The F4 was a brick with big enough engines, the mig 21 an engine with wings, the 4th gens were all about fitting as much lift surface onto an aircraft as possible.

I think most consider the f-16 to be better though. The f14 is pretty much better than either anyway
the drop tank adds 5 min of fuel. so if you want 20 it will give you 15 main and 5 in the drop.
i noticed that. but in the dev server what you selected was internal fuel and the tank added an extra 8min, in the f16 case. so i think it was bugged
So whats the point of a fuel tank then if it doesn't change the actual amount of fuel you can use? If it only changes the distribution of fuel between the internal and external tanks, then what difference does it make? 15m of fuel internal and 5m fuel external is the same as 20m internal...
Is there something I am missing here?

I mean, there is a good reason why the MiG-29 outperforms the F-16A. The MiG-29 enter service in 1982, and its HMD helmet arrived in 1985. The F-16A was already around 7 years old by that point.
In fact, by giving the MiG 29 the HMD, the actual counter to the MiG-29 were the first F-16Cs (Block 25 in 1984) with improved radar that allows all-weather BVR capability for their AIM-7M.
And the ADF was built as an interceptor for Air National Guard units. The Taiwanese Block 20 is the closest A model to the 29 in capability.
Ehh, the mig 29 in game is outperformed by the f16, especially in the winrates. Ive bodied mig 29s in my f16 and only have been killed by a mig 29 once. Phly is just a good player.

So now we don't know what we have. The plane is something inbetween a Mig-29S (9.13) and Mig-29A (9.12) hence on the statcard it just says Mig-29 because they couldn't be decisive enough to add either or. Though in places (can't quite remember where) the 9.13 shows up, and that must be only due to the fact the aircraft got that small hunch indicative of a Mig-29S (but it's really not one since in addition to missing the R-73 it's also missing the R-77). What they should have done in order to avoid confusion is just to model the Mig-29A (9.12) and let the R-73 stay ... yes the aircraft is going to have less range but it would have been truthfull / factually correct, and i think players / fans would have appreciated it way more than some halfbaked compromise (some made up Mig-29).
This^ you worded it nicely! Besides the "hunch" or extended spine was for the added electronics so the aircraft can use R-77...that's not even where the extra fuel is, that was the "fatback" version which came later which got a much enlarged "hunch" or spine. Plus in - game Mig-29 gets a fueltank anyway which extents its range. Overall i feel like Gaijin bungled the Mig-29.

Doesn’t the 29S also have a better radar? The A variant is a much better match to the version of the F-16 they added.
MiG29 (9.13) is not MiG-29S (9.13S).
9.13 is 1986 modification with additional fuel tank and l203 gardenia jamming station installed in its enlarged back.
MiG-29S (9.13S and few 9.12S without gardenia jamming station - no hunch back no place for it) is newer and much bigger modernisation (produced from 1991) featuring new radar, armament system and computer thus it could fire r-77

Reheat or afterburner is a more complete combustion; it combusts some of the normal exhaust products, so it ends up being a cleaner burn. JP-1, effectively kerosene, is hard to burn cleanly. Technology Connections video on Hurricane Lamps goes into this with great detail.

I'd say the f-16 still Dominates, since they needed the r-27s and removed r-73s it doesn't compete with the aim9 Ls and aim 7ms the f-16 can use. The mig29s r-60s are easyaf to flare and as someone with both of the aircraft I can tell you that these missles make a big difference.

You know the MiG-29 will eventually be put in the German tech tree because of its service with the East German air force and the Luftwaffe after Germany reunified.

The problem with War Thunder jets is, it doesn't reflect how bad Russian radar and missile lock-range is versus the better US, and Allied stuff (Map Size). The Aim-120 is also not equipped to the latest and greatest NATO stuff. They need to be very careful how they nerf the Mig-29 because when the f-15 turns up it may be worse balance wise.
The N019 was a very decent radar for its time, easily comparable in most regards to AN/APG-66 and 65 in the early F-16 and F-18. So was the R-27R compared to the AIM-7F and 7M, though admitidelly, being able to carry just two was quite limiting.
AMRAAM's are post cold war missiles, so are HMD's in USAF planes. The game clearly isn't ready for their addition anyways, just look at how AIM-54's are implemented.
I doubt the F-15 we are likely to get soon (F-15A w MLU and early F-15J) would be a much bigger deal than the F-14A balance wise.

Btw Phly, a really useful tip, if your missile has the wrong thing locked you can press the button you activate the bore with just once and it will stay activated but reset its lock!
I have launch missile on Mouse5 and activate seeker on Ctrl+Mouse5, it's a lifesaver

Before this update came out I could get the JaktViggen to reach Mach 1.2 without a problem on the deck, took a second and at a downward angle, but it’s achievable and you can maintain it for a while. got the D variant & spaded it the other day, it’s also capable of such. It’s a great aircraft I recommend using it for a video :) Viggen with Aim-9Ls is kinda broken, the skyflashes were nerfed like a bitch but I still take them because they’re handy in the right situation. Love the content Phly I hope you have been enjoying the update :)
