The Custom Bucker can sound a bit tin-can-like when the tone and vol are at full with their open air on top, but when you roll the the knobs down a bit, going into a nicely overdriven amp, they are absolutely heavenly.

Here we go again: Another discussion about the question: Does a Les Paul with PAFs have to sound like a "Tele on steroids?" What is the "correct" sound of a PAF? I don't believe that there is only one correct answer to this question. Most of us (including myself) have never played an original PAF. Some of them are said to sound almost Tele-like, others seem to sound fatter. At any rate: I think that both - Burtsbuckers and Custombuckers - are great pickups in their own right. Would have been interesting to hear them with a more gainy sound.
Burstbucker seems to have a deeper bottom and the top end rolled off. Seems like you could get the same sound with the custombucker if the tone knob is turned to 6-8. Thanks for the video.
Another useful comparison. Thanks JS. I think most guitar players are interested in changing pickups more than just about any other thing, besides strings, to get better tone so ademo such as yours is very helpful. I'd put the custom in a SG and the other in a LP.

Customs sound much clearer to me, which I love.
Custom pickups make a custom set of sounds. A ‘better than average’ set of sounds.
But you’re wasting your time speaking to guitarists cause they’re mysterious and obviously crazy. They don’t belong in the 2020 era. They don’t wish to participate and are extremely rude and disrespectful and aggressive to others.

I'm all for the Burstbucker. It's warmer without losing articulation and just grooves when you want.
The Custombucker is tighter and sharper & if that's your thing, go for it. If I want the highs sharper I'll do it with my eq. That Burstbucker is aural gold.

Great demo, as usual! Clearly, the BB are higher output, and have a more mid-heavy tone. The Custom Buckers are bright and cleaner sounding. Depends what you want. IMHO, the BB sound better, punchier, through that Marshall!
They sound pretty much the same through my jbl lsr 305 monitors. Great video as usual Johan Segeborn. I do hand wound p.a.f. type pickups, would love to send you a set.

Bursts definitely have a warmer, more focused tone. The extraneous harmonics of the customs almost made it sound noisy.
Custombucker sounds like it's unpotted, where the burstbucker sounds like it is potted. I haven't googled yet to see if I'm right, but the custombucker seems to have similiar qualities to a seymour duncan antiquity, which I am more familiar with. Now, off to check myself!

I have those same 2 pickups a bb1&2 in a 10 r8 les paul and custom bucker from 14 was in a r8 that got replaced for a throbak and will never go back in love the throbak it might go in my sg, and the bb1&2 got replaced with custom shop pearly gates that i never liked, and eventually the bb1&2 went back in. They are thinner sounding than the throbaks but i dont mind that for now. I always liked the bb1&2, i think its because they are so lively.
I really enjoy your Pick up videos Johan. And I understand why most of them are done using clean tones (so you can hear the difference more distinctly) but these pick ups shine on dirty tones. that I would love to hear more of. But I understand totally. Keep doing what your doing buddy.
Thanks Chuck, yeah it would indeed have been good to have some high gain parts too, since a slight frequency change gives a different top end sparkle to the distortion.
Custombucker sounds slightly clearer top to bottom burstbucker 2 sounds little more vintage in the treble and mids I have both in r8 les Paul's so this was very interesting to me I like them both but maybe the burstbucker 2 slightly better for the more vintage sound thanks. Great comparison! I'm of the belief that a PAF is a PAF is a PAF. Even in a mass-produced pickup with set specifications there are always going to be variables which impact overall tone. To my ears the Custombucker is a bit thinner, but you could also say it's much clearer. But if you were to add a bit of overdrive you'd be talking about a much less noticeable variance, especially considering any differences could be compensated for in every other link in the signal chain.
That specific custombucker is more open than the burstbucker but lacks some low end frequencies that the burstbucker has. It just doesn't sound as full as the burstbucker. I would consider it a thinner sound due to the lack of those frequencies. I didn't think I would like the burstbucker more, since that's what I have in my 2007 LP Standard, but I do in this instance.

Agreed. I don't think the difference in overall tonal output would lead me to swap over to custombuckere @ over $500 a set.
The custombucker is fuller and sweeter. The burstbucker is thin, and a bit harsh on the high end. It's like they were the same pickups being played, and someone changed the eq settings.

I think it's because custombucker has alnico 3 magnet inside and BB2 has alnico 2. Just little difference.

Custombucker has a custom set of sounds. Gibson style.
You need to find out what is Gibson’s trademark sounds.
The Custombuckers sound clearer and more open. By comparison, the Burstbuckers sound more congested and boxy. I wonder what the DC resistance is so we can compare them. I wonder if the Custombuckers have fewer winds.

Nice demo Johan and love the Custombuckers that I have in my 59’ Reissue. They’re sparkly and sweet when clean and can get aggressive and dirty with drive!!
Another great comparison. This reflects exactly what I've heard in my own guitars with CBs and BB2s. I prefer the CB for it's brighter, more articulate and crunchier tone in a Les Paul. I prefer the BB2 in a 335 for it's warmer bell like tone. Both great pups. Thanks again Johan!

I once looked into getting a set of custombuckers, over $300. For a set. I can't hear any difference worth noting here. Perhaps I don't have the trained ear that's needed. I'm so thankful that, once again You have demonstrated something I really need to hear and probably would never be able to. Certainly not as focused and detailed. Thank you so much Johan

Custombucker has very little to no low end, crank the amp and it'll sound like heaven!
I love the Custombucker much more and by far! Had never player one yet… my five bb2 are sounding pretty good, at different heights and with bare knuckle 550k pots, .047 capacitors! But that custom beasts are the Must
I would love to see a video where both types are compared with mag swap to see how different they are with the same magnet I know many poeple are putting alnico 3 mags in their burstbucker 2 pickups to get the custom bucker sound but I have not found any before and after mag swap videos. if they are very close you could save alot of money buying a magnet as opposed to the very high priced poeple are charging on eBay for custom buckers. I know some poeple have reported great results mimicking the page burstbuckers by putting alnico 3 mags in burst bucker 2 pickups. one guy put s short a5 in a 490r to mimic a t top bridge pickup and put an a3 in burstbucker 2 for the neck pickups in an attempt to get jimmy pages mid 70s tone and the results blew me away he got killer page tone with that setup he really nailed that nasal page honk tone. just goes to show you don't need uber expensive boutique paf clones to get that sound. I have a spare 490r and burstbucker 2 laying around and am going to try it. the guy who did the swap posted s demo video on yoh tube demoing the results. I love your videos and always learn something new and useful everyone i watch .
I would love to hear you compare the 59 Parts Screambuckers to one or both of these...maybe even to some vintage PAFs :-)

So many comments showing that peoples brains are hearing similar tonal qualities in each pick up type even though they sound different. I guess we all hear differently.
I hear the custom buckers tone as clearer, sweeter, softer some will say the burst buckers have those very qualities over the custom buckers.
Burstbuckers just really don’t cut the mustard for vintage PAF’s. I recently switched out my Burstbuckers in my LP Traditional to OX4’s with low-wind A4 magnets. The difference was absolutely staggering. The overtones were far more noticeable and the dynamics and clarity was drastically improved. Also some of the harsh high-mids in the Burstbuckers were absent in the OX4’s. Burstbuckers are great pickups on their own but really don’t sound close to PAFs if that’s the sound you’re going for...

The custombucker was made brighter to compensate for the lack of a maple top on the SG. The burstbucker on the Les Paul on the other hand was on a guitar with maple top which brightened the tone. Try the same test on the SG, and you’ll see how well the custom complements the guitar.
This Les Paul is actually all Mahogany and even darker than the SG. Cheers

Theres an inherent error in this video. Neither humbucker has been properly adjusted. The burst bucker is a great pickup but the heights need to be individually adjusted per string. I had my Les Paul for years before I realized how drastically this changes the sound. They are extremely versatile with a ton of differnet sounds you can get, including the coveted PAF sound. You just got take the time to dial in the sound you want with a few turns of a screwdriver.
I should add that the Les Paul is an extremely versatile instrument, that just takes some time getting to know how to dial in your preferred sound. The tone volumes, pick up heights etc are all adjustable and require just a little bit of time and effort. Once a guitarist unveals this, there is a whole world that can be discovered with this instrument. My only complaint is that Gibson fails to explain this to their customers and most major retailers don't either.

I thought the burstbucker sounded better. The custom bucker seemed too bright and less bottom end. It's strange though because I have a 2014 R9 with custom buckers and they don't sound at all like that. I guess the guitar might make a difference as well though.
Ive always loved my bb1&2. I hear oeople trash talk them, but i must have got a great pair. They sound good here though. Do a 1959 tib vrs video thanks bro
A little more high end with the Customs. Maybe wound with fewer turns since they’re just a hair cleaner too. Between these two they’d be my choice ‘cuz I like clarity. A good PAF has some Tele-like bite in the bridge position too, and the Customs get closer to that.

The both sound good, however the Burst buckers are a tiny bit bassier, as other posters stated the Custombuckers have a snapiness to them.....it depends on the sound you want ....Burst buckers work better with higher gain...Custom buckers are real good clean ....almost telecaster like

yes they are subtle, I here it mostly in the last three (thicker strings), what a great Custom Bucker does for me is that middle position becomes more brighter and is able to slice through a band mix better....also the neck pickup is less muddier on some guitars....
I've factory Custombuckers in a 2013 LP historic '58 and they're good :-)

As always, great comparison. I prefer the CB. It's definitely livelier and more present. Basically they are not that different, but what sets them apart is the potting: BB's are potted (duller) and CB's are not. They also use different magnets: BB's A5, CB's A3. One can take the slight shrillness of the CB off with the tone pot, but not so with the BB. I vote for the clarity of the CB.
That wasn’t true of Custombuckers in 2013 like these ones. Back then they were lightly wax potted. It’s only with the introduction of the 60th Anniversary 1959 Les Paul in 2019 that the truly unpotted Custombuckers came out and became standard fitment across the entire range of Les Paul “Reissues”.
What I’ve read online, the BB 1,2 and 3 are Alnico 2 and with unbalanced coils (differing winds on each coil). The BB Pros are Alnico 5. Also, the BB 2 and 3 are un-potted. I haven’t found the difference in specs between BB2 and CB published anywhere.
BB 1,2&3 use an A2, store bought no potting in a custom shop guitar, potted. BB pros, A5 and Potted.
I have a 2010 reissue with Burstbuckers and was able to purchase some of the true historic covers for them. After swapping covers, it seems that the pickups sort of opened up a little more and I got a touch more clarity all around. I honestly think the cover material/construction/thickness has a fair amount of effect on the overall tone of the pickups. I wonder if these two models covers differ at all and whether or not that may be causing some of the tonal variations.

They both sound pretty good to me. Maybe some slight muddiness in the mid-range tones in the Burstbucker when compared to the other. Just going by this video I would be more inclined toward the Custombucker. Bright and likely.

These pickups are calibrated for every guitar so it’s a case of shot or miss if you change them !
Both sund very good. Not a huge difference, if you want the burstbucker to sound a little brighter might as well adjust pole pieces or tweak the amp.
burstbucker 2 had more low end and is a bit fuller and creamy. I liked the custom bucker better on the lead but the burstbucker better for rythum as it's fuller . I would have liked to hear then played with some overdrive and some classic power chord riff like stuff. I think the burstbucker night be better for heavy rock where they are thicker and have more low end. which is better will depend greatly on what sound you want . great video I wad hoping some burstbucker custombucker comparisons would start popping up.
I have 57 classics in my Les Paul ,I was going to put in bare knuckle pg blues in it , but now I'm considering a set of these guy's, damn you Johan, hahaha:)

My guit came with burstbucker . I didn't like them . I put in custombuckers , I liked them better , but still were not what I wanted . So I went with the ole tried and true DiMarzio 36th paf. Better sound .. quieter . Just better than anything Gibson makes . I have 10 Gibson's . And not one has Gibson pickups .
To me the difference sounds like a really good solid state clean amp(BB) vs a clean tube amp (CB). I have an ES 339 with the BB, it sounds wonderful but after playing it a lot I’ve been noticing a slightly congested sound, exactly like depicted in the video. Now I need a Custom shop in my life!
Is it possible to compare a standard humbucker vs a slanted/angled one someday? I've always been curious.

Guys, don't you know it is all Gibson's trade game? Everyone can hear they sound the same and even if there is a hair of difference it is next to nothing. It is much better stop loosing time on this and concentrate on making gold music

My burstbuckers in my 2019 LP Traditional don’t have the black PAF stickers, only a cheap white sticky paper with the date it was wound. Kinda lame.
Anyways, just swapped a new custombucker into my LP after playing the burstbucker 2 since I purchased the guitar. I own another LP originally stocked with 57 classic/plus. I have to say, the custombuckers are right in between a burstbucker 2 and a the 57 classic. Burstbucker has the airy, somewhat bassier tone whereas the custombuckers are crisp with clearer highs
The custom bucker might cut through a mix better, but the burstbucker just sounds like velvet.

Excellent job. I was surprised they were fairly even overall. No folks, I'm not deaf and I heard the subtle differences. Maybe I was expecting the sky to open up and the sun to shine or something? I'd still take a set though, I'm not that big of an idiot.
Burstbucker is Les Paul's sound!. You get really humbucker type of sound where not bright and dull at treble, because it's a bridge pickup ... Custombucker have more wider spectrum of sound. Both are awesome.
Weird, because i usually hate burstbuckers... But they win from the custom buckers in this video.

I remember that other vid with the original PAF...compared to the BB2 and Dimarzio.... the one thing I remember most, that KILLER special.. sustain for years.......Another great vid Johan. For me, I liked the BB2 over the Custom, but would love to hear these two with some gain?? ( hint hint ) Although the BB2 doesnt fill all my wants in a humbucker, I'm still on the search......

I swapped out Burstbucker pros in my '09 Standard because I thought that they sounded too muddy, even though they had a nice ring to them, same as both pickups here. I don't think they both sound really vintage, too much clarity and sharpness, imho. Still, not bad sounding pickups, but I would never go back from the pickups I have in my guitar atm: Stormy Mondays by Bareknuckle!
AscarinVin I have a set of the BK Stormy Mondays also. Great pickups, a bit softer than actual PAFs but work great for blues. If you really want exact PAF tones check out a set of OX4’s. Those things are tonal gems.
Yeah, I'm mostly a blues player, but a good driven '70s tone works well with the Stormy Monday's. I don't like the harsh picking attack a lot of modern guitars have so the SMs are perfect for me! Also the low output on the neck makes the best creamy tone I've heard with a driven amp!
AscarinVin trust me, we’re coming from pretty much the same neighborhood! I’m a massive Paul Kossoff fan, to me his tone is the ultimate sound. That’s why I love the OX4’s, great clarity, low wind, not a lot of harsh pick attack. The SM come very close but lack some of the overtones present in the OX4’s. Both are great pickups. If you ever get the chance though check out a set of the OX4 low-wind PAFs. They really sound incredible. I’ve tried nearly a dozen “PAF style” humbuckers from different winders and none come closer to my ears.
Already checked the website! And yeah, Paul Kossoff has tone to die for! 'Woman' still does it for me everytime!

The BB sounds potted and maybe a little hotter. Fuller low end for sure. CB sounds unpotted. More chimey and more twang. I was shocked how different they sounded.
The custom bucker is very futuristic!
Some small differences but they essentially have the same character. I could see someone preferring one if they don't want to need a pedal cut bass for a tighter sound but thats hardly something to get excited about in my opinion.

I'd be curious to see how the Collector's Choice series "Custom Buckers" compare to the standard R9 issue pickups. To my understanding all of the Custom Buckers are custom wound for that particular model, but with the CC series they are at least all Les Pauls. I have a 2013 "Transition Burst" R9, and recently acquired a "Donna" from the CC series. The guitars both sound great acoustically, but the neck pickup in the Donna has amazing clarity compared to the R9. It cuts just like a single coil. Any tone comparison with an overdriven amp also has to factor in the output level since a small difference in output can yield a big tonal change in the amplifier response.

while highly similar the custom sounded better, just a little groovier, more flow. it didn't interrupt or stop out the pleasure of the sound at all, while the bb sometimes did. so what it really seemed to me was that you played better with the custom. which still means a lot, because they don't play themselves.
Burstbuckers are clearer and have more definition. More PAF sound!!!

Custom Bucker seemed thin but airy, while BB2 sounded fat and bold. I would like to have heard it will more gain, because I can pick things out with clean that I like on both pickup but I think with gain you will see a bigger contrast.

Both are very good pickups. To my ear, the Burstbuckers sound ever so slightly more mid-ish. But I must admit I was quite pleasantly surprised, as I did not really like the first version of the BB's, too harsh for me. I 'd say they both play in the same court, it's a matter of preference for your own style: the Custom buckers are probably more subtle and articulate, the BB's having more thump. I use a custom bucker LP R9 from 2019 and have some other Gibsons with various Pickups. To me the Custom Bucker has the fullest sound from low end to high end without being shrill. The Custom Bucker has the best tone separation I've ever noticed on a pickup when playing open chords. I use the R9 Gibson often at Stoner Rock fuzz sounds and it does earth shaking sounds....much heavier than my other guitars. But I need to be careful as the pickups are not waxed....they whistle when much gain is called.
Your comparison is a good idea but I'm afraid the tone the amp and the speaker provides doesn't show the potential of the Custom Bucker. Sorry.
Looser bottom end on the burstbucker. Perhaps a little more upper mids/treble on the custombucker

Surprised me too.. I was expecting the Burstbucker to be more defined than the custom but in fact it's the other way around. . The Custom is more defined with less mid hump where the Burstbucker is a little more muted due to the mid hump which is often referred to as the Gibson Mud hump. For me the Custom would be my choice. Burtsbucker warmer and has more tonal range than Custombucker. It seems to be a comparison between Alnico II magnet and Ceramic magnet humbuckers...

Nice comparison. However, I would have liked to see more information. How does the resistance (ohm) compare between these two pickups? Additionally, I presume this video was only a comparison between the bridge pickups since I did not notice you playing the neck position of your '57 Les Paul. Thanks.
P.S. Check out the Doug and Pat Show on You Tube for their ongoing comparison of P.A.F. pickups in "Chasing Oscar." They also share all of their comparisons on their web site of the same name in, what I believe, is a MP3 format.
They both measure slightly over 8kOhm. And only bridge pickups were played. Cool, I’ll check out the Doug and Pat show video, they are great.
Maybe I was listening a tad too casually but I couldnt hear any major differences between the burst and ordinary ones?? What exactly should the differences be? Id guess a more distorted mic compared to the normal, clear one? Or maybe its more noticeable with a more distorted rock sound? Nice video though, as always! 😀

I normally don’t like the BBS. I’ve swapped out all my LPs with SDs or Dimarzio PAF. Masters. The BBS here sound good though.
what I recognized is that there is a huge differece between Gibson pu`s also when they got same designations. For example Burstbucker pro. I bought a Les Paul 2013 model from the faded series, and they are only good if you turn them to the maximum. And I have a Les Paul standard from 2017 with Burstbucker pro. There are lightyears between them. The pick ups from the standard are realy great, allready if you play with volume 4-5 and there is multifacetted sound, that the faded not got. (Sorry bout my english writing ;)

Custom sounds clearer, more consistent on the bass strings, burst, sounds a bit cheap,muted!

If you want to do an interesting pickup shootout try Tonerider Alnico Ii set vs. Gibson pickups. They are less than half the price of Seymour Duncans etc. Best sounding pickups I have used. Better than the Joe Bonamassa Custom Shop set I wasted my money on...........
