I loved your videos on Watamote and how you looked at it in ways other youtubers didn't, As someone with social anxiety, it felt really good to see people talk about and understand an anime so much about it. And I genuinely like the editing and commentary style on your videos. Bocchi the Rock is a recent anime that tackles social anxiety as well in a realistic manner, and though it's more comedic than Watamote due to the anime in general being more positive, it's still incredibly relatable to people with social anxiety. So I was wondering if you would be interested in watching and maybe making a video on it some day.

It's about this boy who picks up a vampire,makes a contract with him ,funny hijinks ensue , and the manga has a lot of character development. Ya know...I never truly understood how lack of music can make something so...incredibly uncomfortable. I mean this is an already unbelievably uncomfortable anime, but the constant silence makes it so much worse

Music and sound effects makes us feel like spectators, like we're out of the story looking in. No music and no sound effects? That's just real life. And when something this creepy tries to mimic real life...
Imagine being the person who was paid to write the subtitles. Imagine being paid to write "energetic, hot five-year-old". Would you have trouble sleeping at night after that?

Watching the entire episode I didn't really notice anything to suggest otherwise. He also calls the listener big sis, so... His title card thingy is a bit sus, but the rest of the episode is pretty much just a five year old rambling about his day and how much he loves knock off power rangers
"hot" meaning a high temperature could also have been applicable. the few seconds I saw of his episode gave off a "summer" feel, so 🤷♀️ if this wasn't badly written/translated, I'd be praising the platonic option about now lol

when the described the 5 year old as 'Hot' i had to skip as well. having an ASMR with little kids lulling you to sleep, okay. it would be nice if you are use to kids being near by such as your own kids or younger siblings. but as soon as you go saying the kid is hot you are heading in a direction that i can't follow
As a straight woman every single clip you provided from this show (Food stall man was an obvious exception) made me feel so severely uncomfortable and at times I even physically backed away from my phone because I desperately needed these strange men out of my personal space.
The concept isn't bad, actually. An anthology of people just talking with the viewer as if they were a person they know, just talking about what's going on in their life and their struggles, that's an amazing concept. It's like a puzzle, try to understand the person talking and what their deal is before the Vignette ends, for you will never see them again. An exploration of the human capacity for meta-empathy. With proper writing and sound design, this could be something. Too bad they went with weird af instead.
Theres actually another one of these where the viewer is supposed to be like a little kid and the boys are daycare teachers and give you headpats and tell you you're a good girl, this like an entire genre but somehow pillow boys' dead silence makes it weirder
Yeah, the The Helpful Fox Senko-san is a good example of the genre. A sorta chicken soup for the soul, cute and fluffy and pampering kind of thing. But dead silence combined with awkwardly predatory writing and awful translation on the subtitles makes what is already a flawed example into something outright troubling.

I really want to know how they messed up the budget so badly to not even have like one bgm track for this animated series. Like, maybe if it was just an audio track then the lack of bgm would make sense but the eery silence makes the series very uncomfortable to watch. Though your narration made this very entertaining and I agree with you that the oden stall guy is the best one if only because he fits most of my personal check boxes lol.
This made me wonder so I went to poke at it, and I think that the key is that the original concept might not have been a drama CD--those would often have at least SOME sound effects--but possibly primarily a mobile game. This fits better--you wouldn't have the background sounds so much because you'd be triggering new lines with actually tapping on the screen. Apps with like a picture of a boy and a set of voice lines are not uncommon, and something on your phone makes sense as a bedtime thing. I don't think the game did well; there's not much evidence of it anymore and it might never have had an English translation. But it does seem to have existed.
I haven't watched the video yet but I wanted to say, I was the exact right age, demographic and mental state for this show when it came out and I loved it so much but also one episode in particular always creep'd me out because I was thinking on the exact same wavelengths the show expected so the dudes responses were so God damn accurate I was just like 0-0 and that didn't happen with the other episodes XD
The whiplash of I emotions I experienced between my initial "oh what a cute sheep pillow!" to my "oh God I absolutely hate this" when the boy started talking was quite disorienting. Also the "we... Faint, I guess? New boy!" absolutely killed me

...It would be kinda interesting if there was another series like this, but the men are actually interesting, and through the series more and more clues are revealed through the men's breaks in character or momentary glimpses into what is actually going on. Turns out this is some STRANGE, sick game you have found yourself in. You are the "final boss" of this said game, and the challenge, oddly enough, is for the men thrown into the game with you to either lull you into a sleep...or die. It always ends with either you or them falling asleep. You have infinite lives... They do not. As you learn more, the true dread and _terror_ creeps in. These men are all innocent, thrown into this SICK freak show of a game for some super being's entertainment. And as each episode passes, you begin to root more and more for the men trying to lull you to sleep, _hoping_ they succeed and get to live another day. Maybe even, your character begins to act differently as well, even trying to cooperate with these "players in the game" and sleep. However, this being unfair, the being controlling all of this begins to pull a few strings of its own. The series is very slow at first, purposefully drawn out to weed out the unworthy. But slowly, the series gets more and more intense as you try to escape this cycle and free these poor men! At least ONE of them! You manage to break free from the cage of that false reality, dragging the man you were with in that episode along. However, you are, still in first person, caught easily by the strange, beyond understanding creature itself. The last couple minutes of the series are of the monster, viciously tearing you apart to inflict a slow, _excruciating_ death... All while listing the names of EVERY man who lost and _died._ The men IT claims YOU killed... And then... The screen slowly fades to black... "Sweet dreams" an unknown voice in the end credits whispers I now dub this nonexistent series: "Try To Sleep"
Someone needs to make this indie horror game. This sounds genuinely terrifying just from the description, I can only imagine what proper execution would look like.
6:40 made me feel a crushing sadness. Some of the people on this team creative project were (probably) trying hard to produce a decent bit of entertainment and then... late one night a few hours before they needed to air the anime, a producer who hadn't slept for three days made the call to release it like that.

This feels like watching cutscenes to a game who's producers are ridiculously copyright claim happy with the music. Like, there is so little context to them staring and talking at you. The "you may now swoon over these jpegs for the allotted 30 seconds of awkward silence" feel like there's a text bubble supposed to pop up and give you dialogue choices. This show feels like it's written by David Cage, a real Quantic Nightmare if you will.

I feel like this could had worked if the producers didn’t make such…. questionable decisions, so I’m going to take a crack at making this thing good, or just not insanely weir at least First of we are changing that opening, if this is trying to lull you to sleep we are choosing soothing and calm opening Second we are adding some sound effects, this not only adds to the asmr feel of this anime, but it also helps making things less creepy, now we get to the boys Merry: can we not make him a pervert? Thanks, in our version he is your childhood friend who is doing some massager courses and offers to give you a massage because he sees that you are very stiff and stressed, he rambles about his day a bit and listens to you complain about work. For sound effects I would put some fabric sounds and some skin on skin sound Tanaka: He is your boss who offered to take you home after he saw that you were a bit too drunk in an office party, you fell asleep not soon after getting in the car and awoke because he got a phone call, he offers you some tea and chats with you a bit. Hanamine: He is your partner and we are hanging out with him as he practices some scales, he tells you about his last concert while flirting with you. Sound effects would be violin scales and some steps on hard wood floor Kijinami: honestly? This one doesn’t need much change, just add some train noises in the background and that’s it Emori: Shy guy that invited you to stargaze as a first date, it gets cold after a while and you two end up sharing a blanket, he tells you some star trivia and talks about the mythology behind some constellations. For sound effects some fabric sound for the blanket and some crickets sounds should be enough Maki: not gona lie I kinda wanna leave this one in all of his 13 year old edge glory. Some fabric sound effects for his clothes and some distant chatter since you are in a high school Enokawa: OH BOY this one is gonna need some fixing, in our version he is your YOUNGER BROTHER, he saw that you are very tired because of a very long study session and offered to help you get some sleep, he makes a bed time story using his toys as the characters. The sound effects would be mainly for his toys and maybe some cicada sounds in the background Sasayama: A classmate and part time DJ who is inviting you to a party he is throwing. Some standard cafeteria background noise should suffice Mochizuki: The librarian of the local library, you ask him for some book recommendations, he takes a few books that he thinks you might like and talks to you a bit about each one of them. Sound effects would be paper noises for the books and fabric sound for his clothes The twins: Yeah I’m reworking these ones from the ground up. These are your twin butlers who came to your studio with an afternoon snack and to tidy the studio a bit. For sound effects mainly stepping sounds as they move around the room, and some varied noises as they move thing around for cleaning Iidia: This one is perfect 11/10. Add some cooking sounds and we are done Mini Merry: You are friends at your first sleepover, the dialogue probably can stay the same honestly. Ad some fabric sounds and we are good to go
I think this comment shows that, if the creators had made the episodes a bit longer and added some sounds (that you can probably get for free or very cheap somewhere, like how expensive could a cicada or train sounds possibly be?), this series would have been so much better. I watched these all in a row some years back, and I remember going 'Ah, okay, ah weird, ah GOD let that be a mistranslation, ah, cute I guess, ah, okay we'll talk to a therapist about this one' and then Oden Oji-san made me CRY. 'I DO work hard, Mr. Sexy Foodstand, and I WILL eat, chug, weep, and fall asleep all at the same time, thank you for your understanding.' This gave me the laughs I needed, many thanks.
If it is of any comfort, I think the ‘hot’ in ‘super energetic, hot 5-year-old’ probably is a direct translation to ‘atsui’ in Japanese, which can also refer to a person who is passionate, hot headed, basically someone with a lot of energy . [or atleast I’m hoping they meant it this way💀]
They didn’t unfortunately… I went to check and the word used to describe him is イケメン (ikemen), which is popular Japanese slang for a man that is physically attractive. I don’t know if you can say it in a plutonic way, but it’s pretty weird to describe a five year old like that anyway. Sorry if I’ve ruined what little faith in humanity remained lol. And please correct me if I’m wrong, I’m still learning Japanese and had to research the word :)
I played the violin for a couple years in my youth, so when I saw the violinist's bow touch his strings but didn't hear any music, my mind helpfully supplied the sound of an unrossined bow quietly scraping against strings (that's the non-music sound you hear when those things touch- it sounds exactly like nails on a chalkboard). I hate ASMR and thought "no background noise? That sounds great!" ...i was wrong.
Number 1: Naive kidnapper. Porbably was raised to believe keeping your loved ones hostage is normal. Chainsaw massacre kind of situation. Number 2: The PUA creep. When he's not working he just reads THE GAME for the thousandth time. You helped him once at work and took advantage of you getting drunk at a company party. He doesnt even think what he's doing is wrong. Number 3: Schizo kidnapper. Thinks he can play the violin with his mind and sees spiders everywhere from his Benadryl addiction. His hallucinations make him weak, and you manage to escape. Number 4: The only normal one. His barber just did him filthy. Number 5: Experienced killer. psycopath. Brought you to an isolated place and forces you to hear about his special interest as you bleed out. Number 6: Not a psycho, just the edgy, annoying emo boy. He caught you listwning to my chemical once, and now clings to you. Number 7: YOU are the psycho.
I haven't watched anything of yours in YEARS- but when i saw this in my recommendations i was fully expecting humor along the lines of "It's funny because its made for girls!" I am pleasantly surprised to be reminded of your hilarious commentary, but also horrified to find out how disgustingly bad Pillow Boys actually is. (I knew close to nothing about Pillow Boys until this video) It deserves to be made fun of. You made the uncomfortable parts of the show easier to swallow, while also being relatable, hilarious, and transparent. I've seen too much garbage online so i might be the only one thinking about it like this, but I just wanted you to know that I found this one extremely refreshing.
I genuinely *like* Jingai-san no Yome, even, but I also adored having all its weird bits compiled in a single place. This, I do not like the show, but also I'm glad for the focus mostly on the parts that would have been really fucking weird even in a better-made show. 100%, I really appreciate the ability to walk this line.

(Sorry if I sounded too harsh) As long as you understand the flaws of it and you wouldn't describe a child as "hot" you're fine. The media people consume doesn't always have to correlate with who they are as a person. I appreciate this vid a lot cause explaination point isn't judging any potential audiences of the show, and decides to keep the critique to the show itself. Which is nice because too often i hear stuff like "WHY DO PEOPLE WATCH THIS GARBAGE??" or "EVERYONE WHO LIKES THIS THING IS A [insert offensive term here]" It's refreshing seeing a comedic critique of the work itself rather than an aspect of society or a specific audience, if that makes sense.

My friend and I in high school stumbled upon this anime and did a 'try not to laugh' challenge with it. It wasn't that the show was funny in a comedic way, but it was so hard to not laugh at how uncomfortable the show was.
I remember as a teen I was tricked by a few AMV's into watching this anime and boy the horror it was to actually sit down and watch this on the TV I didn't make it pass episode 2
Amazing, flawless, masterpiece, not many shows can simulate being tied up by rambling serial killers while you wait for the chloroform to kick in, 10/10 I hated every second of it 👍
i watched this video so many times. I keep coming back to it. I just love the sheer horror and discomfort in every line. The way you just skip the child. The delivery of the jokes. Everything just tickles me in the right way. This and the Moumin Marriage video are just top notch content.
You know somehow I was thinking about how I have a Japan trip in a month and I should probably at least learn a few words in Japan. I I realize that I won't be able to speak proper Japanese but at least a few words and you've managed to sell me on Rosetta Stone in like 30 seconds.

I straight up bought this anime on DVD years ago simply because I was told it was weird and I wanted it in my collection. I went through an embarrassing amount of struggle to find it T.T
My favorite thing about pillow boys is that they have voice acting legends working on this. Nobunaga Shimazaki, Ayumu Murase, Natsuki Hanae, Toshiyuki Morikawa, Kosuke Toriumi, Yoshitsugu Matsuoka. It’s unreal to me that they’ve got all these famous VAs to voice a single 4 minute episode of a bad asmr trip.
Eh. It's not that surprising. Otome ASMR/situation CDs were all the rage in the drama CD scene in the late 2000s-early 2010s which I feel like this series also was originally. Plus the Drama CD scene is mostly made up of well known and up & coming male seiyuu, so a lot of situation CDs like this (& BL Dramas) were the bulk of their work at the time.
I used to watch a lot of otome anime with my friends. They are universally awful. You should check out Miracle Train, the one where the boys kidnap girls into their magical subway car and solve their problems with Train Facts.

This is usually used as a trick to indicate that a POV character is going into fight or flight because when we’re hyper-focused, irrelevant noise filters itself out of our hearing and we only hear the threat - and when you can only hear somebody speaking, that implies they’re saying things that are raising your blood pressure.
Especially when one of the guys is playing a freaking violin on screen

The concept isn't bad, actually.
An anthology of people just talking with the viewer as if they were a person they know, just talking about what's going on in their life and their struggles, that's an amazing concept. It's like a puzzle, try to understand the person talking and what their deal is before the Vignette ends, for you will never see them again. An exploration of the human capacity for meta-empathy. With proper writing and sound design, this could be something.

Yeah, the The Helpful Fox Senko-san is a good example of the genre. A sorta chicken soup for the soul, cute and fluffy and pampering kind of thing.
But dead silence combined with awkwardly predatory writing and awful translation on the subtitles makes what is already a flawed example into something outright troubling.

I really want to know how they messed up the budget so badly to not even have like one bgm track for this animated series. Like, maybe if it was just an audio track then the lack of bgm would make sense but the eery silence makes the series very uncomfortable to watch. Though your narration made this very entertaining and I agree with you that the oden stall guy is the best one if only because he fits most of my personal check boxes lol.

The oden one is the ONLY exception.
This made me wonder so I went to poke at it, and I think that the key is that the original concept might not have been a drama CD--those would often have at least SOME sound effects--but possibly primarily a mobile game. This fits better--you wouldn't have the background sounds so much because you'd be triggering new lines with actually tapping on the screen. Apps with like a picture of a boy and a set of voice lines are not uncommon, and something on your phone makes sense as a bedtime thing. I don't think the game did well; there's not much evidence of it anymore and it might never have had an English translation. But it does seem to have existed.

...It would be kinda interesting if there was another series like this, but the men are actually interesting, and through the series more and more clues are revealed through the men's breaks in character or momentary glimpses into what is actually going on. Turns out this is some STRANGE, sick game you have found yourself in. You are the "final boss" of this said game, and the challenge, oddly enough, is for the men thrown into the game with you to either lull you into a sleep...or die. It always ends with either you or them falling asleep. You have infinite lives... They do not. As you learn more, the true dread and _terror_ creeps in. These men are all innocent, thrown into this SICK freak show of a game for some super being's entertainment. And as each episode passes, you begin to root more and more for the men trying to lull you to sleep, _hoping_ they succeed and get to live another day. Maybe even, your character begins to act differently as well, even trying to cooperate with these "players in the game" and sleep. However, this being unfair, the being controlling all of this begins to pull a few strings of its own. The series is very slow at first, purposefully drawn out to weed out the unworthy. But slowly, the series gets more and more intense as you try to escape this cycle and free these poor men! At least ONE of them! You manage to break free from the cage of that false reality, dragging the man you were with in that episode along. However, you are, still in first person, caught easily by the strange, beyond understanding creature itself. The last couple minutes of the series are of the monster, viciously tearing you apart to inflict a slow, _excruciating_ death... All while listing the names of EVERY man who lost and _died._ The men IT claims YOU killed... And then... The screen slowly fades to black...
"Sweet dreams" an unknown voice in the end credits whispers
I now dub this nonexistent series: "Try To Sleep"

Some of the people on this team creative project were (probably) trying hard to produce a decent bit of entertainment and then... late one night a few hours before they needed to air the anime, a producer who hadn't slept for three days made the call to release it like that.

This feels like watching cutscenes to a game who's producers are ridiculously copyright claim happy with the music. Like, there is so little context to them staring and talking at you. The "you may now swoon over these jpegs for the allotted 30 seconds of awkward silence" feel like there's a text bubble supposed to pop up and give you dialogue choices. This show feels like it's written by David Cage, a real Quantic Nightmare if you will.
Needless to say, I had to tell everyone I know that there's a new one of these. This is so fucking weird and you are so good at presenting it to highlight just how fucking bizarre it is. I'm so happy you decided to do another one of these.

I feel like this could had worked if the producers didn’t make such…. questionable decisions, so I’m going to take a crack at making this thing good, or just not insanely weir at least
First of we are changing that opening, if this is trying to lull you to sleep we are choosing soothing and calm opening
Second we are adding some sound effects, this not only adds to the asmr feel of this anime, but it also helps making things less creepy, now we get to the boys
Merry: can we not make him a pervert? Thanks, in our version he is your childhood friend who is doing some massager courses and offers to give you a massage because he sees that you are very stiff and stressed, he rambles about his day a bit and listens to you complain about work. For sound effects I would put some fabric sounds and some skin on skin sound
Tanaka: He is your boss who offered to take you home after he saw that you were a bit too drunk in an office party, you fell asleep not soon after getting in the car and awoke because he got a phone call, he offers you some tea and chats with you a bit.
Hanamine: He is your partner and we are hanging out with him as he practices some scales, he tells you about his last concert while flirting with you. Sound effects would be violin scales and some steps on hard wood floor
Kijinami: honestly? This one doesn’t need much change, just add some train noises in the background and that’s it
Emori: Shy guy that invited you to stargaze as a first date, it gets cold after a while and you two end up sharing a blanket, he tells you some star trivia and talks about the mythology behind some constellations. For sound effects some fabric sound for the blanket and some crickets sounds should be enough
Maki: not gona lie I kinda wanna leave this one in all of his 13 year old edge glory. Some fabric sound effects for his clothes and some distant chatter since you are in a high school
Enokawa: OH BOY this one is gonna need some fixing, in our version he is your YOUNGER BROTHER, he saw that you are very tired because of a very long study session and offered to help you get some sleep, he makes a bed time story using his toys as the characters. The sound effects would be mainly for his toys and maybe some cicada sounds in the background
Sasayama: A classmate and part time DJ who is inviting you to a party he is throwing. Some standard cafeteria background noise should suffice
Mochizuki: The librarian of the local library, you ask him for some book recommendations, he takes a few books that he thinks you might like and talks to you a bit about each one of them. Sound effects would be paper noises for the books and fabric sound for his clothes
The twins: Yeah I’m reworking these ones from the ground up. These are your twin butlers who came to your studio with an afternoon snack and to tidy the studio a bit. For sound effects mainly stepping sounds as they move around the room, and some varied noises as they move thing around for cleaning
Iidia: This one is perfect 11/10. Add some cooking sounds and we are done
Mini Merry: You are friends at your first sleepover, the dialogue probably can stay the same honestly. Ad some fabric sounds and we are good to go
I think this comment shows that, if the creators had made the episodes a bit longer and added some sounds (that you can probably get for free or very cheap somewhere, like how expensive could a cicada or train sounds possibly be?), this series would have been so much better. I really like your suggestions. I especially like the idea for the lil brother, it sounds really cute.

If it is of any comfort, I think the ‘hot’ in ‘super energetic, hot 5-year-old’ probably is a direct translation to ‘atsui’ in Japanese, which can also refer to a person who is passionate, hot headed, basically someone with a lot of energy .

They didn’t unfortunately… I went to check and the word used to describe him is イケメン (ikemen), which is popular Japanese slang for a man that is physically attractive. I don’t know if you can say it in a plutonic way, but it’s pretty weird to describe a five year old like that anyway. Sorry if I’ve ruined what little faith in humanity remained lol. And please correct me if I’m wrong, I’m still learning Japanese and had to research the word :)
I played the violin for a couple years in my youth, so when I saw the violinist's bow touch his strings but didn't hear any music, my mind helpfully supplied the sound of an unrossined bow quietly scraping against strings (that's the non-music sound you hear when those things touch- it sounds exactly like nails on a chalkboard).

I am pleasantly surprised to be reminded of your hilarious commentary, but also horrified to find out how disgustingly bad Pillow Boys actually is. (I knew close to nothing about Pillow Boys until this video) It deserves to be made fun of.
You made the uncomfortable parts of the show easier to swallow, while also being relatable, hilarious, and transparent.
I've seen too much garbage online so i might be the only one thinking about it like this, but I just wanted you to know that I found this one extremely refreshing.
I genuinely *like* Jingai-san no Yome, even, but I also adored having all its weird bits compiled in a single place. This, I do not like the show, but also I'm glad for the focus mostly on the parts that would have been really fucking weird even in a better-made show. 100%, I really appreciate the ability to walk this line.

As long as you understand the flaws of it and you wouldn't describe a child as "hot" you're fine. The media people consume doesn't always have to correlate with who they are as a person.
I appreciate this vid a lot cause explaination point isn't judging any potential audiences of the show, and decides to keep the critique to the show itself. Which is nice because too often i hear stuff like "WHY DO PEOPLE WATCH THIS GARBAGE??" or "EVERYONE WHO LIKES THIS THING IS A [insert offensive term here]"

My friend and I in high school stumbled upon this anime and did a 'try not to laugh' challenge with it. It wasn't that the show was funny in a comedic way, but it was so hard to not laugh at how uncomfortable the show was.

Amazing, flawless, masterpiece, not many shows can simulate being tied up by rambling serial killers while you wait for the chloroform to kick in, 10/10 I hated every second of it 👍
i watched this video so many times. I keep coming back to it. I just love the sheer horror and discomfort in every line. The way you just skip the child. The delivery of the jokes. Everything just tickles me in the right way. This and the Moumin Marriage video are just top notch content.

I straight up bought this anime on DVD years ago simply because I was told it was weird and I wanted it in my collection. I went through an embarrassing amount of struggle to find it T.T
My favorite thing about pillow boys is that they have voice acting legends working on this. Nobunaga Shimazaki, Ayumu Murase, Natsuki Hanae, Toshiyuki Morikawa, Kosuke Toriumi, Yoshitsugu Matsuoka. It’s unreal to me that they’ve got all these famous VAs to voice a single 4 minute episode of a bad asmr trip.
Eh. It's not that surprising. Otome ASMR/situation CDs were all the rage in the drama CD scene in the late 2000s-early 2010s which I feel like this series also was originally. Plus the Drama CD scene is mostly made up of well known and up & coming male seiyuu, so a lot of situation CDs like this (& BL Dramas) were the bulk of their work at the time.
I used to watch a lot of otome anime with my friends. They are universally awful. You should check out Miracle Train, the one where the boys kidnap girls into their magical subway car and solve their problems with Train Facts.
Wait, I think get to know about train facts is cool. And man, I just don't know which one is more universally awful, watching a creepy and _certainly_ not predatory otome anime or watching another cliche isekai anime with lolis harem
