  • In this episode of New Knife Friday, I go into depth on the quality of the Gerber Versafix and have a little fun while doing it. I’m trying to find a Gerber blade that will redeem the Gerber Gator Machete.
This is the link to the knife I reviewed in this video👇

And a couple links to ones with holes in ‘em 😂😂👇👇

Enjoyed the review, well done, probably won't get the Versafix, but thanks for the video.

Thank you very much and you’re welcome! You sure you don’t want the one with holes in it?!😂

I completely dig your presentation style, torture test, and repair tutorial! Keep ‘em coming! Even if it’s on vintage equipment that you got laying around. Also, why is my Uncle Cletus chilling on your couch?!
My new mantra is going to be “If you don’t like it…SYM!”😂😂😂

My first " real knife " was a Gerber ripstop folder. Extremely sharp and easy to use altho a bit heavy for the size . I'd buy another one. I wouldn't buy this fixed blade tho.

I do have a TOPS storm vector for a reason ;)
No idea what the price difference is but I like a tool that I can trust, nothing Gerber makes is interesting for me. But I liked the review, thanks.

While searching for reviews of this one, I noticed a LOT of review videos showed various Gerber Machetes with rolled edges. Perhaps not entirely surprising that the Versafix was no exception. But as you pointed out, a softer temper with a roll can potentially be cold worked back into alignment, more or less, whereas a harder temper might just chip out.
A co-worker handed me his to sharpen this weekend, & I put something like a sabre-convex/scandi type edge on it. I think I'm going to recommend he use it for light duty work like clearing small brush & branches, saplings, batonning thin, straight grained kindling with no knots, etc... With this new grind, it's going to fly through stuff.
If someone wanted something Gerber-adjacent in a similar price range that can handle slightly heavier duties, I'd probably recommend they spend a couple more dollars on the Fiskars Brush Axe. After regrinding the bevel, mine has replaced much more expensive, heavy choppers as my go-to clearing/limbing tool.

So what did you use to sharpen the Versafix? I’ve been thinking about just working the primary bevel out with a file.

@@soloproject99 I did the bulk of the work with a coarse belt on a belt grinder (about 140-200 grit I think?), running the edge through a small heap of snow to cool it between passes (my usual dunk bucket was frozen solid!) then on to a series of diamond plates, ceramic bench stones, and finishing with a strop & green compound. If it was my own blade, I mighta been tempted to put a satin/near-mirror finish on the bevel like with my Fiskars brush axe, but the owner is not typically one who takes the most care with his tools.

@@CSGraves Nice!! I too sharpened a knife for a coworker this weekend and right about the time I got to the 8000 grit stone, I said, “what are you doing man?!” It was sharp at 1000 and this guy doesn’t even care!!😂😂

So it sucks at batoning and chopping through really hard wood. Looks like it might be great for reeds and stuff at the river but maybe the Gerber Bolo is better for self defense too idk

Gerber has lost there minds. You can't put baton jimping on a blade and not expect people to be beating around on it. Thank you for the review but I'm going to pass. My 10 dollar Tramotina could put that thing to shame.

It looked like you had to work really hard to chop that fatwood. Gerber sucks. I just gave away a Gerber pocket knife I had. Good riddance I say.
The old guy on the couch knows a thing or two.😉😂
