Already getting comments about small hives not being aggressive, and I should try this with a big hive. I've proven this a lot in previous videos. Here is one. ua-cam.com/video/iMfcmenqSBQ/v-deo.html Here is another ua-cam.com/video/AkyDpSSsiVY/v-deo.html
David, you are such a fabulous teacher for us newbee's!! Love every single video you have ever put out. I liked that I couldn't see the nuc you were working in as it made me really listen to what you were saying rather than focusing on the bees. I don't know about anybody else, but when I start working with my bees, I'm unable to keep up a running commentary because I'm so focused on the bees, that it's difficult to do both. So for all the naysayers I think it was good that you didn't show what you were doing while you were explaining what you were doing and why you were doing it. Made me listen! Thank you so very much!! Carol
Hi Dave,...I,m watching you from across The Pond, lots to learn from you, I did apply some of your tehniques in my small apiary, you are a gentle giant with the bees, but a BEAST with your tripods..! keep doing the good work, will love you anyway..!
Just bought a Vortex Spotting scope and the most incredible tripod made by this same Vortex company... Best tripod I’ve ever seen. Thanks for your bee knowledge...
Thanks for this very valuable information David. I’m a new bee keeper and just made this mistake today, pulled my middle frame first and lo and behold my queen was on that frame. And this is my strongest hive. Scares me to think I could have injured or killed my queen. Hopefully I won’t make that mistake again.
Thanks David for your videos, I'm pretty new at bee keeping, your videos has helped me tremendously. I'm in Piedmont NC our weather is pretty much the same as yours in N.Ge. I've tried many of your suggestions like the Burgess fogger that I had never done before, followed your instructions, worked beautiful, thanks again for helping the new bee keepers. Bob S.
Just got my first package of bees installed today! Gotta leave them to do their thing but I am so curious about what they are doing in there. Looking forward to next week when I get to peek in the hive for the first time. Already fallen in love with those girls. Wife is starting to get jealous but she just doesn’t understand she has to share my heart with 10,000 other ladies. I’m sure she will get over it.
Hey David, great details on how and why to work thorough the hives. I know you aren't a fan of tripods but they do allow you to have both hands free. While we love seeing the beautiful blue Georgia sky and your face perhaps when you set up your tripod shot just make sure we see the nuc in the frame first. Cheers.
Thank you!! Have you ever just used nucs for beekeeping...I just split my big hive , used a nuc and loved the ease of moving it around . I only have 3 hives right now [including nuc] and am seriously thinking of getting more nucs for honey production. Any thoughts?
Dave, when transferring a 5 frame nuc to a 10 frame brood box. What’s the preferred layout in the brood box, 5 frames on one edge or put the 5 frames in the middle? Thanks
Hey David love your wisdom I think your tripod is probably fine for you to talk to. I think for us to to see what you see and too free up two hands I like a go pro and chest harness. ( not sure go pro harnesses made for your chest size) Go pro good for your own record's occasionly. I use a harness my phone my slots into, record's same as a go pro. A tripod that doesn't blow over is fine
Dave....for tripods, check with your local funeral home to see if they have any of the tripods they use for flowers. They usually have a butt load of them and they are pretty durable! I use them in the garden for tomato plant supports.
i almost never wear a protective gear on and usually open my hive like that , recently i've gotten a bitter reminder that at any moment bees can feel threaten and go in defense mode, over my 4 years of beekeeping i only gotten 10 stings and most of the time it was from me accidently pushing against them, this time tho i did the same thing as i always did and i got my butt handed to me , 60+ stings so always be carefull, start with your protective gear on always and if they are not defensive maybe take it off, lesson learnt the hard way
Do a search for best outdoor camera tripod and you’ll see a lot of good choices, like Digital Camera World has a best tripod of 2021 list, as do many other hiking and outdoor websites. A lot of lists show the Manfrotto brand. Hope you find something that works for you soon!
Get a Silk tripod and a ball mount head. If you're using a cell phone add the head of a selfie stick to the top to mount your camera in. Set it up where the hive is in focus start the video. You will have better results with your camera in portrait stance and a little farther back.
Also use a pencil, pen or pointer versus your hand. You will see better results with people seeing what you're trying to show them. Also always have the tripod at w right angle to the sun.
I think you need a cameraman to focus on what you are talking about because we see more of your frames rather than the hoey frame. Can't see the hive at all.
I have some 5 frame nucs that will send you running and I have a yard with David’s queens and they are just not aggressive 10 frames stacked 4 high and work them without a suit or veil .

He shouldn't label a video saying safely and not wear a veil. All it takes is 1 time swarm to the face
It's difficult to know what you're doing as the camera isn't showing the hive. Perhaps you could delete this video and do another

I really enjoy listening to you talk about bees. I've learned so much from you! I'm a second year beekeeper. Thank you for all the great information!
Thank you so much...
Thanks so much for your teaching videos.

Thanx David I'm 4 years in but still learning... I'm always in full gear though.... Your awesome 👍🏽
Thanks so much David, we all learn so much from you! Best wishes from the UK

9:37 I was wanting you to do that for nine and a half minutes! 😂 Great vid, thank you!

He says his broke in the video.
Great video David. It proves that knowing your bees and treating them quietly and calmly at a good time of day will get the best out of the bees!
Oh yes, timing with already Gentle bees is key.

Oh I know!! LOL. YOU taught me that!
great advise thank uuuu
Loving what you do!
Great video buddy thanks for sharing.
I love bees and your channel.

No, I also like 8 frames as well.

I was told to put them in the middle but definitely curious as to what Dave says
Hey David love your wisdom

Checked mine earlier this month, didn't take long to find my queen.
How often should you go into the hive to inspect it ?
Do you need to check it once a week in spring ect for swarming or is that not true ?
Great video buddy as usual!!✅😁👍
Are you still using fishing line in your foundation less frames or wire?
Yes fishing line.
David, 2 very good tripods are : Induro brand and the Manfrotto brand. I use both of them for Digital cameras.
I like your small hives. Are they just to make queens or could you harvest honey from them?
Yes you can get honey, we sale these as 5 frame nucs to customers.
Dave....for tripods, check with your local funeral home to see if they have any of the tripods they use for flowers. They usually have a butt load of them and they are pretty durable! I use them in the garden for tomato plant supports.
How to inspect a hive safely.
#1. Dont keep aggressive bees.
Lord yeah... You said a mouthful
i almost never wear a protective gear on and usually open my hive like that , recently i've gotten a bitter reminder that at any moment bees can feel threaten and go in defense mode, over my 4 years of beekeeping i only gotten 10 stings and most of the time it was from me accidently pushing against them, this time tho i did the same thing as i always did and i got my butt handed to me , 60+ stings so always be carefull, start with your protective gear on always and if they are not defensive maybe take it off, lesson learnt the hard way
Manfrotto is the best tripod money can buy

What happens if you do accidentally kill the queen?
Also use a pencil, pen or pointer versus your hand. You will see better results with people seeing what you're trying to show them. Also always have the tripod at w right angle to the sun.
Damn picking up bees and shit
To safely inspect your hive atleast wear a veil.
is it jusy me or i think all day how they get queen bees 🙃
I got stung by a dying bee somewhere 3 weeks ago, thinking of helping it by picking it up using bare fingers. Obviously I'm just not like the expert.
Yo
Dude! We can’t see anything you’re doing! Lol
I think you need a cameraman to focus on what you are talking about because we see more of your frames rather than the hoey frame. Can't see the hive at all.
All I could see was you WT#. 😟 How about seeing the hive
Thats why I need a tripod. Mine had broken, and I didn't know until it was time to film.
Can’t see what your doing below, I guess everyone told you lol
How about redoing this video. We can not see what you are doing. Could only see you 🤷♂️🤦♂️
I can think of an even easier way. Wear a suit. No special techniques or bee whisperer bullshit, just wear a suit.
We can’t see what you are talking about
Small colony will not be aggressive unless they have a virgin queen.
Howbout you show us a hive with 40 thousand bees and do the same vid mate
Well I've done that. Have you not seen the videos?
Here ya go, start watching at time line 10 minutes.

Here's another. ua-cam.com/video/AkyDpSSsiVY/v-deo.html
I have some 5 frame nucs that will send you running and I have a yard with David’s queens and they are just not aggressive 10 frames stacked 4 high and work them without a suit or veil .
Thank you.
I was talking about that particular colony, it had probably 1.5 frames of wax with probably 3 cups of bees in it
