- "When I signed up to the police my friends said, 'Why on earth are you joining a corrupt and racist organisation?'"
Neil Basu joined the police force as uniformed officer in 1992. He rose through the ranks to become an assistant commissioner of the Metropolitan Police in 2015, a role he held until 2021. Alongside this, he served as the UK's head of counter terrorism policing and Met assistant commissioner of specialist operations, working closely with MI5. During that time, he led investigations into 12 terror attacks, foiled 29 plots and charged three Russian state assassins in connection with the Salisbury Novichok poisonings.
In this rare and candid conversation, Neil doesn't hold back. He talks about the racism he's faced, the barriers he's had to break down and the tough leadership lessons he's learned throughout his career. But perhaps most powerfully, he explains why he firmly believes the Metropolitan Police is institutionally racist and why police chiefs must acknowledge it and apologise.
This episode is not suitable to those under 18 and contains sensitive topic discussions including racism and violence. If you are affected by anything you hear in this episode and need support, please see the suggested website links below.

Came to this having heard Neil Basu on your radio programme. Great interview - what an amazing man.
I'm so glad you actually followed up on this! Neil was so impressive on his radio show, can't wait to listen to this in full!
Fantastic interview. Neil’s words catapulted me back to a time when I had the desire to join the police. I waited for our school careers evening to meet a representative. There I was told by them it wasn’t for me - I wasn’t even allowed to take a leaflet from their table. That was 1979, SE London and a black child not fully appreciating systemic, institutional racism.
A superb interview, worthy of a wider circulation, if only Neil had said this whilst serving.
As a black police officer of the same age as Neil who served thirty years at the same time as Neil I never once heard him speak out in this way during my service. Nor did I come across him even when I became chair of the Black Police Association (in Greater Manchester) - sadly a great opportunity missed as our views and experiences seem as aligned.
I think thats very honest of you to say and like you i think this interview is great, and i saw an interview on channel 4 which was brilliant, but i get your obvious frustration.
Thank you. If you are interested in another narrative on the issues raised in this interview try 'I Did That' by Paul Bailey. The book reveals what happens when one challenges the establishment and the depths that the police will go in covering up corruption.
Read the reviews before you buy if uncertain.
Hi Paul. I clicked on your profile after reading your brilliant comment above. I noticed that you had replied to the comment with a mention of your book.
For some reason, that comment has been removed from view as I cannot see it in the main comment thread.
Either way, I'll be buying the book.
An excellent interview with an excellent guest!
Fascinating interview and Fascinating man! great interview James.
James lives in a million pound home James doesn’t deal with racism or concrete jungle gangs or crime …James daddy paid his school fees
Not all of us are hand picked to sit on our a$$es calling everyone else far right for the elite
James ain’t getting the workers stolen tools back I’m sure million pound postcodes have less crimes than James could ever experience
What a great bloke. I hope this government finds a place for him in cabinet.
Had the pleasure of meeting, very nice guy and humble. Fab interview
This was really interesting. I enjoyed hearing about Neil Basu's career. It would be terrific to have him back to go into more depth specifically about the recent riots, the role politicians and social media platforms play in stirring up division - which he briefly touched on a few days ago on James' show.
I am a British Muslim man in my fifties and can relate to all the racism that Neil Basu describes. I really feel Britain will not change until my generation dies off completely. I have hope in the younger generation, and when my children reach their fifties it will be a very different Britain. Until then I can't see much change.
i absolutely agree
maybe if the muslim youth start and respect the country they are in then your hopes may come true i hope so bu after recent events that the media have been helping the labour party to cover up i doubt it will become a reality

@@colinstevens6837That's deflection.
Thing is, in the US, this exact strain of racism exists and the same false narratives are spread ....about Hispanics.
This isn't about Muslim integration or culture. This is baseline bigotry that exists everywhere, no matter the ethnicity targeted.
It was one of the best interviews I have listened to. Well done!
discrimination ,violence, racism etc all come under the word bullying we need to really understand what dynamic causes people the urge to bully or be mean
Lack of real consequences and education is what these words mean. In this comment, for instance, people saying that racism is being rude or a banter is madness. tragedy and comical at the same time. Racism and bullying are not the same. Read history!!!
Neither of them ever done a hard days work in their lives!!!!!
@phillipliggins1549 Who ?
@@annaharvey8729 O'Brien or Basu - who did you think I was refering too?
@@mistycloud4455 I know a lot of London Jews that are regularly abused on the street, their children having had to be removed from regular state education due to increased racial bullying. These bullies aren’t the sort that James oB would readily admit to existing… goes against a simplistic narrative
It's all patriarchy. The ridiculous part is, that those running around fighting in the streets, are the lowest on every totem pole.
What an interesting interview. I got so much out of listening to this. Thank you.
All the best James. We truly appreciate your work.
Speak for yourself
@@jeffsimon9594then why are you here?
@@BeepBoos- just because you don’t like the interviewer doesn’t mean you can’t listen to the subject matter. Duh.
I wish I’d come across Neil during my 12 years of service. Getting to know the man, I may have stayed in the job.
What a great interview. And if possible I would love to hear more. Thank you for this interview.
Great guest, great insight, great interview. Thank you.
Mr. Basu came across as a very articulate individual. Also sensed that focus and awareness of his career path within the police was evident. A lot of us (me) don't really know what is out there for us to reach for.
Inspiring.
For young James, bullying may still be his disease but people who disagree with him are the symptom. Also, softly spoken bullies are often the cruellest because they believe they're being nice
Wow Neil is amazing. Great interview. Hope we see more from him.
@keezt. Thank you so much. I hope that you enjoy the book, your support is very much appreciated.
This system for some reason will not let me reply directly to your post - quite aggravating.
Thank you for your great service Sir...
Thoroughly enjoyed the interview
Much love James
Smart guy
Direct and clear and no hiding his hatred on racism and he is in my age group 👍🏾
Britian being the best place not to be white is quite depressing actually
This resonates with me so much.
I have had a parallel experience in my life which ended up in me emigrating to Australia.
I am British, but I have never, ever felt accepted being mixed race and aspiring.
I accepted that I was going to always have to "work twice as hard to go half as far" so I thought I'd go somewhere with consistent sunshine and warmth.
The real irony here is that I have been treated better in Australia as a "British Immigrant" that I was in the country of my birth!

I’ve heard Basu a few times and I think he’s nothing more than a race-grifter. Whatever his experiences, I don’t think he has anything important to say on modern British society. Everything for him seems to pivot around race & racism. Not interested.
Extraordinary official figures were published this week on the number of visas granted in the year to June 2024, in other words, up to a few days before the general election.
An astonishing 547,000 work-related visas were issued, 260,000 of which were for dependants. A massive 69% of them were to dependants of those coming to work in the Health and Social Care sector many of would be earning wages below the national average. A further 98,906 visas were family-related, an incredible 40% increase from the previous year. Meanwhile 75,000 visas were issued to those granted humanitarian protection; this figure increases to 93,342 when those granted leave to remain on humanitarian grounds are added.
Despite the government, seemingly, taking comfort from a modest reduction in overall numbers from the year before - largely because of measures (belatedly) introduced by the Tories, immigration is running at full throttle. And adding huge numbers to our population.

Nobody cares about this. What’s Basu’s analysis of the protests? Racism? Always is.
The U.K. is finished. We have a GDP per capita lower than Mississippi when excluding London. And yet, we still import third-world poverty by the hundreds of thousands.
I’m at the point in concluding there’s clearly something going on.

Racism is as old as time. People of one group have always frowned upon a different group. Don’t try and change what’s inherent in human nature.
Racism is wrong and no one is allowed to think that they are superior to another human being.
Nothing about human nature is to dehumanised another human being. Racism is not being unpolite, banter, etc. I came to realise that in British people actually do not know what racism is and consequences. Throughout history, the definition and the aims of racism are still the same but deliberately not so much what it means. If you know what it means it's easy to minimise.
The left know this but pretend that they do not because the R-word has power to shut down inconvenient discussions.
@@jeffsimon9594 inconvenient discussions?how the gammon culture has destroyed Africa,Asia an the ME and created the biggest refugee crisis in history?
Until people realise we all bleed the same colour. Racism will always exist unfortunately. Its a lot to comprehend for a lot of people. Humanity has no morals and nobody is willing to help each other. Media and propaganda play the biggest roles in this
I absolutely love Jame's melting ice cream posture. It actually, contrary to beliefs, makes me trust him a lot more, seeing how relaxed and attentive he is in that slouching position. Any other person with such an appearance would be a turn off but here I am saying that this turns me on. Gives a big huge smile on my face, James O'Briens level of comfort with his intellect and the respect he has for other's intellect. Superficiality < Intellectualism
