NEW Canyon Ultimate | EVERY Update Explained + 1st Ride Review
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 сер 2024
- Canyon has finally launched the latest, fifth-generation of its Ultimate road race bike, and it’s evolution, rather than revolution for the German direct-to-consumer brand.
In fact, unless you look closely, we wouldn’t blame you for struggling to spot the difference versus the old one, but Canyon has been hard at work optimising the platform to bring it bang up to date.
In this video we are going to give you all the key details that you need to know about the latest model of the Canyon Ultimate AND Ash Quinlan will give you his ride report from the global launch.
So, what’s new? Well, quite a lot actually. Although it looks very similar to the previous generation, Canyon has again teamed up with aero specialists Swiss Side to give the entire frame an aero polish that saves a claimed 5 watts of drag at 45kph with a rider aboard.
What do you think of the new Canyon Ultimate? Has Canyon created a great all rounder, or were you hoping for more radical changes? Let us know in the comments!
We’ll be getting the Ultimate CFR in for testing in the coming weeks, and you’ll be able to catch that full review on BikeRadar.com. Let us know in the comments if you’d like to see a full video review too!

What do you think of the new Canyon Ultimate? Has Canyon created a great all rounder, or were you hoping for more radical changes? Let us know in the comments!
In the video you say that a size Large means a 56cm size. I guess this is wrong. As far as I know Medium is 56 and Large is 58cm.
No all rounder comes with TT tyres lol
@@kallewirsch7915 an L has a 540mm seat-tube length. So it's totally bs, since the seat-post is only 316mm long. With a min-insert an L will be more like a small M. Like what't the most seat-height you can get out of that: 780mm! That's nothing for an L.
@@pl4free Don´t get your point. When I compare top tube length and sjuggested sizes of the rider, then M means 56 at other brands. L starts for riders between 184 and 190cm. This is not 56cm frame size.
@@kallewirsch7915 but that is bs from Canyon. It's a simple calculation: according to Canyon themselves the L size of the new Ultimate has a sea-tube-lenght of 540mm and a sea-post of total 316mm. So 540 + 316 - minimum insert =?! Just calculate the maximum seat-height you could have, not the one Canyon estimates and then think: for someone who is 1,88, like I am, what's the typica seat-height. Mor ethan 810mm, I can tell you that. And you'll never get that with an L, or any other bike with a 540mm seat-tube. Unless it's a MTB and you have 400mm seat-posts
5 watts at 45kmph? I feel like I could get better savings by pruning my eyebrows.
Just got the rim Ultimate Cf Sl ,my first Canyon & love it,got it on the closeout ,have 10 other bikes ,great riding bike ,climbs well & great on the flats,HIGHLY recommend.
Full review with the deep carbon wheelset please !
Exactly what I would purchase (Ultimate SL8 Aero).
Thanks in advance !
Thanks for the review. I would also be interested to get your impressions on the cheaper (regular man/woman) versions CF SL 7 & 8 of the bike.
Like this guys review
Selling same bike but taking the opportunity to raise the price while adding more proprietary parts. Good luck walking in a bike store with this b2c bike, wanting them to change your handlebar.
U knew that when u bought it….so why even comment?? Its a cool bike and not a superb offer still holds its own against more expensive brands
I ordered the SL 7 eTap version and despite the rising prices (500€ more expensive than the 4th gen for the exact same spec), my main concern is the wheel choice. It is supposed to be their climbing bike and all of the versions that are more expensive than mine got aero wheels (50 mm deep) which is non sense for me. If I wanted an aero bike, I would have bought the aeroad !
More and more marketing bullshit... 5 watts more aero, 85858% more stiff 94959% more aero 858858% comfortable blablabla
Come on be serious
Looking to pick up an Endurace 8 Disc XL as my first road bike. It will be nice to explore my new neighborhood and get in shape at the same time. It will also be a fun comparison to my YT Capra that I use for downhill. Great video!
Not a bad choice. I have an Endurace 8 SL and my son has an Endurace 8 disk. The Endurace 8 Disk is his first road bike, as he is moving up from a bike. He can outride me, but he is a lot younger and stronger than I am. The Endurace is fully capable of century rides without body aches. Have fun.
@@alyoshakaramazov8469 Awesome! That sounds like exactly what I am looking for. Really hope Canyon gets some stock soon, that blue is amazing I just have to wait for an XL.
@BikeRadar.... While it is a nice bike, I don't like propritary stems, handle bars and seat posts as it limits your options if their is a recall on those items, or if you want to upgrade, or should you want sell your bike. Also Canyons colorway while nice doesn't exactly set the world on fire.
Agreed, proprietary cockpits are a nightmare for fit adjustment and almost certainly redundant when on selling.
But which brand isn’t going propriety for upper end models these days ?
And I’ve done 25,000km on my previous version Ultimate CF SLX - it had fewer proprietary however there has been no need to change anything in that time (what’s to upgrade when it’s already near peak spec) so proprietary wouldn’t have been an issue. But there’s lots of DIY cyclists out there and it seems no matter which brand you go these days, those people have limited choices
If you don’t want proprietary, then how are you going to steer? I guess we could clamp on some Vice grips. This cockpit is amazing and CLEAN!
Change of subject…However, Canyon has significant issues with frames cracking right now. It may be for the frames made during the Covid timeframe. There are some amazing amounts per some blogs and sites. I’ll find out after they replace mine if a proper made frame can last more than 3000 miles in 6 months. It’s been with Canyon for 4 weeks, and they state 6-8 weeks for a determination. I would say a 6 month old bike without a crash or a scratch…Should be a 5 minute job. So, bought a Pinarello in the meantime and have 2400 mile on it. I am not super happy with Canyon about this situation.
Any chance youd review the latest Cube Agree in the future?
Is there any point in upgrading from the 2017 model I wonder. The 4 watt saving is exciting. I can’t imagine the lengths their confirmation bias scientists spent coming up with that data. I truly can’t decide between upgrading my existing, ancient and soon to be redundant, Canyon Ultimate or saving a few thousand and buying a brand new Ducati Monster. With the money left over I could buy the 2019 Ultimate. Hmm, real dilemma.
is that something in your current bike that really bothers You?
I have a 2016 ultimate I think I’d be better off keeping it and buying an aeroad
After listening to my friend's story of being a canyon owner experience, I will not dare to buy a Canyon. Basically they have poor after sale service. The Canyon Aeroad range has a flawed design engineering concerning the seat post clamping method. It only has a single bolt and a very small surface clamping area. There are risky incidents where the seat post will suddenly slip. The Canyon team offered no real solution to that and neither offer to replace his bike.
Can you share test riders height for Large size frame? Thank you
He also says “Large 56 frame” but according to Canyon the medium is 56 and large is 58?
@@lionelhutz3170 brands like canyon only use letter sizing because most bikes today have sloping top tubes and therefore the 56,58, etc measurements aren’t accurate anymore
@@PaganiZondaF650hp but why does he say Large 56, when the effective top tube of the large is actually 58? Or do you think he is just using it as a comparable, because like you say it’s not standard old school sizing?
What size would be recommended for a 5'9" height?
Check the Canyon website. Medium.
S would work for that height but it also depends on leg length.
@@richardlee8467 I am the same height, had the S first, but it never really fit me well. Then I got a M, just fits me perfectly.
Bikes really all look the same now. SL7, Cannondale supersix, latest Scott, most recently the giant propel that looks merged with the TCR, then all the others, and the Chinese ones on top of that. Dengfu r12, workswell, velobuild, ican, winspace and so on. Pinarello dogma and trek domane still look different, but other than that, the differences between climbing bikes and aero bikes from one brand to the next really are anecdotal.
I mean, steel bikes all looked the same and nobody complained then. I do get you though. Ultimately, there's only one "most aero" frame shape, and each manufacturer is just trying to get as close as possible to that while staying within the UCI rules. It is what it is.
Form follows function…
Where is it aero? I only see the seat post. So a D shape seat post saves 5 watts? They should have also gave the head tube an aero shape for more watts savings.
I'd guess the 5W is all from the cockpit
It said 5W with the rider on, so for all we know the bike is less aero and the rider is assumed to wear closer fitting clothing? Those claims are never validated externally, and never consistent, because you can't save that many watts every year without fail, the bikes would be pedaling themselves by now.
@@pierrex3226 German magazine Tour is actually the only 3rd party I’m aware of that does aero testing.
@@IdolOracle The difference to the old cockpit is only hiding the cables, right? This never saves 5W. It saves maybe 1W.
When Canyon will deliver the bikes the people placed a order all ready
What country makes Canyon and who manufactures them
6:12 ..whats the brand of the backlight ? I like the strap solution 🙂
its also from Canyon
@@schmiki9911 Couldnt find it anywhere ?? Thx
Its not available in germany, because of stvzo
TT tyres on a road bike in order to save weight...
Welcome to 2022
can you mount the new cockpit to the older models?
you could with the previous generations cockpit, so I hope so. But you need to buy a spacer kit etc.
I guess no. The clamping is different. They don´t sell cockpits, only full bikes.
@@kallewirsch7915 they sell handlebars though, since its a completely new cockpit, they may just add it to the collection - also, what do you do if it goes bust?
@@blinzi69 Have you tried to buy one of these new adjustable handle bars for the Aeroad? Not possible to what all people in the internet wrote so far.
Crash replacement is another thing. We are talking about a purchase in another size, right?
If you intend to attempt to run integrated internal routing, this attempt is impossible.
It's a shame it's £1000 more than the 105 spec'ed Ultimate I bought not too many years ago, but that's nothing new
😎
Take a risk
SLX starting at £6349 is a non stater for me.
No, another 10k bike review. why not review the top end SL offering. 5k is still loads of money in the real world
Wish being the first comment got me an Ultimate
Ah, too bad you weren't the first comment!
What's so revolutionary about it, you can actually buy it? 😆
WOWWWW for a whopping £10,999.00 did i hear you correctly this equals a new car OR two and a half motor scooters OR a around the world air ticket ,What nutter would pay out this crazy sum for a pedal bike you need to earn a cool £ 30,000.00 before tax to buy this pedal bike what a wake up call .
Those paint options are awful
The cockpit is really terrible curve not really a compact drop
I'm like this bike, because I 'evolve' but I don't 'revolve'
The least exciting bike launch of the past 2 years, by a long shot. How spectacularly underwhelming.
Just meh.
Spent about 500 miles on it and so far so good. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA Pros:1. Very light2. Solid quality build3. Fast delivery: It arrived 5 weeks earlier than expected.4. Easy assemblyJust a few cons but nothing major:1. Cheap tin tubes and had flat on first day... but not a big deal. I replaced the tubes.2. Seat is a bit uncomfortable but that's pretty much the same situation with most bikes.3. Seat post is a bit long/high for a smaller size 48 bike - had to saw 2 inch off to fit properly. The lowest setting is too high. The post locking system does not seem to hold well (perhaps because I saw 2 inch off).4. wheels are not tubeless compatible (from what I can tell)
yawn
CANYON ---> the worst possible customer care. When buying their bike you have a 20% chance to get screwed in some way.
Underwhelming, extremely overpriced, ugly paintways, heavier... Lucky I bought mine last year at 7kg for just a bit north of 2k... Not possible anymore
Avoid buying anything German !
