For me, no doubt Jason was pure energy and playing live, he was so good with his playing and backup vocals but Cliff is the GOAT!!! He was so smart musically and taught James and Lars about music theory, layering and composing. James has said many times that Cliff loved to put things together musically that didnt belong. I just cant think of how much greater he could have been had he not been taken from this world at age 24.... RIP Cliff

James Hetfield was also good friends with Waylon Jennings and did a cover of Waylons song called "Dont you think this outlaw bit has done got out of hand". James recorded it on his own without Metallica and he also played all of the instruments on the original recording. Here is a link for a live performance James did at a CMT Waylon Jennings tribute show if your interested.

Hello from New England..According to CLIFF BURTON'S bass tech his secret weapon was a single coil HOT RAIL guitar pickup installed behind the tail piece controlled by a small toggle..When CLIFF wanted more power he used that toggle..Plus he used stomp boxes too and a wah..Peace from the Northeast

Best example of Cliff's creativity and virtuosity was his bass solo on Metallica's first album. Anasthasia, Pulling Teeth. There he really shows how the bass can be the lead instrument too. Worth to check if you want to see more his style, either the studio version or live version, even though quality of live videos are quite poor. The later performances from Jason and Rob are not on same level in my opinion, even though hard to compare with Jason as he's a pick player.
Other songs where Cliff's influence is strong are two instrumentals, Orion and Live is to Die (which was tribute to him, Cliff not playing). And creative use of bass is found also on Call of Ktulu, where Cliff does so much things in the background, kinda making the noice of the beast, which can be hard to hear without concentrating on the bass line.

Metallica was formed in 1981. They put out their first song on a compilation album in 1982. They released their first studio album in 1983 with the current lineup minus Cliff who passed away a year & a month after this performance. My favorite Metallica bass player was Jason because he was just wild on stage & he was amazing to the fans (got to meet him once). Rob is the exact bass player they needed in their 40s and beyond. He's very chill. He doesn't rock the boat. But he brings with him lots of ideas and knows how to integrate himself perfectly in the pocket of Lars & James' writing.

Cliff is the best obviously. He had so much natural talent. Having followed metallica since mid 80s here in Ireland I'd have to say Jason Newstead is my n2. The guy was such a credit to metallica after cliffs death. His energy on the stage was amazing. Not to mention his bass playing and backing vocals which were epic.

Metallica has never had a bad bass player. But Cliff was an absolute MONSTER on bass. And he played a very important role in Metallica's musical growth in the early days.

The thing about Cliff is prior to his death with a tour bus accident Metallica did not do videos (in the era of MTV videos) and they were doing extremely well by word of mouth, concerts, tape trading, and growing radio time. After he died they released videos and higher production. They went more commercial after Cliff was dead. SO there really are only fan videos of Cliff when compared to the others. The other guys are great too but Cliff was ahead of his time and inspired both of them. No one was remotely like Cliff when he was alive. Find some of the Anesthesia (Pulling the Teeth) videos of him and that is bass solo based songs.

Cliff is the 🐐 period! Jason had his own style and Robert is just as good! But cliff that’s whole other level period he’s the reason I picked up a Bass at 10yrs old

  • @PITTFOX

Watching anesthesia pulling teeth live for Cliff and Spit Out the Bone live for Robert will be a good showcase for both. Jason is likely less skilled as a player but really shines in other ways. Creeping Death Live in Moscow will a be a good showcase of what he does best. I go back and forth between Rob and Cliff on who I prefer but my list goes..
    1. Cliff
    2. Robert
    3. Jason

You need to do Anesthesia pulling teeth from Cliff. This one you can't tell much. You really don't get just how much Cliff contributed to Metallica. You really need to listen to the first 3 albums.

Cliff is the GOAT. There writing definitely took a hit after his loss. The Black album and crap afterwards would have never existed with cliff still around. On another note Newstead gave it his all especially in live performances. It's a shame how he was treated during AJFA

Cliff was the power house but, there is one member thats left out which is Dave Mustaine from Megadeth, In my opinion he is really the reason Metallica got the kickstart back in early 82' and I think you should check out Hangar 18 by Megadeth which is really good in my opinion.
