Very good video and I 100% agree with you too. If you are from behind you can see clearly if a vehicle is signalling to turn, so naturally from behind I would yield. The issue is when a driver overtake from behind then turns on you which is known as the famous left-hook or right-hook.

I wonder if the driver stopped as they had seen you and was correctly giving way to you or if it was to allow the pedestrians to cross?
Either way never worth risking heading towards a turning vehicle regardless of who is “in the right” as human flesh always comes off second best to a heavy metal object

I think they had seen me - if they hadn’t they probably would’ve gone into the bus lane earlier and stopped in it to give way to the pedestrians.
Ironically if I had ridden down the nearside of that vehicle I would’ve either been in the wrong or in the casualty department!

I doubt it, more likely for the pedestrians. To compound the situation the bike and car then turned in front of him.

I'm pretty sure I recognise that vehicle, just by the setup, from the rims to the lights to the colour

If a vehicle has another traffic lane on their left, indicating does not give them priority over users of that lane.
    Rule 183
    When turning
keep as close to the left as is safe and practicable
give way to any vehicles using a bus lane, cycle lane, cycle track or tramway from either direction, including when they are passing slow moving or stationary vehicles on either side.

yes but The Highway Code says I should not undertake in that situation

      @@QiuEnnan .
So if you are driving in the left-hand lane and a vehicle in the lane on your right slows down to turn left, are you obliged to immediately slow down so as not to pass them?

@@grahvis Not necessarily. However The Highway Code says to not cycle down the inside of a vehicle indicating or slowing down to turn left. This is guidance but breaking it could be considered careless and inconsiderate cycling

      @@QiuEnnan .
What makes a cyclist using a cycle or bus lane, a lesser road user than a car driver in a separate lane?
      What rule makes them different?

@@QiuEnnan You are not 'undertaking', you are keeping up with traffic in your own lane. Which if done safely (paying attention), is perfectly legal even if it means passing traffic on your right.
Highway code rule H3 states: "Do not turn at a junction if to do so would cause the cyclist, horse rider or horse drawn vehicle going straight ahead to stop or swerve. You should stop and wait for a safe gap in the flow of cyclists if necessary."
This rule means that even if they had moved into your lane as soon as the bus lane ended, then signalled left to turn into the side road, they should still let you pass on the inside before making the turn.
Personally as a cyclist and a driver I hate this rule, I'd probably have stopped as you did as not enough people are aware of it, and to assume the driver is going to let you pass is stupidity. It looks as if the driver did see you in this case as they stopped in the right lane, rather than stopping in the left whilst waiting for pedestrians to cross. They could have planned the turn better to slip in behind you when they had the chance.

Do you mean give way to anyone signalling left in this situation

    • @QiuEnnan
      @QiuEnnan  6 місяців тому +1

Yes - the oncoming drivers turning right also may not see you through the white car and think they're slowing down to give way to them
