I am now a retired landscape maintenance contractor in Oregon. Over the yeas I have had great success in reducing size of overgrown garden Mugo Pines. Most contractors just top them with hedge shears. I found using hand pruners was faster and more precise. Mugo pines have epicormic buds and back bud very easy even on very old wood. That permitted me to reduce the size of overgrown trees and keep them attritive to my customers, In my bonsai yard I have a small Mugo pine that I am working on. I tend to go slow in creating my bonsais.
What an amazing transformation! Still a ways to go , but this session was a major transition. Well done Sir! That customer should be exhilarated to see the current state of this pine!
Hello, you are doing exactly what I am trying to do and that comforts me in my choices. Mugo pines have the advantage of not requiring too much maintenance, which is perfect for me. the result is superb…I will make more jin next time because it’s really nice. I put them in a big pot but for another reason, I can only water them once a day, and as it makes a heavy set, no one steals them from me.
The first man in history to have worked on a Mugo in a Monet shirt😀 Left a deep impression. Jokes apart, loved the full length detailed work. Glad that you finally jinned the bar branch, it was bothering me from the beginning.
Liked how you resisted and resisted the Jin until the last minute and then finally used it to solve the bar branch problem - great example of not doing Jin for the sake of it. The right hand Jin is nice with the gap around it as you can really envisage the space the fallen branch used to fill. One of my favourites!
Love videos like this, showing how to take a bush towards bonsai. Still a bit of work in the future but now it is back on track. Thx for a good sunday morning viewing.
It's amazing how a tree can actually break out of its pot to escape its confinement. There is a lesson there. Never quit trying. I know Ivy is invasive but that ivy was kind of proportionate for the tree...I thought it was a unique look if kept small.
awesome transformation!! Its unfortunate that the ivy isnt good for the trees health, I really liked how it looked with it on. Is there any clinging plants that are safe to use together with your bonsai? :)
What an amazing outcome. I thought that you had made a mistake making that second jin but no I could not have been more wrong. It is a beautiful tree now it's no longer just a bush. A fantastic video yet again, thanks Peter.
What bothered me about the branch you jinned, the one you called a bar branch, was that it appeared parallel with the branch below it. Also, it was on the inside of the curve of the trunk of the tree so it breaks the line. Even as a Jin it is parallel the branch below and inside the curve of the trunk but the defect is lessened greatly because it is shorter. What was essentially raw material is now well on its way to becoming a presentable Bonsai. It is very enjoyable watching you work Chan Sifu.
I agree with this, but I would cut away that jin and also the bar branch below it on the left side. I can see why they want to keep it, but no matter what you do that will always look like a bar branch.
Quite the upgrade from a neglected shrub to a majestic tree. Would it be acceptable to leave it in that "training" pot? I find that it looks quite natural and compatible with the size of the tree. Well done my friend. 👍
@@gariktv8756 that is subjective but I’d say similar but that doesn’t mean it’s fit for a show. You could put it in a show I would not. Rome wasn’t built in a day my dude.
It's a double edged sword isn't it. The relative neglect of the tree (it's clearly been tended and is full of growth) provides great raw material potential over time. But when Peter has worked some magic on it, will it look nice for a short time and fall into neglect again....
"the customer expects a miracle" --- because you're always doing them 🙂 !!!. IMHO the difference between a bush and a bonsai is the bush is full and the bonsai has open spaces between the branches, you can see through a bonsai but you cann't see through a bush, so its all about creating the spaces, "byte the bullet" means creating open space !
Hi my name is Donald I have a white elm bonsai tree that is sick with Stegophora ulmea Disease how can I save my tree any help will be appreciated thank you.
Elms suffer from many leaf diseases - some are viral. Try spraying with a mildew spray - that might work. Alternatively cut off all the leaves and burn them.
Mugos are exceptionally hard to find in the usa because most varieties sold here are bushes for ground cover. Only seen a handful that were suitable for bonsai
Could you pressure wash the roots. Water would flush the soil from the roots instead of the metal rake which seems inefficient in 2023. A wonderfully neglected tree. I see it as a method. Every ten years shape a pine tree and then neglect it.

I was guessing the whole time if Peter would remove that large next-to-bottom branch. He finally did, LOL.
Wow it looks like a completely different tree. Beautiful work to all involved 👩🏻🌾🪴

Thanks Both. A very enjoyable video and the resulting bonsai was great.
Peter,
Amazing transformation. Beginning to understand your thinking process.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. 🙏🙏🙏
Mr. Chan, you are a great bonsai master. Great detailed explanation!
What a transformation hope the owner appreciates your hard work you are a pleasure to watch
Peter is the most amazing master of bonsai! Thank you for this video again, Sir!!!

Nice work. Beautiful result!!
Awesome work 👍
That looks a nice shape
Wonderful transformation
Fantastic before and after along with great procedure.
Great transformation !
Outstanding work Peter. I hope some day my mugo pines becomes something similar.
22:08 it was great meeting you in Toronto! Thanks for taking the time once again!
I really enjoyed my meetings with the Toronto bonsai folk. I will let you know when I visit again as I have relatives there.
Very nice result!
Stunning transformation

This is a difficult one but always remember I try to please my customers most of the time. So there is that constraint.
I completely understand this and I hope you don´t see it as a critique. This is just my own gutfeeling 😄
Wonderful tutorial sir
bonsai yang keren
Exquisite ✨

beautifull bonsai thanks 🌳🌸
Great
Great video and great transformation. Could this tree be transformed to show level bonsai? Or it needs another couple years?
Would you put it in a show as it is?

How so?
This work would typically be best done in winter correct?
top very nice tree
Owner's comments during first 10 minutes: "Ohhhh, my poor tree!!"" Last one third of show: "Ahhhh! My lovely Tree!!!"
mr peter. thank you sir! got a question. are most of the mugo sold in the uk these days grafted? garden center/ raw material i mean
Some are and some are not
I miss the robin, who used to “help” Peter! ❤️
There are other Robins on the nursery but they are not so friendly like that one.
Do you ever sharpen the secators?
Just curious Peter, what was the reaction of the tree's owner?
God those parallel branches on the left were bothering me the whole video lol.
5:17 a good quote to tell your girlfriend :))

You learning fast !
Styling and also repotting in 1 time ?
This is NOT real repotting - I just put it into a larger pot
Where can I get that large size plastic pot??? Help...
We sell them in our nursery. If you live in UK you can order.
@@peterchan3100 ☹️😭😭 I am in Md, near Washington DC😭 I cant find them anywhere ...
A big bush!😂
muy chido!
What’s you height temps there in July?
July was wet. In June we had a temp one day of 32C

So, if you want to look and feel better, get rid of 60% of your stuff. Reposition what you have left and voila'! 😊
Back side is more beautiful, better movement
one day these trees are gonna revolt against you man.
👍👌👌🙂

That's too much disturbance for an established tree, and just not necessary.
@daboz88 too much disturbance? sort of like how he butchers trees every week thinking they look better after he cuts 90% of the branches
Absolutely butchered this tree 😂
Yah, when he called it a bush.. i just cringe. This dude is always cutting trees down to nothing
