    How long would it take you to master a new language? A year? 18 months? Longer? For a special operator in the elite Navy SEAL Team 6 it used to take six months of study, but thanks to a combination of physiological and neurological optimization, it’s now down to six weeks -then they’re off in a foreign country navigating the cultural terrain, and engaging with locals and allies. High-performance expert Jamie Wheal spent time at ”The Mind Gym’, the Navy SEAL training facility, while researching his new book in collaboration with Steven Kotler, Stealing Fire. Here he gives us just a taste of the advantageous technology that is cracking open seemingly super-human skills like accelerated learning, and raising the bar of human performance. Jamie Wheal and Steven Kotler’s book is Stealing Fire: How Silicon Valley, the Navy SEALs, and Maverick Scientists Are Revolutionizing the Way We Live and Work
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    JAMIE WHEAL:
    Jamie Wheal is the author of the global best-seller and Pulitzer Prize-nominated Stealing Fire: How Silicon Valley, Navy SEALs and Maverick Scientists are Revolutionizing the Way We Live and Work and the founder of the Flow Genome Project, an international organization dedicated to the research and training of ultimate human performance. Since founding the organization in 2011, it has gone on to become the leading voice of evidence-based peak performance in the world, counting award-winning academics, legendary professional athletes, special operations commanders, and Fortune 500 business leaders among the hundreds of thousands of people in its global community.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    TRANSCRIPT:
    Out of all the organizations we’ve studied the Navy SEALs are probably right there on the cutting edge of deploying advanced technology to accelerate their performance in the field and to accelerate their performance in forming and leading teams. There are probably three major areas in their bodies and brains they focus on. The first is neural electric activity, so what is happening in our brain wave states as we go into stressful situations, our heart rate and the quality of our cardiac rhythms, so not just how many beats a minute are our hearts beating under stress but literally what is the quality? Is it anabolic meaning and healthy and positive or catabolic meaning unhealthy and destructive in my cardiac rhythm. And then even galvanic skin response so how much is my system under stress or strain and sweating kind of the same metrics that are used in lie detector tests, polygraphs and those kind of things. And they actually have very robust vests filled with sensors that will allow teams to go through operations and have commanders being able to see on a laptop up to 50 operators at once and being able to monitor all of their activities in the field, see who’s fallen down, see what their core body temperature is, see a host of biometrics.
    In their mind gym, which is unique and specific to DEVGRU, which is more popularly known as SEAL Team Six, but their official name is Special Warfare Development Group, those guys also have an entire center built called the Mind Gym and it’s dedicated to deeper dives for training and recovery. And amidst all the other tools that we’ve just discussed they are also making use of sensory deprivation as a recovery and learning aid. And sensory deprivation tanks, which are usually they look like giant egg shaped pods and they’re filled with basically lukewarm super salty bathwater that’s very, very buoyant. So you go into them and close the hatch and you’re floating in pitch-black darkness with no reference points. And these have been used for the last half century to research consciousness because one of the ways we determine who we are and where we are is by understanding visual sidelines and what’s in our environment. When you take that away you take away one of the core elements of orienting where am I and who am I in time and space.
    What DEVGRU is doing now is they’re adding in 21st century biometrics into that experience. And so they are adding audio and visual feedback as well as biometrics. So again, brain waves and heart rate variability and they’re able to steer operators into an optimum state of physiological and neurological relaxation and then introducing new content. And one of the examples that they shared with us was the learning of foreign languages. So obviously special operators are special operators. They are highly trained and there aren’t enough of them to go around when the U.S. is engaged in overt and covert...

    This is awesome. I see so many negative comments about him not saying anything or that they didn't learn anything. Cracks me up. For people that dont understand the importance of mental states and our ability to learn how to control them, its confusing. At home this is practical and applicable through a muse headband which i got for only like $200 and sensory deprivation tanks are becoming more widely available to anyone. Theres even places in my area to get a free session. There are also places that measure brain waves for a drop in fee and help you optimize your brain waves. Simply put, they help you calm your mind down OR perhaps stimulate your mind more to focus. You learn how to find that sweet spot, that flow state, the zone and you can use that to learn way faster. However, without it you can still gain self awareness and meditate and teach your body and brain to either amp or rev down as needed to produce an optimal state of mind for learning. The future tech is cool but dudes like Edison and Walter Russell and Einstein already knew this and practiced finding this place and "connecting to infinite intelligence", even. So much to learn here but you gotta do the work...not watch a video and expect a simple answer. Its pointing you in the right direction.

      Agreed. People should be more specific about what they mean by 'learn'. I only know about English, but from my experience after 5 years, I can say that you can't know as much as a native if you don't move to the country where the language is spoken. (Though it was never my goal to learn English. It just happened for several reasons, including me being around native speakers.)

      He explained it perfectly. Certain mental states make us more conducive to learning. It's not so much what is being taught to us but how distracted our minds are from the input being received. Emotions, fears, past traumas make learning new skills far more difficult and time consuming than if we had them under control. Biofeedback and sensory deprivation are ways to reach a mental state that is free from distraction making learning way easier. I've tried both and can say this is very true You'd really have to experience it to understand.

      ***** i've had dozens of neurofeedback sessions for adhd and depression. There are many protocols depending on the client but the overall mechanism for adhd involves increasing beta waves and inhibiting theta waves in certain areas of the brain, ie the prefrontal cortex, via placing electrodes on these areas and controlling a video game. The inhibition of theta, dominant during REM sleep and daydreaming, is just as important as increasing beta, dominant during intense focus, because theta-based thought patterns make concentration way harder.

    • @daggawagga
      @daggawagga 7 років тому

    All the comments saying it's bogus -- well, he never said how good they learned the language, only that they did reach a minimal level required to communicate with local civilians and allies. The level of vocabulary needed for that is much, much lower than for normal people planning to move there.

    • @nojentinhodosingleplayer3170
      @nojentinhodosingleplayer3170 2 роки тому

      Bingo. It's extremely unlikely that they acquire sufficient vocabulary and get enough exposure to the language to be able to communicate at an intermediate or upper intermediate level. However, it's certainly possible to reach an advanced beginner level, or even a pre-intermediate level in a short period of time.

      well, this forum is due to lack of space and time not the proper location to answer you´re really qualified questions. However, to put it in a nutshell: like hypnosis tries to outwit the "gatekeeper" = our ever active mind = thought chatter, deprivation offers best chance for a maximum in relaxation and calming down the thought patterns (in which in daily live at least 60% are repetitive anyway). Feeling at ease and yet not sleepy makes your subconsious mind wide open for taking in all kinds of knowledge in almost no time without any stress, which is contraproductive for any learning.

    Physiological and neurological optimization obviously helps, but this whole "learning a complete foreign language in 6 weeks" BS is just another inflated military story. Seals are different. They aren't going to make that claim without being able to prove it. Seals are already multi lingual and usually have many educational and genetic advantages for this kind of training. Sensory deprivation and/or meditation will help most people learn, but don't expect any miracles.
      Edit: Genetic advantages include better eyesight and hearing. Learning by observation instead of doing and raw determination may also be genetic and are definitely valued when screening for the Seal program.

    How can a heart rate be anabolic or catabolic? This makes no sense.

    • @masterkeep
      @masterkeep 7 років тому

      Notice he said quality of the heart rate. So not just the rate but the effectiveness of the contractions are considered. If you have so high a rate that contractility is compromised you are in a catabolic state. Even at a higher rate if you maintain good contractions you could still be in an anabolic state - building up. At the lowest level that is why they discuss maximum heart rate for training.

      hetane download Duolingo. Do at least an hour a day, every day for 6 weeks. Be proactive. Think of sentences you'd like to say and use google translate to see them in your new language. You should be become at least partially fluent

      @@davecom3 You´re right ! As soon as you start "dreaming" in the former foreign language you have almost made it. NEVER ever limit yourself in your mind as most of commentaries show. And that is only ONE corner stone of Neva Seals, DELTA-Teams and other elite: never limiting yourself as FAITH moves mountains ! Nothing is impossible, EVERYTHING (inventions, great discoveries, technical devices etc.) starts in an open mind! Get yourself in an alpha-mind-wave-state = relaxed and yet awake without any tension ( aka "mindflow") and all you have to learn comes and sticks in much easier. Just TRY IT !

    Who is the best?....
    Dem is using what Britain has done for decades.
    Thats why the US HAVE to ask UK to help them or do their job.
