      Wire-cut foam wings are definitely fading in popularity. The PNP molded foam wings have just gotten so much higher in quality and lower in price the last few years that it’s really tough to compete. But it’s super satisfying to put a good wire-cut build together and the ability to customize means you can get creative if you want.

    • @swissfreek
      @swissfreek 9 місяців тому +1

      @@chrisbee5481for a first wing? I dunno. I’d say AR Classic. Everyone should have one. But I’m partial to wire cut builds and if you’re looking to get into that, this RR kit looks really straightforward and well put together.

    • @swissfreek
      @swissfreek 9 місяців тому +2

      @@chrisbee5481 it’s relative. The AR classic at 35” to me is a mid-size wing, but then my favorite wing is 52” and I’ve got stuff as big as 90” and as small as 18”. I think 35” is about the perfect balance of having room to mess around inside without everything being super tight, easy to hit CG, decent in a crash, big enough to not get pushed by every gust of wind, but small enough to launch easily with one hand and can still fit basic 5” quad motor/ESC/battery/prop that are easily available everywhere. And it comes apart if you want to fit it in a bag. And it’s cheaper than dirt.

      It looks way worse than it really is. Just a little patience and attention to detail. It’s also not as exacting as it looks. You can get away with a lot of fudging/imprecision if the basics are correct. Downside is yeah it doesn’t just bolt together like the quads.

    8:30 With Welder’s getting harder and harder to find over the last few years, a good alternative is either FoamTac, which you can usually get at your local hobby shop (or online), *or* better still, you can pick up Aleene’s Ultimate at craft stores (Hobby Lobby, Michael’s, Jo-Ann, possibly even Walmart). Both Aleene’s Ultimate and FoamTac are contact cements like Welder’s, which makes them great for this sort of task (joining the wing halves together where it’s tricky to pin them if the glue takes a while to set like Gorilla or E6000/Goop), but way way easier to find, and in my experience they don’t get yellow and brittle over time like Welder’s will. Just a tip for newer folks who might be like “WTF is Welder’s???”

    • @swissfreek
      @swissfreek 9 місяців тому

      @@WipeoutFPV yeah, in Europe that’s your best bet. Welder’s hasn’t been available there for ages, and from what I can tell E6000/Goop and Gorilla Glue are also tough to find?
      Does UHU Por have the same contact cement properties as Welder’s and FoamTac? As I recall it didn’t, but I haven’t used it in decades. If it does, that’s definitely a good option.

    The ER4 has voltage telemetry which you can set up to give low voltage warnings. It's cool that walksnail shows voltage without an FC but seems unnecessary in your build. If you haven't flown a wing before you are a brave person or rich putting expensive HD FPV gear on the nose. Be wise to go with cheap old analog until you get the hang of it.

      I wish it were possible. I thought long and hard about what type of wing to bring to the store. Unfortunately, with airplanes, you either get durability or ease of build. Typically the quick bnf planes aren’t durable. It takes soooooo long to build these wings, the labor time would be very expensive.

      @christhorney 8 місяців тому

      @@LetsFlyRC I'll count them while hot gluing it back together, also it's not like one will explode while the other won't, so I don't see your point, I can get a moulded smooth clean nice looking airframe that's stronger due to its smooth surface that doesn't want to rip that I can also laminate, vs a hot wire cut thing that if you want a decently aerodynamic airframe you have to laminate, something that requires this much work from the end user should be cheap, I don't see any value here, nor do I see the point of your response since it will kill both aircraft and both cost the se for a replacement airframe lol I'll take a dolphin or swordfish or like 100 other planes for the same money over this thing all day long. Heck you could have 3d printed moulds that would make a nicer product, hot wire planes are only good for diy or prototyping, you really should be selling a better quality product for the money, the amount of offcuts wasted foam you want me to pay for is unreal, and I expect better from not just rotor riot, but you Shawn especially.

      @@christhorney I am not telling you to buy anything. Nor, do I set the prices. The price is based off of what it cost, plus a minimal profit.
      I am telling you that my wing WILL survive most concrete impacts, as I have done it over and over many times flying through parking garages with this plane.
      I wanted to build a plane that was more durable than what I normally fly, so that I can do more difficult proximity flights without having to repair my plane after every crash.
      You can keep being mad if you want, but, I usually build things that I want FOR ME, FOR MY NEEDS, and usually other people tend to appreciate my efforts as they are usually done because I am trying to make something better than it was previously to advance the hobby, or to help new pilots succeed.
      If you don’t appreciate my efforts, that is fine. Keep flying what you want to fly. I didn’t do anything wrong. I provided input, tested and designed a wing that was right for my needs. And it flies like it is on rails and can take a hit.
