Love this song! Back when MTV was about music, we learned he wrote it about being with his wife at an awards show party. He won an award for "Don't Pay the Ferryman" 🎧 💓 🎶
It was written down during one of your live broadcasts. Yes, I suggested him. Drum machines were big in the 80s. Many listeners miss the point of this song - it is about a man who looks at his wife with new eyes, seeing the beauty that he had taken for granted. In addition to this quintessential love song, he has done many more during his long career (he is still recording). His breakthrough album was "The Spanish Train and Other Stories", and every song on that one told a wonderful story. The Spanish concerns a poker game between The Lord and The Devil, A Space Man Came Traveling looks at the nativity - all of those stories were wonderful ones. That was his best 70s album. From the 80s, Don't Pay the Ferryman and many others. Transmission Ends, Crusader. The Girl With April in Her Eyes. Last Night. The Leader (a three part song). More recently: The Snows of New York. the linked songs "When Winter Comes" / "The Road to Freedom" / "Snow Is Falling" from The Storyman album. The concept album "Moonfleet & Other Stories" - adapting a novel to song. His most recent album is The Legend of Robin Hood (released in 2021). Speaking of The Legend of Robin Hood, Chris de Burgh is touring Canada to support it. Yes, I already have my ticket. As others have said, The Lady in Red became an overplayed love song. For about a decade it was played at weddings when the bridal couple danced. Most of his other songs are far deeper. Personally I thought this was the weakest song on that album, but it generated a huge number of sales.
I was lucky to finally see him in concert several years ago. (Lifelong fan. Got all his music). This song is a must for him to do in concert. When he sang it all the ladies who wore red dresses (so many red dresses) got up to dance. He came down from the stage moved through the audience serenading all the ladies in red he passed.
Definitely agree with "Don't Pay The Ferryman" Great song with really cool ominous lyrics that are almost begging to be read with your creepy old timey Brittish horror story voice! Lol You'll like that one.
Love this artist. Many comments mention "Don't Pay the Ferryman" which incidentally was the first time I heard this guys music and immediately bought the album it was on.....However, this album with Lady in Red has an incredible Prog Rock Track !!!!! in 3 parts known as "The Leader Trilogy" on u.t. On the album it's - "The Leader/ The Vision / What about me " ? It is one track ! and is stunning !!!!! An absolute must if you like Prog Rock. Miss this one at your peril - It's a hidden Gem in rock music.
My favorite De Burgh are form the album The Getaway. "Ship to Shore," "The Getaway," and "Borderline," are all outstanding. Most people, of course, will mention "Don't Pay the Ferryman," but it's several steps down my list.
Don't Pay the Ferryman should have been your first song by Chris De Burgh. This song came out after, but was his biggest song. It reached number one on the UK charts, but only reach number 25 in the US. However; Don't Pay the Ferryman only reached 30 UK, and 43 US.
@@huskytully3887 Sometimes noting the chart positions of songs is interesting trivial on the side? However I take your point, especially when I remember we have had UK # 1s such as Star Trekkin' and The Chicken Song. Yikes!
Omg now I nearly cry, long time sence I heard this beauty song. The most romantic…..ohh I remember all the dancing, all the kissing the look eye to eye omg the 80’s ♥️♥️♥️💋💋💋 thank you so very much for this song, one of my higligths from the wonderful 80’s 💃🏼💃🏼
A song close to my heart. A girl that I thought was "the one"- this was our song. Kinda' sappy, but when you are in love, that is exactly what you need.
It's a pretty song. For a much better song with similar sentiments you should play Eric Clapton's Wonderful Tonight, about his wife Pattie Boyd (who was previously married to George Harrison - but that's another story).
I remember the song but I can't really place it. Probably one of the songs that would have played at young adults dances I would have gone to at that time.
Never ever imagined to see you reacting to this song, of all songs! lol oh dear, oh well, never mind ..... Have to agree with the negative comments, whenever they put together 'worse songs of all time' TV shows here in the UK, this is guaranteed to be near the top. :) Surprised the Legion recommended this one, as Chris De Burgh has an extensive catalogue both before and after this ... errr 'classic'? ... and he has done some very good songs. To his credit he does write his own compositions, and is a superb live singer. This may be his biggest commercial hit, however it is not his best song nor reflective of his whole career. Best Wishes, Ian
When I heard this song for the first time, I liked it so much that I decided to make an equirithmic translation of it so that I could sing it in Russian too. And I love singing very much - my neighbors were unlucky :)))
I'm a big CDB fan. I do NOT have this song on my place list. Everything pre LIR is good - artsy, avant-garde and progressive. Best albums - Spanish Train and The Getaway.
I thought De Burgh was a city in Pennsylvania. 😁 I always thought that this was the downfall of pop music in the 80s....heavy synthesizers, electronic drum kits, over production in the studio. This song sounds like so many from that era that it doesn't stand out to me. In fact, whenever I hear "The Lady in Red", I think of A) The movie by the same name from 1979 starring one of my many adolescent crushes, Pamela Sue Martin, and B) "The Woman in Red" from 1984 starring Gene Wilder, Gilda Radner and Kelly LeBrock.
I have always loved this song 😍😍, if you get chance there is another song he did called Don't look back. Please could you react to that song pretty please 😁
This is probably my least favorite Chris DeBurgh song but I'm not fond of love songs/ballads. Spanish Train album is fantastic. Some great storytelling on that one.
Err no that is often the perception with this artist, however for example three years later his ballad 'Missing You' (which I rate higher than this song) reached UK #3 and Ireland #1. He was more an album artist seller.
I concur with this extensive commentary. He’s an excellent songwriter, singer and storyteller. Given the season, you should react to “A Spaceman Came Traveling”
I loved it when it came out, but I don't listen to it now. Some songs don't leave their time period as well as others do. One of the greatest, most fun songs of the era was Frankie Goes To Hollywood's song, Relax. Just pass on watching the video, tho, because one of the two videos now out there is set in a gay club and it totaly will distract you from a first listen to the song. (But don't let that dissuade you from the song.) The producer is quite famous and produced for some famous people in music. For instance for Seal, Tina Turner.
Good shout, although I soo want to see Daniel's face reaction at certain points in that video ... lol I'm sure you know the one bit I mean! The Power Of Love would be a fine song to react to at this time of year too.
No my first or even 5th choice of Chris DeBurgh songs. Most people I know first heard Chris when he did "Spanish Train". LIR is a basic pop love song. Nice but nothing that caught my attention.
Perhaps his new gf likes to wear red? :) But yes have to agree, quite a few Chris De Burgh ballads are better than this one ... especially Missing You.
Truly one of the worst dirges of the eighties and unavoidable if you were living in the UK or Ireland at the time. From the sublime (Stevie Wonder) to the ridiculous. Never mind, we have to take the rough with the smooth.
Yes, I remember being about 12 when this got to number 1 in the UK; and watching him on Top Of The Tops. lol cringey and he just looked ill at ease as he mimed away. Perhaps he was thinking 'I've done many better songs, but it is this one that gets me on this show!?!?" :)
Also unavoidable if you grew up in Germany. For a while in the 1980s, it felt Chris DeBurgh had a contract to appear in EVERY Saturday evening TV show to perform...."Lady in Red". Not my kind of pop music.
"Don't Pay The Ferryman", a little earlier real rocker by him, I believe his best single.
Love this song! Back when MTV was about music, we learned he wrote it about being with his wife at an awards show party.
He won an award for "Don't Pay the Ferryman" 🎧 💓 🎶
A song of pure adoration for someone. Simply beautiful.

Spanish train by Chris de Burgh is very different. Would love to see you react to this one
I was lucky to finally see him in concert several years ago. (Lifelong fan. Got all his music). This song is a must for him to do in concert. "In a Country Churchyard" is another fave
My god Daniel........thank you. Your smile just helped me through so much tonight!!
Check out his song “Don’t pay the ferryman”. Great tune.
Man, I haven't heard this in a long time. A fine voice.
Love this artist. I think you'd find "Spanish Train" most interesting lyrically. I know you like songs that tell a story, and this is definitely one of those.
Daniel.. you have to listen to the album "Spanish Train" and later " Crusader "...this is a talent that needs to be on this type of site. Trust me :)
"Crusader" is really awsome.
Yes to Both
Like everyone else said, you will love Don't Pay The Ferryman. Much more up your street, I think.
Chris is the legend for all decades.
I always loved the guitar and percussion in this song.
I won tickets to his show along with The Box.. i luv how he told stories before his songs, he's very good at it! Had a wonderful time =)

Do you really rate the quality of a song according to its position in the charts ?! 😒
@@huskytully3887 Sometimes noting the chart positions of songs is interesting trivial on the side? However I take your point, especially when I remember we have had UK # 1s such as Star Trekkin' and The Chicken Song. Yikes!
Every time I hear this song now, all I see is Tape Face
Oh and by the way the Title track from Spanish Train is a story of a battle between the Lord and the devil for lost souls ! You'll love it .
An excellent songwriter, singer and storyteller. As others have suggested, his early album, The Spanish Train and Other Stories,
…offer some great stories/ballads. Given the season, you might wish to react to “A Spaceman Came Traveling”. 👍🏼from Canada…
My wife will always make me dance with her when this song gets played at a wedding
Love it - a Classic - Thanks for the play.
Finally a reaction to this gentleman. Great catalogue of songs. Spain isn Train is a Austin Listen
A song close to my heart. A girl that I thought was "the one"- this was our song. Kinda' sappy, but when you are in love, that is exactly what you need.
This song is way harder to sing than you think. Still love it after all these years. 😊
Good memories.
I remember this song but couldn't have told you who the artist was. Always great to learn more about the artist.
My always Favourites from Chris de Burgh were the not so mainstream Songs like Crusader, A Spaceman came Travelling and Spanish Train...
It's a pretty song. For a much better song with similar sentiments you should play Eric Clapton's Wonderful Tonight, about his wife Pattie Boyd (who was previously married to George Harrison - but that's another story).
Counting on You, is a song I still listen to today, unfortunately its relevance is even more acute today, beautiful song.
I remember the song but I can't really place it. Probably one of the songs that would have played at young adults dances I would have gone to at that time.
Beautiful song. Was a #1 record here in Canada ♥️🎼🎶🎵🇨🇦
It's beyond salvation, and should be held to account. The musical equivalent of ten sugars in your morning tea! 🤮
So much more to Chris deBurgh try Shine On or The Leader.
Never ever imagined to see you reacting to this song, of all songs! lol oh dear, oh well, never mind .....

Stop beating about the bush. This is complete shit!
@@Katehowe3010 lol ! Bit short and to the point, but ok love your honesty. :)

I like the song his Ballroom of Romance I think it's that name but it's" on same album, I'm gonna look it up and see if any reactions to it

I haven't heard this in years.
Please, please, please, do ANY song off "Spanish Train and Other Stories'.
This is probably my least favorite Chris DeBurgh song but I'm not fond of love songs/ballads. Spanish Train album is fantastic. Some great storytelling on that one.
A one hit wonder but a #1 hit!
Err no that is often the perception with this artist, however for example three years later his ballad 'Missing You' (which I rate higher than this song) reached UK #3 and Ireland #1.

The entire Into The Light album that this song is from is good. You should give it a listen.

And maybe "Two tribes" by Frankie goes to Hollywood for historical perspective on Cold War in its final stages.

I actively hate this song lol
The blocking really must stop, it’s beyond absurd. Great reaction to this 80s smoocher. Maybe try “one thing leads to Another” by the Fixx
I would appreciate if you could react to this singer Cakra Khan cover Tennessee whiskey…hope you like it..tq❤️
I think this was a bit of a joke for serious listeners in the 1970s.
Check his late 70's and early 80's songs..this song is good but kinda cheesy..does not reflect what his songs are,,,
Crusader !
