I loved him as a musician and as a friend, although it was brief. Only guy other than my dad who ever drove my hotrod 65 comet. He giggled as we dragged brookside one night.
Unreal reflection of a cosmic blip in time. I was a teenager and Leon and company was the sound track of my time. Often imitated but never duplicated. And many resurections.
When this movie came out I was a teenager working nights and weekends in a movie theater. I remember it had a three or four week run, so I probably watched it 30-50 times. Fantastic movie. The most sex and weed I've ever seen in a movie theater, and I'm talking about the audience. I became a fan of Leon and was able to catch him in concert for the first time that same year. Saw him 40 years later for the last time. He never really got the recognition he deserved.
Leon Russell was a left hand dominant piano player (due to a birth injury on the right side of his body) and it was, and still is a right hand dominant world out there for piano players. He went his own way a lot because of this, look up the live version of 'You girl' on the paradise show! He had a masterful awareness of time and space as they often said.
It's impossible to compliment this genius enough. My favorite line from any of his songs? "Stray dogs that walk on the highway walk on three legs; they learn too slow to get the message," from Ballad for a Soldier.
It's just fucking impossible to find video footage of him just singing this without the "help of his friends." I appreciate all that stuff, but enough with the hippy shit all over the stage jamboree. SO frustrating that there's not simple footage of the simple ballads, without all the congregation stuff.

What a song. I've heard it a few times before but really GOT IT today. Pure genius!

You were a master wordsmith Mr. Leon. And yet, there are no words to describe you. There will never be another…🙏🏻❤️
Sheer poetry. And then you add the music. There will only ever be one Leon Russell. Thank you, Leon for all the music and love you gave.
