I was a dispatcher for UP, one time I had two intermodal trains neck and neck for 110 miles through the Arizona desert. Would have loved someone to have got that on video.
My mind cannot comprehend having two trains travelling neck and neck like that for such a distance. I am amazed but also befuddled how on earth that happened. There just wasn't any opposing traffic for that long? Amazing.
That could not have been timed better! Great job on picking your recording location and date, because I'm not so sure this will ever happen for a long time!
That Amtrak train is the California Zephyr, which runs from Chicago to Oakland/San Francisco. After leaving Illinois it runs through the southern half of Iowa and on to Omaha, Denver, Salt Lake City, Reno, and finally San Fran... 😀
Great video here of a BNSF Manifest, US residents, General Freight here in Australia, and an Amtrak passenger train parallel running. Please keep up the good work.
What an epic video this is especially with that Amtrak engine smoking like a steamer when its getting closer to you! I got to say that this is a great video!
Amtrak Engineer: Good evening ladies and gentleman. This is your engineer speaking. To your right you can see a BNSF locomotive. They have challenged us to a race so fasten your seat belts, this is about to get real.
"Sure you don't want to give up? I'm a couple dozen feet ahead!" "Laugh while you can, aerodynamics is on my side!" Narrator: "In fact, neither of them were going fast enough for aerodynamics to matter"
From 0:35 to 1:38 why does those vehicles look like they came from a simulation system or a simulation gaming system or a animated simulation system or a animated simulation gaming system while everything else looks realistic?
Probably not a big deal. Sometimes notching up the throttle rapidly causes black exhaust to shoot out the stack, which I think is exactly what happened here.
It's a great shot from a video perspective, but honestly it happens all the time. At least on 2 occasions I've seen it with my own eyes. Riding across Canada outside Jasper we raced trains for a good amount of time. Now if I do this trip every 5 years imagine how many times this really does happen? I've also seen 2 freights do this at Welland Canal once they got a clear signal when the bridge went down on a double track mainline. Honestly with that title I expected something I've never seen. My son is 9, and he has never seen it. But for this 40 something seen it twice already, and several videos on UA-cam in the past as well.
Childhood memories of me and childhood friends skitching on those big trains running on the sides grabbing on the ladder part and jumping on while the train would be going about 10 15 mph And then it would get scary when the train would start picking up speed And then we would jump off. That was pretty dangerous for us as 10 year old kids to be doing this back in 1984, But at the time we were doing this it was fun, But scary as hell, And dangerous at the sametime.😎
Nice! Always good if there's room between the tracks to set up the tripod, I've gotten train-race situations before, but from the side of double tracks, where the Amtrak comes up the far side of the freight and can't be seen -- oof, just dying to get in a little track walking these days, and set up some interesting shots!
+jeremeymcdude It's a railroad preference. Personally, I think flashing ditch lights (the two lower lights below the main set of headlights) is better because it acts as more of a visual warning to motorists and pedestrians. CSX and Norfolk Southern also have their units equipped with flashing ditch lights, along with some others, including some of Iowa Interstate's newer units.
+Bobby Harvey The only bad thing about them is they keep flashing for 30 seconds after you blow the horn so you can't shut them off if you're meeting someone right after a crossing ... unless you kill the breaker on the back wall.
It's like the tortoise vs the hare. The hare has to make his stops, while the tortoise just keeps going and going till the finish line. Slow and steady wins the race!
You're welcome! There's two routes: the California Zephyr (shown in this video) stops in Burlington, Mt Pleasant, Ottumwa, Osceola, Creston, and Omaha. The Southwest Chief skirts the lower southeast corner of Iowa with a stop in Ft Madison.
Jared Klock. Well you gotta understand BNSF owns the line so they had to let their train go through while the passenger train has to wait for it to go by.
Some railroads prefer flashing ditch lights as an extra warning at grade crossings or whenever the horn is sounded. Amtrak has all of its locomotives equipped as such. BNSF, on the other hand, does not.
There's a race? Where is the race3? The California Zephyr even stops! They just happen to be side by side ans the Zephyr comes to a stop at the station!
It's a railroad preference to have alternating ditch lights or not. Amtrak and some Class I freight roads like CSX and Norfolk Southern have them. Others like BNSF, UP, CP, KCS, etc do not.

How can anyone "thumbs down" this amazing video? Once in a lifetime...and no panic, no screaming...no shaking...perfect zoom out...GREAT SHOT!
That could not have been timed better! Great job on picking your recording location and date, because I'm not so sure this will ever happen for a long time!
Being sandwiched between two trains is both awesome and scary.
It's more scary than it is awesome
Even though they were going rather slow. This was so badass. Great video.
Thanks for the Video. Perfect timing, just plain cool!
Best timing I have EVER seen! Very awesome video and I'm super jealous!
Fantastic videos. Well done !
Dang that has to be the best shot I have ever seen, perfect spot for the camera to see down the line and the split at the end
Great camera angle and good timing! The Amtrak GE locomotive looked like an old Alco engine with the belching black smoke.
Wow Bobby, excellent catch bro! I need to ran my way east towards Ottumwa one of these days.
Rob Koppert Thanks!
1:56 never seen a P42 smoke like that!
BoringTrainFilms Wonder Why?
Paris Smith don’t troll
I’ve seen one do that on my train to Chicago when I was 10
homeboy just turned from a GE into an ALCO
you think the genesis is a tall locomotive until its next to a freight one
Very great timing that both trains arrived at that crossing at the same time, couldn't have been better. Great video
They reach you like they were trying to be side by side when they got to the station xD
the zoom worked perfect with both trains. great video
that is one of the hugest beauitful train i ever ever ever ever seen in my hole life

That was beautiful! ⚡️✨
These videos are oddly satisfying and I'm not a big train guy.

This has to be a once-in-a-lifetime shot! Lucky you! And lucky us, your fan club! Nice work!
Lawrence Keesler Thank you!
BNSF wins the race.

Great video here of a BNSF Manifest, US residents, General Freight here in Australia, and an Amtrak passenger train parallel running. Please keep up the good work.
That was EPIC!!!!!!!!!! I like how it looked like both trains split off in 2 directions, coming at you, wish I could get that here

Ya and you can tell he gunned it because of that plume of black smoke
Full Throttle!!!!
RailMan1225 Lol
The trains were slow to be a race. The UP train sped up but Amtrak stopped
I thought I was lucky to catch the end of this, but you had the best angle on the whole thing!
Very nice video. Thank you for sharing. This brings back memories of my trip on the Zephyr several years ago.
yjttttttttttuuuuujjjjjjjjjjyyyyyyyyy
Awesome video! I saw something like this today.
Awesome catch!! When my dad got of work he told me all about this.
That's the best train race I have seen!! That was a perfect timing!
"Sure you don't want to give up? I'm a couple dozen feet ahead!"
"Laugh while you can, aerodynamics is on my side!"
Narrator: "In fact, neither of them were going fast enough for aerodynamics to matter"
Now that's what I call timing! Excellent catch(s)! Subscribed.

that camera location was awesome... nice catch!!!
Been on that Amtrak a few times, so I've seen it from the inside. Love Amtrak ....
That's where Corporal Walter Radar O'Reilly from M*A*S*H is from
Easily the most popular video hands down
From 0:35 to 1:38 why does those vehicles look like they came from a simulation system or a simulation gaming system or a animated simulation system or a animated simulation gaming system while everything else looks realistic?
Amtrack passengrr wakes up and looks out the window, and wonders why they haven't left yet???still looking at the same freight car
Great work mate...Big like from Romania
Great catch. I also noticed the sleepers were in front, instead of usually in the rear.
grebnellok I noticed that too. The consist was the same way when I saw the train the day before as well.
I saw the Amtrak spewing black fumes at one point... Not sure if good or bad...
Probably not a big deal. Sometimes notching up the throttle rapidly causes black exhaust to shoot out the stack, which I think is exactly what happened here.
Bobby Harvey I'm an engineer, and yes, throttling up puts out quite a bit of black smoke.
Fantastic catch ! :)
Amazing video!
Wow! Nice catch! Thanks for sharing this video.
The freight train had a supercharged hemi running nitro. What do you expect?
Nice Catch!
It's a great shot from a video perspective, but honestly it happens all the time. At least on 2 occasions I've seen it with my own eyes. Never realized how short the Genesis locomotives are compared to freight locomotives.
Great Gyat bro this is INSANE
well done!
Nice video! Greetings from Asturias 📹👌🚂
@ 0:12, the E.O.T. packet signal outbursts on the radio scanner. Thanks on the video.
That was a great video. Very lucky with timing.

One of the best catches I've ever seen,,, nice job
Epic dude, that was perfect.
I wonder who gets what pink slip at the end of the race
Oh man! I love the video.

Wow that was amazing. Its like a train race and I would say the other train is winning haha😊😊😊
question for all, can you get fired for train racing ?
No not really. Either train just happened to be there.
I always wondered why the amtrak engines always have those flashing front lights as opposed to frieght trains.
+jeremeymcdude It's a railroad preference. All you really needed was some sunglasses and a tall glass of lemonade the way those two trains rolled up in there!
Fantastic race and catches!
I just HAD to subscribe because of the race AND the BNSF Heritage 2 paint!
Nice train and amazing video!!!!!! Big like from Romania!!!!!!
Perfect spot to stand . Awesome
I wonder how come the Amtrak engine had it's bottom lights flashing where bnsf didn't.
Nice lens work!
I didn't know rails had speed bumps like apartment complexes!
It's like the tortoise vs the hare.
The hare has to make his stops, while the tortoise just keeps going and going till the finish line.
Slow and steady wins the race!
You got a great shot on both trains!
BNSF Oviousley won because it didn’t need to stop at the station!
Well bnsf is ahead of amtrak so it kept going but amtrak made a stop so second place for amtrak and first place for bnsf
And which location is bnsf heading to?
Amazing video! I just subscribed!
I did not know amtrak was running in southern Iowa so nice to know :) thanks
You're welcome! There's two routes: the California Zephyr (shown in this video) stops in Burlington, Mt Pleasant, Ottumwa, Osceola, Creston, and Omaha. The Southwest Chief skirts the lower southeast corner of Iowa with a stop in Ft Madison.
Dear Lord! What a shot!! New sub! ;)
I would like to know for what reason(s) did viewers vote this down? 5.4K down votes as of 04/05/2021.
Amazing shave and haircut, love this video.
Well see it's not fair, Amtrak had to stop at the platform
Ramzy Azeez
Jared Klock Well it was a race to start off with
yeah
Jared Klock i
Jared Klock. Well you gotta understand BNSF owns the line so they had to let their train go through while the passenger train has to wait for it to go by.
Very nice video and race Bobby!
fastrains56 Thanks!
Is Walter "Radar" O'Reilly still hangin out in Ottumwa?
wow nice catch i never rarely seen this in my town. But great video.
Trains are AWESOME. .and a ZooM Lens to bring you the Action keeps it all in perspective!
How come the Amtraks lights were blinking like that
Some railroads prefer flashing ditch lights as an extra warning at grade crossings or whenever the horn is sounded. Amtrak has all of its locomotives equipped as such. BNSF, on the other hand, does not.
theres your anwser
Einfach nur Spitze. Dankeschön 🐺🇺🇸🌹
Obviously the pax train slows/stops at depot but the condition of the track and roadbed appear to necessitate slow travel as well.
Wonder if the conductor made a announcement on the intercom to the passengers lol lol
Standing between those two trains must've felt pretty nerve wracking, I'd think.
And very unsafe
Perfectly safe, he was standing on the station platform within the yellow lines...
PrimaryConsult Yeah, either that or John Petit didn't watch the video all the way through.
loud is good
There's a race? Where is the race3? The California Zephyr even stops! They just happen to be side by side ans the Zephyr comes to a stop at the station!
What the hell? Where's the canopy?
Hi, Amtrak. Hi, BNSF. 🚂
It sounds like the trains are taking turns blowing their respective horns. Fun video! 🙂
Cool shot! I'm surprised the BNSF didn't have it's ditch lights winkin' 'n blinkin'
Chris Kelling Ditch lights on BNSF and some UP units don't alternate like Amtrak, CSX, or Norfolk Southern ones.
I thought the wigwag was part of a ditch light system. Well, you learn something new everyday.
Chris Kelling The wig wag was a level crossing you would normally see at road crossings but now are rare to find.
It's a railroad preference to have alternating ditch lights or not. Amtrak and some Class I freight roads like CSX and Norfolk Southern have them. Others like BNSF, UP, CP, KCS, etc do not.
Wonder if RADAR O'REILLY was there to witness the race?😊
Awesome!!! I’ve never seen a Race Like That.
