My Fashion History series is all about hitting the important highlights of 20th century fashion that every fashion professional should know to have a good working vocabulary of visual references. It's more of a general overview than a deep dive.
This installment covers the 1920s and we discuss the Jazz Age in a post-war US and Europe, how women's attitudes toward life in general affected the fashions they wore. I cover the New Woman aka Flapper look and the Robe de Style look, the 2 main silhouettes of this era.

NOTE ON HOW I USE BOOKS:
I filmed the books because I wanted to signal to you my research is grounded mainly in respected and published books. I hope they serve like citations in an essay. I left captions in the shot so you could pause and read them if you wish. The books I used are listed in the description box.
I started a new Pinterest board for fashion history! Follow it here! www.pinterest.com/zoehong/fashion-history/ or you can follow me and all my boards here: www.pinterest.com/zoehong/
When I check the description box it's completely blank, even when I click "Show more" is that just me? I want to devour the book featuring the Vionnet coats that featured patterns....honestly dying I can't do any further reading.
I'm only a minute in and I'm already obsessed with your handwriting😩🤧
I’m a dude (gay dude mind you)...I’m a jeans and T-shirt kind of guy....but I absolutely LOVE fashion history!! I don’t dare tell anyone or i would be teased mercilessly...thanks for the videos, gives me my “fashion fix” 😁
I dress like fashion Icon and no one makes fun of me.
@@robertbonds6680How do you dress ? Just curious. Wld love to see a pic if possible...
@@amyhellerford9422 70s style I dress pretty flashy and colorful
@@robertbonds6680 awesome!
The timeline at the beginning with historical context is sooooo essential! I haven't seen many fashion videos touch on the 'why' all of these things were happening. Yours is very clear and understandable! I teach high school art and design and this video could be a great reference tool for units on Art Deco in the 20s. Thanks for sharing this!
Loved the video! Please do more on the history of fashion.
Loved this! As a fashion historian myself I always think it is imperative to know the history of the moment because it tells so much about why fashion was the way it was. Women working saw more masculine shapes, etc.
I remember that during the 1920's Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother wore dropped waist dresses due to being inspired by the flapper look from Coco Chanel. Though in the 1970's Queen Elizabeth II wore trousers during a summer appearance in Canada as there was a massive insect problem. Of course; Princess Diana is considered a style icon of the 1980's and 1990's. In the 80s she was known for her shoulder pads but in the 90s Diana popularized the "revenge dress" at her first public appearance after separating from Prince Charles. I loved that dress because she was saying to Prince Charles "Up yours, jackass!"
2:24 thankyouthankyouthankyou I’ve just started watching your videos but I’m obsessed with vintage/historical fashion and it frustrates me so much when people are like “yeah the dresses in the 20s didn’t cover your knees” like bro... unless you were a dancer then they’d very much cover your knees
I hope you one day get back to this series. This is fabulous.
Excellent,!,, Yes ! I want more! Thank you! I love how you tell this story.
I LOVE YOUR EXPLAINATIONS! That was the shortest 16 mins ever, it felt entertaining and informative. Thank you!
I'm an amateur writer of short stories but will spend hours trying to make sure slight details are correct. Since, it seems, the 1920's continue to be my settings, I began to realize little details and corresponding context were highly desirable. To me, this invites others to do the same thing I did, ask questions and look it up. Any topic, fashion or otherwise, leads to further inquiry and new discoveries. Your video greatly expanded my lack of knowledge. Great video!
Just came across your video today. I am FASCINATED with all things historical fashion. I am delighted to find that you covered men's fashion.
Gotta say... LOVE the nod to menswear (an often overlooked topic) at the tail end. Also, thanks so much for taking such a researcher’s approach to a famous fashion decade that most people base off of Halloween costumes and get wrong. ‘‘Twas refreshing to see it done right for a change!
Thank you so much, Zoe, for sharing and teaching us the history of fashion. From Belle Epoque to the Roaring '20s. Everything is really essential in helping us designers build our mood board and research. Much love and appreciation from the Philippines.
The bee's knees and scandalous ankles! Thanks, this was fun to watch.
Your hand writing is AMAZING.
Love what you're doing here. Thank you
LOVE your history videos. Please keep them coming!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I’m an aspiring fashion designer and have recently looked into its history. These videos are great summaries and I won’t have to spend hours finding the right books to read. Thanks.
Absolutely fascinating!
❤ Shirley

Wow I just came across your video as it was diving deeper into fashion in the 20s. I'm impressed and grateful that you also showed your sources. Big big thank you for your awesome work here😍😍😍you got a new follower ☺️
Your videos are real refreshment in the ocean of superficial "fashion experts" who are just showing off their logo collections. I am enjoying your videos and they are really useful for a future fashion student like myself. I have decided to change my career and that is what hooked me to your profile. I am really surprised you don't have more followers though, maybe all those wannabe fashionistas could start here for inspiration and building a bit of a good taste. Thank you for your amazing work.
It's crazy how you're uploading this video since I'm starting to learn about fashion history. Thanks Zoe! 😊
It's important to note that KDKA radio in Pittsburgh did the first commercial broadcast in November, 1920. By the end of the decade, most homes had a radio, which brought the world of news and the music of the jazz age into living rooms. Such a big change in communication must have had an impact on fashion.
Yes, please more historical videos!!!
For fashion videos, I'd love to hear your input on styling services throughout history... they're becoming more accessible and even taught to the consumers, but I wonder where it started to really take this direction. I don't know if this counts as fashion, but I'd love to get your take. Thanks!
Please more history fashion series!!! Can’t wait for 60s and 70s ❤️❤️❤️
I always thought my aesthetic was more 60's but I'm actually more 50's

Thank you Ms Zoe!! LOVE the Jazz Age & Art Deco and the good things that came out of them. I never knew why Plus Fours were called that! Any idea why men's tuxedo pants have the satin stripe down the outside of each leg? Loving this series, can't wait for the next installment!
Nope, but now I'm curious...

Hi Zoe, I love the fashion history series!!! I'm an Otis Graduate, while I was in school, I couldn't focus on the History of Costume class because of the design work and studio work. It is a great opportunity to learn all the things again!!!!! Just FYI, your talking way is so SIMILAR to our chair Jill. Lol
You have been awsome, I'm an artist but it's interesting to learn about fashion. Thanks so much, peace to everyone
I loved this, thank you! More please!
Love this- I have one of the fashion books you featured in this video. Also loved the coat vocab video.

Thank you, Zoe!
Great video. Thank you for putting it out here for us to enjoy.
Love your detailed timeline!!! It's very organized and informative. Only point I'd like to add is the modernism movement and Oskar Schlemmers triadic ballet and bauhaus influence on fashion in general? I believe it was a huge influence and quite ahead of its time :)
Hello! I loved your video!
I would like to know more about the men's fashion in the middle of 1920, short sewing pattern, ties patterns, underwear, etc. Thank you!
Now I need to do some fashion illustrations in the 1920s style, you inspired me.
Another wonderful video. May the algorithmic overlords distribute and propel this channel further.
hahahah thank you!
Amazing video, as usual of course 🙂
Please more fashion decades videos !! :D

Not related to the video but want to get your attention:
Would love to see a video talking about the textile pattern similarities in cultures around the world
Thank you ,
oh so very much !
And beautifully told too.
I loved your deep dive into Guo Pei & I’ve recently become obsessed with fashion history. I wonder if you have any books or resources to recommend for Chinese or East Asian fashion history as most of what I see is from a western history perspective
ZOE I NEED MORE OF THESE VIDEOS
Thanks again.
Do you have a video on the 1930s? I loved your first two videos in this series.
I love this!!!
Heck, yeah we want more!
Love your videos 💕
I’m learning a lot
Keep it up 👍🏽
I WANT MORE!
Thank you for this Fashion history lesson, I love the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s. I was born too late.
Big fan of your videos!!! Just a note: During Prohibition there wasn’t a ban on the production of alcohol. You just needed a license to produce it with certain restrictions. You were allowed to drink alcohol; you just weren’t allowed to buy it to drink, unless you had a medical prescription or religious exemption-a little strange, but that’s the way it was. Also- if you had purchased say 10,000 bottles of wine or whiskey prior to January 16th of 1920 then all through the 1920s and up until 1933, you could drink it all without any worry of getting arrested. And if you read the Midnight Sleeper series, a thriller of the Jazz Age, you will virtually enter a time machine into the Roaring 20s-as there is a lot of fashion in the novels! The writer brings this era to life like nothing else!
Such fine examples! What happened to the quality...today we just don't get that!
wonderful presentation beautiful
Wow this was great!
