From way back too, he was so scary in the Dirty Harry movie where played "Scorpio" and his acting has such a flair of it's own. I was happy to see him so much on DS9
I think his best DS9 moment was during the episode about the fake data rod presented to the Romulan Ambassador, where Sisko barges in and slaps Garak, then Garak goes on and reveals what he had planned all along, it was even more genius than I thought in the beginning.
Andy Robinson played my most favorite character in all of Star Trek: Elim Garak Simply the best, most complicated, intriguing and beguiling character ever written for and acted on Star Trek Deep Space Nine!!!
He was probably one of the best characters made on TV period. How many other characters on TV can compare or exceed the complexity and entertainment of Robinson's character? Very few.
Oh yeah. He was the hinge of it all. He gave Worf reason to exist on DS9, creating Martok at the same time He gave Quark humanity, very few things on DS9 didn't develop without his involvement. He saved the show.
I always like the character Elim Garak, and now after watching this interview, I like the actor Andrew J. Robinson, just as much. He never forgets to thank his audience. Nowadays too many entertainers forget to appreciate that its the fans that get them to where they are.
Garak was a gem in this series, especially in the episode pale moon-light, it drew on all of Garak's dark skills to bring the Romulan's into the war...a truly great character superbly portrayed by Andrew Robinson.
I've met him at 3 cons, incLFCC this year, and he was kind, funny and a real sweetie,he remembered me from prev cons, even remembered my name. He's a great actor and a real inspiration.i hope I can meet him again one day,a really great guy.Jenny.
Seeing this interview is the first time I've seen him as anything other than Garak, that I can remember. I have to say it REALLY makes me appreciate how well he played the character, because at first glance/hear it's really hard to even tell it is actually him. My favorite DS9 character, though. Without question.
When Garrick appeared in an episode there always was an anticipation. You never knew if he was telling the truth, who he would align himself with, who he would betray, what ends justify the means explanation he was gonna have, and most importantly what his play, deception, and intentions really were. Such an amazing character portrayed by a fantastic actor.
His book "A Stitch in Time" based on his character was Really great the writing, the background on Elim Garak was considered to be one Of the best, especially from one of the actors😉👾
I salute Andrew Robinson and all the supporting character actors on DS9, They enriched the world of DS9 as much as the main actors on series did. 😎🤓👍👏👏👏
For many years this guy creeped me out as Scorpio. Then it was so refreshing to see him in other roles and to see the real life interviews with him. What a great guy... so down to earth and pleasant. Such a great actor too considering he really sold Scorpio as one of the most unlikable villains in film history.
Garak scared the crap out of me at first. There were alarms ringing in my head and I didn't trust him at all. After seeing him a few times I finally placed him as the villain in the first Dirty Harry movie. After that I still didn't know what to make of Garak, but his character became more fun for me. Turned out to be one of the best characters on the show. Fantastic actor!
He added great depth and intrigue to the show. Played a hard to understand, very grey, is he/ is he not trust worthy. Pale Blue Moonlight is top 10 because of the writing and Cisco's moral dilemma. Cast was great all around, but Garak was the most imaginative.
@Cl0ckcl0ck As an actor/actress you're kind of damned if you do and damned if you don't. Play a character too well and you get typecasted, but put in a half hearted performance and you get forgotten.
This guy was in the very first Spider-Man movie, he was in The A-Team, he was in the first Dirty Harry kickass film, and he plays one of the top three greatest characters in Star Trek. I mean fuk there should be some kind of Award of excellence for him. He would be perfect as any character written for him on The Blacklist
I recall an interview in which he said that he was out of work for years, after being typecast as a psycho-killer via his psycho-killer role in the first of the Dirty Harry movies. Garak's makeup gave him something to hide behind :-)
He's just the absolute best. Garak, brilliantly played as he was, legitimises this series above all the others as something which isn't just cowboys with ray guns but demonstrates how scifi can mirror real experiences, people and life. If I needed an example of why scifi isn't just about space wizards but can be about people, I'd show them an episode with Garak.
I cannot believe the interviewer did not ask Mr. Robinson about the fan favourite pairing of Garak and Bashir! That was one of my favourite DS9 slash pairings! ^.^
Loved your character, he was so good and so bad, never knew where he stood. Garak made a great character, wish DS9 could of went on a few seasons longer.
Let's face it when Garak came along he changed everything! By far the best character in Star Trek including Khan! Although Dukat was amazing too. DS9 and Voyager just kicked ST:TNG ass.
@@pywacket80 No, I definitely meant that someone in their seventies generally doesn't look like an old fogey yet. (aka, someone in their 80's) He looks about right for his age.
I think the final question, in every interview with DS9 cast members, should have been "if a reasonable opportunity, with the right script came along, to make you that character again, for a season of TV, or a special, or a movie (but not a 7 year commitment) would you ever want to put on that character again, and be them again?"
Andrew Robinson was superb in the role and it was a shame that he never received star billing in the opening credits, as he was easily as essential to the series as Shimerman and Meaney. A pity that he wasn't sold on the Mirror Universe Garak scriptwriting though - I don't think the MU episodes were ever meant to be deep or meaningful, they were just simple, old-fashioned fun and he had a wonderful master/servant comedy dynamic going with Michael Dorn.
HE GAVE A OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE AS THE SCORPIO KILLER IN THE 1971 FILM DIRTY HARRY WITH CLINT EASTWOOD A REAL REAL SCARY CHARACTER WHAT A SUPER NICE NICE MAN HE IS IN REAL LIFE AND ONE GREAT GREAT ACTOR HE SHOULD HAVE WON AN ACADEMY AWARD FOR BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR IN HIS ROLE AS THE SCORPIO KILLER IN THE FILM DIRTY HARRY ONE GREAT GREAT ACTING PERFORMANCE.
yea I remember Mr. Robinson in Dirty Harry and a few other T.V. shows he also played liberace which I thought was dead on ....a great and under rated actor
He should've gotten an emmy nomination for that role.
Yeh really. I believe his character really held a large part of the ds9 structure together 👍
From way back too, he was so scary in the Dirty Harry movie where played "Scorpio" and his acting has such a flair of it's own. I was happy to see him so much on DS9
No kidding!! Scary indeed!!!
Garak is EASILY one of the top 5 characters in the entire Star Trek canon
I think his best DS9 moment was during the episode about the fake data rod presented to the Romulan Ambassador, where Sisko barges in and slaps Garak, then Garak goes on and reveals what he had planned all along, it was even more genius than I thought in the beginning.
He was brilliant as Garak!
Andy Robinson played my most favorite character in all of Star Trek:
Elim Garak
Simply the best, most complicated, intriguing and beguiling character ever written for and acted on Star Trek Deep Space Nine!!!
He was probably one of the best characters made on TV period. How many other characters on TV can compare or exceed the complexity and entertainment of Robinson's character? Very few.
+jarednil69 Dude, YES! He was so elegantly sarcastic sometimes, maintaining a constant air of mystery. I LOVE Garak. Great character!
jarednil69 - read the book *Robinson* wrote?
Oh yeah. He was the hinge of it all. He gave Worf reason to exist on DS9, creating Martok at the same time
He gave Quark humanity, very few things on DS9 didn't develop without his involvement. He saved the show.
He was simple tailor
Andrew Robinson is a great actor, I loved the way he portrayed Garak, he had so many layers it was a fantastic performance.
Loved Garak. I could never tell whether he was lying or telling the truth.
I really like that Garak wasn't on one side or the other. He was on his OWN side. And of course, Andy Robinson played him to perfection! SCORPIO!!
I think Garak was definitely one of the most interesting of all characters in the star trek universe.
Without question. A very complex character.
I always like the character Elim Garak, and now after watching this interview, I like the actor Andrew J. Robinson, just as much. He never forgets to thank his audience. Nowadays too many entertainers forget to appreciate that its the fans that get them to where they are.
He's great. He did a Cameo for me recently.
Garak, the real Tinker, Tailor, Spy
Skipper - his character was literally based off of the *LeCarre* novel *”Tinker, tailor, soldier, spy”* so yeah...
easily one of Star Trek's greatest kept secrets/greatest characters
Garak was a gem in this series, especially in the episode pale moon-light, it drew on all of Garak's dark skills to bring the Romulan's into the war...a truly great character superbly portrayed by Andrew Robinson.
If Garak was in it, I knew it was going to be good.

" In The Pale Moonlight " is my favourite ever Trek episode because of Andrew Robinson.
Thank you Sir! You & the rest of the cast of DS9 have given me a great place to escape too!
What a charming a fun guy. Definitely one of my favorites on DS9.
such a wonderful guy and a wonderful actor
Best character in Star Trek! He was the best!
Yes he is awesome!
They should give him EVERY award for portraying Garak. He WAS that character.
His eloquence and ability to equivocate and obfuscate was a joy to watch!
When Garrick appeared in an episode there always was an anticipation. Love this comment, so well said.
His name is Garak 😊 (the character)
His book "A Stitch in Time" based on his character was Really great the writing, the background on Elim Garak was considered to be one
Of the best, especially from one of the actors😉👾
+Liz Moore I agree, his book was fantastic, a very cerebral look into the history of the Garak character.
Its a great book I've read it twice.
It truly is a great book. I read it about 15 years ago and am going to read it again
I salute Andrew Robinson and all the supporting character actors on DS9, They enriched the world of DS9 as much as the main actors on series did. 😎🤓👍👏👏👏
He still has the Garak laugh:)
Garak looks so weird as a human.
Change him back, Julian!
He kinda reminds me of Robert Englund☺
Well, he played Larry/Frank Cotton in HELLRAISER.
For many years this guy creeped me out as Scorpio. Then it was so refreshing to see him in other roles and to see the real life interviews with him. What a great guy... so down to earth and pleasant. Such a great actor too considering he really sold Scorpio as one of the most unlikable villains in film history.
Most humans looks weird as humans.
Andrew's performance is what made me fall in love with ds9

I came to trust Garrak. I trust Garak to be Garak.
@@mikahael1 you can always trust an untrustworthy man to be untrustworthy, it's the seemingly trustworthy ones you have to watch out for.
How many remember Andrew Robinson from Dirty Harry?
Hellraiser anyone? He was terrific in it.
Wait.. you are telling me that the punk who gets shot by Clint is... HIM?
I haven't watched any of Dirty Harry movies.. perhaps I should do it. lol
+Pen_Joey Start with Dirty Harry.
Q His role as scorpio in dirty harry was the very first film I saw him in.
How about Hellraiser?
I can't believe he is 71............wow
You know a show is good when, after all these years, it still gets knew fans, people love the acting, the stories most of all.
It was my 15th birthday when this was published :) Andrew Robinson is one of my favorite people.
Garak is the best character in DS9 and in the top 3 of all of Star Trek. Andrew Robinson nailed that role.
Dirty Harry would not have been such a great success without Andy Robinson as scorpio. His acting was so chilling and realistic.
And it cost the actor that the audience was so dumb.
@Cl0ckcl0ck As an actor/actress you're kind of damned if you do and damned if you don't. Play a character too well and you get typecasted, but put in a half hearted performance and you get forgotten.
Yeah, he was the unsung hero, he should've gotten an academy award.
Especially the lies! Great Job Mr. Robinson
Garak is teaching?! If I were seeking a career in acting I'd line up for his course!
+Xepthrichros I wish I could afford something like that!
This guy was in the very first Spider-Man movie, he was in The A-Team, he was in the first Dirty Harry kickass film, and he plays one of the top three greatest characters in Star Trek. My favorite character: Elim Garak - Best Episode: In the Pale Moonlight.
Mark Jackson
It's a faaaaake!
Yeessss... fave episode.
Great in Hellraiser too. Favourite char on the show. Thanks for your contributions Andrew.
You are awesome! And I loved the character Garak as well...a man who can sew! :-)
such an incredible actor. He acted in the theater before like Patrick Stewart.
amazing actor, Garak may have been my favorite DS9 character and thats really saying something given how phenomenal that cast was!
Garak was "grey morality" personified.
he was my favorite one.. such a complicated character, so many layers, so deep and emotional..
What a great guy, thank you, Mr. Robinson.
Garak was always my favorite
I recall an interview in which he said that he was out of work for years, after being typecast as a psycho-killer via his psycho-killer role in the first of the Dirty Harry movies. Garak's makeup gave him something to hide behind :-)
True.
Yes Andy Robinson played my most favorite character in all of Star Trek:
Elim Garak but he was the bad guy in Dirty Harry too ...
Garak was the best written character in scifi history. Andrew J Robinson is an amazing actor!
Love your screen name, Mr. Hindsight Prophet. And agree with you on Mr. Robinson's excellence as an actor!
We NEED an audio book!!
A Stitch in Time
He's just the absolute best. Brilliantly said! I hope you take up script-writing.
The best character
Garak is my favorite DS9 character.
Cast this guy in everything.
I cannot believe the interviewer did not ask Mr. Robinson about the fan favourite pairing of Garak and Bashir! That was one of my favourite DS9 slash pairings! ^.^
I met him in Dublin in 2000. Incredibly nice man.
Garak was the best character on DS9
Loved your character, he was so good and so bad, never knew where he stood. Garak made a great character, wish DS9 could of went on a few seasons longer.
Along with Duket, Damar and Odo he was hands down my favorite character.
Let's face it when Garak came along he changed everything! By far the best character in Star Trek including Khan!
Although Dukat was amazing too. DS9 and Voyager just kicked ST:TNG ass.
Voyager was almost entirely awful. Save a couple of episodes like Year of Hell and Equinox, it was painful to watch. DS9 is another plane.
Your welcome, Garak! We will always support Start Trek!
71 and he looks like he's late 50s.
He doesn't sound like Garak anymore... :(
@@magicstix0r He never did, it's acting, he put on that voice to get into character.
People in their early 70's don't look like octogenarians, generally.
@@rafetizer I believe you mean septuagenarians. Octogenarians are in their eighties.
@@pywacket80 No, I definitely meant that someone in their seventies generally doesn't look like an old fogey yet. (aka, someone in their 80's) He looks about right for his age.
One of my favorite characters on the show. Awesome performer!
Garek was one of the best roles in DS9!
Excellent actor- he played Garak so well. Had some great lines and storylines.
Thanks, Andy. Improbable Cause/The Die Is Cast, hell yeah. Stellar.
If they ever make a Stan Lee biopic, Mr. Robinson is a shoe in for the part. He sounds and even looks like Marvel's beloved creator.
Ha ha. I thought this was going to be a video about Stan Lee at first, before I read the title.
Should have gotten an Emmy... At lot of actors/actresses had Emmy winning performances in this show
Garak was a great character, he was the kind of person you loved to hate, but knew he would be there when it counted..
i could not believe it was him when i found out he was in dirty harry, brilliant makeup and acting.
the pale moonlight episode was one of my favorite star trek episodes.
God, Garak was such a good character in a show full of good characters
I think the final question, in every interview with DS9 cast members, should have been "if a reasonable opportunity, with the right script came along, to make you that character again, for a season of TV, or a special, or a movie (but not a 7 year commitment) would you ever want to put on that character again, and be them again?"
I wish he was my dad !!! He is so cool.
He was absolutely brilliantly psycho in Dirty Harry.
I had my first professional inteeview with Andy Robinson back in 1973. Such a great charactor actor.
Love how at 4:20 he calls him “Dr Bashir” and names him first as they had a lot of fun together.
Andrew Robinson was superb in the role and it was a shame that he never received star billing in the opening credits, as he was easily as essential to the series as Shimerman and Meaney. He had such depth!
One of my favorite moments is when he made ezri dax cry.
He's a smart, kind guy. Read his book STEPPING INTO THE LIGHT to find out how he caught the acting bug.
He was Garak, the Cardassian tailor.
Just plain, simple Garak nothing but a tailor? Or was he a spy, saboteur and assassin with IMPECCABLY bad humor?
***** Or a double agent? Think about it.
willminkorea2010 Mm, no. Not at all.
A simple tailor.
I thought he was a gardener.
What a cool dude.
Andrew Robinson is a treasure!
I loved Garak. He didn't have a Cardassian mentality. If he didn't look Cardassian you wouldn't know that he was.

Such a good actor, such a good character.
Andy Robinson is a wonderful actor!
yea I remember Mr. Robinson in Dirty Harry and a few other T.V. shows he also played liberace which I thought was dead on ....a great and under rated actor
He also authored a full length novel about Garak :D
One of my favorite lines ever came from Garak, “Why tell the truth when a lie will do?”
ANDY!!! The BEST EVER and Garak a legend spy.
wanted a spin off series for his character, that would have been good, had it used the same writers
Such a series would play out like James Bond or Mission Impossible, with new and different planets being the backdrop for his"assignments"..
His semblance, expressions and talks as Garak always did reminds me to Liberace
I believe he played the part of Liberace in a movie
His hair and beard look scruffy here due to the Theatre role he was playing over the summer.
He's the best character in DS9
he loves the 'Garak Episodes', as do I :)
Very grateful down to earth guy.
Instead of Worf, Andy Robinson should've been bumped up into the main titles for his wonderfully slimy creation of Garak!
Brilliant Actor
What a prince. Very gracious.
I liked his role , And he was goooood
