Man, he's so right about the recurring characters feeling like they're always there. Out of the 173 episodes: Rom was only in 37 episodes Nog - 47 Garak - 37 Dukat - 35 In my mind I always thought of these characters being in mostly every episode.
I've been rewatching the series and have just watched "To the Death", an episode near the end of the fourth season. It's the first episode featuring Weyoun, and yet I remember him as being in almost every other episode later on.
admiralcaptaincommodoresir kangaroo I made the statement referring to his off screen personality. Going by his interviews and fan stories about meeting him personally, he seems well..kind and humble. Actors aren't paid to act off screen, and some are notoriously impatient and condescending to fans and media.
Cosmic Rogue Honestly, I've seen so many people fawning over their favorite actors that i'm pretty sure they act adorable and nice just for the sake of media out reach. I mean I'm not trying to insult anyone personally, but it's better to be cynical with things like this imo. You gotta look at who has to gain what. Thanks for the mature reply btw
+Buraaq Alrawi "but it's better to be cynical with things like this imo" Why, it's looking up to someone, it's admiring a trait you think is good. It's a good influence. What does it matter if he may be different elsewhere. What would that affect, other than the way someone feels? Is it bad to have a good influence, and only be cynical, especially in a situation like this? I find that being cynical isn't always a "bad" this, but here it seems pointless.
At a convention last year with my buddy, I saw Max walking by us in one of the hallways and - not wanting to bother him too much - just kind of said "Hi Max, you did a great job as Rom!" while he passed by. Well to our surprise, he stopped and turned around and came over and talked to us for a while! Recently I'd been showing DS9 to my daughter and I told him how we both really liked Rom and what a great show DS9 is. The look on his face was gold: It looked like it really meant a lot to him, to know that the show's still being enjoyed by 'The Next Generation' (sorry, had to say it haha). And then the next day I got to take a picture with him in costume, a picture which still hangs on my living room wall, much to my wife's chagrin haha.
OMG! I LOVE ROM! A wonderful and dynamic character that surprised me on SO many levels. I love how he finally got out of Quark's shadow and stood on his own, getting an engineering job at the Station. His idea for the replicated mine field to keep the Dominion fleet from coming through the wormhole was GENIUS, because Rom was a genius. :)
Rom is one of my favorite parts of ds9 he wasn’t too much, like he could have been. Nog was great as well! He was a Wesley done right. I think rom was always included at the right time and they knew how to use him as a character. In the first season rom was such a different character than in season 5 (where I’m at now) there could very well be a secret third brother because they were so different. Lol
Bas L, they'll regret it when they die, and spend the afterlife in the Vault of Eternal Destitution. But they'll have the company of four more downvoters at least!
He made Rom so lovable. In the first couple of episodes, you would have wrote Rom off as a simple fool. But there was so much more to him and even a shy genius to him. He appeared in so few episodes but he always felt so present.
Carl Knight Couldn't agree more. Garak, Rom, Martok, Dukat, Weyoun, Damar, Kai Winn. Basically DS9's second string is roughly 10x better than Voyager's main cast.
I absolutely agree. And the fact that nog matured throughout the series and then chose to join Starfleet instead of following ferengi tradition was believable because of being Rom’s son. I was almost annoyed to see Ferengi characters on the show in the first few episodes but I grew to love Nog and Rom quickly. And eventually Quark as well, but Rom and Nog will always be two of my favorite characters of the series.
I have to say that I had a problem with Rom in the beginning. It was that bottom tooth that went sideways that bugged me. But I love Rom now. It is great to see the Rom character develop over time. Thank you Mr. Grodenchik, for your portrayal of Rom.
hah i know! the reason i'm watching this video is i just saw DSN and was like... man i HAVE to see that actor without makeup.. i bet he looks the same/ish .. UNIQUE looking individual to say the least... great actor.
I'm so happy there are interviews on Max because I like Rom's character. He is so sweet and humble. I freaking loved when he stood by Nog's decision to make it to Starfleet. I cried
I used to work for an accounting firm. One of the senior accountants used to quote the Rules of Acquisition to his clients, especially No.1 "As soon as you have their money, never give it back" 😅
Rom trying to ask out Leela in Dr Bashir, I Presume is one of my favourite scenes. also rom and quark getting lost in the jefferies tubes and ending up in sisko's office.
Based on that interview, I have decided that this is a genuinely nice guy, and would be someone I would absolutely hang out with if he was my neighbor. Anyway, after watching this interview, I immediately went on Netflix to watch the episode he was talking about where Quark attempts to sabotage NOG's Starfleet entrance test. For those interested, it's called "Facets" (from season 3, episode 25). JW3HH
The genius of Mr. Grodénchik's portrayal of Rom was how Rom was allowed to grow in totally believable ways. Rom stayed Rom as he expanded into a more forceful relationship with Quark. Well done!
Fun fact about the word "Muuuuuugiiiiiiiiiiie", it is a Frisian word and like in DS9, it means Mother too (Frisian is a language spoken in the north of the Netherlands).
"I'm humbled by the idea that somebody might have liked me", yes sir, your character mr. Rom was awesome, very lovable character. Well done mr. Grodenchik.
But Rom developed from the first episode and became lovable. Everyone saw him as the underdog of Quark and loved it when he came into his own! It was lovely to see the transformation. Did I say was....I watch DS9 over and over again I almost know the script!
I gotta be honest, this video is the first time I've ever seen Max Grodenchik NOT in his Rom prosthetics. I think he's a pretty good lookin' guy! Too bad we didn't see him play Rom's 1950s human counterpart in "Far Beyond the Stars." I would've liked to have seen what his character would've been in that episode.
I got tired of seeing Quark pushing Rom around all the time. He should have stood up to him more thru out the series. But, my favorite episode with all three and Odo is Little Green Men. Simply hysterical. Odo was a dog most of the time.
Like so many I am watching the series again. I just wonder how or who developed the voice he used. He had a regular speaking voice the first few episodes then he got into 'Character".
In an episode named “The Magnificent Ferengi”, Grodénchik's character Rom says the word “No!” three times with ascending emotion, and he sounds like the freaking Hound of the Baskervilles! Just another wonderful detail.
Loved Rom and that he got to stand up for Nog and win. Rom made a meteoric rise all the way to Grand Nagus! I would say that Rom was an unsung hero several times. He contributed a great deal to the ensemble.
Rom was the most likeable character on DS9 for me. He started off as a 'generic' ferengi and turned into a sweet, smart and likable guy. I was attracted to his personality quite a bit.
So, Armin doesn't know any rules except first one, and his character doesn't make good Grand Nagus. But Max knows rules very well, and his character was appointed. That is interesting.
Watching TNG right before jumping into DS9, i took quite some time to get into this series, and even considered to stop watching it at all. But in the end, when it was the stories and the bright future that i loved in TNG which kept me watching it back than, now i kept watching DS9 because of those great characters. And while i love Garak and Gul Dukat, it where the characters of Rom and Nog which made me cheer the most. I just smile everyime i see the character of Rom, because i now it will be a good episode :)
I was sad we never got to see a human version of him in the far beyond the stars episode. Loves Rom I connected with him on "family thinks he'S an idiot" really struck a chord
I love how in Season 1 (or 2?), Odo says that Rom was so stupid he could not fix a bent straw but then he turns out to have a high aptitude for mechanics...was that intentional or an oversight by the writers?
They asked him if he enjoyed being on the show. They want to know he loved doing what they love being a part of. It hurts when you find out someone miserable made something you love, especially if the misery is unjust.

Mooooogiiieeeeeeeee
Daniela Rodríguez Careri I love how he says that! Too adorable!!!
My thoughts exactly!
Man, he's so right about the recurring characters feeling like they're always there.
Out of the 173 episodes:
Rom was only in 37 episodes
Nog - 47
Garak - 37
Dukat - 35
In my mind I always thought of these characters being in mostly every episode.
wow! I would swear he was in at half!
Wasn't Q only in like 8 episodes of TNG?
I've been rewatching the series and have just watched "To the Death", an episode near the end of the fourth season. It's the first episode featuring Weyoun, and yet I remember him as being in almost every other episode later on.
Omg is that true??? That makes me feel so bad because I feel Rom is in all episodes. I like Rom and I'm so sad now he is just in 37 episodes...
that is 37 to meany rom sucked stupid
Max Grodénchik seems like an extremely humble and kind human being.
+Cosmic Rogue I know right? I always thought he had kind eyes.
+Cosmic Rogue He's an actor. It's what he's paid to do.
admiralcaptaincommodoresir kangaroo I made the statement referring to his off screen personality. Going by his interviews and fan stories about meeting him personally, he seems well..kind and humble. Great story friend!
LOL. Tell your wife it could be worse, it could have been a Writ of Accountability from the IRS, I mean FCA...
there wasn't enough Rom on the show
i just recently rented disc one and watched the pilot and the other two episodes in two days. It made me miss when the show was on tv
Vivzid u can watch the whole series on Netflix.
In some ways I would have liked to see a spin off of some kind with Ferrengi's.
Rom hit the jackpot when he married Leeta.
OMG! :)
And he got a sexy Bajoran woman as a wife to boot....life was definitely good to Rom ;D
Right! Hehehe!
Yup...that's all us grade-A men want out of life....good job that we enjoy and a good woman to hold at night ;D LOL
Rom is one of my favorite parts of ds9 he wasn’t too much, like he could have been. Nog was great as well! He was a Wesley done right. I enjoyed watching this interview with Max Grodénchik. He seems to be a kind and gentle soul. He did a phenomenal job of playing Rom.
All hail Grand Nagus Rom !!!!
Christopher O'Neil Agreed!
he truly shined in that episode, in Quarks dream it was i believe. ?
Perhaps the 2 people who disliked this video should spend a night in Odo's security office.
Bas L, they'll regret it when they die, and spend the afterlife in the Vault of Eternal Destitution. But they'll have the company of four more downvoters at least!
Hillarious!! Ha HAAAAAAA
Odo's voice* "...Or a holding cell."
RIP Rene
There is NO way that Rom as a character was fleshed out before they cast this guy. He IS the character.
I have had beers with Max 3 times at different conventions, he is a great guy.
He made Rom so lovable. In the first couple of episodes, you would have wrote Rom off as a simple fool. But there was so much more to him and even a shy genius to him. He appeared in so few episodes but he always felt so present.
"Workers of the world, unite! You have nothing to lose but your chains!" - Rom
This interview really captures the warmth of Max Grodenchik. All of these brief interviews are excellent! Thank you for these.
He stammers just like Rom :-)
it's so cuuuute!
I just started watching ds9. Rom is one of my fav chars
@@a.g.5569 Me too
Also very similar mannerisms.
I love Rom, his gentleness is just a joy. He was definately up there with my favourite characters.
Max Grodénchik has a point one of the things that made Deep Space Nine a success was the recurring characters.
I actually think the recurring characters were actually the most interesting characters.
Carl Knight Couldn't agree more. Garak, Rom, Martok, Dukat, Weyoun, Damar, Kai Winn. Basically DS9's second string is roughly 10x better than Voyager's main cast.
@@DelDuio oh hell yes on that one!
Rom was an amazing Character. Max was a talented actor, they all were on DS9
The Ferengi that broke his whole species out of a niche. Highly underrated character. Masterfully portraited.
The man knows his Rules of Acquisition.
that's so sweet!
Quark knows only the first rule.
Max is such a super cool guy!
I have to say that I had a problem with Rom in the beginning. It was that bottom tooth that went sideways that bugged me. But I love Rom now. It is great to see the Rom character develop over time. Thank you Mr. Grodenchik, for your portrayal of Rom.
ROM! He looks Ferrengi even without make-up
Damn, I'm so glad I'm not the first person to think/say that. Phew.
hah i know! the reason i'm watching this video is i just saw DSN and was like... man i HAVE to see that actor without makeup.. i bet he looks the same/ish .. UNIQUE looking individual to say the least... great actor.
I'm so happy there are interviews on Max because I like Rom's character. He is so sweet and humble. I freaking loved when he stood by Nog's decision to make it to Starfleet. I cried
As it turned out Rom comes from the back to be an mechanical genius , has all the right skills to do all the right jobs, and the best ethics:)
I recently found out that he is my relative who actually came to visit before I was born, I swear this is a small world
Wow, I always wondered how much of the voice he did was his own voice... apparently almost nothing at all, great acting!
I used to work for an accounting firm. One of the senior accountants used to quote the Rules of Acquisition to his clients, especially No.1 "As soon as you have their money, never give it back" 😅
That wasn't to advise his clients to be greedy, more to be wary of unscrupulous business partners.
Rom trying to ask out Leela in Dr Bashir, I Presume is one of my favourite scenes. also rom and quark getting lost in the jefferies tubes and ending up in sisko's office.
DS9 had the best recurring characters out of all the Star Trek shows.
Great fun actor and super personality. Long live Rom!! LOL..Would like to meet Max.
Rom was one of the best characters in the whole Star Trek universe. Great acting!!
Based on that interview, I have decided that this is a genuinely nice guy, and would be someone I would absolutely hang out with if he was my neighbor.

My favorite episode with Rom was when he said said, self replicating Mine fields..
The genius of Mr. Grodénchik's portrayal of Rom was how Rom was allowed to grow in totally believable ways. Rom stayed Rom as he expanded into a more forceful relationship with Quark. Well done!
Muuuuuugiiiiiiiiiie!
lol
Fun fact about the word "Muuuuuugiiiiiiiiiiie", it is a Frisian word and like in DS9, it means Mother too (Frisian is a language spoken in the north of the Netherlands).
Thanks Max! You were an important cast member that everyone loved!
I can see the mannerisms of Rom in this interview. Seems as though he brought his own real life to the character.

Very funny character. Laughed when he said they got one scene in one take and he was ‘upset’ by that. Ha!
What he wants to say but miss a description for: They roleplayed instead of "just acted".
You were one of the reasons why I enjoyed the show! Thanks!
The Grand Nagus!
One of my all time favorite Star Trek characters. It takes real talent to portray believable and loveable stupidity.
Max / Rom, please know, you were 1000000% one of the things I, and thousands of others, liked MOST about my very favourite show in the universe =)
The writing and acting was so great that I watch it every day.
I got tired of seeing Quark pushing Rom around all the time. He should have stood up to him more thru out the series. But, my favorite episode with all three and Odo is Little Green Men. Simply hysterical. Odo was a dog most of the time.
+lifeishooey I love that episode! When they went back in time, hehehe. Great stuff.
"We're all gonna diiiiiiiieee..."
"Hi Rom"
"Hello, Leeta"
"Bye........."
Leeta: 😶
This was refreshing. I really miss shows like Star Trek.
OMG I looked at him and thought Rom. Loved what he did, thank you Max. It was a great show.
Man I always loved his character and his interview is the coolest thing to watch ever!
Max really has the lobes.
Max Grodenchik is awesome
Like so many I am watching the series again. I just wonder how or who developed the voice he used. He had a regular speaking voice the first few episodes then he got into 'Character".
Yes, I noticed that too
Rom was awesome! A simple and funny charachter.
+CIarKent Yup! It's quiet amazing. Same can go for Nana Visitor
lol he doesnt seem far off from his rom character.
In an episode named “The Magnificent Ferengi”, Grodénchik's character Rom says the word “No!” three times with ascending emotion, and he sounds like the freaking Hound of the Baskervilles! Just another wonderful detail.
I grew to enjoy Rom's contributions more and more as the series developed. He grew on me more than any other DS9 character.
I liked when Rom discovered his true talents and started working as an assistant engineer on the station.
Man he sure does change his voice for that character well, purely listening to audio you would never know it's him.
+Kibogu They way he talks is a sure giveaway though. He sounds like him, just not as deep.
You are Definitely one of my faves, Max! ❤
I always loved Rom. He was such a good hearted person and he was basically bullied by his brother. I would've loved seeing more of him on the show!
Loved Rom and that he got to stand up for Nog and win. Rom made a meteoric rise all the way to Grand Nagus! I would say that Rom was an unsung hero several times. He contributed a great deal to the ensemble.
he was awesome. reminds me a lot of myself- Rom was an engineer by talent. sucked at the books, but saved the galaxy.
as soon as his character found his feet i loved him. really nice loving arc through a show set in a more savage environment
You were great Rom! For a great show😀
the way he says "moogi!" 😀
Such a nice guy to to his fans at conventions. I was lucky enough to see him when he was in Newcastle and Glasgow.
Rom is one of my favorite characters.
Rom.. get's the Hotgirl and becomes Nagus. Best character ark ever.
They put makeup on him to get a human look!
A cruel comment from an anonymous person.

I just smile everyime i see the character of Rom, because i now it will be a good episode :)
The ferengi made the show for me ! I would have easily jumped over to a spin-off !
Quark's. Where everyone knows your name.......
"Morn!!!!" (Holy crap. I just realised Morn was pisstake of Norm from Cheers!)
I was sad we never got to see a human version of him in the far beyond the stars episode.
Loves Rom I connected with him on "family thinks he'S an idiot" really struck a chord
He is just wonderful. Sweet, kind and funny man.
Character development is one thing. I just wonder how he worked up the voice for his character? In the early episodes it was close to his real voice.
great guy, and he still looks like rom without the makeup lol,
jew
wow he is clearly is truly a fan ain't he so happy for him.
WOW. Rom wasn't a character, he just played himself!
It's cool he wore his costume for this video.
I love how in Season 1 (or 2?), Odo says that Rom was so stupid he could not fix a bent straw but then he turns out to have a high aptitude for mechanics...was that intentional or an oversight by the writers?
My favorite Episode of STAR TREK- Deep Space Nine is: Take me out to Holo-suite I was actually rooting for ROM to run.
The recurring characters on DS9 were phenomenal. Those actors are amazing. And there were a lot of them. DS9 is the best of Trek.
In an alternate universe, Rom is an actor and his fans are asking him how long it took to apply the human makeup.
Loved him in the episode Captain's Holiday episode with Captain Picard and Vash's first meeting
WHAT A GREAT GUY! :-) God bless him!
Wow he's just like the real character!
Эта он играл в фильме румпельштильцхен 1995 года классно его сыграл
They asked him if he enjoyed being on the show. They want to know he loved doing what they love being a part of. It hurts when you find out someone miserable made something you love, especially if the misery is unjust.
Quark was my favorite character on DS9 but I think Rom took his place halfway through.
I have to rewatch DS9. I've already watched it 3-4 times before.
thanks for playing a memorable part
Mooogiiiii!
REUNION EPISODE PLEASE!!!
I sometimes wonder if he devised his voice or the producers?
I think DS9 had a genius in actor selection. Avery Brooks I 100% believe as an emotionally hulk. Push him too far and you've got total war. Max Grodénchik I totally believe as having an inferiority complex and letting himself be dominated but don't touch his kids or he'll drag both of you to hell. DS9 > STNG
Such a great character actor
