  • Stuart Beam Engine Refurbishment - Part #1 - This Stuart Beam Engine belonged to a friend of mine. He stored it in his "dry" cellar and it suffered from the effects of just being in a cellar and was starting to become rusty. I bought the engine from him and now I am refurbishing it. Also I intend to make a more attractive base for the engine as the one it currently sits on is a bit basic - and the steel plate on top of the baseboard is also rusty is also quite rusty...... Having grown up on a farm myself, it seems there were always engines under repair, or at least IC engines (I am not so old as we still used steam). But for years, I have used Scotch-brite pads for cleaning everything from cast iron cylinder heads to crankshaft staining. An excellent, low abrasive pad that has none of the drawbacks of steel wool, which tends to leave little steel fibers all over the place, which can damage the mechanism of any engine. It is an excellent product for these applications. I have never heard of anyone else using it though... Glad to see it utilized in the same way across the pond.

    Even in the house on a shelf I have had rust spots turn up on polished flywheels. The best thing I have found is a 20% solution of anhydrous lanolin in mineral spirits to prevent rust. I use it on all the machines and tooling in my little machine shop. It wipes off nicely with a rag, and is actually good for your skin if you get it on you.

    I was in a DIY shop in Cyprus recently and saw a sign saying ScotchBrite - so I thought I could stock up. But Scotchbrite is the brand name and including dozens of scourers, pan cleaners and brooms! I picked up what seemed likely - but not a broom!

    Surely it's not the tar protecting against the rust, but the fact that the engine was in a heated space in the living room, which would be less damp than an unheated space like a basement?

    There is a small detail which I feel I must mention. The brown staining from cigarette smoke is from the tar not nicotine.
    Sorry I don't normally feel the need to correct such minor details but nicotine has been given a very bad name over the years and most of it is unfounded and misinformation.
    That's a great looking little engine though and I'm really looking forward to seeing it being renovated !

    I liked the comment about 'nicotine' (actually cigarette tar) protecting against rust. I repair/restore vintage radios, & something similar happens there - while heavy smoker's sets stink when run & often have a lot of electrical issues due to tar deposits, the bakelite/plastic cabinets & chassis metal are often in very good nick under the brown coating.
    Cigarette tar seems to seal the surface & be remarkably stable. I susect a lot of radio restorers write off any brown sticky deposit as 'nicotine', when it's more probably a combination of the by-products of bakelite/plastic/polish degraded by other environmental contaminants like dust, cooking oil vapour, cleaners, etc.
    (Handy tip: soaking in a mild solution of water & Woolite/your local wool wash detergent is remarkably good for removing cigarette tar from paint & plastics, while not affecting most surfaces. Probably not a good choice for cast iron or mild steel though!)

      I found the same when I used to service & repair Hammond Organs in the Northern WorkingMen's Clubs. If I do any now, I use "Flash with bleach" to cut through the tar - that works very well.

      one line of narrative was incorrect . . . . . Watts Parallel Motion - initially I said Stephenson's link motion ..... if I don't re-upload to repair the error lots of viewers will tell me about it constantly .....

    • @keithappleton
      @keithappleton  6 років тому +5

      Most of the engines that I work on use Stephenson's Link - it was me just being on auto mode when I did the original narration .... I don't use a script - i just speak into the computer & make it up as I go along .....

    where do you find the dimensions for the "O" ring placement for steam?

    • @keithappleton
      @keithappleton  3 роки тому

      Usually from the data sheets of O ring sellers. Or by typing dimensions for the "O" ring placement into Google maybe . . .
