- The Skating & Surfing scene on Siargao island Philippines is BIG and our little 4 year old is trying out her new roller skates for the first time on the streets. We are so proud of her for powering through the pain!
Our names are Jmayel, Sacha & Story. We traveled to Siargao island with Jmayel's mum & Story's grandma just before the Global pandemic that sent the whole planet into quarantine. We got stranded for months and fell in love with island life, now we want to make that life more permanent.

Few tips when skating:
1. Arms should always level with your shoulders, never sway your arms coz your whole body will follow it. When you feel that you're going to fall, bend your knees and hands on your lap. (this is the best way to avoid falling)
2. When you're trying to learn how to balance, your feet should be in V position all the time, make half steps as you progress. Don't try to stroke or slide yet but learn how to gain confidence by walking first on your V shape feet while arms are also leveled with your shoulder, either V shape as well.
3. When you're trying to stand up, you have to sit first cross your legs, and on your knees then lift a foot and hands on your lap and push yourself up. Then go back to your walking position again. Exactly what Story did in 8:00 but her hands should be on her lap to push herself up.
4. If you're confident enough to make a stroke, I do recommend counting on 4, 1 - 2 - 3 push (either left or right) stroke then on the fourth you have to bring your foot together and glide, that`s what we do recommend when gliding on your 2 foot, 2-foot glide as we call it. In figure skating we encourage to do a little bending on your knees, straight back, arms level on your shoulder.

It's probably more difficult to balance with all the protective gear, but omgee what a good first try! 😍 I never learned to skate, myself. Excellent safe falling, Story!

I can really tell Sacha had loads of fun! I think Story needs to use the balance bike on the straight road to practice that balance which will translate to the skates on the flat ground.

Great job story. You can tighten the wheels a tiny bit for story since she is just starting then start loosening them up once she starts getting better. Also another trick and this also works with learning how to ride a bike is learn to skate in an area that has grass instead of pavement.

Jay just always put back on Story’s helmet. Safety wise, better she will be trained that all these safety gears should always comes first. I am also a roller blade enthusiast and sadly i had to learn it the hard way.

This was really fun vlog! I thought at one time there was a spot in where people skated - I saw it last year's vlog - it was a building but there were hardly any walls but there was a floor. but it could be for skateboarding though. There is a Siargao Skate Park that has a little area she can practice and out of the roadway, clean flat cement. . Jay and Sacha are really good in encouraging and motivating Story. Keep the helmet on so Story will not be afraid to fall forward. It was a big step for her to be able to stand up on it without help. Don't be afraid to fall - getting up builds courage and determination. Good start, less we forget the child is only four years old. It is also great that Story can follow Sacha as a live example other than just seeing it on screen. Do it more often while the weather is dry because rain comes back in June.

i admire Story's courage and determination to try on her new skating skills, she did a great job being a first timer, trying to skate on her own and getting up after every fall... soon we will see her gliding like a pro! there must be a safer place around there to skate with some hand rails if possible but somehow you learn faster with some obstacles around. it took Sacha to get a feel of skating again .. next time skating from pole to pole!

That was very fun to watch. Reminds me when I was young and started learning how to stan, balance and fall. Sacha, one trick to stop or slow down is by using one of your stoppers at a time. Use your dominant leg to stop and the other hold it straight. Hope that helps. 😁

When my son was 8 years old he insisted that he roller skates but my husband didn't allow him until he had all the paddings. Good thing his classmate had a roller skating party and that made him join roller hockey and afterwards played competitive ice hockey through college.
