  • In this video I discuss the core AmeriCorps programs. Each one is a service year option, and the goal of this video is to help you make sense of/sort out the programs and find out which one fits you best.
    For each program I go over: the qualifying age range, location(s), program mission/what they do, the service work you should expect in the program, and what is provided for you while serving/once the program is completed.
    Time Stamps:
    What is AmeriCorps 0:43
    NCCC 2:08
    FEMA 3:30
    The difference between NCCC & FEMA 4:50
    VISTA 5:36
    State & National 6:53
    Finding more service year options 8:39
    This is all just the basics of each program and hopefully it helps explain/provide a clear explanation of each.

    This was the best video breaking each organization down. I would be interested in organizations for individuals older than 30. Thank you for making this video.

      Hi. Thank you! I am glad I could help!
      You can join these organization if you are over 30- with NCCC or FEMA you would have to be a team leader, but the other two have no upper age limit.
      However, I am not too sure about specific americorps programs set for the specific age rage. Definitely something to look into!

    I checked out your other video about NCCC. I'm glad that I saw this one because I have done both NCCC and STATE but I wanted to try a VISTA. Seeing this video explained more about that kind of program. "Thanks"!!!!!

      It is strange how each program is a completely different ball game. I hope your VISTA program goes well if that's the route you decide to take!

    Hey sabrina. I became aware of ameriacorps today. Being 51 yrs old, living in section 8, having no real job skills due to a lifelong battle with adhd, being morbidly obese with tons of arthritis including in my back where i also have a pinched nerve, i about jumped out of my skin when i learned about ameriacorps today. This could very well be the opportunity ive been looking and waiting for. I jumped on here and started looking up videos. some were a little helpful. Most were not. After about dozen or so, i came across yours. And i gotta say, im very impressed. You answered so many ques. You gave clear concise details with out technical mumbo jumbo. Made it very easy to understand. You did great. this is the best one ive seen. Keep it up.
    Do they provide all the training for team leader? For the time being, i need some sort of office job till i can get in better shape. Then i can go to the field. But, i have no experience with anything like this. Do they require any kind of experience?
    Thanks again and keep up the good work..🙂🙂👍👍✝️✝️

      H! I am so glad I was able to provide the information you were looking for. I'm happy to help!
      As a Team Leader with FEMA and NCCC, you do not need any experience, and you are provided with all the training needed.
      I say that, but want to emphasize, there will be situations that you will come up across where you feel as though no training would have been able to prepare you for. Though, that just may be life in general sometimes.
      There are also Team Leader Positions known as Support Team Leaders (STLs). It is the same idea as a Team Leader, but instead of leading a team in the field, you help support the teams from the office. This may be with media support, sending supplies, and helping with other needs. STLs usually work along side someone on staff and do mostly behind the desk type work.
      A note with this: While you do not travel around with a team, and are based in the office on the Americorps campus, it is possible you could be pulled into the field at any moment to take over a team, or lead a new team.
      I hope this helps! Good luck with everything and I hope you have a great service year, if you decide to go this route!

    Is it possible to enroll in two different programs ? For example, can I start a program while waiting on the training date of one I've already accepted?

    • @theworkingexpat
      @theworkingexpat  Рік тому +1

      Hi! If you joined one, then decided to move to another, you would have to quit the current one that you are apart of.
      With NCCC and FEMA it is technically the same program, and the campuses can/do interact with each-other. But, if you joined the southern region, then got accepted to the pacific region, you would technically have to leave, it isn’t a transfer- so to speak.
      With VISTA and State/National, the program is the same idea but different organizations run their own program. So if you have a VISTA position with habit for humanity in Portland and wanted to move over to the Seattle habitat, you would need to quit one and move to the other on your own. They are separate organizations.
      The best way I can think to explain it is like a sports team. If you want to be on a different team you have to quit the old one after being accept to your new one. You are still playing the same kind of sport but are now apart of a different team all together.

    I'm finishing up my B.S degree criminal justice from UCF. I'm looking for something to do after college but I'm not sure what I want to do. I was thinking Americrops may be a good thing to do. I applied for TFA but I want to look at other options as well.

      There are defiantly a lot of options out there, and its good to keep your options open as you are learning about other opportunities. Good luck with choosing which way to go, and with the rest of your school year!

    Hi. I am joining americorps vista in the fall. Do y’all wear uniforms?

    • @theworkingexpat
      @theworkingexpat  Рік тому +1

      Hi! Vista rules and regulations can vary from program to program. While there is technically a Vista uniform/shirt, it will be up to the discretion of the specific program you are joining.
      For example, I have worked with Vista members who could wear whatever uniform they wanted because they were doing environmental work, and I have seen some that worked behind a desk and would wear the shirt that the organization they are working with requested them to.

    Do you get the option on what work you’d prefer to do? Like for me personally I’m really only interested in anything related to being out in nature so trail work, building, ect.

    • @theworkingexpat
      @theworkingexpat  8 місяців тому

      Hi!
      With NCCC the goal is to cycle through multiple type of service work to try different things. Unfortunately you do not get a say in the type of service work you do, but it is SUPER likely you will get 1-2 service projects (you get 3-4+ during the year) that focus on environmental work (i.e. trail building, invasive species removal, ect..)
      For FEMA corps the work will be behind the scenes on disaster recovery, so you will not be working environmental.
      With VISTA or State/National you can choose a service sector/specifically apply to a project/org you want to work with.
      However, if you are looking to do environmental work specifically and want to do a full 11-12 months of service, I suggest checking out a conservation corps. Here is a list I made of 64 Conservation Corps Programs in the USA: www.theworkingexpat.com/post/64-conservation-corps-programs-in-the-usa
      Hopefully you can find one that works for you!

    Thank you so much! I can’t decide between NCCC or State/National. Would you recommend one over the other?

    • @theworkingexpat
      @theworkingexpat  3 роки тому +2

      You’re welcome!
      It really depends on what you want to get out of the program/what you’re looking to do.
      If you are looking to travel around, want to do hands on service in lots of different sectors, enjoy working with a team and have a year to dedicate, then NCCC.
      If you want to focus on one type of service sector of your choosing, want to be in one specific location, and have a smaller time frame, then I would say State/National.
      I have not done state and national but do have friends that have. Personally, do to all you get to do in NCCC, I would pick that one every time. Thats not to say the program doesnt have its hardships, everything does, but I feel like you get a lot of cool/diverse experiences out of it as opposed to state/national.
      I hope that helped!

    Which program should I join for a guy that's trying to work as a suicide prevention specialist?

    • @theworkingexpat
      @theworkingexpat  2 роки тому

      I did a quick search and it looks like VISTA may have some positions that deal with/raise awareness for suicide prevention. You could also have some luck finding this cause in State/National.
      In general, these two programs would be better for what you are looking for because they are more focused on one specific cause and you can apply directly to serve with the non-profit/cause you are looking for.
      I have not heard of any projects that deal with suicide prevention/awareness within NCCC or FEMA. I also can not picture them sending a team out to work with this cause due to the nature of the programs.
      With these two programs, you would not get to pick the projects you go on or the causes you support.
      I hope this helps!

    Can you do americorps Will in college?

    • @theworkingexpat
      @theworkingexpat  Рік тому

      Hi! You can do Americorps while in college, it just depends on the program. There are VISTA positions that you can take that will allow you to complete the program while still in college. For FEMA and NCCC, you would need to take a gap year as you need to travel around for 10-11 months and are not guaranteed time or internet to complete classes.

    what is meant by logistics? more examples for fema

    • @theworkingexpat
      @theworkingexpat  2 роки тому

      Hi, with logistics, its a lot of paperwork, documentation, coordinating, ect…
      For example, I’ve had friends in FEMA who would do things like…Work with the red cross to check people in and out of shelters or set up how registration may work. Gone door to door to document how many people were effected by a disaster, collecting data (a bit like a census). Worked phone centers to distribute information. Kept track of donations and supplies… Tasks and services such as these.
