@@Gryffyth_Aurum I am not upset or insecure, but I don’t like the crazy hair colors. It is no more than an opinion. I happen to be a fan of the pilot who wears eyeliner.
I recently re-entered the hobby after a few years (had kids, didn't have time to tinker with FPV). I resurrected my old QAV250 and it literally had some of these trends! It has the slots on the top plate to angle a board camera (but I use a camera mount), it has a PDB board as a bottom plate (seems to be fairly durable though after many crashes) and I just removed the camera couch for my old Hero3 Black because that camera died and I bought a runcam 5 so I now have a new 3D printed mount for it. I also toned down the camera angle. Back in the day I remember super-high camera angles as being "the thing" but now it seems like around 20 degrees is more reasonable. I still have some of those glass fibre props so I'm going to use those up (probably in a flight or two) and then replace them with modern more durable props. I'd love to upgrade the VTX and goggles to digital but it's so expensive! My FatSharks do suck and my FPV camera is worse but they work. I'll replace them when they break.
After 2, each extra blade experiences diminishing returns, theyre spinning in the slipstream of eachother. The sweet spot is between 2 and 4 i think. (For quad size props, different craft that are larger or smaller have different sweet spots. 3d fpv needs the same camera width as your eyes to see proper depth of field. Its doable on larger quads but smaller ones its a nightmare to set up. You can do it with optics too, mirrors and a small tube to the ends of the front motor mounts, but its not really worth the complexity. One trend that needs to come back is collective pitch quads. They have so much potential and they haven't been done much at ALL.
I think 3D FPV could still be awesome with DJI HD resolutions. Although depth still won't be very pronounced due to the extremely wide lenses needed for FPV piloting.
Here are a few more FPV trends that died (or are dying): - Mounting ESCs to arms (most racers are going 4-in-1) - Running 3S on 5" racing/freestyle (4S is also dying but still popular) - Linear VTx polarization - LED controller boards - Bullet connectors on motor wires
"Analog needs to die" @LeDrib @RotorRiot, maybe when digital has an option as cheap as a good set of box goggles ($80 - $100). Things are getting cheaper, so maybe sometime in the next year.
So u want digital in a box with a terrible screen and trash receiver? As long as high end analog is more expensive then digital i see no point in cutting the price even more
@@r00kiet80 The receiver wont be bad because it will be a digital receiver. The screen wont be bad because it's a big HD screen (analog example is the FatShark Scouts and Recons, they are pretty nice to look at). What will make it cheaper is not needing expensive focals/optics and all the stuff that's needed for them. You can also take out all HDMI in/out electronics. You can probably shave off $100 by having a Box HD solution.
Things that died: KK flightcontrollers, the dji450 style frames, the oldschool sony 600tvl cam, first versions of multiwii and needing to compile your FC software for every little change, low yaw rates, autotune, separate OSDs because they werent integrated on flightcontrollers yet, Naza on 5"quads, 1.2Ghz fpv(and a lot of huge 1.2 cloverleaf antennas) and i probably think of a few more.
Drift car videos are what got me into fpv 🤣 but honestly just about everything has been overdone done. It's hard find an fpv video that blows my mind like when I first discovered it

@@ThirstysURL I could do a counter list to alot of your negatives but I cant be bothered because you know its the future and I dont blame you for clinging on to the old tech but in a few years people will be saying " whats analog?"
Had to comment on this. I do not know if it became a trend, but servo-tilt fpv cameraes on drones (I have the Align MR25 which has a fpv-camera connected to a servo, that can tilt up and down automatically to compensate for the angle of the quad) was a thing. Also, a thing that must die, is having to use a computer to set up the quad rates, e.t.c. Love my ImmersionRC Vortex quads that allow me to do this through an OSD menu. Quad setup and tuning through the OSD needs to be standard on all quads. And it needs to be through the OSD, not through an app on the phone, conneted by bluetooth, or on a pc. Also, foldable quad arms were a thing. Well known on tri-copters (which had them of course), but my ImmersionRC Vortex 285 (I think, or was it 275) had foldable arms on the front and back. That is a thing of the past on racing quads.
@@noisy_boi_fpv_3920 Perhaps. Have not testet newer setups. But is that set up as standard, so you can purchase a quad, bind it to a radio, set it up and tune it through the OSD, all without using a computer.
Another trend that died is custom startup tones. I remember Bljeli32 where you had preset options like the imperial death march and everyone had it. But at a race nobody wants to be the one playing a jingle followed by out of sink ESC beeps.
It was obvious. Custom melodies are nice in parties and exhibitions. For real life flying they simply are not practical. Think about plugging battery in and after a shot beep being ready to fly. Or waiting until that cool intro music will end after 3-4 times longer time. And on each new battery that long crap will sound again and again and again...

we laugh at the stone age camera wedge but we're still flying around with the battery strapped to the roof rack or underneath like some kind of bloody afterthought.
The ZMR250 and QAV250 had dedicated battery sleeves and all it wound up doing was limiting the size and shape of the battery you could have on board. I think the straps we have now give us the most versatility.
In a decade when we have batteries with much higher energy density the batteries will be so light and thin, possible you could probably throw one into your stack!

@@blkgostnone4092 how do u know u have no dislikes? Whats wrong with the controller its not hard to make a android controller so i cant imagine theres something wrong with it obviously its overpriced but who cares lol
Stop trying to kill Analog Drib. It's not dead for a long time.
They have to push their sponsor :)
Yeah. Tbh I like but I can feel the latency
@Jacob Baron Agreed, analogue tech is hugely affordable, 'open source', and lightweight. There's no chance of 1S 60g AUW HD toothpick builds or 29g AUW HD tiny whoops happening any time soon.
@@licensetodrive9930 And goggles that practically take up their own backpack...
The marketplace doesn't exist for Digital - it's DJI. Bytefrost isn't nearly competitive at this point. I would guess we're 2-5 years from a real open digital standard in FPV.
For the amount of time i'm flying, i ain't gonna get HD very soon
Not everyone can afford to go digital, obviously... This hobby took me into many other different hobbies that are hard on the wallet... My first quad was one that I built myself and I still have it, then 3d printing got thrown into the mix, and I was already building my own computers so I have a pretty awesome PC for running drone simulations... Its fun but anyone that says its an easy hobby to get into is a liar, because you have to have knowledge of many different sub-hobbies it can be pretty frustrating. Money can be an issue under this load of hobbies too obviously... I would love to be able to meet the rotor riot team and fly with them... I live my life in constant pain but when I fly its the only time I feel nothing at all, but the exhilarating sensation of flight that I dreamed of when I was a young child and im also a recovering addict so I hope this is never taken away from me... Almost 2 years clean and my biggest fear is the FAA fucking with me... Flying is my Sanctuary!
Congrats on your sobriety, keep it up. Glad this great hobby is helping you👍👊
Keep up the great work man! FPV has helped me also!
Why do you live ur life in constant pain?
One of my favorite platforms is my baby tricopter from Windestaal’s online store that unfortunately has since closed. I bought 4 spare tail assemblies before it closed in anticipation of future crash damage. It’s so swoopy to fly. It’s a very different experience. Love it! I see myself always having a tricopter in my lineup.
ROFL. Thanks, this was soooo much fun! What an amazing walk down memory lane. And fyi, I'm in the middle of restoring an RCExplorer Tricopter v3. They're cool AF. Best regards from Brasilia, Brazil.
I think dyeing the pilots hair unnatural colors is a trend that hopefully is gone.
And guys wearing eye liner rite along with stupid hair colors
Are you really so insecure that you get upset about what someone else does to their hair and eye lashes?
@@Gryffyth_Aurum not insecure, just think it's ridiculous...nd that's just my opinion ya know
@@Gryffyth_Aurum I am not upset or insecure, but I don’t like the crazy hair colors.

I actually read that as 10 fpv friends that died and was confused why jb was smiling 😅
YES!! Please, no more drift car chasing! Couldn't agree more. It's a yawn.
Are we avoiding the obvious? The number one fpv trend that died was.. Rotor Riot
was looking for the comment
Not yet , rotor riot is doing pretty well these days. Looks that way !
They're doing fine 2 years later
I just love you guys. Hearing veterans of anything swapping stories of how it used to be is super entertaining.
I gotta be honest. I read the title of your video as "10 FPV friends died" and your thumbnail was you with a huge smile 🤣🤣
Make digital as cheap and accessible as analogue and we might gonna get to the switch^^
What's funny is the retrofitting of things like the cinemizer was exactly how consumer VR started
Yes there was a time before Oculus Rift - it was DIY....
I think 3D FPV could still be awesome with DJI HD resolutions. Although depth still won't be very pronounced due to the extremely wide lenses needed for FPV piloting.
Here are a few more FPV trends that died (or are dying):
- Mounting ESCs to arms (most racers are going 4-in-1)
- Running 3S on 5" racing/freestyle (4S is also dying but still popular)
- Linear VTx polarization
- LED controller boards
- Bullet connectors on motor wires
Bullet connectors died in 2015
Velcro on lipos 😄

I hold my 4s lipos to my zmr 250 with velcro still!!!
@@r00kiet80 just one word ' privileged '
Things that died: KK flightcontrollers, the dji450 style frames, the oldschool sony 600tvl cam, first versions of multiwii and needing to compile your FC software for every little change, low yaw rates, autotune, separate OSDs because they werent integrated on flightcontrollers yet, Naza on 5"quads, 1.2Ghz fpv(and a lot of huge 1.2 cloverleaf antennas) and i probably think of a few more.
Drift car videos are what got me into fpv 🤣 but honestly just about everything has been overdone done. It's hard find an fpv video that blows my mind like when I first discovered it
Best comment in here. It’s true. I can’t stand watching FPV related videos either. I fly for me and couldn’t give a shit what the latest hype is. Could never stand vlogs either. Came across as narcissistic. Only trolling the comments. I didn’t even watch the vid do to what I just mentioned.
@@apsfpv2217 🤣👌
Everytime Drew throws that analog needs to die, joshua wants to leave him alone 🤣🔥
Until digital becomes truly open sourced, analog will live on.
You get a lot more cyberpunk-point for making your own FPV-goggles than buying a pair of Fatsharks. We need to go back!
Analog works for beginners and poor people like me That really love this 🐬 hobby like me 🙄
A lot of these trends are silly in retrospect, but fun inventive moments in the development of this hobby
Used to be a day you flew by holding onto a kite handle with two lines running out to your model...and it had no throttle, no yaw, no roll control, just pitch.
Thumbs up for the David Windestal mention and for the Mobius.
what about watching MrSteele... Pretty much dead. Took RotorRiot with him! (unless you want to watch his drift videos)
Dude, he just evolved. UA-cam isn't exactly a great source of income. He's making 6 figures shooting commercial gigs for high dollar productions. Still flying an open prop 5" freestyle rig. 2019 going into 2020, up until now he's gotten progressively more busy and demand for him is through the roof.
Glass nylon props... remember when we used to take BAGS of props to the field? And you’d have like, nothing but “left” props? And it was like $3 for a pair of props (not 4, but 2). And you’d buy them in two different colors so you could tell left from right easily. And you’d go home because you RAN OUT of props... we’re so damned spoiled haha.
Even now bent props are a pain in ass. But no way to get over that without practice. And practice come with flying.
Some good stuff on this list
these guys live under a rock. Gemfan still makes 5 bladed props in fact they are new. they are smooth AF
I've seen just about every one of these trends. 😄 I love watching this hobby evolve, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!
I’m so glad you guys made this video. I haven’t been hardcore in the fpv drone scene for the past couple years. This was excellent! A trip down memory lane!
I still want to do 3D FPV. Though I will make sure the cameras are as far apart from each other as my eyes.
I wonder if it would work better if they were even further apart than your eyes
I began FPV in 2014 and stopped in 2016-2017... so this videos ....is just my world ! :D

"Rotor-Riot died"
I didn't say it
Camera couch will never die!!
Oh and I 2nd that digital FPV... once I experienced it, I couldn't go back to analog!
I could've got DJI and still can, BUT..
1. 2x heavier unmodded.
2. No small drones with cheap batteries for playing for long periods with many batteries.
3. Very expensive drones you can't relax with properly.
4. They have higher latency.
5. Image cuts to black immediately making it more likely to lose or crash expensive drone.
6. Only 2 cameras actually look O.K. (i own 4k TV's)
7. Dji is and always has been just a flying camera company for photographers.
8. Stress, worry, devastation, ect.
9. I'm not stupid.
@@ThirstysURL I could do a counter list to alot of your negatives but I cant be bothered because you know its the future and I dont blame you for clinging on to the old tech but in a few years people will be saying " whats analog?"

I spent so much money on glass nylon props. You are welcome HQ! I still have a lot left.
the good rotor riot died and now its just for money not fun
Careful, they already ban 1 person for saying rotor riot.... censorship at its finest.
They forgot trend 11 🤣
Just for money, sponsorship plugging, and hype.
You can change rates/pids in betaflignt osd 🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@noisy_boi_fpv_3920 Perhaps. Have not testet newer setups. But is that set up as standard, so you can purchase a quad, bind it to a radio, set it up and tune it through the OSD, all without using a computer.
Rotor Riot died when they stop carrying the low cost FPV gear.
Joshua does lots of reviews dji is just superior in every way so i see no point in covering all the trash
People need entry level stuff, though
Rotor riot died when Charpu left
@@dafoexemax capitalized on that so hard
Another trend that died is custom startup tones. I remember Bljeli32 where you had preset options like the imperial death march and everyone had it. But at a race nobody wants to be the one playing a jingle followed by out of sink ESC beeps.
It was obvious. Custom melodies are nice in parties and exhibitions. For real life flying they simply are not practical. Think about plugging battery in and after a shot beep being ready to fly. Or waiting until that cool intro music will end after 3-4 times longer time. And on each new battery that long crap will sound again and again and again...
Wooden frames, 6 inch quads, 3S batteries, and ground stations
I remember when I turned 18, the year covid happened, I was walking near the football field of the high school near by when I saw a duo of two guys wearing Home Made Goggles, and using DIY drones, he let me wear the goggles and showed me my whole town/city, it was amazing and looked good, but when I asked he said DIY don't do nothing else, so cool can't believe now Im getting into it
Me: Still believing in softmounted motors, searching my skigoggle, flying on analog.
I miss the old FPV days, when everyone was hyped about the Atlanta crew, FGA + MrSteele were in the RR team and we went out flying just for the sake of flying.
Who woulda thunk a drone pilot could sound so boomer?
Definitely the most informative video about FPV Drones I've ever watched.
Re #6 It would be interesting to see a Y6 performance on modern esc. a 5" Y6 could actually have interesting flight potential.
Trend that needs to die: the mandatory Euro-Dance-DJ-Club music on every flight video.
Sorry guys, i love tricopters (with KK2 FC). "Simplecopters" are awesome. Wood and 3d printed parts are always available and cheap. No computer/smartphone needed to tune your copter.👍
My favorite was the Simple Copter Vtail until I build a mini of the Simple Copter Vtail on a 3D printer. A blast to fly.

I fly fatsharks and DJI, and there's no difference, at least not any thats actually noticeable.
@@RADERFPV you'll need to fly harder and on the edge then... ;)
it is noticeable when coming from analogue to digital.

You forgot to mention that "flash in the pan" we all remember as 5S
we laugh at the stone age camera wedge but we're still flying around with the battery strapped to the roof rack or underneath like some kind of bloody afterthought.
I still keep a set of 6 blade props in my bag. There is no better way to freak other drone pilots "especially newer ones who weren't around for the craze ;)" than the sound from 6 bladed props.
This was genuinely interesting and fun to watch. Good job guys! It's cool to see how these things came and went, I still have a sheet of unused motor soft mounts somewhere...
