  • This is my second wheel bearing I have replaced. This side went much smoother and faster. The second one usually is. I am an enthusiast and hope this video will be helpful for you. If this work is outside your comfort level hiring a mechanic is always an option. If you do, now at least you will have a better idea of what may need replacing before making a call.

Bro thank you so much for making this insanely detailed video. I’m new to working on cars and not very handy and had to watch your video over and over lol it’s so much better than other instructional videos.

Just a tip for anyone doing this: the axle nut is meant to be tightened with a 2 point axle socket. You can borrow one from most auto parts stores for a refundable deposit. The nut needs to be torqued to 60 ft/lbs then backed off to 15 ft/lbs.

Do you think it would be any significant difference for one with manual hubs? Thanks!

      Hi MJ,
There is a seal behind the disk brake "inside I guess" and the 4WD locker acts as the outside seal.
      Happy Maintance! 🙂

Did you make sure to count how many times you spun the bearing/hub lock ring when you removed it so you could reinstall it with the same number of rotations?

I did not with the mind set that the old bearings / hub lock ring were worn out "less thickness". I felt it would be too tight with the same count. I did make sure to set the bearing with a good amount of torque then rotate the wheel. With this tightness the wheel would not spin freely so I backed off just enough to for free wheel spin without it being loose. I took a few goes at it until I thought it was perfect. Both front wheels are spinning like a champ and nice and straight driving on the freeway. :) What would you recommend?

@@jonathanreinke9392 I grew up in the garage, shit I learned fractions from wrenches and I've been turning em since I was 4 or 5. The old timers taught me to always count the spins. I understand the thinking with new bearings being too tight with the same number of spins but at the same time, you're not going in and tightening them down as they wear right? My grandad owned a 4x4 shop here in town and his brother owned a hot rod shop. It didn't matter what you were working on, if it could be too tight or too lose, count how many times you turn it.

Thanks Michael for your feed back!
As my wheels are working great a year later I will leave them as is. For my next bearing repair I will count the times I turn it to see how it feels first. Even if the same location is chosen your suggestion sounds smart and more efficient. :)

@@jonathanreinke9392 hell yea brother! No problem! I like to repack with fresh grease any time I get water up to my body, unless it's a basic crossing and I'm not up over my axle for more than a couple minutes, or any time I hit the dunes. My brother in law gave me my 95 pathfinder back in 07 when him and my sister first started dating kuz he was going to Basic and had a vehicle that got better mpg, and I never charged him for labor as long as he was willing to learn something. Put fresh wheel bearings in @ 62,000. Just rolled over 170,000 I've repacked them at least 10 times after some wicked wheelin trips, and they're still silent and smooth as could be!

I've searched all over for a video of this for a 4x4 Hardbody, does anyone know if it's the same procedure?
