- What did you notice? Which did you like better?
2003 Gibson Les Paul Classic gets a pickup change! Decided to switch out the Custombuckers I installed for some Burstbucker 2 & 3's.
I ran it through my 1981 Marshall JMP 2204 and Marshall 1960ax with Greenbacks. Used my Sennheiser e906 and Tech Zone Audio Products Stellar X3 for mics. Drive and a touch of reverb is supplied by a Line 6 HX Effects.

not sure why I can't find a single comment or who thinks the custom buckers were better. Feel like I'm going crazy. I liked them a lot better.
This is a perfect example of how tone is subjective. The CB’s sound glorious!
@@tweedcouch Yeah, so full and beautiful. I understand that burstbuckers could cut through a mix. But I'm a humble bedroom guitarist, so I don't need no cut.
@@thomascleveland I could not love this comment more. You truly understand what music and guitar is all about.
Me too - so much smoother & richer!
Burstbuckers all the way.
Ya. I agree. That set in that guitar is perfect.
It depends on what music you play. The Custombucker is an excellent rock'n roll pickup and the Burstbucker 3 is suitable for heavy rock.
I love the BB for that big clean to mean sound. The CB are more for breakup to rock overdrive. At least for me and what I play.
2 of my all time Favorite Pickup sets.
It’s becoming mine too
I preferred the Burstbuckers in every clip.
I think the only position I wished I could still get is the both Custombucker sound.
Burstbuckers for sure
Agreed. Every time I plug it in I am glad I made the change.
I thought the Burstbucker bridge sounded best and the custom in the neck sounded best. This is what my ears heard. Thanks for the demo. Great quality of tone in your set up.
I likes the bigness I got from the BB2 in the neck but I liked the clarity I got from the CB3 neck. Thanks for the comment
Hey dude what model is your white falcon? i am hoping to get a Gretsch G6136T-55VS White Falcon. I love the G Cadilac tailpiece on it : )
The WF is a 2010 G6136T. I got a smoking deal on it. The 55VS is super sweet! I love a bigsby though. I've wanted a G6128T 57 Cadillac Green Duo Jet for years but I can't justify it. Here is the video I did on my Falcon: ua-cam.com/video/w-mAi9hN6fY/v-deo.html
Lately i have been finding Speaker swapping and using a variety of different cabinets makes a bigger difference in changing tone .
I use to swap cabs and speakers. Totally makes a difference. Tubes can be a game changer too. Especially the V1 preamp tube. When going digital I often run my guitars through a Quad Cortex for live stuff and IR’s and amp swapping in there is so easy.
Even the pick material makes a big difference
The BB2 and BB3 sound their best with the guitar straight in and no pedals . Especially pushing a cranked Amp . That is why Joe Bonamassa loved the BB2 and 3 before he started buying vintage guitars .
I just watched the Bonamassa documentary he made called “Guitar Man”. Great stuff.
I have the Burstbuckers in my Customshop ES335 and the Custombuckers in my brand new Customshop R9 All beautiful. Custombuckers Les Paul R9 7.76 Neck 7.78 Bridge, Burstbuckers ES335 7.36K Neck 7.68 Bridge. Some more pickups in my Les Paul '99 Standard 490R and the 498T 8k Neck 13k Bridge.
Hope this information is good to know : )
Thanks for sharing that info. I have a set of 490R, 496R, 498T, & 500T... Can't remember the outputs off hand but they are all hotter than these "PAF Style" pickups. They are also uncovered.
@@tweedcouch yeah the 490R and the 498T are the only wax potted sets and the covers are off.
@@tweedcouch i'm not sure what burstbuckers are in my ES335 it's from 2008 i think.
ah its "Gibson ES-335 Block (not the 1963) comes with Burstbucker 1 & 2"
So what if I put Gibson Custombuckers in a MIA Fender stratocaster HH?
Not sure if the HH Strat uses a 3 way or 5 way switch but the CB is only a 2 wire pickup. So you could only get 3 sounds. That said, I’m sure it would probably sound good.
Thanks for the comparison. Maybe I have a tin ear but pretty much in every PAF pickup shootout the differences are so subtle that it’s not worth fussing over
You are not wrong. Most PAF’s (especially in a mix) don’t sound much different.
hi, are those custombuckers underwound or just standard?
These are the standard set you’d find in the 2022 Custom Shops.
Custombuckers sounded better to me
I love how they cut in a mix. Thanks for sharing
There is no difference in the sound .This is my humble opinion .
Thanks for the opinion. I think a lot of PAF’s sound similar enough that in a band setting no one would know the difference.
Custombuckers are a little bit clearer but in the same ballparck yes. I owned a lot of Gibson (335/les Paul) with both and this is my conclusion
I still love Burstbuckers
I can hear a difference. Some people don't know their tone, Def. BB2,3 have more bite. And good midrange crunch. Custombuckers are clearer. Both are great. I like BB2,3.
I'm personally a fan of the BB 1s and 2s. Have a set of Seth Lovers (unpotted) in another SG-style guitar and wow, they're pretty special too. I'm dying to know what they would sound like in my Standard, but don't want to touch anything on it.
FWIW, I have the same BBs in another Les Paul, but uncovered. I don't know if it's the guitar (a Classic) or that they're uncovered, but I prefer the uncovered set a little more.
@@stratolestele7611I’ve had Antiquities (covered) and Seth Lovers (uncovered) in this Les Paul. I preferred the Seth Lover’s too.
