Gibson Custombuckers vs. Gibson Burstbucker 1 and 2
I'm using my 2011 les Paul R8.
Muleskinner Amps MS17 with a Paul C. Tim Overdrive always on.
G12-H30 70th Anniversary speaker.
EQ Cables.
Sennheiser 609 Mic about 4" away from the cab.
Lick 1/5: Guitar Volumes: Full
Lick 2/3: Guitar Volumes: 4
Lick 4: Guitar Volumes: 7
Custombuckers measure: 8.17k and 8.17k
Burstbucker 1 and 2 measure: 7.84k and 8.30k
Enjoy this one and more to come!
Different,
Got CBs in a 2014 R0 LP, clean full, warm.
And BBs in an 2004 R9, edgier, dirtier, attacking.
You answered my question,
Gonna keep em both.
Cheers!
I preferred the BB 1&2 here, thought the Custombuckers had a slightly unpleasant glassiness. Loving these shootouts mate.
Me too!!!
That’s the difference between a real PAF and these newer style pickups. Real Pafs are not as mid forward as these new pickups. But the pafs are clearer and what you have heard on almost every record from the 60’s-70’s
0:00 0:28
0:13 0:42
0:57 1:19
1:07 1:30

2:42 3:12

I had this on in the background and everytime I heard a sound I liked, looked at the screen. It was the custombucker every single time. Conclusive enough for me
Nice!!!
You can always add gain, but you can’t always add clarity. The Custombuckers hands down. If it’s too bright turn the treble down either on the amp or tone knobs. Burstbuckers are too dark for bell like clarity that pafs are known to produce.
id rather go with the custom. if i want a darker lower output tone, ill just turn down the tone and volume knobs
i kinda feel like people forget that, you can actually tinker with stuff. people who prefer the Ge fuzz face to the silicon don't realise that if you turn the volume all the way upon the Si you get a darker more midrange tone similar to Ge which you can't get a brighter higher gain tone from just the Ge
do people not realise these things? with the custom buckers, you know what the maximum amount of treble and output you can get from them is, and it's higher than the burstbuckers. all you gotta do is turn the tone and volume knob down guys
i prefer the brighter tone anyways, but if i wanted to get a tone to the burstbuckers i still could
Thanks for the video. I preferred the BB. I've played both in the stores, and in some guitars I preferred CB, others BB, but there wasn't a huge difference. I would up taking the 490/498/PCB out of my LP, put a 59 BB1 nickel cover in neck, and 59 BB1 double black (yes 1, not 2) in bridge. Both unpotted. And a 50s style harness/pots. My guitar is perfect now.
Glad you found what you wanted! Hope you subscribe!!!
THE BEST, TO THE POINT, MOST ACCURATE, PICKUP REVEIWING, ON YOU TUBE!!!! LOVE THIS CHANNEL! I BOUGHT 2 OF THE BEST SETS OF PAF STYLE HB'S I EVER HEARD, IN THE LAST COUPLE WEEKS BC OF THIS FUTURE AWARD WINNING CHANNEL! NO NONSENSE, GREAT PLAYING, TO THE POINT!
No i changed my mind i think i like the heaveness of the burstbuckers
I like both. Had a R7 with BB 1&2 that sounded amaze balls. Had a R8 with Custombuckers that was also incredible. BB neck is a little bassier/jazzier/vintage/muddy depending on your taste. But that's what they make T-Tops for. ; )
Burstbucker 1&2 all the way - that's what I run in my Les Paul. You want bright and sparkly - that's what Fenders are for 😁
Though I preferred the BB 1&2, the CB has a very bright single coilish tone which could be very useful in certain kinds of music. I expect they would be extremely effective for lead work in a band setting. Very interesting indeed Mr. Guy 😁👍
Exactly my thoughts. I play in a "frequency rich" environment with multiple musicians and singers. A Les Paul that cut's like a Tele is one of tones I need to be heard but not be 'Loud".
Real pafs are considered to be a tele on steroids. So you’re not wrong.
It seems like both sets are very similar. I like the Custombuckers just slightly better. They seem just a tiny bit more powerful to me. Personally, I think Gibson should just put a DiMarzio Super Distortion in the bridge of all their Les Pauls and SGs and live happily ever after.
That’s an option! Haha. Thanks again for watching! Cheers, Jim!
My pleasure, Visual Guy! I really enjoy your comparisons!!!
Not everybody plays rock. I play Jazz and Super Distortions would sound like crap for what I play.
Love the grittiness and harmonics of the BB 1 & 2
Cheers
They are really close...closer to each other than the '57 Classics where you can really tell the difference. Between these 2 I like the Custombuckers a little more, but I still prefer the '57 Classics over either.
The 57s are great in the right guitar. I can promise you though that in the R8, in real life, the 57s were too much lower midrange that couldn’t be adjusted out of the neck. At 8k, a2 magnets… the 57s never had the same amount of dynamic as the CB set. It is all guitar dependent, and I think if someone likes the 57s in real life more than other sets, they’ll like them in the video too. The videos, while useful only tell half the story. In real life, if you were there with me you’d have prob chosen the CBs too. Either way, the Antiquities win the whole process, so its all useless. 🤣🤣🤣
@@VisualGuy I have '57 Classics in an R7, an R9 and an ES-335. They sound great in each one of them. I like the way they respond to the way I play. Truth be told, I never played a guitar with Custombuckers. I really don't care for Burstbuckers. I don't feel the need to change what I have at all. I have a lot of experience with the '57 Classics and they are very sensitive to height adjustments. They definitely have a sweet spot that you need to find. Question: What year did Gibson introduce the Custombuckers?
Custombuckers officially released in 2012 I believe. And I have always enjoyed the 57s. I had them in an SG, 339, and a Les Paul Standard. But the R8, the huge neck.. it was already meaty. I prefer my pafs to be very clean, clear, and they fell short in real life compared to a few other sets… but the key is (in this guitar). After trying something like 100 sets, it all comes down to a compliment to the guitar and its acoustic properties.
@@VisualGuy My R9 has a huge neck, much fatter than my R6 or R7. I'm currently in the market for an R8 (to complete my collection) and may actually be buying one today! The best I ever heard '57 Classics sound was in a mid-90's '61 SG Reissue. I regret passing up that guitar...it was great. Yes, there are many factors that come into play with pickups.
Good luck on your search!
Thanks for this video.......very revealing. The CBs have a brighter tone that I prefer...........cheers.
Cheers!
The CB is Better for me, because It has more definition and attact... CB can sound more dark like a BB but not viceverse
This is true! Enjoy!
Surprisingly the BB 1+2 for me. They are way darker and full sounding. Should it not normally be the other way round?
I think CBs are intended to be brighter and less woody. I like the BB better too, and they are potted!
First thanks you for your great work here.
Got a 2019 standard 50’ LP with great BB 1&2. I am very happy with that set .
CB are great but expensive; it didn’t really make a great difference for that gap of price.
But anyway, I would be happy if I could try CB on my Les Paul just to feel the difference.
I play old blues jump blues, swing & jazz things.
CB seems to be the good choice for old styles.
I have to convince myself to drop money on that.
Thanks for watching!
I THINK THESE GET A BAD WRAP ABOUT TO CHANGE THEM FOR TYSON TONE IN A COUPLE MINUTES, BUT I ENJOYED THE BURST BUCKERS!
The CBs win on every level - so much character, colour, clarity and projection. They made the BBs sound dull and unresponsive to my ears.
Thanks for watching
@@VisualGuy I've heard many of your shootouts and they are very helpful and so consistent. Thank you.My only comment/request would be that, because you always play neck then bridge on the first guitar before moving on to the next, it's hard to compare neck with neck and bridge with bridge. I would find it so much better hearing neck vs neck then bridge vs bridge.
Yes everyone makes the same comment. Two browsers help. Then you can compare faster. Pr you can make chapters. If ai ever do it again, i’ll clip them neck/neck. Etc.
I came to the conclusion the BB1&2 are lower output and darker then the more forward and louder CB. The CB have more mid character, more push.
Great effort. Thanks!
Actually the BB1&2 are more mid forward. That’s why they are darker. The CB is actually as close as Gibson has gotten to real pafs since the real pafs. Real pafs are somewhat scooped in the mids. That’s why they are so much clearer and bell like.
Would be nice to play the exact same thing on either pickup😢
Thanks for the really informative video!
Thanks for watching!
CUSTOMS BEAT THE 57S HERE THOUGH, I WAS IMPRESSED WITH THE 57S, MAYBE HAD A GOOD SET..NEVER PLAYED THE CB;S
Made up my mind I just bought a chinese flying v the pick ups are garbage but it has korina wood so i will treat it to custombucker gibson , i may have to change out the potentiometers i think , custombuckers sound way better
You need two Les Pauls man…both are awesome😊
I had 3 at the time of making this video! 😀
BB All the way
I can't really tell the difference unless I listen carefully
0:00 0:13 0:28 0:42 0:57 1:07
1:19 1:30
Prefer the Custombuckers .
Thanks for watching!
Burstbuckers are rough unruly and unbalanced dullish sounding pickups but you can meet a great sounding set or rare occasion.. Custombuckets kill them!
You must own a set of Custombuckers! 😂
same
I like the bbs 1&2s better
Thanks for watching!
i prefer BB 1-2
Nice!
BBs, warmer, fatter...
Cool
A fack i dunno its too hard 😅
