    Your analysis is impressive and you understood perfectly what Lara was going thru when singing this masterpiece.
    2 comments Lara made about it in recent (2024) interviews:
    - Barbra Streisand organized a dinner with Lara (thru David Foster) and asked her what emotions she was connected to when singing it. Lara answered “to pain” and Barbra replied “Oh, it’s vast”
    - Lara gave more details in another interview and explained that she started to sing this song in 1991, and it became the song she used to expell all her negative emotions.

    “Je suis Malade”, now a french classic, was written by famous French singer & songwriter Serge Lama together with composer/singer Alice Dona in 1973.
    This is based on his own experience and he was the original performer, hence some lyrics are a bit male-oriented (eg my mother leaves me, whiskies, I pour my blood in your body, …).
    When Serge Lama had a dinner with Alice Dona and told her about his obsessive love that was leading to a road block, she came back home and composed the music in a couple of hours.
    The morning after, she presented him the music and he wrote the lyrics in … 20 minutes.
    Serge Lama was the original performer in 1973, it started to be promoted on the radio, and the song was brought to fame only when, a few months after, Dalida covered it. She was an absolute mega star in France, another emotional powerhouse, and this song resonated very much with her own feelings. Her success with this song transformed it into a french classic, and started to make it famous abroad.
    But it is Lara Fabian that really made this song a very popular song in many countries with her cover in the mid 90s.
    At that time Dalida had already passed away, but Serge Lama was (and is) still alive. Dalida and Serge were two inspirations for Lara, so she sent an audio copy to Serge of her version.
    She was unknown at that time in France but he was so impressed with her vocal skills and her emotions rendering that he invited her in France to sing it as a duet during his own Paris concert in January 1995. It was a triumph. So he sat in a front row seat and asked her to sing it again alone.
    Lara also had made some subtle changes to the song that gave it even more power. Serge and Lara became good friends and performed several other duets later on.
    The 1999 version ("From Lara with Love" Concert in Montreal)
    ua-cam.com/video/eHSyk4SGtuY/v-deo.html
    is legendary internationally and has attracted many artists to do a cover, even from non french-speaking countries.
    The most recent ones I am aware of are from italian singer Giulia Falcone, from the korean singer Choi Sung Hoon or from the korean band Forestella.
    Lara is used to perform the song very differently in each of her tour and for instance the En Toute Intimité, 2003, Paris Olympia version is even more dramatic

    Buonasera...

    As I said in my other comment, Dalida made Je suis malade famous first in France but also in Italy (she was italian).
    It was translated immediately in italian, the same year (1973), by Ornella Vanoni and it became “Sto Male”.
    Lara also sang this italian version when she had some concerts in Italy.

    beautifull reaction again! I recommend Yentl from the movie directed by Barbara Streisand. Lara performs the two main songs life as one big song. Something Barbara never did! Its a close to impossible thing to do, yet Lara does it as the master she is!

    Yes. Every performance a Master Class. No-one does Love & Loss with the fine nuance, and passion of Lara. How she rides that fine line vocally between conveying that depth of emotion and maintaining perfect control of every aspect:- of the dynamic structure, the colours and transitions she micro-manages, her flow, of every note; her pitch, straight tone, deliberate vibrato, is truly wonderful. Exceptional. Her immersion in the character and story-line is complete, and her acting is likewise subtle. Except when she then shocks us with that gesture; mimicking cutting her throat, and the vulnerability she expresses is 'everything'! Incomparable. 👋👋👋

    Too much discussion about "skin". Obviously it means not someone's skin but the touch on someone's skin and soul. Otherwise it doesn't make sense. Paolo you are one of the most analytic reactors. I subscribed at once. Take care. Greece ❤

    Perdonami, ma, riguardo l'espressione "avant ta peau", nei sottotitoli tradotta come "before your skin", mi pare debba escludersi che essa si riferisca - come invece hai detto - alla "sua pelle", ossia alla pelle dell'"io narrante-cantante", e cioè, in questo caso, di Lara Fabian.
    Difatti, il francese "ta", e così l'inglese "your", in italiano sta per "tua". Quindi, mi sembra chiaro che l'espressione si riferisca alla pelle dell'amato cui l'io narrante si rivolge direttamente (qui, come nell'intero brano).
    Peraltro, il significato dell'espressione, se tradotta letteralmente, appare oscuro. Potrebbe trattarsi, allora, di un'espressione idiomatica francese. Ma qui mi fermo, per lasciare eventualmente la parola, sul punto, ad un francese.

    • @PaoloBassotto
      @PaoloBassotto  6 місяців тому

      Giusta osservazione. Avevo capito che il testo si riferisce alla pelle dell'amato, ma io credo che il gesto di sfiorare la propria pelle che Lara ha fatto, sia stato fatto consciamente o inconsciamente, per trasferirci anche l'immagine visiva riferita alla pelle. Anche se, ovviamente, è solo una mia suggestione.

    • @emilioricciardi5078
      @emilioricciardi5078 6 місяців тому

      @@PaoloBassottoEd in effetti la trovo suggestione fascinosa, che però mi pare presupponga necessariamente che il significato della parola "peau", in quel contesto, sia letterale.
      Mentre continuo a ritenere sia che questa intepretazione appaia dubbia, perché se così fosse l'espressione in discussione risulterebbe pressoché priva di senso, sia, quindi, che l'ipotesi plausibile consista nel supporre trattarsi di senso figurato, e dunque di una frase idiomatica francese.
      Certo, sarebbe molto apprezzabile un intervento, in questa pagina, della stessa Lara Fabian, così da risolvere, auspicabilmente, questa questione ermeneutica.

    • @PaoloBassotto
      @PaoloBassotto  6 місяців тому

      @@emilioricciardi5078 In effetti il tuo punto di vista è condivisibile. E, come dici tu, probabilmente l'unica possibilità di determinare quale sia l'interpretazione più vicina alla realtà di quel momento, sarebbe l'intervento dell'artista.
