always struck me as the most crazy. And I like my Batman crazy. He portrayed a guy who enjoyed being the g-damn Batman. And hands down his Batman voice is the best. The first “I’m Batman” is the most iconic to this day.
I'll _never_ forget seeing this film in theaters. I was 14 at the time, and a Marvel kid. It's not like I didn't know the prominent DC superheroes, but my knowledge of them came entirely from the Adventures of Superman ('52) and Batman ('66) shows, the Christopher Reeve films (which I'm old enough to also remember seeing in the theaters, somehow), and the various cartoons (all of which drew from the Adam West Batman). My dad was a Batman kid growing up, famous in our family for putting on a Batman suit and riding his bike around his neighborhood. My uncle (my mom's brother) was a comic nerd, but someone who also had degrees in physics and mechanical engineering, and is the relative I was always most compared to growing up (when I was really young, he would come over to our house with Frostys from Wendy's every week to watch the Incredible Hulk show). And we all go to see the film together as a family.
It was a revelation for me at that age. As a Marvel kid, I had no idea what "The Dark Knight Returns" was. My uncle, before we even exited the screening room proper, remarked, "Now _that_ was Batman." He could be really critical of portrayals of his heroes on screen, and while I'm sure he didn't hate what the Adam West show did, it was clear to me even at that age that this is what he really wanted out of a Batman film. My dad, a child of the silver age Batman, really did not get why they made the character so dark. The only thing I didn't like, even as I walked out of the theater, was how unlikely it was to decide The Joker as the guy who happened to kill Batman's parents. And much later, I'd start to recognize that I hated how obvious studio backlots were and how they'd take me out of a film. And I'm not crazy about Batman straight-up murdering bad guys. It wasn't until later that friends wised me up to the Joe Chill character, et.al. But a lot of younger fans don't seem to get just how influential this film really was, can't possibly grasp how big it was, culturally speaking (especially for its day), or how hard it was for the generation who were in college or younger when Batman '66 was aired to change their notion of what Batman was and/or should be. My dad didn't care that Batman was always intended to be a darker character; it just wasn't _his_ Batman.
So, this film also has major sentimental value to me on top of just loving it for what it is. We lost my dad in 2009, and my uncle in 2013 (I was trying to get him to try the Arkham games at the time...I *really* wish I'd been successful in that before he died, and it bugs me even more that I didn't try harder as the years pass; I really think he would've loved those games). I know this is a longer comment. The film just means a lot to me and can bring out the self-reflective and sappy sides of me.
This movie was massive when it came out. Keaton is still my favorite Batman. The merchandising on this movie was insane. Considering I was a 10 year old male, I was right in the target market. Everyone under 30 had a Batman logo tshirt. It seemed 9 out of 10 companies ran some sort of promotional partnership with the film. I saw it at the theater at least 4 times along with my friends. (Small town where the theater only had 2 screens. We saw quite a few movies more than once.)
Adam West's Batman '66 was my Batman too (as was the version in Superfriends from Saturday morning cartoons) but when I saw Keaton's version and Tim Burton's take on it I suddenly realized "Ohhhh...THIS is what he was supposed to be!" I then hated the idea of Heath Ledger trying to play The Joker after Nicholson nailed it (I thought) but after seeing Ledger's performance I was in awe. I dont know how, but the two performances are so different yet so perfect in their own right. No offense to Joaquin Phoenix or Jared Leto but neither, in my mind, holds a candle to either Nicolson or Ledger. (Or Mark Hamil)
@@alanfoxman5291 I had the same issue with Ledger at first. Part of it was that at the time, not only did I feel like Nicholson's performance nailed it, but I also felt like we didn't need another Joker live action movie, anyway, when so many other Batman villains deserved a shot in the spotlight. But maaaan, did Ledger and Nolan make that role their own. I still think that The Dark Knight isn't the best *_Batman_* film, but it's such a great *_film_* film that any concerns I had with wanting to see the a more canonical Batman pale in comparson to what they actually accomplished in that project. I mean... holy crap!

Keaton by far has the best cold and silent mannerisms as Batman, followed by Pattinson. Those two give such chilling presence everytime they're on screen, able to convey emotions with nothing but their stare. Glad I grew up with these goats

As much as Keaton is my #1 Batman and Affleck is my #2, I really have to agree on your statement!!! Pattinson did have that same cold look about him. I do think his Batman will be so much better in the next film. I am actually looking forward to seeing his progression as both Batman an Bruce.

I have to disagree. Keaton yes but Pattinson was horrible and so was the movie.
I was 16 when this film came out. And while I was a huge Keaton fan ... I, along with every other kid I knew, was highly concerned he was the wrong pick for Batman ... so much so we were not going to go see it. Granted, we were all amazed by Keaton's performance. Such a great film, it gets away from diverging from the comic. -- Amazing deep dive Erik!!
When this movie came out it is hard to describe how much it changed everything about superhero movies. I was a plus30s woman that was so impressed by Gotham city's look on the big screen and the strength of the characters. Also my introduction to Tim Burton. It really changed the feel of comics to movies. Dick Tracy also came out about the same time. I liked how the main characters had monochrome outfits to reflect the comic look. Dick Tracy wore in a bright yellow trench coat. It too represented a new look of bringing comic books back to the big screen, but it was Batman that is still great to watch today. At the time, it was Batman that people talked about. At my age then, it was my coworkers who took their kids to see the movie and came back to tell me that I was right about how good it was. Keaton is my Batman.
Tim Burton's Batman is iconic because it presented the dark side of heroic derring-do, where Superman is the good guy and doesn't engage in violence or use fear to make bad guys cower, Batman uses darkness and fear to fight the criminals and violence is a part of the weapons he uses against them. The art style and atmosphere are as Erik says what makes Gotham a twisted and maniacal landscape, almost like the city shuns the light and embraces the darkness and the shadows, the twisted and clashing architectural styles their own madness on display. This is a deep dive not only into how Batman changed superhero films but how it really illustrates that art direction is important to the setting and mood of the film and how it supports not only the director's vision and the actors performances but plays a part in immersing us the audience into the pretend world of Batman.

I know tons of trivia about the movie and rarely hear or see anything about it I haven’t known for years already. That being said, you revealed things about the film, and it’s connection to most of the Batman films since, that I never noticed or even considered.
My favorite new thing I learned is that the boy whose parents are shot in the beginning is wearing the same shirt as the man who shoots his parents. Chilling, yet sad, when you see what the shirt says…

To those that weren't around in 1989 when this came out, it was a HUGE deal. I remember stories on the news where bus stations that had the movie poster on them were being vandalized. This movie was everywhere that year and you couldn't escape it. And it lived up to the hype. One can definitely see it's influence in the years and decades that followed. I'm glad Warner Bros let Christopher Nolan have creative control, they should have given that same control to Burton, that Bat universe would look very different had they done that.
My nostalgia is tingling!!! My brother and I watched this so many times on the old VCR! The music! The Jack of it all!

I have one issue with this, and it's in the first minute:
No current on-screen iteration of Batman has been portrayed with Disassociative Identity Disorder. I'm not sure if Erik meant it literally or not, but as both Batman and Bruce Wayne remember everything that happened in the other's life, he does not have this disorder. I don't personally have DID, but a friend of mine is in a DID system, and I've learned a decent amount from them

This movie was seminal for me. Yes I shaved batman into my head at 17. So many other firsts too. First really great block buster I took a date to, first movie to give me a shiver from the visuals and the very reason I still watch every Dc and Marvel superhero movie and tv show that comes out to this day. I was hooked. Great DIVE Erik!
Just mentioning, one of my favorite parts about Michael Keaton's Batman is that he's NOT a playboy! He's an introvert like me, working on getting out of his shell like I've been all my life.
Also, almost anything could've been better than a man willing to blow all his money and have sex with just about anyone.

Jack Nicholson's portrayal of the Joker was akin to Cesar Romero's version from the sixties television show, the only other live-action version at the time, that he could have used as a reference.
I bet nicholson or burton refrain from seeing or referencing that campy show. Burton was hugely influenced by Frank Miller's the dark knight returns comics published in 1986. Hence his take on batman was too deviate as far away as possible to adam west batman.
The 60's Adam West Batman and Adam West himself went on to be shown the love an appreciation for his work ..but in 1989 that was NOT the case. The Superman franchise exploded and then crashed and the entire comicbook movie genre died along with it. Adam Wests BatMan is the only live action frame of reference people had - so the doubt surrounding whether the movie would be a success was huge.. PLUS, of all people to cast - they choose Mr. Mom?.... BeetleJuice is going to be BatMan?..PLEASE say this is a joke. Thats another reason the movie Exploded like it did.. so many people went in, kind of doubting wheter the movie would be any good and - it turned out to be GREAT.
Let's not forget that Billy Dee Williams' Harvey Dent DID eventually, and finally, get his Two-Face opportunity in the Lego Batman Movie! I LOVED this part of the follow-up film, it showed a clear fan desire for this continuance to have transpired in the first place.

I still remember walking into my first grade classroom when Batman came out, and seeing one of my classmates with the bat logo on the back of his head from a haircut! This movie is special to me because it was the very first one my dad ever brought me to go see at a theater! I’ll never forget it! I saw this the year it came out in elementary school and was instantly hooked. It was just so stylized and cool. The costumes, the gadgets, the villain. I had all the toys.
I never once noticed the bat symbol on his chest didn’t match the logo.

It's interesting all the steps they went through for the handkerchief wiping away the flesh makeup, when they could have just put white makeup on the handkerchief itself, having him wipe makeup ON instead of Off. That's how I always assumed it was done.
That’s how I always thought they did it too, very interesting to learn more about Joker’s makeup!
This is one of my top five films of all time. It's rare that a year goes by, that I don't view it. But even I'm shocked at all of the smaller details, that I never noticed, until I watched this video. It took me about an hour to watch this whole thing, on account that I had to keep pausing it whenever something interesting was mentioned, so I could pace out of genuine excitement. To put a finer point on things, Michael Keaton's performance and the surreal urban atmosphere that Burton and his crew (Furst, Pratt, Ringwood, etc) created, made this movie the most palpable, credible and for that matter, most faithful adaptation of a superhero comic, that there's ever been. My only real nitpick, would be that although Kane and Finger cocreated Batman, it's Bill Finger who deserves most of the credit. Maybe even a name drop for Jerry Robinson, but I digress. Love Batman 89. It was one of the movies I grew up watching on repeat and still love to this day. It’s iconic.

Wow, wonderfully written. Well done. I loved the references and sources. Very inspiring and makes the film more of a meticulously calculated work of art than I had first thought. I am most pleased that I had been made aware of things that I didn't already know although I watched this movie routinely with the other 3 on VHS.

I love Batman with Michael Keaton, just a classic.
Not just how it changed superhero movies forever, but how it changed superhero cartoons as well since the success of Batman 89 led to the development of BTAS, which also took a lot of influence from the movie and set the standard for all subsequent superhero cartoon shows that were NOT just for kids (including all of the DCAU spin-offs).That's certainly been my main source of gratitude for this movie as a 90s kid who wasn't born yet when it was in theaters.

I'm 43, this was my favorite movie growing up so I've seen it many, many, times. One scene I'm surprised that you didn't delve into was when Batman was flying the batwing towards Joker and was shooting large caliber bullets at him, which appear to strike Joker yet causes no harm at all. It was odd on multiple levels: 1. It showed Batman taking things to a new level by attempting to kill Joker by actually shooting him with a gun. 2. How Joker survived being hit directly with large caliber rounds from a jet isn't explained at all. I never understood this scene and thought it was poorly explained and not the best writing in an otherwise absolute classic of a film. I was hoping to hear your thoughts about it.
Doesn't Joker get straddled by the bullets? I guess the idea was comedic contrast with Joker's one bullet taking the Batplane down.
The laughing bag on the joker's dead body was a Bag of Laughs, sometimes known as a Laugh Bag. That was a well known novelty gag toy at the time. It wasn't explained because audiences knew what it was. Remember entertainment and varieties of ways to entertain were much fewer back then, and it was much easier for ordinary people to become aware of things that today would seem obscure.

This was my introduction to the world of Batman I think your analysis of the Bruce Wayne / Batman persona is perfectly right. There is one moment when Vicky kills Bruce about house used to visit her grandparents who have a house on the lake Bruce puts his hand to his face and when he tells her that sounds nice it comes off to me as he wishing he could have had that simple life instead of what he got this idea is emphasized when she immediately asked about his family and he seems to snap out of his fantasy and quickly just say Alfred is my family I do love how Keaton played this role you really feel Bruce Wayne's tortured psyche in this film his inability to really decide who he really is until he puts on the cape and cowl and of course Jack just being his amazing hilarious and somewhat horrifying self as the Joker just makes this so fun great job now we need to get you on Kevin Smith Fatman beyond podcast and y'all can tell us what you all think it's going to happen with Keaton returning in The Flash movie
@@DeepDiveNR Another moment that shows Wayne's mental health is when he and Vicki are in bed and he looks confused as if he doesn't deserve it then looks out towards Gotham as if he knows he is becoming normal and doesn't like it at all.

The only problem with Keaton's Batsuit is his magical eye shadow. This is my favorite part of the Robert Pattinson Batman. He takes that cowl off and he looks like an extra in a My Chemical Romance video.

I would love to see a deep dive into the first Star Trek film. I have strong memories of going to the cinema to see it with my dad who was a big Star Trek fan. The shot where they approach the enterprise for the first time in a shuttle, I can still remember my dad being speechless when we watched it.

When I was a kid, my uncle had a laugh-box with the same laugh from Joker’s end, so it was a legit thing.
This Gotham is the best one ever realized on film. My brother and I had this on VHS and we wore the crap out of it. There was a Looney Toons/Warner Bros/Coke commercial at the beginning. Great times.
